It is amazing to think that we have only 5 days of classes left in 2019. Still, there is a lot to be done in these few days, with curriculum to be completed, some assessments due and preparation for next year. Senior students have been completing their exams and undertaking their Headstart program for VCE and VCAL classes in 2020. Students will have some holiday homework in preparation for commencing VCE studies and a separate Year 12 newsletter will be sent to all Year 12 students. At Notre Dame Campus, the SACCSS Awards Luncheon and Presentation was the culmination of our sport commitments for this year. Hosted at Caroline Chisholm College this year, the students representing NDC, enjoyed a spit roast lunch, shared some stories and acknowledged all the great sporting achievements over the year, with representatives of all affiliated schools. St Paul's Campus College Leaders George Limperis, Elias Stefos and Joel Mutch attended the ACC Launch for 2020. Students were required to present a short presentation about the College to all member schools of the Association. A number of other students have also attended the student leadership workshops for sports leaders. Notre Dame Pastoral structure 2020 As the Campus continues to grow in numbers, it has become necessary to restructure the Pastoral arrangement to manage this. As previously announced Ms Revelman will be working alongside of Mr Barr as joint Campus Leaders. Ms Revelman will be Campus Leader for Marian Cluster and Mr Barr will lead the Callahan Cluster. The two Pastoral Leaders will continue with Ms Rushbrook having a focus on Marian Cluster and Mr Blassis focusing on Callahan Cluster. There have been two House Leaders appointed to each House. The current House Leaders remain with their House. One House Leader will be responsible for Homerooms A to E (Marian Cluster) and the other is responsible for Homerooms F to J (Callahan Cluster) [The table below provides a visual representation of the new structure]. Please note that students will remain in their current Homerooms. At this point of time we are finalising charter bus arrangements for both campuses to cope with the number of students living in areas not well serviced by the Department of Infrastructure bus routes. It is not easy to make completely accurate projections regarding the numbers who wish to access the charter as not all families living in the areas wish to use the service and at NDC some current travellers have indicated that they are going to ride their bike to school next year. Please respond urgently to Mr Vince Crimi at NDC and Mr Stephen Lunardelli at SPC if you wish to use the charter buses and have not responded to previous correspondence. It has come to our attention that there are some websites that young people have been using that has been causing some young people problems. This type of website allow users to ask a questions to any other user. The catch is recently that the person who asks is kept completely CONFIDENTIAL and their names aren't listed. Young people are using these websites to ask inappropriate questions about sexual preferences, suicide and self harm and other quite risky topics. Young people wanting to be heard will then REPLY to these. Schools and agencies have been having difficulties tracking the complaints back as they are not listed against anyone and have been encouraging young people not to engage in the websites. Parents are asked to be vigilant and aware of all internet connections that their child has access to. A reminder that bedrooms are not a good place for multiple entertainment/computer access. These items should be accessed in family or public areas. Friday 6 December is the final day for students. Finish time is 3.10pm. School recommences in 2020 on Friday 31 January. The article from Michael Grose this week is entitled “ Spending time with kids: How much is enough?” It looks at the need to spend time with their parents differs for different kids. For some, there’s no end to the time they’d spend with you. However, other kids feel differently. There’s no right answer. This is an informative article and we would encourage to take a moment and read it. David Barr & Chris O’Malley

Leader of Mission Integration

Characteristics of a Marianist Education Emmanuel College is based on the ideas of Fr. William Chaminade, the founder of the Marianist order. He desired that Marianist schools be a “family,” a complement to the natural family. He also wanted the schools to be a place where Christian faith would grow and prosper. He believed the best way to accomplish this was to develop faith communities dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. Building upon this, Emmanuel College strive to make the school a more perfect Marian family working together as a Christian community. We consider this the ideal atmosphere for working with youth in Catholic education. The essential reason for our existence is the faith formation of all members of the school community. The Marianist vision of education, based on Fr. Chaminade’s ideals, incorporates five primary characteristics called the “Characteristics of Marianist Education” (CME) Christmas Hampers Thank you to all those students and families who have brought in items for the Christmas hampers. With only a few short weeks to go, the more items we get are truly welcomed. If you would like to send them in with your children, they will most certainly find their way to a needy child in our local community. Please liaise with your child’s homeroom teachers to identify what goods are best to bring in. Moving Towards Advent The Christian season of Christmas actually begins on Christmas Eve and lasts for twelve days, ending on January 6. The time before Christmas is Advent, a season of preparation for Christmas. Christians prepare for celebrating the birth of Jesus by remembering the longing of the Jews for a Messiah. In Advent, we’re reminded of how much we ourselves also need a Saviour, and we look forward to our Saviour’s second coming even as we prepare to celebrate his first coming at Christmas. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming” or “visit.” In the season with this name, we keep in mind both “advents” of Christ, the first in Bethlehem and the second yet to come. St Augustine’s Parish Mass I would like to thank all those students who joined us at St Augustine’s Parish on Sunday, the 24 November. Coming together as a parish community is a wonderful way of celebrating our catholic faith together particular joining in our Eucharistic Celebrations. Mr O’Malley and Ms Tsang joined the parish on the day with the parish community. A special thanks to Bishop Mark Edwards and Fr O’Connor for making us feel welcome.

