Senioenioritis is the tendency for high school seniors – feeling assured of a university slot – to lose motivation, stop showing up

to class, drop courses and generally slack off.

ritis

More and more universities and colleges are systematically revoking the admission of high school students who slack off their senior year.

Most students find out their admission status in the spring of their senior year and are asked to confirm by May 1 whether they are coming. But, acceptance to almost all schools comes with an often overlooked caveat stating that students must continue their work at an acceptable level through the remainder of their senior year.

Final transcripts are mailed to colleges from BHS’s Guidance Department before the end of June. At this time, college admission counselors review the student’s transcript to see if students have continued to maintain their academic status. If not, letters will be mailed rescinding the college’s offer of acceptance. The rescinded students usually are given the chance to perform well at a community college and be reinstated at a later date. For some students, there are extenuating circumstances and these can be explained to the admissions officer, but these are exceptions!

Student Recognition by the YMCA

ill Suwala is a 9th grade student at Brookville. She recently received a "Youth Volunteer of the Year" award from the

YMCA of Central Virginia. This award is the very first one ever to be presented to a youth volunteer at the Y.

Jill was awarded for giving 25 hours of volunteer service to the YMCA. The award was presented to her before all the board of directors of the YMCA, corporate sponsors of the YMCA and general members during a special presentation social at the Academy of

Fine Arts Warehouse Theater. She was thoroughly surprised as she had no idea she had been nominated and elected to receive this award.

Last year, Jill volunteered with the YMCA's "Kids Club" program. She was an assistant to Brian Keesee, who heads up the after school "Kids Club" at the YMCA. This program entertains and exercises kids for two hours (5pm - 7pm) while their parents exercise at the Y. Jill went to the YMCA three days a week after school to volunteer her time. She did this because she wanted to. She enjoyed it.

Back to School With Teenage Drivers

eptember means that students are back to school, and many families debate the pros and cons of whether their teenagers

should be driving to get there. Teen driving is a huge concern for most parents everywhere. For many teens driving to and from school is the first extended opportunity to drive without direct parental supervision.

A child’s readiness for such a responsibility should be determined by the parent not by a birthday, nor completion a driver education program. Successful completion of a state-approved driver education program does not imply that your child is an experienced driver.

Whether this is the first year for your teen to drive to school or part of the routine for a senior, remind your teen about his or her responsibility as a safe driver. Parents should be familiar with Virginia’s laws concerning teen drivers. However, you may want to consider what a group of parents from a Maryland suburb recently suggested as specific guidelines for their driving teens:

• A teen driver must log at least 1,000 miles or 60 hours of driving with parents before driving alone.

• No riding with someone who has had his or her license for less than 6 months.

• No teen passengers for the first 6 months.

• After the initial 6-month period, no more than one passenger for another 6 months.

• Driving must be with specific permission: destination, time, route, and passengers must all be pre-approved.

• Call home if any plans change.

• All persons in the car must wear seatbelts at all times.

SEPTEMBER 2007

• Be home at a pre-agreed time. Call if running late. An 11:30 p.m. curfew avoids the midnight rush of kids trying to get home on time.

• Call home upon arrival at destination. Then call

again when starting for home. The teen driver’s cell phone must always be on.

• Without exception, pull over to use the cell

phone. • No driving on major highways for the first 6

months without specific permission. • The teen driver pays for any tickets. • Do not leave the gas tank empty. (Define policies

about paying for gas.)

• Do not allow others to drive the car, and do not drive someone else’s car without a parent’s permission.

• Severe, long-term, non-negotiable

consequences for any drinking or drug use and driving. Remember, parents have the right to request that a child’s license be revoked.

Driving to school is a statement of freedom for our teens. With this freedom comes the duty of driving safely and responsibly.

Inhalants: An Invisible Threat

nhalant Abuse is the deliberate inhalation by “sniffing” or “huffing” fumes, vapors, or gases from common household and

commercial products for the purpose of getting a high. Most parents are in the dark regarding the popularity and dangers of inhalant use. However, children are quickly discovering that common household products are inexpensive, easy to find, and easy to hide. Inhaling household products is becoming one of the most widespread problems in the country. According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, 4.7 million teenagers have used inhalants at one time or another. By the time a student reaches the 8th grade, one in four will have used inhalants, nine out of ten of their parents were unaware, or denied, that their children had abused inhalants

The consequences of inhalant abuse can be deadly. Inhalants produce effects similar to anesthetics, which slow down the body's function. The user can suffer from Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome. This means someone can die the 1st, 10th or 100th time he or she uses an inhalant. Inhalants will also cause damage to the brain and other vital organs.

There are thousands of abused inhalants but a few examples are: nail polish remover, spray paint, paint thinner, computer cleaner (dust off), air fresheners, butane lighters, white out, and canned whipped cream, just to name a few.

Inhalant abuse is easy to hide, so look out for the following red flags:

paint or stains on body or clothing,

spots or sores around the mouth,

sore tongue or mouth,

red or runny eyes or nose,

chemical odor on breath,

drunk, dazed or dizzy appearance,

nausea, loss of appetite,

anxiety, excitability, irritability,

empty product containers that were full.

What can you do if you suspect that your child is abusing inhalants?

Seek Professional Help! Call your family doctor, school nurse or counselor. .

Ask where your children are going and with whom. Get to know their friends.

Know what they are doing after school hours (3:00pm - 6:00pm are critical hours). Monitor activities and don’t be afraid to set firm boundaries.

This only provides a brief overview of inhalant abuse, but there is more to know. Visit www.inhalant.org for more information about inhalant abuse and what you can do to help prevent inhalant abuse in your home.
