Cowra Public School NEWS 21 March 2013 Term 1, Week 8 PRINCIPALS REPORT Dear Parents Come One, Come All. The Fete is on this Friday afternoon and we welcome the Cowra Community to the fete starting at 5.00pm. The Fete is the largest P&C fundraising project for the year and we are looking forward to a great event with numerous rides, games, stalls and performances planned for the evening. We are also offering catering that should appeal to everyone from BBQ sausages and kebabs, popcorn and fairy floss, snow cones, lollies and drinks. We have competitions in guessing games and treasure hunts, class activities and art displays. The P&C have spent many months putting the night together and the school hopes that the children and parents have a great night. Several large rides, jumping castles and giant slides will be here on the night and should add to the excitement of the event. In addition we will be hosting several performing groups in dance, martial arts and gymnastics during the course of the evening which should be a great spectacle. Other attractions such as face painting, Pop a Balloon, raffles and of course the Ghost House will be operating and are sure to please. This truly should be a spectacular evening of fun and entertainment and we look forward to seeing everyone there. I would like to thank the P&C for their efforts with the fete as the contribution they make in time benefits the whole school. Dean Hazell and Trisha Long have lead the team and I would like to thank them personally. As you could appreciate, the school has been very busy preparing for the fete, but we have also been working tirelessly in regular classes with tremendous progress being shown across the school in Literacy and Maths. The school has been focusing on the preparation of students for the upcoming National Assessment tests for Years 3 and 5 (Naplan) which will be conducted in Term 2, with all students being exposed to problem based question techniques. The students across Stage 2 and 3 have shown good awareness and comprehension of the concepts being covered. Once again our sportsmanship and manners have been commended in the wider community. MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence is a theory that proposes that there are eight distinct intelligences and that all people differ in their individual strengths of these intelligences. A person’s strengths impact not only on what they are naturally good at, but also how they best learn. Multiple Intelligence theory is very relevant to teaching, because it reminds us, yet again, that all our students are different and offers us a way to identify and cater to those differences. Earlier in the term Stage 3 discussed multiple intelligences in library time. We particularly discussed that no one intelligence is more important than any other, and that all of us are ‘smart’ in some way. The students had a guess at what they felt would be their strengths, and then undertook an online questionnaire that gave them a graph of their personal strengths. Stage 3 were very engaged in discovering and sharing how they are individually smart. We had some very interesting results. Most students were able to identify their own strengths before taking the questionnaire, while some got a surprise and only a very few disagreed with their results. Stage 3 recorded their top two intelligences. Below are the results across the stage. Regards Sheridan Oborn, Teacher Librarian Email: [email protected]

CANTEEN ASSISTANCE The P&C Association run our school’s canteen and offer an affordable and healthy service to students and staff. All profits made in our canteen are spent on projects within our school. Our canteen manger, Lisa Willis desperately needs volunteers to assist in running the canteen this year. Please consider spending one day a month or term volunteering. It is a great way to keep in touch with your children and their friends. Volunteer assistance is needed from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. daily OR perhaps 9.00am until 11.00am to make the lunches. If you could assist, please ring the school or see Lisa in the canteen.
