Wohnen, wo Zürich am spannendsten ist

Live where Zurich is most exciting. Zurich is Switzerland’s

world city and has in recent years regularly been awarded the

accolade of offering the highest quality of life anywhere. And yet,

with an area of 91.88 km2, of which 4.1 km2 extends over Lake

Zurich, and no more than 361,000 inhabitants, it retains the char­

acter of a small town vis­à­vis its international peers.

However, size isn’t everything: its range of cultural amenities com­

pares well on an international scale and its residents are envied

throughout the world for its many attractive quarters. The former

industrial zone has a particularly multicultural character. Munici­

pal district 5 is currently home to people from 166 countries. Their

cultures, culinary offerings, services and businesses strongly

influence the lifestyle and character of Zurich­West.

In the midst of this melting pot of cultures, on the site of a historic­

al brewery, Löwenbräu Black is now taking shape: state­of­the­art

residences with generously apportioned spaces and an exclusive

standard of building.

On the next few pages we will present nine scenes from District 5

that have nothing to fear from an international comparison. But in

spite of its evident cosmopolitan character, all this still remains typ­

ical of Zurich: rather more transparent, more cosy and thus also

a bit more charming and liveable than many other genuine world

cities. Welcome to the neighbourhood of Löwenbräu Black.

Zürich ist die Weltstadt der Schweiz und wurde in den letzten Jah­

ren regelmässig zur Stadt mit der höchsten Lebensqualität gekürt.

Mit einer Fläche von 91.88 km2, wovon 4.1 km2 auf den Zürichsee

entfallen, und gerade mal 361 000 Einwohnern ist die Stadt im inter­

nationalen Vergleich jedoch auch ein Städtchen.

Grösse ist aber nicht alles. So kann sich das kulturelle Angebot

international messen und es gibt viele schmucke Orte, um die man

die Zürcher in aller Welt beneidet. Besonders multikulturell ist das

ehemalige Industriegebiet. Im Stadtkreis 5 leben zurzeit Men schen

aus 166 Nationen. Sie alle prägen mit ihrer Kultur, ihrer Gastrono­

mie, ihren Dienstleistungen und Geschäften den Lebensstil und das

Gesicht von Zürich­West.

Mitten in diesem Schmelztiegel der Kulturen, auf dem Gelände

einer historischen Brauerei, entsteht nun Löwenbräu Black: State­

of­the­art­Wohnungen mit grosszügiger Raumaufteilung und

ex klusivem Ausbaustandard.

Auf den nächsten Seiten stellen wir Ihnen neun Orte aus dem Kreis 5

vor, die den internationalen Vergleich nicht zu scheuen brauchen.

Doch so kosmopolitisch das alles ist, es bleibt doch typisch Zürich:

etwas übersichtlicher, etwas gemütlicher und damit auch etwas lie­

bens­ und lebenswerter als so manche «echte» Weltstadt. Willkom­

men in der Nachbarschaft von Löwenbräu Black.

SoHo, Meatpacking District, TriBeCa: Viele der heute angesagten

Viertel New Yorks waren früher Industrie­ und Arbeiterquartiere.

Als sich gegen Ende des letzten Jahrhunderts die Betriebe aus der

Stadt zurückzogen, füllten Künstler die günstigen, leerstehenden

Hal len mit neuem Leben. In ihrem Windschatten etablierten sich

immer mehr Galerien und Museen in der Gegend. Damit wurden die

Viertel hip und sicher. So sicher, dass immer mehr Leute hier, wo

sich etwas bewegt, wohnen wollten. Ein Effekt, den man auch im

Zürcher Kreis 5 beobach ten konnte. Noch heute findet man überall

Zeugen des Wandels in Form von alter und neuer Strassenkunst:

vom Graffiti aus den 80er­Jahren bis zur modernen Kunstinstallati­

on. Zum Beispiel die rechts abgebildete Strassenmalerei des eng­

lischen Künstlers Julian Opie vor dem Migros Museum für Gegen­

wartskunst im Löwenbräu­Areal.

