The win was Grosse Iles first News-Herald championship since 1996.

We knew we could do it race to win

and that is what the team did, CoachLarry Swick said. The ladies were deter-mined to get Grosse Iles name back in thestatistics this year.

The Red Devils effort was helped bythree top-10 finishers.

Freshman Sydney Kreger led theway with her second-place finish timeof 19:33.29. She was followed closely byChristina Hoelzle, who finished third andsixth-place Maria Gedris.

Catherine Polgar (21st) and CarolineFleming (23rd) also contributed to GrosseIles 55-point finish.

Our top three runners ran a smartrace, Swick said. They are gaining moreconfidence and gaining more strength toconquer all three miles.

Grosse Ile finished the race with eightpersonal records, five of them coming fromtheir top five runners.

Grosse Ile has shown continual improve-ment all season long and still have theirsights set on a state-meet berth.

Although she is just a freshman, Kregeris turning into the runner the Devils lookto as the on-course leader.

(Sydney) is a phenomenal runner,Swick said. She is a hard worker anda determined athlete, as are Christina(Hoelzle) and Maria (Gedris).

Kreger is not a big fan of running sec-ond, according to Swick, and he said hewas proud of her discipline to maintainher pace behind Allen Parks first-placefinisher, Sabrina Williams.

Swick said he constantly encouragesall of his girls to push each other and helpmake each other strong.
