Northfield Elementary School Career Day On Tuesday, May 15, 2018, Northfield Elementary School hosted their annual Elementary Career Day. Greater Cleveland Partnership Annual Meeting On Tuesday, May 15, 2018, CVCC staff members attended the annual Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) Meeting at the Huntington Convention Center. BPA National Competition A big congratulations to CVCC and Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School senior Adam Karpowicz (middle) who came in 1st place for Cisco Networking in the United States at the BPA National competition! Job Seekers Seminar On Saturday, May 12, 2018, ten community members attended the Job Seekers Seminar on “Interviews- How to Tell Your Story and Stand Apart from the Competition.” Michael Perry, President of Szarka Financial Planning and Investments a sought out speaker on resume construction, networking and interviewing, helped participants learn more about best practices to stand out among job candidates. Mike’s presentation started with researching companies and cultures to find a good fit before even applying. Once candidates have targeted their companies, he went into how to communicate to the business that you are a viable candidate to secure the interview. Once the interview is obtained, he went on to give participants tangible steps they can take to lead to success during the process. The presentation also included the top five mistakes made during an interview and five tough interview questions. Mike also explained Behavioral Interviewing and how to formulate a successful answer to these challenging questions. There was also good dialogue between participants and as usual, Mike continued to field questions and give feedback well past the scheduled 11:00 a.m. end time. Job Seeker Seminars are a community service provided by the Career and Community Resources Department at CVCC. Martha Sluka, Career and Community Resources Specialist and Karen Schroedel, Adult Education Career Specialist and Health Careers Coordinator develop the programs.

CVCC Cleveland Clinic Banner School Recognition Congratulations to Cuyahoga Valley Career Center for being a 2017-2018 Cleveland Clinic Banner School. This award recognizes our noteworthy success in leveraging community resources to advance student learning. The Office of Government and Community Relations’ Civic Education Department recognized CVCC with this honor. The Cleveland Clinic Civic Education Department was also involved in this recognition and offers programs designed to promote health and wellness, academic achievement, and career preparedness for students in grades K through 12. Due to the efforts of Diane Ellis, CVCC Health Careers instructor and Melissa Munro, Digital Design instructor who invested in implementing the Worldwide Classroom and eXpressions programs as well as the support provided in the process demonstrated an exceptional commitment to student enrichment and distinguished Cuyahoga Valley Career Center as a 2017-2018 Cleveland Clinic Banner School: a distinction earned by fewer than 30% of the 179 schools in four states that participated in Civic Education programming this year. In recognition of this achievement, CVCC was presented with a 2’ x 5’ banner for display. Live Burn Training with CVCC’s Fire and EMS Academy Students On Thursday, May 10 and Friday, May 11, 2018, CVCC’s Fire and EMS Academy senior students participated in a live burn training at Portage Lakes Career Center. This 16-hour training event is the final two classroom sessions needed by the students to complete their State of Ohio Firefighter level I and II training. The burn center was built and is operated in conjunction with the University of Akron. The burn building is designed and engineered to simulate real fire conditions that are encountered in today’s constructions. The students enter the building with instructors from the university, while specifically trained burn technicians operate the building and start the fires. Shout out to instructor, Pete Theodore for facilitating this event for his students, what an awesome opportunity! Former Student Visits Auto Service Technology Students On Thursday, May 10, 2018 Jonathan Hlauka stopped in to Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC) to visit the current Auto Service Technology class. Jonathan is from North Royalton and is a 2015 graduate of the program. Jonathan excelled greatly while at CVCC, he was instructor Mr. Lamatrice’s Outstanding Student for the year and has kept in touch since graduating. Mr. Lamatrice connected Jonathan to Metro Toyota where he started working while at CVCC on Early Placement. Jonathan has continued to work there and was recently promoted to a full time Technician. Jonathan is also a graduate of Stark State College. While visiting CVCC, Jonathan brought in a car to show current Auto Service Technology students, he discussed work ethics of the business as well as gave students advice on the Auto field. CVCC is so proud of students like Jonathan, and is thankful to him for coming back and sharing his experiences with current students!

