City councillor Jamie Goughhas promised to be a ‘‘squeakywheel’’ to ensure Bishopdalereceives an interim library andcommunity centre.

Cr Gough, city councillorrepresentative for the Fendalton-Waimairi ward said he hasalready had two meetings withcity council staff to stress the needfor a transitional building for theBishopdale Library and

Community Centre.The News Advertiser has

reported in past weeks thatbusinesses in the Bishopdale Mallwant a transitional building toencourage foot traffic to comeback to the mall.

A decision regarding the fate ofthe Bishopdale Library andCommunity Centre will be madeby the end of the year according tothe city council.

Cr Jamie Gough has said thatif there is a lengthy wait on the

fate of the library and communitycentre and community centrethen he believes the communityshould have a interim solutionand encouraged the community tothink creatively and not restricttheir thoughts to a portacomsituation.

‘‘Although a portacom typesituation shouldn’t be ruled out, these temporary buildings cancost up to $200,000.

If there was already a building, like the scout den, which may be

available then perhaps it wouldbe more cost effective to look atsprucing up the place.

‘‘Once the library is ready to goagain then it can be returned backto the club or organisation andthey get a new spruce up,’’ hesaid.

I have travelled the world for manyyears, working and living in France,Russia, South Korea, Japan, Egypt andThailand.

One thing that always kept me goingwas my hunger for knowledge. Newcountries, the people, and their culturesbut most importantly: their local food.

Food is a very subjective issue. Somelike it hot, some like it mild. But one canappreciate good food and judge oncethey have tried authentic cuisine.

One country to me stands out fromthe rest, both culinary and culturally:Thailand.

After a good year in Thailand and fewyears in South Korea I decided to moveto New Zealand, where the sun alwaysshines and the grass is a lot greenerthan in Australia.

I decided to settle in Dunedin, and ofcourse tried all Thai restaurants therein the search for memories. A fewcame close, but none reached what Iwas missing so much: The true ethnicexperience.

When work brought me in Christchurchfor a few weeks, colleagues invited meto the Thai Orchid Riccarton.

I didn’t have much up, especially notin a city that has to cater even more totourist tastes than Dunedin.

I was pleasantly surprised when I waswelcomed by Linda, the lovely host ofthe Thai Orchid.

The first thing I ordered was thetraditional: Pad Thai.

And was surprised when it actuallytasted the same as in Thailand!

To make sure that this was not a oneoff, I ordered Thai Green Curry, again,to my surprise, it turned out just asauthentic and great as the Pad Thai.

I can guarantee you that everythingprepared at the Thai Orchid have metthe highest standards of Thai cuisinewith value for money. This is becauseof the fresh ingredients and the chefs, who are fromThailand.

Where do you find the best Thai foodoutside Thailand? To me, no doubt, theThai Orchid in Riccarton (and I havetried Thai food in at least 10 differentcountries).

Thanks Linda! Go to 21 Riccarton Roadand try for yourself. Ph: 03 343 0790

RECREATION: This model of St David’s Church in Belfast has been constructed by a local artist to preserve the churchin case vandalism destroyed it. PHOTO SUPPLIED

‘Themain reason I built the model was because some idiots couldtear down the church and it would be gone’

Model response to vandalsA Redwood artist has quicklybuilt a model of a church topreserve its history after fearsvandals would destroy it.

Artist Rangi Downes tookone month to construct thereplica of St David’s Church onMain North Rd after he readabout the wanton vandalismbeing heaped against it in theNew Advertiser, April 23.

The News Advertiserreported that over a period ofeight months the church hadwindows smashed, was litteredwith broken bottles and evenreports of someone defecatingon the church’s front porch. Thevandalism culminated when thechurch’s new sign, withconcrete foundations, wasripped from the ground.

Mr Downes said he washorrified after reading thearticle and thought that at anymoment the community couldloose the church if thevandalism continued.