Prayer

God of power and mercy, open our hearts in welcome. Remove the things that hinder us from receiving Christ with joy, so that we may share his wisdom and become one with him when he comes in glory, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen. Chris O’Malley

Chaminade House Reports

A huge congratulations to the students of Chaminade house who this year took out the House Championship. It was amazing to see the Chaminade House Captains, Jade and Lachlan, receive the pennant and proudly hold it in front of the whole school. This is something that the House has been working towards for the past couple of years as participation levels and House Spirit has slowed increased. So this is a huge achievement for the house and sees everyone awarded for their hard work over the past couple of years. Our Year 7s head into the Lipsynch battle place on Thursday and I have been very proud to see the participation and enthusiasm of the students as they take on an Elton John classic. This has seen many students step outside their comfort zones and although there has been some pressure, as defending champions, no matter the result I will be very proud of them for giving it their all! As we come to the business end of the year I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students on their hard work and effort. Chaminade students have had both individual and group success and this is the path we hope to pave for future years. As our exams conclude I hope students have taken the opportunity to develop sound study habits, revise and strive for personal growth. Our Headstart program has started successfully this year giving students in VCE the opportunity to make become familiar with the content and hard work needed to succeed. We have also had some students in Years 8 & 9 participate in the Headstart program as they become part of the accelerated learning program. This is a huge achievement as these students will be working in VCE classes as part of their educational program. As the year draws to a close I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy new year. Use the summer break to spend time with family and friends, unwind and celebrate a successful year. I look forward to seeing you all in 2020 and hope that the year brings the students of Chaminade much success. Lucy Brown Chaminade House Leader NDC Chaminade House is currently finishing up a fantastic term 4. We have seen the departure of our Year 12 cohort and wish them the best of luck for next year. The rest of Chaminade House are currently working hard during the exam and Head Start period. Our house competition has now come to an end with Tasman homeroom taking victory again for 2019. Led by Mr Bowers, Tasman homeroom has achieved some great things this year. They have actively participated in homeroom sports, donated generously in our fundraising appeals and shown great leadership in our house. Well done Tasman! For 2020, Chaminade has now appointed new House Captains, Nikolas Marjanovic and Rhys Randall. We are very much looking forward to their support and leadership. Sonny Purdy has also been appointed Chaminade Sports Captain. Chaminade cannot wait for him to lead us to victory in the upcoming house sporting competitions! With these appointments we farewell Caelan Jansen as the 2019 House Captain. I would like to thank him for his fantastic leadership and outstanding commitment this year. Olivia Fitzpatrick Chaminade House Leader SPC

2020 is shaping as a great year in Daniel homeroom, with Winters House Captain (and College co-sport Captain) Elias Stefos and the Year 8s leading the way! Mark Turner Winters House Leader SPC As Semester 2, and the school year of 2019 is gradually coming to an end I sit in my office and reflect on the year that has been. Winters house has been filled to the brim with pride, love, laughter and support. To the ten amazing homeroom teachers who have given effortlessly to the students in their care, Winters thanks you. To the amazing student leaders who filled every corner of the Trenquelleon building with their enthusiasm and passion for this house of green, Winters thanks you. As the green soxs were passed between past and present leaders, I would like to formally introduce our Year 12 2020 Winters student leaders, Caitlin Sneyders and Luca Cagliolo and our Sports leaders, Gemma Dalziel and Emmanuel Burlayan. I congratulate each of them and look forward to all they are about to achieve. As the Headstart program for our Senior students concludes may each student find a passion and drive to pursue their best academic performance, even when it is hard. It is with sadness that the house of Winters farewells its former house leader, Andrew Damon. This house was built on your vision and I am ever so grateful, as are our students to have had experienced your pursuit of everything positive, deep and real. To all families, may we seek time to sit and reflect on the year that has passed, for the gift of children, for the gift of education and for the gift of each other. God bless. Pilgrims Journey