CVCC Teaching Professions Student Giving Back Maddie Fichter, a CVCC Teaching Professions student, has decided not to have a traditional graduation party, but instead has asked friends and family to donate school supplies to children living at Laura’s House (The City Mission). CVCC Teaching Professions Students Sharing Award Winning Book with IPS Students

CVCC’s future teachers created an assembly at Independence Primary School on Monday, May 7, 2018 to highlight the award winning book, Carbon and Eco—Ohio’s Two “Green” Black Bears written and illustrated by Teaching Professions students, Abbey Bugaj and Maddie Fichter from Independence High School. The children were all smiles as they sat on the bear rugs viewing the hand-painted pictures and listening to the authors read their book. The authors were happy when students identified area landmarks in the pictures. Students excitedly moved around the gym playing the Animal Print game (student-created), rock painting, and learning about civility.

The day was both fun and educational for students of all ages. The assembly provided CVCC’s Teaching Professions students with a platform to learn event planning, collaboration, large group management, directing, improvising as needed, and modifying seamlessly. Moments before the event was to occur, the kindergarten teachers requested to be included. The Teaching Professions class handled the additional grade level masterfully!

Abbey Bugaj and Maddie Fichter came in 1st Place in the Children’s Literature K-3 Competition at the Educators Rising State Conference and Competitions in March. The story is about two Ohio bears named Eco and Carbon who journey through the northeast Ohio. The authors masterfully intertwine Ohio facts with the bears journey—a fun way to learn! Maddie painted every picture in the book and incorporated regional landmarks. An audio CD is in the back of the braille copy and will be donated to the Cleveland Sight Center after national competitions. Mother’s Day Pampering with CVC Cosmetology Students On Thursday, May 3, 2018, for Mother's Day, CVCC's Cosmetology students instructed by Mrs. Mormile invited the special women in their lives to come to CVCC and enjoy a morning of pampering and relaxation. The students got the opportunity to practice hair, nail, and facial skills while giving back and spending quality time with the important women in their lives. What a great morning filled with appreciation and learning!

Constructor for the Day On Wednesday, May 2, 2018, 48 students from CVCC’s Construction Trades, Heating and Air Conditioning and Electrical & Alternative Energy programs participated in the 10th Annual High School “Rich DiGeronimo Constructor for the Day” Program sponsored by the Ohio Contractors Association (OCA). Students enjoyed breakfast in the Valley Inn along with presentations from Matt Malone of Kurtz

Brothers, other OCA members and Josh Hayes, CVCC Assistant Principal. Following breakfast, students visited the Pinecrest Development in Beachwood. Pinecrest is a mixed-use lifestyle shopping center, students saw the final stages of construction as the facility prepares to open in June. Students then went to the Opportunity Corridor project where they saw various stages of demolition in preparation for roadwork expansion in Cleveland. Upon return to CVCC, students enjoyed lunch and more OCA presentations including the Regional Council of Carpenters. After lunch, students were able to network with businesses at a mini Job Fair in Conference Room A that included, Independence Excavating, Great Lakes and Kokosing Construction Companies, Kurtz Brothers, Ohio CAT and representatives from the Indiana-Kentucky-Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters and Ohio Operating Engineers and more. CVCC thanks the OCA for providing this opportunity to our trade students annually. CVCC also appreciates the great meals prepared by the Culinary Arts program lead by Kim Morton. What an engaging and interactive day of opportunity and learning!

