ADS HAPPENINGS
ADS Industry CalendarFor more information on these and other events, visit diesel.org/events.
Vision:We, the membership of the Association of Diesel Specialists, see ourselves as the leading international organization of professionals that provides sales and expert service for yesterdays, today’s and tomorrow’s diesel systems. Our goal is to be the complete resource for training, technical service information, member promotion and networking opportunities.
Our Association encourages participation at all levels of membership and is operated with the highest level of fiscal integrity. We embrace the economical, durable and clean diesel engine as one of the key elements for addressing global pollution and fossil fuel depletion.
Mission:The mission of the Association is to provide programs and services to its members that will assist them in achieving success in the operation of their businesses in the diesel industry throughout the world.
Green Statement:The Association of Diesel Specialists (ADS) believes in the future of clean diesel as part of an environmental solution to global greenhouse gas issues. ADS believes in the future of the inherently more efficient clean diesel power plant as a method of reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. ADS applauds the work of engine manufacturers in their efforts to continuously reduce emissions in diesel engines to near infinitesimal levels. ADS believes that the use of clean diesel will improve the sustainability of consumers, businesses and communities by reducing the environmental and societal cost of their activities.
ADS does not condone the use of devices made to intentionally contravene emission controls for use in equipment or vehicles used on a regular basis. ADS believes that intentionally bypassing or altering emission controls in the name of performance enhancement undermines individual and group efforts to promote the use of clean diesel as a viable alternative power plant for the future.

ADS - US – Canada and Beyond: Over the past twenty-eight years, I have had the opportunity to visit many places in the United States and Canada through my affiliation with the Association of Diesel Specialists. This year was no exception. I had the pleasure of attending the ADS Latin American Conference in Costa Rica in May. Our friends in that region were so welcoming. Although, there was a slight language challenge for some of us, there was no doubt we were all in this together.
We participated in a fascinating tour of a coffee plantation with a view of a volcano in the background. I would personally like to thank Nora Chu, Ricardo Berrueta, and Virginia Morett for their hospitality and hard work. There were numerous
opportunities for networking, informative sessions and an engaging exhibit hall. In addition, I would like to extend major accolades to Rodolfo Oconitrillo and his family from LTD Central Turbo Diesel for welcoming us in their shop and hosting a fantastic open house for all in attendance. Business relationships were established and friendships strengthened.
Now, we are gearing up for our International Convention this summer in Orlando, Florida. I am sure you know that saying, “Work Smarter - Not Harder”. Let me just say, attending the ADS conference is a smart business option for me. There is great value in keeping up with industry changes, scoping out new professional opportunities, attending educational seminars, and exploring the wealth of resources within our exhibit hall. The best part it is all under one roof and the networking opportunities are endless. Like Michael Oliveros stated in his article in the last issue, “Can you afford not to go?” Our theme for the International Convention this year is “Reinvest in ADS”. I encourage each of you to join us at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel. Registration is open. As always, I am a phone call away. n

Time is Money – So Why Not Spend it WiselyBy David Fehling
Sure, there are a lot of reasons why you should attend the “ADS Show”, but the one that tops the list is that it is simply the best use of your time and money.
The ADS Show, which will be located at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando, Florida this year, offers many resources under one roof. It presents an opportunity for you to see new products and equipment as well as learn about the latest technologies, along with the chance to attend seminars describing these technologies and management techniques.
Because most people typically do not attend many formal education or training sessions during the year, this setup affords the opportunity to do both at the same time—saving you precious time and money. Top this with the opportunity to mingle, meet new people, and brainstorm about similar opportunities and challenges as well as to see firsthand how others have experienced success. All this makes the ADS Show a great investment in your future.
SO WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?Here are four good reasons not to miss this year’s ADS International Convention & Trade Show
• Value: No matter how you cut it, “The ADS Show” is a great value. The proof? A standard 90 minute business Webinar typically costs about $325. This year’s convention offers around 35 hours of mingling, learning and Trade Show time for only $700 (the discounted ADS Member rate) and that includes meals and receptions. You do the math.
• Great minds don’t think alike: You need new ideas, new solutions and new methods to see you through these times. And the best way to get them is to interact with other business owners and professionals and experts facing similar challenges.
• It’s all about your connections: If it’s not clear by now, it should be; your connections are the key to getting things done. Whether you’re looking for a product to add to your line or service, or someone with an “in”, you can be sure you’ll meet the right connection here at “The ADS Show.”
• The pressure’s on: The saying “There’s no time like the present” has never been truer. Prepare for the future now and guide yourself and your company to greener pastures. Don’t miss out on this once a year opportunity!
Social Media and advanced technologies will never replace face-to-face interactions, a handshake, a conversation or an idea shared. So, make the most of your time and money, register now to participate in the 2019 ADS Show! I look forward to seeing you there. n