‘‘The main reason I built themodel was because some idiotscould tear down the church andit would be gone. I want to makesure history doesn’t disappear.

‘‘After reading the article inthe News Advertiser I wentdown and looked at the churchand started work on it,’’ he said.

Mr Downes has donated themodel to the Belfast-RedwoodParish.

Vicar of the Belfast-RedwoodParish Rev Jo Latham said theyhad not yet decided where the

model would be placed but saidthat no more vandalism hadbeen reported.

‘‘I think the article made

people more aware. We have hadcalls from people saying thatpeople have been over at thechurch and although those

people were actually there forlegitimate reasons it is good tohave extra sets of eyes,’’ shesaid.

Centrerunningdoubts■ From Page 1But St Albans ResidentsAssociation president EmmaTwaddle says their organisationdoes have the skills to managethe new community centre.

‘‘We ran the resource centrefor 15 years. I would challengethat statement of communityorganisations not having theright skills and what she basesthat statement on,’’ she said.

She said if the communitycentre was to be managed by thecouncil that would add morelayers of bureaucracy.

‘‘If the community runs itthen we don’t have to follow citycouncil procedures which can bevery difficult.’’

The transitional building isnot yet open to the public butresidents will need to book therooms through the council andthen pick up the key from thePapanui Library

Ms Twaddle said under thenew booking system it was nolonger a community centre. ‘‘Youcannot call that a communitycentre, that is a community hall.People used to be able to accessinformation easily, come and usethe computers and havemeetings,’’she said.

Ms Button said she knew thesituation was not ideal and washoping to place a key in a morelocalised place.

SIRENS: Workmen prepare the sirens for installation.

Turn them upWhat a crock! Don’t MeerkatAlert Systems understandterms like "conflicts ofinterest" and "independentsurveys". To say that theirsurvey produced different tothose reported by the newsmedia. I live midway downFalcon St and was inside myhouse and never heard themand I was expecting them atthe given time. The volumeneeds to be turned up.

ANDY LEA

Not loudWe live in Halsey St,Southshore side. On thetsunami testing day I waswalking my dogs and justentering the campingground, which would beabout 200 metres from thenearest siren on Pine Ave. Iheard the sirens go off butthey were not as loud as onewould expect, as I continuedmy walk away from thesirens the noise definitelybecame more muted andsounded a bit like a far off caralarm. When about 400metres away the sirens werenot particularly noticeable(and no I am not deaf or hardof hearing ).

In direct contrast the NewBrighton fire alarm which issome 3.3 kilometres away inHawke St can easily be heardat our address.

You would not be able tohear the tsunami sirens evenfrom 1km away, they arequite simply not loudenough, so I therefore do notagree with Meerkat’sfindings or survey, whichthey must have kept prettyquiet about as no one aroundhere heard of any survey.

JEFF BARNFIELD

Didn’t hear athingI live in Bromley and wasaware the sirens were to betested on July 22 but despitelistening for them I did nothear a thing. I live closeenough to the sea that shouldthere be any danger fromthat area I would need toknow about it.

MARY STANLEY-SHEPHERD

Tsunami sirensI read your article about thetsunami sirens. I was prettyhorrified to think that thepeople who installed themthink they are workingefficiently. I live one blockback from the beach andwould expect to be alerted ifthere was to be a majortsunami event. I stayed homethe morning of the test andmade sure I would hear anysirens.

I didn’t hear a thing! What

sort of survey did Meerkatconduct? I have not talked toone person in my area whoheard the sirens thatmorning. I assumed therewas a malfunction and theywould be tested on anotheroccasion. I would likeMeerkat to test them againand this time make sureeveryone who needs to, canhear them.

JENNY WALKINSHAW

Couldn’t hearI am amazed that MeerkatAlert Systems think thewarning system was okay. Ilive very close to the beach inSouth Brighton and if I hadnot known that the systemwas to be tested at 11am onthat Sunday I would not haveheard it at all.