CVCC NEW Mobile App. Filming with eSchoolview CVCC has been working on an exciting new project that will benefit new, current, and future CVCC students as well as community members. CVCC has collaborated with eSchoolview to create a mobile application to access information about CVCC and its many programs. This App. will be state of the art and an exceptional addition to the organization. On Thursday, April 26, 2018, eSchoolview came to CVCC to start the filming for the new mobile App. The day included the use of a drone as well as help from CVCC’s own students, including Autumn Cohara, Seth Harrod, Cameron Janosik, and Marcella Michalski who helped with filming. Also, a special shout out to Carolyn Bajzer who did all the voice over work for the App. Thank you to CVCC staff members, Kyle Livengood, IT Director, Diane Nemec, IT Department Administrative Assistant, Gabrielle Riley, Media Specialist, Kelli Buccini, Admissions Counselor, and Josh Hayes, Assistant Principal for their hard work and efforts thus far in bringing this App. to CVCC. Pickle Power with CVCC’s Teaching Professions and GIT Program CVCC’s Graphic Imaging Technology program and Teaching Professions program hosted Garfield Height’s William Foster Elementary School’s second grade students on Friday, April 27, 2018 for a Pickle Powerful literacy event which highlighted the book, Dill Pickle Goes to School: The Coloring Book. This award winning book was written and illustrated by the Teaching Professions team of Emily Agnello and Kayla Eber from Twinsburg High School. The authors chose to create an interactive storybook for children to color and learn to interact with and treat people with common courtesy, kindness, empathy, etc. The premise is that Pickle Powerful words and actions will result in Pickle Powerful results, which may lead to an improvement in how we act towards each other. The children were treated to a personal read from the authors. Emily and Kayla mastered their ability to change their voices and add emphasis where needed—the children were entertained. Other stations included the Musical Pickles, Pickle Challenge, Pickle Skits, and a visit from “Pickle Momma”. The children hung on every single word of “Pickle Momma” (Mrs. Everhart). She spoke with a thick accent

and had children repeat words with the same inflection and tone. The kids loved it! The children were captivated by her stories told and received the important message that “Every word, every action, matters. It can make someone happy or sad, inspire or hurt.” The Teaching Professions program is instructed by Josephine Everhart.

The Graphic Imaging Technology (GIT) program used Pickle Power to teach about publishing and the printed word. The second graders from William Foster Elementary School actively participated in learning how words become print while they experienced various equipment and techniques in the Graphic Imaging lab. Using teachings of Pickle Power, the children were given an in-depth overview of the importance of literacy and the printed word. They saw how double-sided copies became a booklet as they collated and bound their own booklet. Seniors Taylor Browning from Brecksville Broadview Heights High School and Hope Marder from Nordonia High School lead the second grade students in manufacturing their own copies of Dill Pickle Goes to School: The Coloring Book. Using their own hands and a squeegee, the children created a souvenir t-shirts extoling the virtues of Pickle Power. They were so engaged and listened intently as students Matt Griffie from North Royalton High School and Shakim Eatmon from Garfield Heights High School gave instructions. The excitement rose as the second graders watched a live operation of the offset printing presses that were printing bumper stickers proclaiming the message of Pickle Power (printed by senior Graphic Imaging Technology students James Sender and Matt Griffie from North Royalton High School). The last stop on the whirlwind tour of the Graphic Imaging Program was Josh Jastal’s, from Twinsburg High School, animated and live demonstration of cutting the Pickle Power bumper stickers down to the final size. The children laughed at Josh’s antics as he drove home the importance of lab safety. In recognition for practicing proper safety while touring the Graphic Imaging Program, all second grade students received Pickle Power stickers and notepads that were manufactured by the senior students in Graphic Imaging Technology. Demonstrating the power of collaboration with colleagues and industry specialists is the one of the most powerful lessons our students will learn. CVCC’s Graphic Imaging Technology program is instructed by Patrick Ruebensaal. What an exceptional day of learning for all!

CHHS Glass Ceiling On April 24, 2018, Cuyahoga Heights High School 11th and 12th grade women, with advisor Amy Hanratty, CVCC Career Specialist, had the opportunity to meet Erika Schnell, Assistant Regional Manager of B Spot restaurant. Erika was truly a motivating speaker, she discussed the concept of if you do the right thing, and treat others with respect, the right things will continue to happen. There are always highs and lows, she said, but explaining how she worked from the bottom up in the company, now working alongside, and assisting famous chef Michael Simon, has been the reward of her hard work. It was a great way to close a year of getting to meet many professional women from a variety of career fields. Thank you Erika Schnell for delivering such a great presentation to the Glass Ceiling group.

Ohio ProStart Celebration of Stars Banquet Scholarship Winner Josh Loeffler, from Garfield Heights High School is a senior in CVCC’s Culinary Arts program. Josh won a scholarship this past month from Ohio ProStart. Congratulations Josh and Kim Morton, Culinary Arts instructor, on a job well done!

