The rain and cold put a dampener on the annual SAC Walkathon. I was reminded of Pope Francis’ words, “A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just”. We certainly needed a little extra warmth last Friday. SAC students are educated to recognise injustice in the world and respond with passion in helping our neighbours. The funds we raise through the Walkathon make a big difference to the organisations supporting the homeless, refugees and asylum seekers and others in need in our community. Our JAM (Justice and Mercy) leaders have played an active role in identifying the Mercy Works we support. We hope that our students and their families will still choose to support Mercy Works by collecting funds, despite the rain!

This fortnight we have welcomed two young women from Timor Leste to the College. Paula and Corry have been speaking to classes from Years 7 to 12 about their homes, their families and their lives in Dili. Both students and staff have appreciated the work they have put into preparing presentations and facilitating discussions. I believe this is an excellent way for our students to gain insight into the challenges facing one of our nearest neighbours, as well as giving Paula and Corry the opportunity to experience life in Australia.

The senior Mock Trial team won their second round of the competition on Tuesday evening. I was sitting on the edge of my seat in Court 4 of the Samuel Way Building! It gave me a new appreciation for the complexity of the law and the pressure to think on your feet and articulate ideas with clarity. Many thanks to Mr Lou Pacella, Legal Studies teacher, who trained and supported the girls in preparation and on the night, and congratulations to Holly Saberton 11OZ, who showed confidence in her first Mock Trial. I know Holly appreciated the excellent support and teamwork provided by the Year 12 students on the team.

NAPLAN testing moved into the modern era this week with students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 being amongst the first in Australia to complete their NAPLAN tests online. Significant preparation was required in the lead-up to the online tests, which enabled all students to engage effectively using the platform provided. Our hope is that the feedback to students, teachers and families will be much quicker, making it possible to use the data to inform teaching and learning.A full house greeted Year 10 students last week for their final Semester 1 performances for Drama. Two plays filled with humour and action entertained the audience and showcased the many talents of each member of both Drama classes. The Year 11 Drama night was equally impressive, filled with horror, mystery and suspense. A large ensemble cast displayed outstanding acting skills, which augurs well for the productions of 2019.

The Year 11 Outdoor Education class also braved the elements on their trip to Deep Creek last week. These expeditions are often some of the most memorable moments for senior students, developing confidence and resilience and strengthening friendships.

The strong connections between students were also on display at the Year 11 and 12 Formal at the Hilton Ballroom last Friday. The girls were unrecognisable in their glamorous outfits and a wonderful evening was had by all. When we look back on all these events of the past fortnight, we are grateful the rich diversity of experiences that make up a St Aloysius College education.

‘LIVING THINGS DEPEND ON EACH OTHER AND THE ENVIRONMENT TO SURVIVE’

Students in Year 4 completed a Science Inquiry unit that investigated the statement ‘Living things depend on each other and the environment to survive’. After investigating plant life cycles and researching native Australian plants in Term 1, students designed and created a butterfly garden that has been planted in the Mitchell courtyard. We look forward to caring for this garden, nurturing the plants and encouraging native butterflies to find a home at St Aloysius College.

2018 DEBATING SEASON

Week 2 marked the commencement of the 2018 Debating season. Debating provides students with an opportunity to formulate arguments based on evidence, and articulate their ideas through public speaking in a safe and nurturing environment. The season began with a win from 4 of the 5 teams who competed in this round. The Year 6/7 division had the opportunity to present their ideas on whether or not students in Australian primary school students should cook and serve lunch to each other. In Year 8, the girls shared their thoughts and factual evidence on whether ‘how to vote’ cards should be banned. All participating teams impressed in their first round of the season, especially those girls who debated for the first time. It is sure to be an exciting and productive year for debating at SAC.

PE CENTRAL - YEAR 10 LACROSSE

Late in Term 1, our Year 10 PE classes began their second 8-week practical unit for the semester, Lacrosse. The girls are enjoying learning the challenging skills of Lacrosse, which is a new sport for most students. Having progressed to using a hard ball with protective gear in practice, we are now developing their understanding of the rules, tactics and strategy as we build towards a full game. Students have also been able to make connections between our practical lessons and theory this term, using examples from our Lacrosse lessons to learn about skill acquisition. More specifically, the students have been looking at how skills can be classified and taught, and the stages of skill learning. I look forward to watching the girls as they apply their skills in Lacrosse games over the coming weeks.