I did go outside to checkwith neighbours to see if theyhad heard the siren and thatwas when I discovered wewere all outside because wecould not hear anything. Thenoise we could hear onceoutside was pathetic.

FoodFascinating flavoursperfect for friendsBy AMANDA LAIRD

SURPRISING: Goat’s cheesefritters stuffed with dates andalmonds. Photo / Babiche Martens

One gorgeous springSunday we all decided tojump in the car and headnorth to investigate arecent addition to the cafe/dining scene. Having smallchildren means this doesnot happen as often as Iwould like. The options areto rope in lovinggrandparents who alreadydo more than their fairshare of babysitting or tryto convince "always toobusy" uncles. Or to sourceout the places that arehappy to have childrenroaming free.

This was such a place sothere was plenty of roomfor running and chasingthe dog but moreimportantly we couldconcentrate on thedelicious food and wine.Everything on the menusounded appealing but itwas the way the food wasserved which mostimpressed. Interestingflavours on small platesdesigned to share. Six wereordered and the eating wasunhurried and leisurelywhich got me thinkingabout the style of today’sfood.

As the weather warms it

seems an ideal time toinvite friends over andsharing small plates ofdelectable food seems muchmore preferable thanplanning a picnic or abarbecue. After all, wehave all of summer to enjoythose.

Creating these dishesgives an opportunity todiscover new ingredientsand ways of combiningthem, plus gain pleasurefrom styling the food insuch a way to leave yourguests delighted.

Goat’s cheese made intofritters is crispy andmelting but when theflavour of orange is added, then the soft dates and

toasted almonds create asurprising centre, theflavours are lifted out of theordinary. Look for a chevreinstead of a feta because thecheese will be soft andcreamy.

A frittata is so simple tomake and can be served allpuffed and golden, straightfrom the oven in a gorgeouscast iron fry pan, deliveredto the table on a woodenboard, then turned out orsliced into wedges andserved with a relish and afew salad greens. Frittata isalways a glamorous way touse up leftovers, but makesure you elevate it evenmore with a few specialingredients like the cremefraiche, good qualityparmesan and jalapenos asI have used today.

Welsh rarebit is aclassic supper dish and abit like a flash scrambledeggs with the addedsophisticated flavours ofgood mustard, ale,Worcestershire sauce andaged cheddar cheese, served on crusty toastedrye bread. This dish alsoworks well served onsmaller pieces of toast andthen served on smallerplates so your guests can allenjoy a taste without thedish being the entire meal.

LLife is a balance between work and play andso it is with our tummies.Digestive upsets, nausea, vomiting and

diarhorrea are nature’s protest marches. Andwhen the placards are waving because of toomuch of the wrong food or not enough of theright food we feel drained, lacking in energy andprone to just about every bug and virus doingthe rounds. One man who knows more than most aboutalimentary balance is Invercargill’s Brian Kirkerwho, with wife Sharon, manufactures anddistributes Kirker Health Yoghurt Capsules.Crammed full of probiotics, thecapsulescontain“good”bacteria for a healthier digestive system, which is the motor to our bodies. They contain Lactobacillus Acidophilus, which extract goodness from the food we eat;Lactobacillus Bifidus, which extract waste andtoxins from the body and pass them in a bowelmotion; and Lactobacillus Bulgaricus and