Wohnen, wo Zürich auch New York City ist

Live where Zurich is also New York City. SoHo, the Meatpack­

ing District, TriBeCa: many of New York’s fashionable quarters used

to be industrial and workers’ districts. When the factories withdrew

from the city towards the end of the last century, artists filled the

affordable empty workshops with new life. More and more galleries

and museums established themselves in their lee, making these

quarters both hip and safe. So safe, that more and more people

want ed to live where it was all happening. The same phenomenon

can be observed in Zurich’s District 5. Even today, evidence of

this trans formation is apparent everywhere in the form of old and

new street art: from 1980’s graffiti to modern art installations. For

ex ample, the street painting shown on the right by British artist

Julian Opie in front of the Migros Museum of Contemporary Art in

the Löwenbräu Complex.

Wer im Kreis 5 etwas auf sich hält, fährt Rad. Wie in der nieder län­

dischen Metropole, wo alle mit ihren «Fiets» unterwegs sind. Nur

nennt man das Fahrrad hier «Velo». Vom alten Schweizer Militär­

rad bis zur Carbon­Rennmaschine sieht man alle Arten. Natürlich

darf auch das eine oder andere Hollandrad nicht fehlen. Auch die

vielen Velohändler und ­mechaniker im Viertel finden so ihr Aus­

kommen. Zwar ist Zürich rundherum von Hügeln umgeben, doch das

Indu strie quartier ist bis in die Bahnhofstrasse und zum See hin schön

flach. So kommt man mit dem Velo oft viel schneller ans Ziel als mit

dem Auto. Und was gibt es Schöneres, als auf der Limmatstrasse

dem Sonnen untergang entgegenzuradeln?

Wohnen, wo Zürich auch Amsterdam ist

Live where Zurich is also Amsterdam. Any self­respecting resi­

dent of District 5 rides a bicycle. Just like in the Dutch metropolis,

where everyone is out and about on their fiets. Except that the locals

call their bikes velos. All types can be seen, from the old Swiss military

bicycle to the latest carbon racing bike. And the odd Dutch bike can

also be found among them. They all offer an ample livelihood to the

many bicycle dealers and repairers in the district. Although the city of

Zurich is surrounded by hills, the industrial quarter is nice and flat

as far as Bahnhofstrasse and the lake. So it’s often much quicker to

get to your destination by bike than by car. And what could be more

enjoyable than cycling along Limmatstrasse towards the setting sun?

Bois de Boulogne, Jardin du Luxembourg oder Les Tuileries –

wer bei diesen Namen nicht die Blumen riecht und die Sonne auf

der Haut spürt, war wohl noch nie dort. Das muss man ja auch

nicht, denn im Kreis 5 findet man viele grüne Oasen mitten in der

Stadt. Vom historischen Park beim Landesmuseum, wo die Sihl in

die Lim mat fliesst, bis zur Josefwiese bei den neuen Viadukt läden.

Hier trifft man sich, unabhängig von Alter, Geschlecht, Herkunft

oder Hautfarbe, zum Plaudern, Spielen, Picknicken oder einfach

nur zum Sein. Und hier nahm schon so manche Romanze ihren

Anfang. Denn die Stadt der Liebe muss nicht zwingend in Frank­

reich liegen.

Wohnen, wo Zürich auch Paris ist

Live where Zurich is also Paris. The Bois de Boulogne, Jardin

du Luxembourg or Les Tuileries – anyone for whom these names do

not evoke the scent of flowers and the gentle caress of the sun has

probably never been there. But there’s no need for that, because

District 5 also has many green oases in the midst of the city. From

the historic park around the National Museum, where the Sihl flows

into the Limmat, to Josefwiese near the new Viaduct shops. They

are meeting places for people of all ages, sexes, origins and skin col­

ours, to chat, play, picnic or simply to be. And the starting points

of many a romance: because the city of love need not necessarily

be in France.