OUTDOOR ED CAMPAs the final assessment for the Outdoor Education course, the class of nine students, had to plan their three-day/two-night expedition. This included planning their own menus for the days and mapping suitable treks using the skills they had been taught throughout the semester. Each member of the team had to be totally self-sufficient whilst at the same time able to work collaboratively within the group. At various times every member of the team had the responsibility of navigation and leadership throughout the three days of the expedition.

AMAZING ACHIEVEMENTCongratulations to Emma who completed at the Victorian State Artistic Roller skating Championships in Dandenong and won the gold medal in Primary Free skating. This was an amazing achievement and she will now compete in the SA State Championships. Good luck Emma!

HOW DO I SAY THAT IN ENGLISH?

Each week, Zahra from Year 11 meets with members of the Year 11 and 12 SRC in order to practise her conversational English. Zahra, who arrived in Australia from Iran in December 2014 and speaks fluent Farsi, was extremely keen to improve her confidence and pronunciation when speaking English. The SRC students stepped in and do what girls do best: talk, laugh and exchange cultural stories with Zahra. Topics for these sessions range from family, friends, hobbies, sports, favourite movies and books, tips for oral presentations and public speaking. All this to further promote Zahra’s spoken English!

MOUNT GAMBIER ‘GENERATIONS IN JAZZ’ FESTIVALThe St Aloysius College Stage Band and Catch 22 Vocal Ensemble travelled to Mt Gambier over the weekend to participate in the prestigious “Generations in Jazz” festival. This event involves school jazz ensembles from all around the country (over 5,100 students) participating in workshops, competitions and public performances alongside some of Australia’s most renowned jazz musicians and some seriously impressive international guest artists. On arrival Friday night, we were treated to an Opening Gala performance by Grammy Award-winning vocalist Patti Austin. This was her only Australian performance, exclusive to Generations in Jazz. Also joining Patti Austin were German-based trombonist, vocalist and composer Shannon Barnett, Grammy-nominated sax, flute and multi-reed instrumentalist Jeff Clayton from America, the Generations in Jazz Festival Big Band and of course James Morrison. On Saturday, our jazz ensembles performed incredibly well, mixing it with the best and sharing their talents, whilst gaining a real sense of how jazz is played by the very best. The main venue, a massive marquee with seating for 6,000 was filled on Saturday night to hear the headline act ‘The Cat Empire’. This was an explosive performance, seeing thousands of students up on their feet. They were joined by Madrid’s star percussionist, Nasrine Rahmani, Shannon Barnett and James Morrison. Patti Austin also had a jam with this impressive band. Sunday’s program included instrumental workshops and a final concert. The girls arrived home late Sunday evening exhausted, but inspired. GIJ provides a valuable opportunity for young musicians to perform and learn, to share fellowship with their peers and to hear professionals perform. It was an absolute privilege to accompany this talented group of musicians and I would like to thank the girls for their hard work and dedication in preparation for this event. I would also like to thank Mr Roger Downton, Ms Chelsea Smart, Ms Nicole Wedding and Ms Amy Waters for their directorship, support and mentoring of the students.

Women in Mathematics Day

Students’ Reflections

On Thursday 10 May, we were fortunate enough to experience a day in the life of a Mathematical Science student at the University of Adelaide. We were presented with many opportunities to further fuel our interest in STEM through presentations from inspiring female mathematicians and students. Some of the activities we enjoyed throughout the day were: making dodecahedrons and designing fractals to expand our interest in mathematical art, and discovering the mathematics behind numeric randomness. We would like to thank the school and Adelaide University for allowing us this opportunity, which gave us insight into possible careers for women in the field of Mathematical Sciences. VOICE OF YOUTH CLARITY, CONFIDENCE AND PASSION

REPRESENTED BY RUBY

Last week, Year 8 student, Ruby represented St Aloysius College in the Rostrum Voice of Youth Heats. Ruby spoke with clarity, confidence and passion about how we should acknowledge all those people throughout history who fought so hard for the liberties and freedoms we enjoy today. Inspired by these idealists and reformers, Ruby encouraged her audience, to look to the past and learn from them, because not everyone enjoys the same freedom and liberties that we do. She acknowledged that we must be a voice for others, because there are still some hard-fought battles to be won.

