2. Gastropubs

Amy is studying at cooking school. She is moving to a new apartment. The new apartment is in the city, and it is on the eighth floor so it'shigher than her old apartment. However, the new apartment is closer tothe cooking school than her old apartment. It is near a subway station.Amy is happy because the kitchen in her new apartment is bigger thanher old kitchen and she can do a lot of cooking there. But her newbedroom is much smaller than her old bedroom. She thinks she lives inthe nicest and safest neighbourhood in town. This is one of the bestareas in the city.Unfortunately, this part of the city is the farthest from her work. Amysays that this area has the biggest and quietest parks in the city.

A newspaper contains news, editorials, interviews, cartoons,

3.1. Broadsheet and tabloids

A newspaper contains news, editorials, interviews, cartoons, information about sports, art, music, books and generalentertainment, including radio and TV programmes. There is abusiness section, a family page, comics, generaladvertisement, real estate and employment ads (classifiedads).

The front page usually has an editorial, this is an article aboutthe opinions of the editor or publisher on something that theyconsider important. The editorial is sometimes called theleading article, the leader. However the name "the leadingarticle" may also refer to the principal article in the newspaper.

Most newspapers carry a few cartoons, which, if political, mayappear on the editorial pages, and also comics.

Advertisements usually take up a large part of newspaperspace. A clever newspaper advertisement will cause thereader to stop and read it. They are called eye-catching ads.

Special mention should be made of newspaper headlines.Different headlines on different pages appear in various sizesof type. This helps differentiate the material carried by thepaper and draw the reader's attention to various kinds of newsas well as avoid monotony of format.

Broadsheet is the largest of the newspapers and they have long verticalpages (typically 22 inches or more). The term derives from popularprints usually just of a single sheet, they sold them on the streets andcontained various types of articles and sections. The first broadsheetnewspaper was the Dutch Courante uyt Italien, Duytslandt, &c.published in 1618.

A tabloid is a newspaper industry term which refers to a smallernewspaper format. It is published weekly or semi-weekly. This type of newspaper focuses on local-interest stories and entertainment, oftendistributed free of charge; or to a newspaper that emphasizesensational crime stories, gossip columns, scandals about the personallives of celebrities and sports stars, and other so-called "junk foodnews". "tabloid" has become synonymous with low quality newspapers insome areas. Sometimes they are called "Compact" newspapers instead. So it's like a magazine newspaper (their sections are: "problem page"write for advice, "horoscope", "letters page" letters are published,"gossip column", "TV list" TV programmes for the week, "comic strips","paparazzi pictures" unauthorised photos of famous people).

Broadsheet and tabloid adapted from wikipedia

News are often about recent events. In cases where something has happened recently or in an unfinished time period,

we use the Present Perfect tense. For example; a robber has escaped with £6 million. The police have found the money.

Gerry Head has recently been seen at several London nightclubs with a tall, blonde, fashionmodelIf you are born under this sign, you can expect to receive some unexpected money in thenext week

The president of Chile has resigned

Dear sir, I'm writing to complain about a recent article

Throughout this lesson we have learned about restaurants, food, facts, and Britishgastronomy. We have also taken into consideration press and information indifferent media.

What else have you learned?

As far as vocabulary is concerned, we have studied vocabulary related tofood, restaurants, adjectives and press.

From a grammatical point of view, we have reviewed comparisons. Apartfrom that we have reviewed the present perfect tense and countability.

If we consider the language functions of this unit, we have studiedexpressions to use at a restaurant i.e. how to ask for something and the wayto interpret newspaper headlines.

With regards to pronunciation, we have introduced the difference betweenlong and short /o/ and a triphthong (three vowels together) /aυ∂/.
