Spotlight on solutions

Premset MV Switchgear Premset compact tariff metering solution withstands harsh environmentsMO6S Premset cubicle is the most compact tariff metering solution

Principle

The Premset compact metering cubicle includes:

> 3 ring CTs with LV insulation around shielded bars (50A cl0,5 & from 100 to 600 A cl0,2S – 5VA)

> 3 shielded MV VTs phase to earth (cl0,2 - 10VA)

> Shielded solid insulated bars

> Electronic tariff meter

Unlike conventional metering solutions which are air insulated (AIS technology) having greater width, Premset compact metering cubicle is 375mm wide and includes 2SIS technology (solid insulated and shielded) to withstand harsh environments.

Main points to rememberM06S compact tariff metering cubicle

> Answers the increasing needs of tariff metering and sub-metering, reduced maintenance, minimum footprint and cost.

> Includes 2SIS technology (shielded solid insulation system) for better reliability and safety thanks to insensitivity to harsh environment and very low internal arc probability.

> Allows tariff metering and quantity measurements.

> Allows easy front face access to VTs.

Applications

> Commercial, industrial and public distribution

> High end metering

> Power quality metering

> Energy management

FAQ

> Is Premset compact metering complying with international standards? Premset compact metering is compliant with international standard IEC 61000 4 30, IEC 61557-12 and therefore it has passed type and routine tests required by the standard.

> There is no fuse to protect VT, is it a problem? - Fuses protect switchboard and not VT. - Since Premset compact metering is able to withstand harsh environments including screened VT, there is no risk of fault on switchboard due to compact metering. - Many utilities do not recommend fuse.

> What happens if the CT’s rating is lower than 50A? Even for low loads (less than 200kVA), you can use M06S cubicle. For instance for a transformer 200kVA, you don’t need to choose a bulky CT 25/5 which could not allow to extend the power of your application. It is most relevant to choose CT 100/5 cl0,2S, much smaller, providing the best accuracy from 120A to 0.1A and largely enough accuracy up to 0.1A.If you want to use your own CTs and VTs, you can use traditional Premset metering cubicle M06A.

> What is the IP of metering cubicle? The IP for M06S is IP3X which is sufficient as it is a fully solid insulated and shielded solution (there is no possible external influence on dielectric behaviour).

Advantages — Fixed circuit-breakers bring higher reliability and reduced maintenance cost

> Compact solution reduces by 2 or 3 times the width.

> Withstands harsh environments.

> Screened VTs are not sensitive to superficial aging contrary to traditional VTs.

> Accessible VTs in front face are easy to disconnect for cable testing or to remove for replacement.

> Utility can use any electronic meters with this solution (power consumption of CT & VT are sufficient: 10VA & 5VA).

Schneider Electric can provide ION 8800 for tariff metering and power quality.

> Use of Premset compact metering in the Premset switchboard ensures consistency of the system: - same width as for other cubicles. - same bottom compartment as for other cubicles ensuring quick assembly. - same connection system as for other cubicles.

Time switches are used to accurately and automatically program the operation of heating, lighting, ventilation, access control, bells, roller blinds and more.

Efficiency at your fingertips!

The mechanical time switchesThey operate on an hourly, daily or weekly cycle: the same program is repeated hour after hour (IH 60 min), day after day (IH 24 h) or week after week (IH 7 j).

The digital yearly time switchesThey operate on an daily, weekly or yearly program (ITA 1c: 1 channel, ITA 4c: 1, 2, 3 or 4 channels - 2 external inputs).

The digital time switchesWith 4 keys and a display, they operate on a weekly cycle: the same program is repeated week after week.

Energy savingsTime switches start and stop various types of electric loads according to user-set programs. To reduce cost, the user can decide to automatically switch loads on only during low-rate periods. The programmed switching on/off of loads provides energy savings compared to operations without a time switch, in which the loads would be on permanently.

Easy installationAll the products can be installed easily on a DIN rail in a panelboard. Some “intuitive switches” offer screw-less terminals and compatibility with electrical distribution comb busbars.

Convenient useThe programs are defined according to the user needs.

On most of the products, the automatic operation can be easily adapted, for temporary or permanent operations.

On some “intuitive switches” this can be done without going to the panelboard, by connecting switches or push-buttons to the product external input.

Increased securitySimulation of presence with random operating mode is proposed in IHP “+” versions.

