PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - Dr Darren Egberts

It was certainly pleasing from an educational perspective to receive Tuesday’s news on what the return to onsite learning and teaching will look for Sacred Heart College. This article focuses on initial planning for the return of students (especially those completing Year 11 and 12 classes) after the extended Covid-19 school closure.

The Victorian Government’s timeline has students returning in two stages: 1. All Year 11 and 12 classes return on Tuesday 26 May. Please note that this will include any Year 9 or 10 students

who are undertaking a VCE or VET subject (including those studying VCE Industry and Enterprise). Special arrangements for these students will be detailed next week.

2. All Year 7 – 10 classes return on Tuesday 9 June.

The Sacred Heart College return to onsite learning and teaching is based on two fundamental principles: 1. That the health and wellbeing of students and staff in a Covid-19 world must be protected and supported wherever

possible 2. On returning to onsite learning, classes for all students must be as normal, authentic and routine as possible.

Managing these twin priorities requires significant planning as onsite learning and teaching will be quite different to what we were all used to in a pre-Covid 19 school.

The return to onsite learning (ROSL) at SHC is not a simple exercise. The challenge of Covid-19 infection will be ever present, at least until a vaccine is available. Therefore, a substantial number of routines, practices and assumptions will need to change ahead of students returning on Tuesday 26 May. We will endeavour to provide all necessary information to parents, students and families ahead of the two-stage return to onsite learning and hope to do this in packages over the next few days. It is very important that this information is read given the need to ensure a safe environment for all members of the Sacred Heart community.

Prayer For those who care for the sick

Father of mercies, we thank you for all who care for the sick. When they diagnose, give them patience.

When they protect the vulnerable, give them your protection. When they work to heal, give them strength. When they comfort, give them consolation.

When they are tired, give them rest. When they are discouraged, bring them your hope. May we welcome and respect them as we support

one another in this time of trial. Amen

The return to onsite learning requires the College to carefully manage the return of teachers and non-teaching staff with the need for social distancing particularly important for adults. Monday 25 May will provide the opportunity for all staff to return to school in a managed way and familiarise themselves with the changes implemented with offices, traffic flows, hygiene, etc. No student classes will operate. I am also conscious of the very heavy workload that remote learning and teaching has meant for students, staff and families. With a substantial amount of Term 2 to run, we have decided to not run any classes on Friday 22 May. Together with the following Monday, students and families will have four days break from screens, Zoom and associated challenges. The College’s office and other services will also be closed on Friday 22 May.

With the declaration from the Victorian Government that schools are safe for students and staff to return to, our emphasis will return to face-to-face teaching. If parents are uncomfortable or concerned about the safety of the school environment and choose to keep children at home, there will be no capacity for teachers to provide special work or remote learning for these students. These guidelines do not apply to students who have pre-existing or underlying health conditions that may mean they are particularly susceptible to Covid-19 infection. Please contact Ms Julie Mortimer, Deputy Principal – Student Wellbeing ([email protected]) if you have any questions on this.

Amongst the clearest message from government health authorities is the need for students and staff to stay at home if they exhibit any flu-like symptoms. The College will have clear protocols in place to send any students/staff home immediately if such symptoms are ignored or develop during the course of a day.

As will be the case in all schools and workplaces in coming months, strict protocols and procedures are being introduced with respect to cleaning and hygiene at Sacred Heart College. We have sourced significant quantities of hand sanitiser and will aim to have sufficient dispensers for rooms across the College. The College Wellbeing team is developing protocols for use by students and staff. Mercy Education has sourced some supplies of personal protection equipment (PPE) and we will have protocols in place for any staff who choose to wear PPE while at school. There will be additional protocols in place for certain staff such as the College Nurse and Front Reception. The cleaning regime across the College will increase significantly and have changes in focus. The Department of Education has already published guidelines on Covid-19 and I expect these will be updated in light of the return to onsite learning and teaching. All school buildings will be cleaned daily with emphasis on all flat surfaces, high traffic areas, seats, banisters etc.

Arrangements to provide supervision for students onsite will continue for the next few weeks including during the period before Years 7 – 10 students resume. A reminder that these supervision arrangements only provide students with the opportunity to access and complete remote schooling rather than extra face-to-face support. Access to these supervision arrangements needs to be arranged through the Principal’s Secretary, Mrs Jan Bower ([email protected]).

