They are drawing up aus- terity packages — ways to cut costs by eliminating waste, and axing programs and projects considered unnecessary. Treasurer Robyn Lambley said: ‘‘All departmental and agency heads have been asked to find savings as part of the Government’s response to the titanic budget deficit and unsu- stainable levels of debt. ‘‘No targets have been set and no decisions made.’’ She said details of saving would be outlined in a mini- Budget on December 4. But Ms Lambley said that there would be no cutbacks in services. ‘‘The Government is commit- ted to maintaining frontline services,’’ she said. Chief Minister Terry Mills hinted many executive con- tracts would not be renewed. He said that departmental heads had been told they must maintain a ‘‘clear line of sight’’ between them and service delivery. Labor has said that the cuts would cost jobs and vital services. The NT Government has de- clared it will balance the Bud- get by the end of its first parlia- mentary term in four years. Ms Lambley said the new CLP administration had in- herited an $860 million deficit from Labor. ALP leader and former treas- urer Delia Lawrie said the debt was only $590 million. Both sides agree that the higher figure is reached by adding money owed by Darwin port and the Power and Water Corporation. The Government is expected to save money by: NOT renewing many of the 548 executive contract public servants when their terms have expired; SCRAPPING several major Power and Water projects, such as upgrades to the Lud- milla and Leanyer sewerage works; and SELLING the NT Fleet, the agency that manages Govern- ment vehicles. Katherine cattleman and helicopter pilot Ben Tapp, 47, has beaten over 700 riders and horses from across the country to win the 2012 Warwick Gold Cup. It was Mr Tapp’s first victory in the com- petition since his first Warwick Gold Cup in 1991. Tapp is a prolific campdrafter and has won many titles but said this was the high- light of his career and the event was the ‘‘top of the tree’’ for the sport. Not willing to take all the credit, Mr Tapp said his horse Cool Dust, who he’s had since she was a foal, was one of the best in the business. ‘‘I’ve got an ex- tremely good mare,’’ he said. The week-long com- petition was tight and hard fought. Mr Tapp finished on top in a tie for points with his best mate and multiple Warwick Gold Cup champion Terry Hall from Goondiwindi. The friends were forced to ‘‘ride-off’’ for the title. The Territor- ian rode first returning an impressive score of 91 which meant Mr Hall had to produce some- thing special. ‘‘I knew it was going to be close either way,’’ Mr Tapp said. ‘‘I was thinking: ‘If he does better, then that’s just how it is’.’’ But Mr Hall could only muster 90 points, handing his mate the ti- tle by a single point. Carroll back for Olympic parade DARWIN Olympic bronze medallist Joel Carroll will return home this week to cele- brate his win. He will be one of seven Olympians, in- cluding six-time para- lympian Hamish Mac- Donald, who will hit the Top End as part of the 2012 Australian Olym- pic Team Welcome Home Celebrations. Carroll won bronze at the London Olympics in August with national hockey squad the Kookaburras. Joining Carroll at the parade will be fellow Olym- pians David Smith, Nina Curtis, Jessica Fox, Brooke Pratley and Ashleigh Southern. Carroll, 26, has play- ed for University in the Darwin Hockey Associ- ation A-Grade league and for the Territory Stingers in the Austral- ian Hockey League. He won gold with the Kookaburras in the 2010 Delhi Common- wealth Games. The athletes’ street parade will start from The Esplanade and end in Austin Lane from 11.30am on Friday. It will be followed by a public meet and greet at Raintree Park.
