Dear Parishioners, Thank you for your cards, calls, visits, emails and prayers during my recent illness. The love and care of our church family is a blessing that means the world to me. As Zion moves forward into our next hundred years and we transition into the future, we had a well-attended annual meeting. Vestry members met briefly after the meeting to elect Bill Hewitt as Junior Warden, Jim Ruddy as Treasurer, Richard Seckinger as Assistant Treasurer, Greg Harp as Registrar and me as Senior Warden. Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., in the Parlors.

When our Rector announced in September that she had accepted a call from St. Paul’s, Dedham, we traveled to Charleston to meet with Bishop Klusmeyer. We were told that the diocese no longer has a transition team or any policy in place for churches looking for new rectors. In the alternative, the Bishop told us that he had had success in finding a “priest-in-charge.” After a year or two, we could make a decision as to whether or not we wanted to call this person to be our rector. The Bishop further informed us that he would be unlikely to find a candidate before late spring, 2016.

Concerned about the period of time that Zion would be without a rector or interim, Rev. McCarley and I approached retired Episcopal priests John Merchant and Jim Manion regarding service as interim rector. Although John Merchant, a resident of Georgia, declined, Jim Manion agreed to serve as a part-time priest on an interim basis. Rev. Manion is a retired priest in good standing from the Diocese of Delaware and new member at Zion. A proposal was drawn up and approved by the Vestry.

The proposal along with an accompanying letter of recommendation from the Bishop of Delaware, was sent to Bishop Klusmeyer for approval. He declined approval citing a required background check and required training sessions. While we were

disappointed that Bishop Klusmeyer has not approved Rev. Jim Manion, we were encouraged that the Bishop has 2-3 other priests in mind for Zion. We have not been told the names of the priests. Further, we cannot expect anyone here until after Easter. In the meantime, Rev. Frank Coe will be our primary supply clergy. We are thankful for his service to Zion.

While your vestry recognizes that we must work cooperatively with the Bishop, there is an urgency to move forward. The Parish Profile committee will begin their work within the next couple of weeks. When you are contacted, please thoughtfully answer questions and make suggestions for Zion's future: ministries, focus, outreach, and more. You know better than anyone else what Zion needs and where we can best minister to our community. Any potential rector must understand our needs and share our vision for the future. The Search Committee will seek individuals through the database with the National Diocese and also through suggestions you make to the committee. Having a wide variety of candidates will be a blessing. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please let us know!

Please remember that the search for a new rector is a recurring challenge and an opportunity to grow spiritually. Through prayerful contemplation and listening to the Holy Spirit we will discern God's call for Zion. Yours in Christ,

Amy Salisbury

Christian Faith Formation

February, 2016

Linda Work, Christian Formation Director

With the coming of February, comes a change of church seasons. We say farewell to Epiphany and await the coming of Easter during the church season of Lent. Lent is similar to Advent, but only that it is a period of waiting and preparing our hearts for Easter. To many, Lent is 40 days of fasting and prayer to think about all that Jesus gave up for us on the cross—his human life. Lent is a time to think about our sins and a chance to repent so that we can become better Christians. The focus of Lent is to study more deeply, to pray more sincerely, and to show greater kindness. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2016, when ministers mark the foreheads of Christians with ashes as a reminder that all Christians are created from dust and to dust they shall return. I encourage all the parents of Zion to

6

bring their teens, tweens, and children to participate in this holy ceremony. It is yet another chance to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. During Lent, our Sunday school classes will be learning about the ministry of Jesus on earth—his preaching, teaching, and healing. His miracles, called “signs” in John’s Gospel, help to increase people’s belief in him, but more importantly they reveal Jesus to be truly the one who is greater than the one who baptized him, John the Baptist. Jesus, the Messiah, ushers in a new age with power that can come only from God. The 40 days of Lent, which does not count Sundays, is based on the time Jesus spent in the wilderness. Sundays are not counted because Christians always celebrate Sunday as the day Jesus rose from the dead, so it is never a day of fasting. The number 40 appears frequently in the Bible. It represents a time of testing or trial. And so, ending on a lighter note, can you answer these questions? How many days did Moses spend on Mt. Sinai? How many men were armed for Joshua’s battle? How many years did King David reign? How many years did the children of Israel eat manna? How many days did Jesus spend on earth after his resurrection? How many days did Elijah go without food or water on Mt. Horab?

Surf Shack Catch the Wave of God’s Amazing

Love Grab your sunglasses and sunscreen and run to catch the waves at Zion’s 2016 VBS, where children go to the beach to meet people of deep faith from both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Sessions begin with the children (Surfers) gathering for assembly time at the Surf Shack where Skipper and Snappy the Crab Puppet introduce each session’s key ideas, Pop-Up Verses, and Wave Words to the Surfers. The Surfers go to Surf Central Factory via video to visit Ty, Pixel, and Epic as they build surfboards that relate to each session’s theme. Next, Surfers take the Epic Ride at the Story Deck where the Bible story is presented to them as they discover a common water theme that ties all the Bible stories together and emphasizes the amazing power of God’s love. Lifeguards take the Surfers to the Craft Hut, the Discovery Dunes, and the Recreation Station, where they enjoy crafts, science activities, and games.