Gläserne Lampen werfen bunte Lichtflecken an die gefliesten Wän­

de, der Duft von Couscous und frischer Minze mischt sich mit dem

süsslichen Rauch der Shisha­Wasserpfeife, während man es sich

auf weichen Sitzkissen gemütlich macht. Marokko? Nein, Zürich. Seit

1997 gibt es in einer ehemaligen Garage an der Gasometer strasse 5

das Maison Blunt. Auf der einen Seite ist es Café und Restaurant mit

schlichten Holzmöbeln, auf der anderen eine Lounge mit Sofas und

Kissen. Die Atmosphäre und das Essen sind so märchenhaft, dass man

am liebsten 1001 Nacht dort bleiben möchte.

Wohnen, wo Zürich auch Marrakesch ist

Live where Zurich is also Marrakesh. Glass lamps project

colourful spots of light onto the tiled walls, an aroma of couscous

and fresh mint blends with the sweetish smoke from a Shisha

hookah, while diners make themselves comfortable on soft cush ­

ions. Morocco? No, Zurich. Maison Blunt has been present in

a former garage on Gasometerstrasse 5 since 1997. On one side

is a café and restaurant with simple wooden furniture, on the other

a lounge with sofas and cushions. The atmosphere and the food

are so magical that one is tempted to stay there for 1001 nights.

Wohnen, wo Zürich auch Neapel ist

Live where Zurich is also Naples. The waiter brings another

bottle of Nebbiolo to accompany the first course. At the neighbour­

ing table a passionate argument ends in an equally passionate kiss.

Someone calls across to someone else on the other side of the street.

Only occasionally is the Babel of voices drowned by the clatter of

an old Vespa. There’s good reason why District 5 feels like a big Ital­

ian city. The first immigrants to make their mark on the industrial

quarter came from Italy. They brought not only their families with them

but also their cuisine. In fact, before the 1960s it was impossible

to get a pizza anywhere in Zurich.

Der Kellner bringt noch eine Flasche Nebbiolo zum Primo Piatto.

Am Nebentisch geht ein leidenschaftlicher Streit in einen eben­

solchen Kuss über. Irgendjemand ruft irgendjemandem quer über

die Strasse etwas zu. Nur ab und an wird das Stimmengewirr

übertönt vom Knattern einer alten Vespa. Dass man sich im Kreis 5

wie in einer italienischen Grossstadt fühlt, kommt nicht von unge­

fähr. Die ersten Einwanderer, die das Industriequartier prägten,

stammten aus Italien. Sie brachten nicht nur ihre Familien, sondern

auch ihre Küche mit. So gab es vor den 60er­Jahren in ganz Zürich

noch keine Pizza.

Was für London die Einkaufsstrassen Oxford Street, Regent Street

und Carnaby Street sind, ist für Zürich die Josefstrasse. Die Strasse

zwischen Hauptbahnhof und Josefwiese bietet einige der absolu­

ten Einkaufs­Highlights von Zürich. Anders als in der Bahnhofstrasse

mit ihren international bekannten und oft teuren Namen findet

man hier echte Raritäten zu moderaten Preisen. Mode, Objekte und

Möbel von Schweizer Designern, Kunst von Newcomern der Szene,

aber auch den einen oder anderen exotischen Laden, in dem man

vergisst, dass man sich noch immer mitten in der Schweiz befindet.

Wohnen, wo Zürich auch London ist

Live where Zurich is also London. Josefstrasse is Zurich’s

answer to London’s shopping streets such as Oxford Street,

Regent Street and Carnaby Street. Running between the main rail­

way station and Josefwiese, it offers some of the city’s absolute

shopping highlights. Unlike Bahnhofstrasse with its internationally

known and often expensive names, you can find genuine rarities

here at reasonable prices: fashion, objects and furniture from Swiss

designers, art from newcomers to the scene, but also one or two

exotic shops in which it’s easy to forget that you are still in the mid­

dle of Switzerland.

Rauchwölkchen tanzen vor den Scheinwerfern, das Eis schmilzt im

Glas auf dem Tisch, während vorne auf der Bühne Bass, Schlagzeug

und Saxofon mit ihrem Klang Bilder vor das innere Auge projizieren.

