FILL IN THEBLANKS

This week’s cloze test is all about a Chinese space station that crashed in space! We’ve made it a bit trickier by taking out 8 words. This is called a cloze test. Read through the words first and make sure you understand them. Then, read through the article. Make sure you think about the best place to put a word, not the first place. Careful as you go, as some words may fit in a few places, while other words will only suit one place.

SPACE STATION CRASH!

It was all over in a (1).

The Chinese space station Tiangong-1 fell from space and entered Earth’s atmosphere onApril 1, 2018.

The (2) Tiangong means Heavenly Palace, but the space station is no more.

The satellite was launched in 2011 but China lost contact with it in 2016.

It has been out of (3) and hurtling towards Earth since then. Many people feared that the station, travelling at a speed of 27,000km/h, would cause serious (4) when it crashed to Earth.

However, experts told us that this was unlikely to happen.

Once it reached around 70km above the Earth it (5) down. The intense heat of re- entry melted the craft and it began to (6) apart. Only about one quarter of the doomed station actually fell to Earth.

Tiangong-1 was about 12m long and weighed around 9 tonnes – roughly the (7) of a

bus. The remains of the space station ended up in the South Pacific (8) in an area known as the spacecraft cemetery, so called because it’s where space agencies usually aim to land spacecraft which re-enter our atmosphere.

eCall for Irish VehiclesSince April 1, 2018, all new cars and vans on Irish roads must be fitted with the eCall safety device. This also happened in all countries across the European Union (EU).

The eCall device, a small button fitted in the car or van, will contact Ireland’s emergency call answering service (ECAS) the moment the vehicle is involved in a serious crash. It will send details of the exact place where the accident took place. This should mean that ambulances and police will get to the scene of accidents more quickly and lives could possibly be saved.

Over 25,000 people lost their lives and 135,000 were seriously injured on EU roads in 2016. While this was slightly down on the 2015 figure, it is still way too high. Officials are hoping that eCall will help to greatly reduce the number of roads deaths within the EU in the next few years.