10 PRE-CONVENTION 2019
Tyler Leefers Joins Area Diesel Service, Inc. Three Generations in Business
Founded in Carlinville, Illinois, Area Diesel Service, Inc. has supplied quality products and services to the diesel market for over forty-five years. In addition to the Carlinville, Illinois branch, they have branches in Pleasant Hill, Iowa and Indianapolis, Indiana.
Area Diesel Service, Inc. is proud to announce Tyler Leefers returning to the company to join management in overseeing daily business operations. “Our long-range plan is to have Tyler be the future of the company,” said Area Diesel President Val Leefers - grandfather of Tyler Leefers.
Tyler Leefers will join his grandfather, and his father Vice President Von Leefers, to continue the family business that spans forty-six years and three generations. “He is aware that following in Von and my footsteps requires sometimes very long hours, doing jobs no one else knows how to do, or will do, and full devotion to the service of the customer, our employees, and to better Area Diesel,” said Val Leefers.
Growing up in the family business, Tyler Leefers spent many formative years as a part-time employee with Area Diesel, which sparked a passion for the business and industry, and led him to continuing his undergraduate education in diesel and agricultural degree programs. “Since I was just a little guy, building injectors, I knew that I wanted to be in this business and industry,” said Tyler Leefers, “that is why I pursued my degrees and have earned experience and training in the industry after college.”
A commitment to furthering his education that took him nearly fifteen-hundred miles away from the Carlinville, Illinois Area Diesel headquarters to Montana State University – Northern in Havre, Montana.
In addition to the hands-on learning through the diesel technology and agricultural mechanic degree programs, Tyler Leefers also interned with Resource Power Group, a leading supplier of medium speed engines and services for large bore diesel and natural gas engines.
In 2016 Tyler Leefers earned his bachelor’s degree in diesel technology and associate’s degree in agricultural mechanics, and was quickly employed by Border Plains Equipment in Glasgow, Montana as a diesel service technician.

After two years with Border Plains Equipment, Tyler Leefers accepted a position with Southwest Ag in Dickinson, North Dakota. At Southwest Ag he took on the responsibility for most of the in-field service calls and in-shop diesel technician duties. “Tyler already has the ability to do service calls and will be able to expand additional services as his overall experience grows,” said Val Leefers.
Fully transitioning into this new role, Tyler Leefers has relocated to the Carlinville-area with wife Brinne, and their two dogs Henry and Ollie. “I have witnessed my grandpa and dad build and transform Area Diesel to meet the industry demands. They have done a great job,” said Tyler Leefers.
“I want to follow their lead to learn and grow, not only with the business, but also with all of my fellow co-workers.” n

HARRY S. CAMPBELLWAKE UP BUSINESS LEADERS, IT’S TIME TO GET REALNo More Struggle Between Your Personal and Professional Self
Reflecting back to time spent with one of his professional role models, Sam Walton, Harry S. Campbell takes the tenets of servant leadership and infuses them with his own business philosophies developed while working at Fortune 500 companies including Procter & Gamble (P&G) and Sprint, as well as smaller private companies. What results is an empowering and fresh approach to managing people and business that Campbell calls Get-Real Leadership.
Inside Get-Real Leadership (February 2012, Outlook Partners, $10.00), Campbell ushers in a new era of accountability, urging readers to Get Real with themselves, their motivations, and their belief.
Biography:Harry S. Campbell is a senior executive with a strong track record of success over nearly three decades. Campbell has been a President for two Fortune 500 companies, co-owner of an award-winning small business, CEO/Board member of an Internet start-up and founding member of the industry-changing Wal-Mart/P&G Customer Team.
He has driven exceptional people and business results
in organizations of 5 to 3,500 employees in a broad range of industries from consumer-packaged goods to telecom to sports marketing to digital media. He is known as an identifier, developer and motivator of exceptional talent at all levels of the organization.
Campbell’s views on leadership and business management were forged at P&G where he worked in Brand Management on Crest, Pepto-Bismol and Metamucil. While with P&G, Campbell was picked to be a founding member of the P&G/Wal-Mart Customer Team based in Fayetteville, Arkansas. After seven years with P&G, in 1992 Campbell joined Sprint. While there, he served in several leadership roles, culminating in his being appointed president of the multi-billion dollar Consumer Long Distance unit in 2002. His final role with Sprint was as president of the Emerging and Mid-Markets business unit in which he was responsible for selling to and servicing business customers across the country in the mid-market, small-market and local government arenas.
From 2005 to 2009, Campbell led the Consumer Markets Division at Embarq. Purchased by CenturyTel and now known as CenturyLink, Embarq was a Fortune 400 company with revenue of $6B. As president of Embarq’s largest division, Campbell was responsible for marketing, sales, service and support for communication and entertainment services to 4 million customers in 18 states.
His other senior management experience spanned distinctly different industries. He served as president/CEO of uclick, a digital syndication company that packaged and distributed branded content, comics and word games on the web. Uclick represented over 110 features such as Garfield, Dear Abby, FoxTrot and Doonesbury. ADS Announces Business Management Seminars at
ConventionToday’s business success is relying not only on technical expertise, but also increasingly on
developing and improving business management skills. Building these skills will grow business and help increase profit. ADS has added three sessions on Friday, August 2, from 1 pm – 4 pm, which

