PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Families,

Seeds of Hope

There is an overall sense of excitement and relief at being onsite, with the students all back in the swing of playing together and enjoying each others’ company face to face. Class teachers have focused on students re-connecting and adjusting to being back at school, creating opportunities for students to socialize whilst getting back into the routine of a regular school day. Students have done a fabulous job with this and are to be commended.

In the coming days we will be gathering some feedback from both students and families about the remote learning delivery at SSPP. I encourage parents to contribute to this opportunity.

There are a few important messages in this week’s Newsletter particularly about the drop off and pick up of students. Please pass this information on to all family members who may drive students to or from school.

Take care.

God bless.

Trish Vandekolk

NO PARKING REQUEST - LOWER STREET PARKING ON BEVERLEY STREET Parents of Year 3-6 students are asked to use the lower street parking on Beverley Street as a drop off and pick up zone only in the same way that the zone at the main entrance is used. This way our Year 3-6 parents can remain in their cars and not cause any undue congestion or congregating outside the school gates. Parents of Prep & Year 1/2 students are asked not to park in the lower street parking on Beverley Street. Parents of Years 3-6 can also use Leeds Street as a pick up area for their children coming out the Church Gate. Parents are reminded not to stand outside the school gates for any longer than is absolutely necessary to drop off and pick up your children. Staff will politely ask parents to move off promptly. HAMILTON CRESCENT PLEASE NOTE—HAMILTON CRESCENT IS A ONE WAY STREET BETWEEN THE TIMES OF 8AM—9.15AM AND 3.00PM—4.00PM Parents can not enter Hamilton Crescent from Beverley Street at this time. Please enter only from Leeds Street. SCHOOL & BUILDING MAINTNEANCE Work begins on Monday to trim and maintain a number of the larger trees on the school property. Parents are asked to be mindful of parking in Hamilton Crescent between 9:00am and 12:00pm on Monday if you are needing to come to the school. Parents and students may have noticed the absence of the shade sails over the Adventure Playground. Our sails sustained some storm damage during the last holiday period. In the coming weeks, we can expect the installation of brand new sails to the area.

How wonderful it was to welcome back our middle and senior students to onsite learning on Tuesday, made all the more special by the bright sunshine that put a smile on everyone’s face. This exciting moment was also captured on the nightly news of both Channel Nine and Ten. A great accolade for the enormous effort all members of our community have put into our remote learning experience—students, parents and staff. Vision shown here is from Tuesday’s

On Tuesday 14th July and Wednesday 15th July from 2:00pm—5:00pm, we will be conducting our Semester One Parent / Teacher Interviews. In next week’s newsletter will be the details of how to make your interview booking.

STAFF NEWS

Parents of Room 8 were informed last week that due to health reason and under our current pandemic situation, Mrs Helen Kalac is not able to return to Ss Peter & Paul’s School as planned for the start of Term 3. Helen has indicated that from medical advice, a return to work will be not possible this year.

Mrs Caitlin Burgess will continue in the position as Year 3/4 Teacher for the remainder of the 2020 school year. I thank Caitlin for accepting this responsibility.

I am sure you join me thinking of and praying for Helen at this time in the hope of a return to our community as soon as she is able, and also wish Caitlin all the best for the remainder of the year.

I thank all parents of our Year 3/4 class for their understanding and continued support of our school.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

“How long does it take the virus to die on my iPad?”

“Will it live on my table?”

Students at Carlton Gardens Primary School had no shortage of questions about the coronavirus on their first day back in the classroom in almost three months.

And in acknowledgement that these are not yet normal times, they had a nurse in class to answer them.

They've asked a lot about COVID-19. They seem to be pretty aware. Obviously they’ve been listening to their parents,” principal Tina McDougall said.

The nurses also gave each child a temperature check as they entered the school doors on Tuesday morning, along with a healthy dollop of hand sanitiser.

Ms McDougall said this was less out of concern one of them might be infected with COVID-19 than a desire to prevent the spread of the common cold.

"We've just got the kids back and we know when the kids have got a cold they spread it and then half the grade is at home again," she said.

Not all students were back in class on Tuesday.

"I’d say 95 per cent of our kids have returned but there are [parents] that have decided that they will home school them until further

notice, and that's parent choice," Ms McDougall said.

A handful of the school's parents are stranded overseas, having left Australia to visit family during the term break.

About 618,000 Victorian students were expected back in class for the first time on Tuesday, as those in years 3 to 10 joined their younger and older schoolmates, who returned to school two weeks ago.

At Ss Peter and Paul's, a Catholic primary school in Doncaster East with just 75 students, attendance was 100 per cent.

Many were taking their first opportunity in months to play with friends at the lunchtime break, principal Trish Vandekolk said.

”The children, they're well, they're happy and they're excited to be back at school and that's probably our greatest achievement," she said.

The school will this week begin to collect summative data on its students' progress during the remote learning period.

Add"We'll be using that as a measure of the impact of the remote learning experience," Ms Vandekolk said.

"I'm pretty confident that our children had a relatively positive experience, inasmuch as we had contact with our children every single day.

"Even if they were little squares on a screen."

The Andrews government launched a public survey on Tuesday about people's views on the remote learning experience.

Education Minister James Merlino said the government wanted to hear from everyone.

"We want to hear from our students: what did you like? What didn’t you like? We want to hear from parents and teachers, principals … what worked and didn't work?”

The survey was launched ahead of a summit of education leaders from the state, Catholic and independent school sectors in the first week of term three, on the lessons acquired from remote learning.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE SACRAMENTS 2020

At this time all Sacramental events; Family evenings and celebrations for First Holy Communion and Confirmation are postponed until suitable dates can be arranged when it is safe to do so. We will be advised by Mons. Tony Ireland as to a possible date for Confirmation later in the year and we await the lifting of restrictions for public gatherings in the church before a suitable date for First Communion can be made. We will inform families in the coming term whether the Sacrament of Reconciliation needs to be re-scheduled. In the meantime, class programs for Sacraments will continue to be delivered to ensure students are prepared to receive their sacraments when the time comes. SCHOOL FEES Thank you to families who have continued to make payments of school fees during these difficult times. We understand that for many this is challenging. Current statements for school fees will be issued to families at next week and will include details of an extension of the due date for final payment now being the last day of school—Wednesday 16th December. Families experiencing financial difficulties are asked to contact Trish and a confidential conversation can be held.

LEARNING AT SPPP

Our Learning during the last fortnight. At SSPP we strive to provide focused lessons and an education for our students that covers the Victorian Curriculum as well as meeting the needs of every single student. Here are some examples of the learning intentions for some of our curriculum areas. A learning intention lets the students know exactly what their learning for the lesson is. This gives the students an idea of success before they start. A simple analogy for us as adults is starting a new recipe without knowing what we are trying to bake. This, of course, doesn't make sense to us. After studying and gathering evidence for more than 20 years John Hattie has evidence based research that supports this process. Asking children how their day was or what it was they learnt is often too broad and in the past I have noticed my own children respond with ‘good, nothing, okay’. These responses do not really give me any indication about how they are feeling or what they actually learnt. Here are some examples of conversation starters about your child’s learning: Hey Johnny, tell me what you know about helping others just like Jesus did. Hey Joanie, Describe a two dimensional shape. What else do you know about shapes? Darling Johnny, can you let me know what you know about conjunctions? Darling Joanie, How are you part of the SSPP community?