It is likely that Year 10 students attending school for VCE/VET subjects will remain onsite for the entire day. Details will follow about the arrangements for these students.

The College’s Uniform Shop will be open to support parents and families ahead of the return to onsite learning and teaching. A reminder that, on return, students will be expected to be correctly dressed in full College winter uniform.

Although this article includes a significant amount of detail regarding the return to onsite learning and teaching, we still have many issues to review and formalise. These include:

Pedestrian traffic around the College (one-way routes, dedicated entry/exits, possible choke points)

Seating arrangements inside classrooms

Canteen arrangements and lunch orders

Water fountains

Locker arrangements

Student arrangements for Recess and Lunchtime

Sanctions for students breaking social distancing protocols

Buses and movement to/from Kyneton High School

The relevant Heads of School and Year Level Leaders will be in contact via email with students ahead of the return to onsite learning and teaching.

The College’s VCE, VCAL and VET Coordinators, as well as individual subject teachers, will continue to liaise with students as new information is distributed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) regarding Covid-19 changes.

At the moment, all excursions, incursions, camps and most external activities remain banned by the State Government. We expect this to be the case for the foreseeable future but will continue to review arrangements for Terms 3 and 4 in light of any developments.

Yours in Mercy, Dr Darren Egberts Principal

We are looking forward to having the students return to school over the next couple of weeks. When students return, we will be checking to see if material taught has been fully understood by the students, and we will be covering everything that is better taught face-to-face. We are sure that the students will enjoy having practical subjects run their activities again.

Examinations – Years 7 - 11 Because Term Two face-to-face time will be limited, there will be no examinations for any Year levels at the end of Term Two. Instead, the emphasis will be on consolidation. If we maintain on-site schooling for Terms 3 and 4, the normal suite of exams will be conducted at the end of the year. Exceptions will be semester length subjects where, because of the adjustments that were made to courses in Semester One, we cannot examine exactly the same knowledge and skills in Semester Two. Core subjects will all undertake examinations as usual.

Examinations – Year 12 VCE We await confirmation of the VCE revised examination timeline. Students will be informed as soon as it becomes available and we will ensure that all families know what will be required. The October Trial exams will still take place in the second week of the holidays (unless school closures prevent this). More than ever these trials will provide students and their teachers with the information that is required to fine-tune revision prior to their final exams.

Reports Semester One reports will be completed as usual. Some of the Work Habits, however, have been altered to reflect remote-learning. These will be released on the last day of Term 2.

CURRICULUM MATTERS - Jodie Wattie, Head of Junior School and Paul Matthews, Head of Senior School

Semester Two Subject Changes Semester Two subject/elective changes for Years 9, 10 and 11 to open on Thursday 28 May and will close on Thursday 18 June. Semester Two commences on Monday 13 July. Student timetables will be uploaded to SIMON by the start of Term 3, Monday 13 July. To make a change, students will need to complete a Change of Unit/Subject Form (green - Year 10, pink - Year 11) obtained from outside Student Reception. Year 10 students wanting to obtain a form prior to their return on the 9 June please email Mr Matthews. Year 9 students need to obtain a form by emailing Mrs Wattie, Head of Junior School.

Senior School Students

Please note in order to enable the timetable and class numbers to be confirmed, and to meet the required VCE class attendance hours, no changes will be made after these dates. We ask that parents support us in this request. Forms will need to be signed by a parent/guardian, and Current Subject Teacher and a reason for the change given. Interviews will be held during lunchtime with Mr Matthews in his office (O208), to determine if the change is possible based on the subject/unit blocking. Students are required to book a lunchtime interview on the booking sheet located outside O208 (after June 9 for Year 10 students). If this change has a significant impact on future career plans, then it is essential that students organise a Career appointment prior to their interview to discuss options. This information and process is available to all students via Daily Messages.

Reminder of the Procedure for Student Absences in Remote Schooling

If students are sick and unable to engage in their lesson, parents must inform the following staff via email:

1. Year Level Leader

2. Class Teacher

There is no Student Absence Phone Line at Present.