Biography Tom Shay’s experiences as a fourth-generation small business owner provide him with the knowledge and background to present tried and proven ideas to assist owners, managers, and staff with the day to day operation of their business. During the 25 plus years that Tom was a part of the family business, the businesses were ongoing laboratories for the techniques that Tom shares. He presents proven and time tried ideas on the topics of business strategy, marketing, staff education, sales, and financial management. A native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Tom started his first job working in his grandfather’s general store. Tom moved to Florida to join his parents in the family operation they had purchased in 1971. Over the next 26 years, the Shay family owned and operated three businesses. In 1997, Tom sold the business to devote full time to the development of seminars and writing magazine columns and books. In addition to providing proven business building ideas through his writings in over 75 trade publications, Tom has authored twelve books on small business management and a college text book on small business accounting. As a speaker, Tom earned the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) distinction, an honor that has been earned by less than 8% of speakers worldwide. As a magazine columnist, Tom received multiple Jesse H. Neal award nominations.

You, personally, and the business you work in, or own, will reap the rewards as you learn to teach the secrets of the Masters of Legendary Service!
Business Management Seminars Sessions
Getting Extraordinary Results from Ordinary People!

Seminar attendees will hear the secret of getting extraordinary results from ordinary people!
Strategies to Win in a Challenging Economy Yes, there is plenty of doom and gloom through out all the media. And as the media interviews individuals and businesses, they can find plenty that are screaming, “The sky is falling”. We can’t change what these people are saying, but we can control what happens in our business. During, “Strategies to Win in a Challenging Economy “, Tom will outline what to do, what not to do, and what to stop doing.

2019 Latin American Meeting Wrap Up
Record Leadership Attendance Made the 2019 Latin American Regional in
San Jose, Costa Rica Another SuccessBy David Fehling
WWW.DIESEL.ORG 27
Technical training, seminars, a trade show and social events made up the program for the ADS Latin American Regional Meeting which was
held April 28 – May 2, 2019 at the Marriott San Jose, Costa Rica. Over 100 attendees participated in the event representing many different countries in Latin America and from other locations from around the world. This year, participation from our ADS Executive Committee increased with attendance from our President, Laura Rountree, Vice President, Al Roberts, Treasurer, Paul Thoms and Secretary Bryan Menke. In addition, the Latin American leadership composed of Nora Chu, Ricardo Berrueta and Nicasio Jaramillo were also in attendance.
Prior to the start of the event ADS sponsored a three-day technical training class on the repair of the Common Rail injectors which was attended by 12 technicians. The training was hosted at the location of ADS Member and Host of the meeting LTD Central Turbo Diesel, S.A.
As is customary the meeting started with the traditional ribbon cutting and welcome reception within the exhibit hall which gave the attendees an opportunity to renew acquaintances as well as meet new delegates. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those companies in the exhibit hall who took booth spaces and for their support of this meeting. Once again, this year the exhibit hall was filled with companies presenting their latest products and services. Our central exhibitor was Lucas Diesel Systems with expanded booth space in the center of the hall with product demonstrations for all to see.
Following the opening general session, we heard from our motivational speaker Mr. Rafael Bruno who delivered a great message to start off the meeting. This was followed by three days of technical and business

presentations. There were presentations from the manufacturers and suppliers regarding new products and services as well as products specific to various areas in Latin America. One of the highlights of the presentations was Joel Lustgarten from Robert Bosch Panama. Mr. Lustgarten made an excellent presentation on the future of products associated with our industry. We thank Mr. Lustgarten and Robert Bosch for this outstanding presentation.
On Monday evening, we had our traditional annual ADS Latin American Regional football (soccer) match which is usually between Mexico and “the rest of the world.” This year was no exception; a good time was had by the players as well as those cheering the teams.

presentations, the entire delegation which included delegates and spouses visited Café Doka. This was a tour of a coffee plantation and its history that was born on the slopes of the Poas Volcano. Café Doka is the largest coffee plantation in Costa Rica.
From Café Doka, the group was invited to an open house at ADS Member LTD Central Turbo Diesel, S.A. The Family owned business treated the group to tours of their facility as well as dinner, beverages and entertainment. We wish to thank Mr. Rodolfo Oconitrillo and his entire Family and Staff for their generous hospitality.
The closing event on Wednesday evening was a celebration of another excellent ADS event with a buffet dinner as well as awards, recognitions and the traditional raffles. The Latin American Committee recognized the Oconitrillo Family for all their efforts in hosting this event. In addition, three companies were recognized for their many years of membership within ADS: Turbo Diesel Ltda for 10 years, Taller Padilla for 20 years and Electro Inyección Diesel Chu, for 35 years of membership in ADS.