*All savings are estimates only and are based on an electricity tariff rate of 22c per kilowatt hour.Actual energy and cost savings will depend on individual usage patterns and local conditions.

The display stand at the HVAC&R was a first time event for Schneider Electric. As a company we were able to offer building and dedicated controls for HVAC efficiency. The solutions displayed generated several leads from this ever expanding market segment that have turned into solid enquiries. Scheider Electric New Zealand’s emphasis is on how to monitor, measure and control to ultimately save the client from wasted energy and costs. Reducing lost energy can be beneficial not just in terms of cost but also environmental impact and Schneider Electric New Zealand can help with exploring potential eligibility for EECA funding to acheive this objective.

Would Schneider Electric return next year? It would have to be a resounding yes!

Again, first time participation at this event for Schneider Electric New Zealand. Our value proposition around “how to leverage technology to design and operate buildings” was very well received. SmartStruxure Lite, NABERS NZ, enabled smart panel solutions, cloud based SOA’s displayed generated several leads. The energy dilemma is of major concern for facility managers. Schneider Electric can help clients by managing their facilities smarter resulting in not only cost savings but also environmental concerns.

Would Scheider Electric return next year? Absolutely!... with a wider portfolio of solutions!

The rise of consumer power – our changing energy marketplace was the theme of the 2014 EMANZ conference held at the Auckland War Memorial Museum on the 27th and 28th of May.

With over 120 delegates attending and 25 speakers from companies from various industries including City of Sydney, EECA, Opus, Powershop, Envirostate, NZGBC and BRANZ, the two day conference provided a great mix of perspectives on the changes happening in the energy marketplace. Energy management specialist, Scott Noyes performed MC duties for the event which he describes as “an intimate and engaging showcase of New Zealand’s rapidly evolving industry and emerging international energy management trends”.

Schneider Electric exhibited the latest in energy management systems alongside a Schneider Electric coffee cart which was a great hit with the delegates. The conference culminated with the 2014 EECA Energy Efficiency Awards on the final evening.

Schneider Electric was involved in the New Zealand Hotel Industry Conference for the first time, held at the Pullman Hotel, Auckland. It gave us the opportunity to engage directly with the industry and talk to hotel owners, operators, and designers involved in hotel type projects. On the trade stand, we had scalable solutions for hotel guest room control, room connectivity and building services management on show, to help meet any type of budget and technology requirement, from 3-star hotels to luxurious type hotels.

Tourism NZ is spending an additional $158M over the next 4 years, with a focus to grow business events, high value luxury tourists and continue to target emerging markets, such as China and India. There is currently a shortage of hotels in the main regions of New Zealand, such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, to meet this growing demand.

Would Schneider Electric return next year? We have to! We are here to support the industry, and help hotel owners and operators create that ideal hotel environment for our overseas visitors.

With over 170 buildings and 10,600 students across three Auckland sites, Unitec’s sustainability drive had to be wide-ranging. It started by installing a Schneider Electric Energy Monitoring Solution which comprised of more than 50 meters, Data Gateways and the Cloud Based Energy Dashboarding System “Energy Operations Online”, to monitor energy use and set up an Energy Management Working group drawn from the faculty and student body to oversee its strategy.

Scott Noyes, Energy Management Specialist – Schneider Electric, has worked with the Energy Management Work Group over the last 18 months, providing a monitoring and targeting service which has included development of Unitec’s energy policy, monthly reporting on energy performance and investigations to identify energy conservation measures.

Scott has found working with Unitec a rewarding experience — “it’s very satisfying to implement our solutions and services and have Unitec enjoy exceeding their energy savings expectations, and for Unitec to be recognised for their success”.

After-hours energy waste was a key focus which meant manual switching-off, as many older buildings lacked automation. Motivating security staff to get involved has seen energy use plummet as they became ad-hoc energy champions. A network of ‘eco-reps’ also keep a check on different sites’ energy use. Overall they’ve cut energy use by 8%, beating the initial 5% target — and saving more than $250,000 a year. Using software to ensure student computers are turned off has alone netted $55,000 in annual savings.

The judges of the public sector energy efficiency award said: “A comprehensive project with a holistic approach and far-reaching non-energy benefits. They’ve shown consistent improvement and great leadership with robust systems”.

Quasar Systems profileRemoving barriers

Partner Profile

The members of the 14-strong team at Christchurch’s Quasar Systems have plenty of common skills, but their real strength is a collective ability to remove “technology barriers” – finding easy-to-use solutions to help organisations monitor and lift performance.

