COVERSTORY
The HistoryThe event was conceived in the
early ‘70s by the PCSO Board of Directors headed by chairman and general manager Nereo C. Andolong. The motivation for instituting the program was in line with PCSO’s mandate to support the industry. The race and its hefty purses provide incentives for local horseowners and Thoroughbred breeders to produce more horses and attain excellence in the sport.
The first Gold Cup was held on 7 October 1973 at the Manila Jockey Club’s San Lazaro Hippodrome. In recent years, it is staged in December, highlighting the holiday racing season and serving as a fitting end to a year of action and achievement in the sport.

won virtually unopposed, capping an impressive career. In 1981 and 1982, Herminia Mamon’s Fair and Square won back-to-back, both times under the reinsmanship of the “maestro”, Jesus Guce.
The feat was duplicated in 1989 and 1990 by Toshio Abe’s Sun Dancer, a plucky filly guided on both occasions by Eduardo Domingo Jr.,
the “gentleman rider”.Other track stars which have won
the Gold Cup two-in-a-row are Chito Arceo’s Bulldozer (1996 and 1997), both times under Joe Noel Camu, and Wind Blown, which won in 2000 when owned by Leonardo Javier Jr. and in 2001 under the ownership of Herminio S. Esguerra.

of this race were the dramatic rally from last by Rolando Rojas’ Crown Colony, winner in 1994; Rojas’ Real Top setting a track record in 1998 to crown an impressive year of sweeping the year’s major stakes races including a slam of the Triple Crown; and the thrilling neck-and-neck stretch duel between Triple Crown winner West Bound of C&H Enterprises and longshot Red Star Rising of Francis Trillana, resulting in a win by the latter.
The 8th edition
Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur Abalos’ Ibarra, the victor in 2008, was denied the chance for a two-peat in 2009 by Don Enrico. Ibarra attempts another win this year. Also trying for another Gold Cup victory is Antonio Tan’s Native Land, 2007 Gold Cup winner and the oldest horse in this race at nine years old. Tan’s Shining Fame, a 2009 contestant, is back on this year’s lineup.
Expected to emerge as favorites are Francis Lim’s Yes Pogi, a two-leg
Triple Crown winner, and Esguerra’s Go Army, whose latest conquest was the San Miguel-MARHO (Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners) Cup 2,000-meter Classic.
Not to be discounted are the chances of Rita Pilapil’s entries Triple Crown winner Heaven Sent and stakes-caliber contender Lively Dude, and Deemark International’s Righthererightnow.
The PCSO Presidential Gold Cup is held in honor of the sitting president. With the 38th edition being the first under the administration of President Benigno S. Aquino III, this race celebrates the dawning of an era of hope and positive change. PCSO and the racing community look forward to more years of fruitful partnership for charity and sportsmanship.
A very merry Christmas and joyous

That was the buzz at the track right after Don Enrico won the 37th Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office Presidential Gold Cup on 6 December 2010 at the Manila Jockey Club’s San Lazaro Leisure Park.
Steered by Fernando Raquel Jr., the 4YO Philippine-bred colt negotiated the 2,000-meter journey with relative ease, preferring to run off the pace with island-born rival Ibarra taking the lead in the six horse-field.
The four other runners were Sword O’War, Dream Supreme, Shining Fame, and Dumadagundong. All broke well from the gate but these four were no match for Don Enrico
and Ibarra, who set as much as eight lengths between them and Shining Fame who was running in third.
It looked like a match race with the two contestants way in front, with Ibarra, guided by Kelvin Abobo, slightly ahead by as much as three lengths in the backstretch.
But come the far turn, Don Enrico began to rev up and easily caught up to Ibarra. The two took the home turn almost as one. Just past the bend, Raquel gave Don Enrico a little flick of the whip on the shoulder. That faint signal was enough to send Don Enrico into overdrive. The brave bay colt flung out his legs and ran the race of
his life, stride after patient stride sending him farther away from his opponents till he crossed the wire way ahead of them, crowning himself a champion and bringing home the gold.
Ibarra came second to bag a hefty P500,000 purse; Dream Supreme third to earn P250,000; and Shining Fame fourth for P125,000.
A heavy gold replica cup was presented to Don Enrico’s owners Lorraine Uy Wi and Gerardo Espina Jr. and golden trophies to jockey Raquel and trainer Arturo Sordan Jr.
Also present at the awarding ceremony were Philippine Racing Commission chairman Atty. Jose Ferdinand Rojas II, PCSO Committee on Races chair Atty. Jose Malang and vice-chair Reynaldo Empremiado, MJC chairman Atty. Alfonso Reyno Jr., Pacific Gaming’s Tan Eng Hwa, and other racing officials and guests.
Facsimile checks worth P1.5 million from PCSO and P1 million from Philracom were presented to the ecstatic owners. The P2.5 million total prize for first place made the 2009 PCSO Gold Cup one of the best-rewarded in its history.
Not as large a horse as his sire, the “mighty Wind Blown” (as racing commentators have named him), Don Enrico showed the legacy of the “winningest” horse in Philippine racing with his trick of pulling away from the pack in the stretch and going on to triumph by lengths.
“Parang ama niya kung tumakbo,” marveled ranch hands from Herma Farms and Stud, where Don Enrico was born to Australian broodmare Kayumanggi. Like Wind Blown, Don Enrico was considered late-maturing, getting better as he aged, like fine wine. He also had no problem with heavy handicap weights and ran well on both MJC and Philippine Racing Club tracks.
Don Enrico went on to win the Philippine Sportswriters Association award for 2009 Horse of the Year. His stakes wins in 2009 included the Philracom Garnet II, Amethyst II, Emerald I, Emerald II, Sapphire II, Yellow Topaz I, Mayor Ramon D. Bagatsing Memorial Cup Div. II, San Miguel-MARHO Jade Breeders’s Cup Classic, Philtobo Classic, and a rare sweep of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office’s First Gentleman Silver Cup in June and Presidential Gold Cup in December.
Lorraine Uy Wi and Biliran governor Gerardo Espina Jr., owners of Don Enrico, receive their replica PCSO Presidential Gold Cup.

LAST 19 December 2010, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes
Office entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with Ephpheta Foundation for the Blind, Inc. for the conduct of a special Christmas sweepstakes draw dubbed “That the Blind May See” as part of the Ephpheta’s Ruby Year celebration.
The proceeds of the draw will be used to establish an ambulatory eye clinic for the benefit of blind or

visually impaired indigents. The PCSO, being the country’s
principal government agency that raises and provides funds for health and social welfare programs for less privileged Filipinos, supports Ephpheta’s goal of improving the quality of life of the blind and to make them productive members of society.
This is in line with Article XIII of the 1987 Philippine Constitution which mandates the State to adopt an approach to health development which
endeavors to make essential goods and health and other social services available at an affordable cost.
PCSO believes that working hand in hand with Ephpheta, a foundation that focuses on rehabilitation and skills training programs geared toward the physical, intellectual, moral and spiritual development of blind persons, is one of the best ways to give the less privileged access to reasonable health services and promote a healthier Filipino community.