Summer Camp Availability Update! CVCC’s Summer Camps are for students entering grades 5th through 10th in fall 2018. The camps run June 11 through 15 and June 18 through 22, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Supervised early drop off is included between the hours of 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. The camps provide a fun way for kids to "try on" a career in a given field with hands-on projects and field trips. Industry professionals and current CVCC High School instructors teach many of the camps. There are 334 students registered for the two offered weeks of camp. Camps that are still available include: Art and Design, Beautiful You, Computer Technology, Digital Animation, Digitally Designed, Health and Business Technology, Health Careers, LEGO Robotics, Movie Makers, VEX Robotics, and Video Game Design. Camps are $195 for in-district students and $205 for out-of-district students. Early Placement Student Employee of the Months Heidi Rembowski, CVCC Health Careers 2C and Garfield Heights High School senior, was selected as Student-Employee of the Month for April 2018. CVCC principal Mr. Hall and Health Careers instructor Ms. Ellis recognized Heidi, employed with Bartels Pet Hospital in Brecksville, for her exemplary work performance.

Ms. Diane Ellis, Health Careers instructor, nominated Heidi for this award stating, “Early in September, Heidi knew she wanted to be on Early Placement. As soon as she was informed of a job opening at Bartels Pet Hospital, she applied and successfully landed the job. She has been working there all year and has received “Exceeded and Meets Requirements of the Job” since completing her weekly job reports. An employer Early Placement Evaluation Form shows Heidi meeting and exceeding requirements in categories such as personal attributes and workmanship/skills. I am so proud of Heidi and her accomplishments this year. Besides achieving her STNA certification in March, she has also pursued the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification while being on Early Placement. Heidi has become one of those students I will never forget and one who is why I became a teacher in the first place. “

Heidi’s employer said, “She is a wonderful young lady - she is smart, hardworking and willing/eager to learn. She deserves an A+ for effort”. At work, Heidi schedules appointments, spins blood, helps technicians and vets, performs heartworm tests, calls clients with test results, walks, feeds and provides medications to dogs and cats along with taking x-rays. Congratulations Heidi!

Chalon Sparks, Health Careers 2B and Twinsburg High School senior, was selected as CVCC’s Student-Employee of the Month for March 2018. Principal Mr. Hall and Health Careers instructor Ms. Robusto recognized Chalon, employed with Cleveland Foot Doctor, for her exemplary work performance.

Ms. Laura Robusto, Health Careers Instructor, nominated Chalon for this award stating, “Chalon showed determination and out-of-the-box thinking in obtaining this position in a podiatrist’s office. Since beginning this job, she has had perfect attendance in both the workplace and at school, and has been doing a conscientious job in keeping up with her work at CVCC. I have visited Chalon in the workplace, and she demonstrates the same upbeat attitude on the job as she does in the classroom. Her employer evaluations state that she exceeds the requirements of the job. Each week she documents new information that she has learned, demonstrating professional growth.” Awesome work Chalon!

Local Student Wins Scholarship from Great Clips The franchise owners of local Great Clips salons recently awarded a scholarship to Chelsea Cepik, a former student and recent graduate of the Adult Education Cosmetology program at Cuyahoga Valley Career Center. Thousands of other cosmetology students across North America applied for the 2018 Great Scholarship. To be eligible, cosmetology students submitted their responses to questions related to their strengths, attributes, and career goals in the cosmetology industry. The Great Scholarship program awards $100,000 each year to cosmetology students throughout North America, with individual awards ranging from $250 to $1,500. This is just one way that Great Clips connects with cosmetology students to provide an opportunity to jumpstart their career. Congratulations Chelsea!

Adult Education School of Nursing Instructor named Educator of the Year Congratulations to CVCC Adult Education School of Nursing instructor Jill Pawluk, MSN/RN. Jill was named the Educator of the Year at the OOPNE Conference. Jill was recommended for this award by School of Nursing supervisor, Pattie Mandula, MBA/HCM, BSN,RN. Pattie recommended Jill for her years of dedication and service; Jill has been in the nursing field for over 25 years. She has been a part of the CVCC staff since 2002 and has immense teaching experience

which has benefitted both our students and staff members. Jill was also recommended for the award by fellow instructor, Sheila Loeding, RN and former student Lisa Janus, LPN. Congratulations to Jill on this very deserving award!