The company’s history dates back to 1983 with the establishment of Quasar Electronics by Keith Hitchings – one of the New Zealand’s early automation trailblazers. Later, Richard Schwass (now Quasar Systems’ managing director) was running a small company (Power Control Solutions), building and installing the systems Keith was designing.

Inevitably, the two companies grew closer. They eventually merged in 2007, moved into larger premises and gave the new company its current name. Richard became owner and MD, and Keith remained a director. By chance, that development coincided with Quasar Systems becoming one of Schneider Electric’s Alliance Partners.

Today Quasar’s extensive client base extends across the country (many of which are in the North Island), and while it designs, implements and services a full range of automation and control solutions, it’s developed a specific reputation for advanced energy and power quality monitoring systems.

“We’ve developed deep understanding of power utilities and generation companies and their metering needs across the country,” says Richard, “band also a good understanding of many industrial sites, manufacturing plants, universities, airports, hospitals and commercial buildings among our clients.”

Common to all of them is the desire for accurate monitoring and metering – often to reconcile energy production/consumption billing and energy efficiency initiatives – and improving power quality.

“Utilities and large energy users need a firm grasp on issues such as power factor correction,

harmonics and load shedding, as well as sags, swells, transients – often at substation or grid exit-point level – or simply to trim power consumption. All of these require sophisticated monitoring systems and meters.

“Our solutions are designed to help energy users – small and large to understand their load profile more readily. For example, to see how much energy is going into lighting, heating or chilling – and identify how they can adapt operations to reduce the load. In fact, we recently put together a low-cost ‘starter’ energy management system package specifically designed to suit small to medium buildings.”

Many of the solutions Quasar installs, feature Schneider Electric’s ION meters and StruxureWare enterprise software for optimising energy performance within organisations.

At the recent Schneider Partner Conference in India, Quasar was awarded two trophies for the cabinet, Best Practices and Best Business Expansion Plan, in recognition of Quasar’s contribution and commitment in the Energy Management business.

Company cultureBecause of its Christchurch location and national client base, much of the Quasar team’s work is carried out remotely from a central operational centre. It comprises a tightly-knit group of individuals who thrive on the cross-pollination of ideas.

“I like to think we’re all technologists,” says Richard. “We work hard but it’s a very free atmosphere – we collaborate a lot and team members leverage off one another. Our diverse skill sets are complementary – and that’s very useful when tailoring an all-encompassing, multi-facetted solution.”

The remote capability proved particularly useful during the Christchurch earthquakes and aftershocks, when the crew was forced on numerous occasions to abandon the building until it was given the all-clear by structural engineers.

Another of the company’s strengths, says Richard, is the ability to make technology ‘work’.

“As everyone in the automation and control business knows, there are scores of brands and communications protocols, and getting cohesion

from an organisation’s technology can sometimes be difficult. I think we have skill in getting the best from disparate equipment – bringing third party devices into one integrated system.”

More from lessA large part of Quasar’s operating philosophy, he adds, is helping clients understand the capabilities of modern technology – and for getting more from one investment.

“We not only provide systems based on their dollar return but also their other organisational benefits. While any given solution will do what it’s designed for, our solutions can provide a number of other, perhaps less obvious benefits which can help multiple departments.

“We often find departments within organisations are unaware that the one investment in this technology can enable efficiencies across the business – whether it’s management, production, finance or maintenance. Sadly, that’s often because different teams don’t talk to one another about these cross-department uses of an energy metering system. Ironically, if they did talk and develop a unified business case for an investment that offered multiple benefits, they’d have a much better chance of getting management approval.”

The show must go on (TVNZ case study) Securing and maintaining a reliable supply of electricity is vital for any organisation operating in a time-critical environment. This issue’s particularly crucial for TVNZ, and to manage its national energy profile more effectively it recently invested in smart monitoring and metering technology.

TVNZ’s operations include numerous production studios and broadcasting facilities with extensive fibre and satellite communication links. Losing any of these to power interruptions could prove disastrous.

To improve reliability, reduce risk and save electricity, the organisation elected to invest in Schneider Electric’s ION meters and enterprise management software, StruxureWare Power Monitoring Expert.

The technology – designed and installed by Quasar Systems – not only monitors lighting, heating, and chiller loads as well as third party devices such as UPSs and generator controls, but also uses web integration to provide customised dashboards, displays and reports.