Pilgrims begin their journey with the blessing of the new Holy Trinity Catholic Parish On Sunday 24 November, thirteen Emmanuel College students who will attend the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Perth in December proudly turned up to be commissioned at the newly created Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. The students received a blessing led by Father John Healy and this was supported by hundreds in the congregation. Students also received their caps and t-shirts which they will wear on their pilgrimage in Perth. With Mr Sciberras, Mr Nicolas and Ms Hanna the students went into the city to meet at St Augustine’s and then walked together to meet many other hundreds of pilgrims coming from their parishes across Melbourne and Victoria. The excitement of this journeying together to reflect on what it means to have faith filled lives was felt throughout the day. Leonie Rushbrook Pastoral Coordinator NDC

Power of Engineering Ten Year 9 girls participated in the Power of Engineering sponsored excursion on 13 November. Power of Engineering is a national, not-for-profit organisation that has been operating since 2012 to deliver events designed for and run by young people to educate and inspire them about engineering careers. Power of Engineering brings together universities, the engineering industry, and schools to provide practical and creative experiences for girls to better understand engineering and how it impacts our world. The aim of which is to create opportunities for young people to explore, experience and understand how engineering can change the world; and by creating a positive shift in community perceptions of the engineering profession. To accomplish this Power of Engineering work in partnership with local industry, communities, universities and professional bodies across Australia to deliver a program of events targeting Year 9 and 10 high school students, before their senior subject selections. The program our students attended was held at Victoria University where Sarah from Boeing Australia provided the keynote address to an audience from several secondary schools. Students were then allocated two out of three workshops to participate in. Each workshop challenged students to complete an engineering task by working collaboratively applying creative and problem-solving skills in the process. The picture shows Angelie Aguilar and Erin Fisher collaborating with a student from Sirius College in the great marshmallow tower challenge. After lunch, we headed off to Toyota Australia to listen to and experience first-hand the contribution engineers have made to solving our future transport needs in line with the challenges posed by global warming. Students were introduced to Mirai. Besides making very little noise and emitting nothing but water vapour the only real difference with the Mirai is that it uses a different fuel source, hydrogen. The need to spend time with their parents differs for different kids. For some, there’s no end to the time they’d spend with you. However, other kids feel differently. There’s no right answer.

I’m fortunate to have the flexibility that allows me to spend a great deal of time with my children. However, my nine year old daughter wants to spend more time with me. My eleven year old son, on the other hand, is content either way.

Australia ranks firstAccording to a recent study Australian parents rank number one among OECD countries (including most of Europe, North America, the UK and Finland) when it comes to spending time with their kids. The lion’s share of this time is still invested by mums, but Australian dads are ahead of those from many other countries, averaging around 70 minutes a day with their children.

The source of misplaced parental guiltAccording to research published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, not spending enough time with children is the biggest source of parental guilt in Australia.

The researchers also found that it’s quality, not quantity of time children spend with parents that’s important for their emotional wellbeing, achievement and behaviour for kids aged 3-11 years. The researchers concluded that volume of time doesn’t matter. It’s much more important how time is spent with your children when you are together. This in no way advocates for absentee parenting. It’s about making the most of the family time you have and reducing feelings of stress for you if you can’t be around as much as you’d like to be.

Here are some ideas to help make sure you optimise the time you spend with your kids:

Create a tradition of one-on-one time with each of your kids around an activity that you both enjoy, such as a cafe catch up over a milkshake, shooting hoops or playing a favourite board game

Read regularly to each other, as these are special times of connection, especially in bed at night

Eat meals together as a family so you can all catch up and connect – this is worth its weight in gold when it comes to quality time

Pay attention to your children, watching for cues that they’re in need of extra time with you

Adolescents benefit from spending extra time with their parents. Through interactions with their parents

teenagers can learn to make better decisions about their health, improve their academic achievement and experience better wellbeing

Take an interest in their interests. Connect with your children through the activities that they value such as music, sport or games, even if they aren’t hobbies you don’t normally enjoy. Your kids will appreciate you making the effort and will respond accordingly

Be present when you’re with your kids. Research shows our minds can wander up to 47% of the time when we are with our loved ones. If you’re present with our kids, you won’t miss out on nearly half of that precious time.

Be mindful of the importance of unstructured time for kids. That is, time they spend playing alone or with siblings and friends. Play is essential for our kids’ wellbeing and development. Play changes as our kids grow up but as long as whatever they’re doing is child-led, it’s play. This is the time to leave them to it.