Steptococcus Thermophilus, which help breakdown food in the upper and lower part of thestomach.Thosewho just like small words simply call themgood bugs or probiotics.Brian puts it in perspective.“The bacteria, good and bad, that live in ourdigestive system are there naturally. In balance, they help our digestive system work efficientlyby extracting all the goodness fromwhatwe eat, circulating the goodness by passing it into thebloodstream. The waste then moves throughour intestinal tract in the usual manner,” Briansaid. The Invercargill business couple are celebrating17 years of marketing these good bugs this yearwith a growing number of satisfied and repeatcustomers and a warm feeling knowing theirproduct has contributed so much to the qualityof life of so many customers. Those peopleinclude sportspeople, those in high-stress jobs,

farmers, those recovering from illness andsurgery, and people who “just want to feel goodeach day”.Capsules have clear advantages, Brian said. The good bugs are in a suspended state afterbeing freeze processed. All they need is warmthand moisture to reactivate, conditions foundin the stomach. They are convenient to havein the house, on an aircraft, in travel bags andanywhere where a long shelf life is required. It makes them ideal for mail-order.Brian and Sharon offer a personal telephoneservice to their online customers.

RatsmakefunpetsMy daughter is desperate for a pet rat. Arethey dirty? Have you any tips for providinga clean and healthy environment for one?

Contrary to popular belief, rats areactually very clean animals and makefantastic pets. When handled regularlythey are very friendly and can betrained to do all sorts of tricks. However, rats are very social animals so it wouldbe great if you could keep two of them sothat they’ve got company.

Rats can and do get quite big andthey are intelligent, curious and active. For these reasons, they need a largesecure cage with height and width, which gives them plenty of room to playand climb. They appreciate soft beddingto nest in and a place to snuggle awayand hide when they sleep. Rat-sizedhammocks are perfect and they lovethem.

Rats are prone to respiratorydiseases so their cage needs to be wellventilated and the bedding needs to bedust free. Feed rats a complete andbalanced commercial diet as well asfresh vegetables. Ensure you provideclean fresh water daily and their cagesare cleaned thoroughly at least weekly.

Your local pet store will be able togive you further advice; they will alsohave suitable commercial dust freebedding, a selection of cages and evenrat hammocks.

AMBIENCEBY METRO

- anotherindustry firstConcentrating on cleaner and more

efficient wood fires has been asuccessful strategy for the country’slargest wood fire manufacturer, Metrofires. Ongoing research and developmentcoupled with innovative product designhas seen the company gain a number offirsts over the years. Again in 2012, theTaranaki owned and operated company hasachieved another first with the launch ofthe impressive new Ambience Series.

Energy efficiency features enabling woodfires to heat the entire home are provingpopular according to Metro’s ManagingDirector, Darin Butler. Mr. Butler says “thecompany has invested a huge amount ofresources over the years developing Metro’swood fire technology and the latest firesto roll off the production line are proof ofthat.”

“We are getting a lot of interest in our newAmbience Series, with the first modelsbeing released this year. Burning cleaner, more efficiently and producing incredibleradiant heat through the large ‘one-piece’glass front. The Ambie Plus is Metro’scleanest burning wood fire achievinga tested emission of under 0.5gms ofparticulate per kg of fuel burnt, well underthe National Environmental Standard (NES)of 1.5gms, and this is with a wetback fitted!”

“We’ve designed the Ambience Series withstyle and performance in mind. The AmbiePlus boasts extremely high performancewith 20kW of heat output, capable ofheating 220m2 and can operate with orwithout a wetback whilst meeting thestringent clean air standards. Available ineither high gloss black or striking whitevitreous enamel, there is nothing else onthe market that comes close” says MrButler.

Mr. Butler continues, “as well as the need tocomply with clean air standards, consumerswere looking for heating solutions toprovide cost effective ways of heating theirentire home. With power and gas prices onthe rise, and the prediction of a long coldwinter, homeowners are looking for morereliable, cost effective options for heatingwater and their homes” he said.

“With the costs of energy increasing, one of the main advantages of a woodfire is the overall running cost. One ofthe cheapest and also environmentallysound home-heating options is firewoodin a modern wood fire. Firewood is a verycost effective fuel, with most farmersable to source cheaply or even free fromtheir own properties, and with the cleanburning Ambience Series home ownersare now getting more efficiency and heatoutput than ever before.” From the initialspark to the final embers burning out,the new Ambience Series by Metro is theembodiment of minimalist design, smoothstyling and performance.