This provides two distinct functions: it is firstly an energy management system that helps to achieve savings, and secondly, a management tool for

the electrical facilities team. It allows the crews to manipulate the organisation’s load easily to meet its hour-by hour requirements efficiently.

In effect, the system clearly identifies how and where TVNZ is using energy, and where it can make savings. To ensure that all staff members are aware of the energy-saving strategy, the monitored data and savings are displayed throughout the organisation.

“Staff now have a much greater visibility of the electrical and mechanical plant, and can see how it’s performing in real-time,” says Lyall Sullivan, TVNZ’s Electrical Services Team Leader. “It’s much easier to make sure we don’t overload any part of the organisation and, because any power failures are revealed instantly we can take corrective action immediately.

“The solution provided to TVNZ demonstrated the partnership between Schneider Electric, the funding contributor EECA, and Quasar to deliver a cost-effective system that guarantees energy savings,” says Richard.

The system’s value was clearly demonstrated when problems at the Huntly power station disturbed supplies to the upper North Island. StruxureWare detected the event and provided detailed visibility of its effect on TVNZ’s electrical supply.

A major benefit is the ability to monitor, log, and report on time-of-day momentary overloads and power quality situations such as voltages sags or swells. This information also allows full analysis of issues via trend plots, tabular reports, and CBEMA reports.

Because the system integrates all three of TVNZ’s centres (Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch) and monitors separate electrical loads in different parts of each facility, the company is easily able to monitor and manage its national energy profile. “One of the project’s goals,” says Lyall, “was the ability to put energy information in front of our staff to create awareness about the building’s performance. If everyone can compare energy use against our business goals, they are empowered to contribute to savings. Awareness is a huge advantage.”

Quasar Systems, he adds, “not only provided a professional service but, more importantly, clearly understood that we were a TV station and not a factory or office building. It adapted the technology to suit us.”

22 Schneider Electric News June 2014

Dairy has a vast presence in Taranaki, says Icon Automation director Scott MacArthur, “and having been involved in it for some 17 years we’ve grown to understand the industry intimately. The evolution of process control in dairy has been a fascinating and, I can honestly say, never boring journey.”

Scott and fellow director Wade Lichtwark met when they both relocated to Hawera in 1997 to work as contractors on the upgrade of the Whareroa dairy plant. Realising that the local industry was being forced to use remote Automation Integrators, they elected to set up shop and Icon Automation was born in 2001.

Today the company employs 10 staff split between the Taranaki and Manuwatu regions. “We’re best described as system integrators,” says Scott, “and because so much of our work is with dairy, winter is when things begin to seriously ramp up. That’s when the industry has its quieter period and production facilities are shut down for maintenance and upgrades.”

“We do a lot of system migration – upgrading older PLCs and installing new models with more functionality. In our early years we did a lot of what’s politely referred to as “fire-fighting”. The dairy industry operated older technology and much of the work involved optimising process functionality. We spent some very long nights in factories assisting process staff to get the best results from their plant.”

Alliance PartnerIcon Automation’s relationship with Schneider Electric began in 2006, and came about through

a contract at the Kapuni site. “Until then we’d only had very marginal exposure to old Modicon PLCs, but the Kapuni job involved the installation of Quantum PLCs. From there, the relationship blossomed and Icon became a full Alliance Partner in 2012.

“Today Quantum and M340 PLCs have become a standard for us on the Schneider-based sites. With the enormous networking and connectivity features, you can be on any PC within a site or remotely connected to do the programming. It’s a huge advantage.”

While the installation of PLCs and HMIs is central to Icon Automation’s business, the company is seeing a lot more demand for Schneider Electric’s Historian suite of products. “Every site wants to get the most from its equipment, with the least amount of downtime. Essentially, that’s about monitoring and reliability issues, and Historian is invaluable for the analytical side of the processing.”

Keep it simpleOne of Icon’s core philosophies, says Wade, is keeping system design simple. “It’s very easy to make things unnecessarily complicated, but at the end of the day that’s ineffectual because when you walk out the door the client is on their own. We like to design systems the client can understand and use easily.”

The company invests plenty of time upskilling its staff. It has an in-house training scheme and the size of the plants operated by its clients is always an enormously practical advantage for trainees. “There are not many places in New Zealand,” says Wade, “where you are exposed to hundreds of PLC installations, some controlling up to 7000 I/O. It makes for very good professional training – we are very fortunate.”