Tidal Tunes provide music with hand and body motions that reinforce the Bible truths and key learnings related to living life with God. Surfers stop at Shack Snacks where snacks reflect the theme for each day’s session. Children, preschool through sixth grade, are invited to come and hop the waves as they enjoy Bible fun and creative crafts, water science, great games, and music. VBS will be held in the evenings as follows: Monday, June 20, (6:00 p.m.--8:30 p.m.) and Tuesday through Friday, June 21--24, (6:30 p.m.—8:30 p.m.).

Lord, who throughout these forty days,

for us didst fast and pray.

Teach us with thee to mourn our sins,

and close by thee to stay

Unlike Christmas and Epiphany, which take place on the same dates every year, Easter is a moveable feast based on the lunar calendar. Therefore, all other observances dependent upon Easter, including Lent and Pentecost, shift in relation to the timing of Easter Sunday. Because Easter Sunday is March 27 in 2016, Ash Wednesday is on February 10 -- forty days before Easter minus Sundays.

Claudia Frances Hernaman’s hymn, “Lord, who throughout these forty days,” Hymn 142, signals the beginning of Lent and is often sung during Ash Wednesday services or throughout the season of Lent. Forty is a number with special biblical significance. It rained for forty days and nights when the earth was overtaken by floodwaters, and Noah waited another forty days before opening the window of the Ark. Israel wandered in the desert for forty years. Jesus was seen on earth following the resurrection for forty days. In this case, Christ’s forty days in the wilderness provides the primary paradigm for the forty days of Lent.

Claudia Hernaman (1838-1898) was born in Surrey, England, and died in Brussels, Belgium. She was the daughter of an Anglican minister, and she married a minister who also served as a school inspector. Like so many other women hymn writers of the nineteenth century, she was devoted to the religious education of children. She wrote 150 hymns in several collections.

"Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days" appeared first in her Child’s Book of Praise; A Manual for Devotion in Simple Verse (1873). It was not included in hymnals, however, until the mid-twentieth century, when

it appeared in the Irish Church Hymnal (1960) and Hymns for Church and School (1964). By the 1970s, “Lord, who throughout these forty days” was a standard hymn in most hymnals in the United States. It is based on the account of the temptation of Jesus found in three Gospels -- Matthew 4:1-11; Mark 1:12-13; Luke 4:1-13.

As is the case with many hymns, Christ’s life is the model for how we should confront temptation. The first two lines of the stanzas focus on a response of Christ when he faced temptation; the last two lines encourage Christians to model their behavior on Christ’s example. This is a familiar pattern for children’s hymns from the days of Isaac Watts, as well as adult believers today.

The classic themes of the Lenten season are presented in the stanzas of this hymn:

Stanza 1: Fasting and prayer

Stanza 2: Struggle with Satan and sin

Stanza 3: Dying to self, meditation on scripture

Stanza 4: Penitence

Stanza 5: Looking toward the joy of Easter

Only one other hymn, “Forty Days and Forty Nights” encompasses the entire period of Lent and starts us off on our Lenten journey toward Holy Week and Easter.

“Abide with us, that so, this life of suffering over

past,

An Easter of unending joy we may attain at Last!”

February 10th at 6:00 p.m. The Rev. Frank Coe Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent.

Lent is the season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday. The ashes are blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call upon Him with repentant hearts.

St. Jude’s Ranch for Children

Recycled Card Program We Accept New and Used, All-Occasion Greeting Cards Year-Round!!

St. Jude’s Ranch for Children recycles your used greeting cards and creates new holiday and all-occasion greeting cards. Recycled cards are sold to support our programs and services for abused, neglected and homeless children, young adults and families.

The program is beneficial to everyone – customers receive fun, “green” holiday or other occasion cards they can feel good sending to their friends and loved ones, and the children at St. Jude’s Ranch receive payment for their work and learn basic job skills and the importance of recycling.

Recycled Card Program History

More than thirty years ago, wishing to show our donors appreciation for making St. Jude’s Ranch for Children possible, the idea was conceived to turn the previous year’s Christmas cards into “new” cards for the coming season. The recipients were so delighted when they received the unique “thank you,” that they requested to purchase the special cards. The program soon expanded to include all-occasion greeting cards.

How It Works

Operated by Kids’ Corp., a program designed to teach entrepreneurship skills, the children at the Ranch participate in making the new “green” cards by removing the front and attaching a new back. The result is a beautiful new card made by children and volunteers. NOTE: We currently have an increased need for

both Birthday and Thank You card submissions.

To Donate Cards:

Year-round, we happily accept used all-occasion greeting cards. Please review the following tips before sending in your donation.

Only the card front can be used (please check to be sure the backside of the front of the card is clear of any writing, etc.)

We cannot accept Hallmark, Disney or American Greeting cards

5″ x 7″ size or smaller is preferred

You can drop off your donations at Zion’s Parish Office or in the box at the church located in the Narthex.

WHAT IS LENT AND WHY DOES IT LAST

FORTY DAYS?

Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry.

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others.

Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection.

Things you could give up for Lent:

Television (or certain shows) The radio (all the time, certain time of day, etc.) Favorite foods (pizza, ice cream, etc.) Eating out Alcohol Soft drinks/caffeine/coffee Smoking Clutter Debt (using credit cards) Certain books/magazines (read ones that will help you

grow spiritually) Social Media sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) Computer use/blogging Negativity/Stress Gossip Road rage Lying Swearing/foul language Addictions Procrastination Working overtime (unnecessarily)