Windcausesissues

ByMARK THOMASFire Risk Management Officer

DAMAGE:Storm damage has kept firefightersbusy over the last week. Photo:File

This week has been affected, once again,by weather with last weekend’s windcausing a few problems.

Trees over power lines, and later whenthe rain and hail arrived, leaks and floodkept some of our crews busy.

Often with the tree situation we’ll keepthe area safe until an arborist arrives butoccasionally, as in QE II Drive on Sunday, the difficulty in finding such an expertmeans our blokes will rip into the workwith the wee chainsaws we carry.

Sockburn’s fire crew were called toLongspur Avenue in Halswell on Tuesdayto a fire in a clothes drier.

They arrived to find the drier had beendragged outside by the occupant and thefire was out.

Unfortunately in doing so thehouseholder had ingested a good dose ofsmoke and had to be taken to hospital fortreatment.

You can’t criticise him.He quite possibly saved the building. But he did so at his personal cost.Hope he’s OK now.Four kitchen fires this week.A third of accidental house fires start

here.Again, please stay in the kitchen when

cooking on the stove top!Arson also showed it’s ugly face again

in the east last weekend with a red zonehouse burnt down and a bus and truck in ayard in Owles Terrace deliberately set onfire.

The bus was for sale.It was not insured. The low-life responsible has cost an

ordinary, decent citizen thousands ofdollars loss.

For what? I’ll never understand.

PAPANUI’S PAST

Rural Section 308 on the east side of the MainNorth Rd was one of the original 100 acreblocks that dotted the Papanui area in the1850’s.

It wasn’t long before the frontage on theMain North Rd was subdivided off for 5residential sections. Between sections 3 and4, space was left for an Accommodation Rdgiving access to the area behind.

The 64 acres that remained is thought tohave been leased out for farming until theland was further subdivided in the late 1880’searly 1890’s.

The Accommodation Rd was thenextended to join up with Grants Rd. This roadthen took the name of Greens Rd and waslater renamed Grassmere St.

The land here was very wet with layers ofpeat and clay. The water table was very highand you didn’t have to dig very deep to findtree stumps, branches and pieces of manuka.

Even in the 1940’s this area was stillpaddocks with just a few farm sheds and veryfew houses.

In December 1942 Charles Wildbore, a sawmiller from Hororata, bought one of the 6acre blocks of land on the south side of theroad. His portable sawmill, known as SelwynCasewoods, had been dismantled, transported to Papanui and was rebuilt to bea more permanent mill.

Originally driven off a tractor, it was nowdriven by a 50 horse power electric motor.

This mill kept up to 10 men employed and

in later years this number increased to 15 or16. Charles died in 1944 leaving his wife,Ellen, and their four sons to carry on thebusiness that had been named SelwynCasewoods .

Douglas, although still in his teens, tookover the management.

Most of the trees were sourced from theCulverden and Waiau districts.

They were sent by rail to the Papanuisiding where they were unloaded and takento the mill by truck.

The 1940’s and 50’s were not easy times forsmall businesses and the Wildbore’s leasedthe business to Mr Neil McVicar Snr,retaining Douglas Wildbore as mill manager.McVicars is now a well known name in thetimber industry.

In 1961 McVicar’s bought the business andthe name changed to Selwyn CasewoodsMcVicar Ltd. Douglas Wildbore stayed on asthe manager.

On the October 24 1968, disaster struck.Thieves broke into the office with the

intention of breaking into the safe. Not beingable to remove it or even open it, they set fireto the building. The fire spread quickly andthe whole mill was destroyed. The mill atGrassmere Street was never rebuilt.

Mr Dave Nicoll later purchased theproperty and built new premises for hisestablished motor engineering businessthere.

Today this property on Grassmere St isstill a very large section with a new buildingunder construction.