LEARNING ABOUT BRUSHFIRES• Do you ever go on holiday in summer and worry your house

will burn down?• Do you have a bushfire safety plan?• How do you know when it is time to evacuate? These are just some of the questions the Year 5 students had for Ms Carolyn Lewis when she came to share her experiences of living in an area prone to bushfires. Ms Lewis who is a former teacher at SAC provided the students with valuable first-hand information to help them in their Inquiry focus on the impact bushfires have on the Australian environment. The students learnt how bushfires behave, how to prepare for the possibility of a bushfire and the devastating impact bushfires have on people, animals and the environment. Many thanks to Ms Lewis for taking the time to speak with the Year 5 students and Ms Villis for organising the visit.

STEM IN CHEM

Years 11 and 12 Chemistry students, and some lucky Years 8 and 9 Science classes, are regularly making use of the newly refurbished Chemistry Laboratory. With a bright new colour scheme, flexible class area and seating plan, sliding pin-boards and whiteboards for brainstorming, a new two-way fume cupboard, an extendable lab bench exhaust fan, all new fixtures and fittings in heat and chemically resistant lab benches, and deionised water on tap, safe practical investigations are easily undertaken.Following hot on the heels of a STEM visit to Flinders University, on the theme of surface films and nanotechnology, last term, Year 11 Chemistry students are currently using the Chemistry Lab facilities to investigate composition of hydrated salts, and trying out their own graphite circuitry, whilst Year 12 Chemists are constructing their own Voltaic cells (batteries), and carrying out some electrolysis.Thank you to all staff involved in the planning, building, refurbishment and restocking of the new Chemistry Laboratory, especially Steve Andrews, Alison Bullock, Jacqui Jury, Gunars Kargans, Matt Crotti, Carolyn Eaton and Betty Horsell.

Ms Sandra EustaceCHEMISTRY TEACHER

The trip to Flinders Uni for the STEM activity was well worth the travel time. We got to do so much hands-on science. Olivia Burgess 11ABThe demonstrator at Flinders managed to explain things at our level, even though he is a PhD student in Nanotechnology. It was really interesting to hear about his work. Adele Karpluk 11NOWe had so much fun! It was great to be able to touch the surfaces and compare. Rahila Rezai 11TC

HEALTHY EATING AT THE MARKET!

Year 2 students have been learning about healthy eating as part of the Health curriculum. They visited the Adelaide Central Market and purchased fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, crackers, sandwich meats and freshly baked bread. All three classes enjoyed a shared lunch made up of their delicious purchases!

JUSTICE AND MERCYOn Monday, five students accompanied Corry and Paula, our visitors from Timor Leste, to deliver baskets full of herbs and plants from our SAC herb garden to the Adelaide Day Centre. The girls filled big baskets with spinach leaves, basil, oregano, chives, different varieties of parsley and dill, which the JAM group planted in term one. The Adelaide Day Centre will use the herbs to cook soup for the homeless men of Adelaide during the cold winter. If you would like to help support the Adelaide Day Centre, please donate any warm clothing items, blankets or sleeping bags to the box in the St Aloysius front foyer.

Ms Clare Peterson STUDENT WELFARE SUPPORT OFFICIER

DONATIONS NEEDED!The cold weather is officially here! While for most of us that means getting out our favourite woolly socks and jumpers from last Winter, Adelaide’s homeless population needs our help.

Please donate any pre-loved sleeping bags, jumpers, jackets, socks, blankets, scarves and beanies to help support those sleeping rough and cold this coming winter. There is a box in the SAC front office for donations which will be sent to the Adelaide Day Centre.

Many thanks.