Man wähnt sich an einer Jam­Session in der Southside von Chicago,

ist je doch mitten im Westen von Zürich. Die vielen ansässigen Musik­

clubs locken immer wieder bekannte Namen aus dem In­ und Ausland

an. Von Jazz über Techno bis Rock bietet der Kreis 5 fast täglich

bzw. nächtlich Live­Konzerte.

Wohnen, wo Zürich auch Chicago ist

Live where Zurich is also Chicago. Swirling smoke dances in

front of the spotlights, the ice melts in the glass on the table, while on

the stage in front, the sounds of bass, drums and saxophone conjure

up dramatic pictures in the imagination. It may feel like a jam ses­

sion on Chicago’s South Side, but it’s actually the west of Zurich.

The many local music clubs regularly attract well­known names from

Switzerland and abroad. From jazz via techno to rock, District 5

offers live concerts almost every day and night.

Wer kennt sie nicht, die Klippenspringer von Acapulco. Doch hals­

brecherische Saltos, Schrauben und Auerbacher ins kühlende Was­

ser werden auch im Kreis 5 gesprungen. Nur dass die Springer hier

nicht Antonio, Jorge und Jesús heissen, sondern Benny, Jürg und

Christoph. Und man stürzt sich auch nicht vom La­Quebrada­Fel­

sen in den Pazifik, sondern von der neun Meter hohen Kornhaus­

brücke in die Limmat. Die Brücke liegt zwischen den beiden Fluss­

bädern Oberer und Unterer Letten. Nach dem Baden trifft man sich

dann im angesagten Restaurant Primitivo am Oberen Letten oder

im Juli am Unteren Letten zum Openair­Kino «Filmfluss».

Wohnen, wo Zürich auch Acapulco ist

Live where Zurich is also Acapulco. Who hasn’t seen the cliff

divers of Acapulco? Daredevil somersaults, turns and Auerbacher

splashdives into cool water are equally popular in District 5. Except

that the divers here are not called Antonio, Jorge and Jesús, but

Benny, Jürg and Christoph. And they don’t dive off the La Quebrada

cliffs into the Pacific, but from the nine­metre­high Kornhaus Bridge

into the Limmat. The bridge lies between the two river pools of

Oberer and Unterer Letten. After swimming, the divers meet in the

hip Restaurant Primitivo at Oberer Letten, or in July at Unterer

Letten to enjoy a Filmfluss open­air cinema show.

Wo in Zürich kann man sich original afrikanische Cornrows, Dread­

locks, Rastazöpfe oder Nubische Knoten ins Haar flechten lassen?

Oder sich Gerichte wie Impala Bredie, Chicken Maafée, Meali Pap

oder Umngqusho schmecken lassen? Natürlich im Kreis 5. Der multi­

kulturelle Stadtkreis bietet wie die drittgrösste Stadt Südafrikas eine

bunte Durchmischung der verschiedensten Kulturen. Sind es dort vor

allem Afrikaner, Buren, Engländer, Inder und Malaien, kann man hier

noch rund 160 weitere Nationen dazuzählen, die zwischen Haupt­

bahnhof und Escher­Wyss­Platz eine neue Heimat gefunden haben.

Und das, glücklicherweise, ohne ihre Wurzeln zu vergessen.

Wohnen, wo Zürich auch Kapstadt ist

Live where Zurich is also Cape Town. Where in Zurich can you

have original African Cornrows, Dreadlocks, Rasta plaits or Nubian

knots braided in your hair? Or taste dishes such as Impala Bredie,

Chicken Maafée, Meali Pap or Umngqusho? Naturally in District 5.

Just like South Africa’s third­largest city, this multicultural quarter

displays a colourful blend of the most diverse cultures. Whereas the

first counts above all Africans, Boers, British, Indians and Malays

among its population, another 160 or so nations have found a new home

here between the main railway station and Escher­Wyss­Platz.

Fortunately without forgetting their roots.