Recently the two Year 9 Food Technology classes (approximately 50 students), joined together to make homemade pasta. This was part of their Isolation Portfolio Task, where they have the opportunity to create eight dishes of their choice. Each week they are given a topic and need to create a dish based on the ingredients they have at home, personal preference and skill level. Many students made it at the same time as the teacher, while some just observed and asked questions to make it later on. Students also found a pasta sauce recipe of their choice to top their pasta. I am happy to say there were many happy Year 9 families who enjoyed eating pasta for dinner that night! It was a fun opportunity to be able to enjoy cooking together, even though we are apart. One of the creative students, Georgia Harvey-Courts, even wrapped the pasta around a chopstick to make penne! Well done Georgia!

Junior Food Technology - Belinda Kime

Over the last week Year 7 and 8 Food Technology students have been learning about the design process. They were given a design brief where they had to create a pancake that would be fun and interesting for a toddler, and increase their fruit or vegetable intake. Students were given time to investigate pancake recipes, see what ingredients they had at home to decorate their pancake, and generate 3 different design ideas.

International Nurses’ Day took place on 12 May, to mark the birth of Florence Nightingale 200 years ago. It’s an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the amazing work of nursing staff across the world.

It could not be more timely that the World Health Organization has designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. The courageous work of nurses and other healthcare workers in the face of coronavirus honours the Year of the Nurse and Midwife and to the 200

th anniversary of Florence

Nightingale’s birth.

Mathspace - Follow Your Child’s Progress If you haven’t done so already, you are able to add your parent/guardian email address to your child’s Mathspace account, and you will get a weekly summary of how they are progressing. I would strongly encourage you to do this, as it is an easy way to keep abreast of your child's progress in mathematics at school. The instructions to do this are can be found here. (3 steps - your child logs in, click settings, then scroll down to ‘Add parent or Guardian’) If you have any difficulty please contact me via email at [email protected]

Reminder: Maths Tutorials Via Zoom! The Maths Department is trialling Maths tutorials via Zoom! These will run on Wednesdays between 3:40pm and 5:00pm. We are posting the links in a Google Class-room each week (depending on the number of students who come, and the staff who are available, we may run more than one meeting concurrently). We will have staff from the junior and senior school available to answer questions. If students have questions they are getting stuck on, or if they would like a little bit more assistance, they are welcome to join the classroom. The Google Classroom code to use is w6xu5nn If you would like to ask any questions, please contact me via: [email protected]

Last Thursday I ran a cooking class for the Year 10 Japanese students. Harrison Gatt and Lani Gallagher sent through a photo of the final product. Both said “Nikujyaga wa oishikatta desu” – the niku jyaga was delicious.

Recipe: Ingredients:

1. Potatoes – 6 large

2. Carrot – 1

3. Thinly sliced beef or pork (minced meat works too) – 400g 4. Brown onion – 1 Wet Ingredients:

5. Mirin – 4 tablespoons

6. Soy sauce – 4 tablespoons

7. Sugar (or Honey) – 4 tablespoons

8. Rice cooking wine – 4 tablespoons 9. 400ml water + 1 table spoon stock powder (any stock) Method:

1. Mix wet ingredients in a separate bowl

2. Chop vegetables into a large dice

3. Thinly slice the onion

4. Thinly slice the meat (if relevant)

5. Brown the meat in a large saucepan on high heat

6. Add onions, potatoes and carrots to saucepan, stir for a few minutes

7. Reduce heat to medium high

8. Add wet ingredients to sauce pan

9. Cut tin foil to the shape of the saucepan and place tin foil in saucepan so it is just touching the top of the vegetables

10. Cook/boil for 10 minutes

11. At the 10 minute mark, lift foil and stir.

12. Return foil and boil for another 10 minutes, stirring every now and then

13. Continue boiling the mixture until the sauce has evaporated

14. Turn off stove top, but leave tin foil covering the vegetables for an additional 10 minutes – this is essential and helps

the flavour soak into the meat and vegetables

Outdoor Environmental Studies - Kirsty Barnes

Whilst Outdoor Environmental Studies students are housebound and missing their camp and excursion experiences, they have been trying to make the most of their own backyards. Students in Unit 1 have made videos on first aid, demonstrating their ability to follow DRSABCD, and enjoyed making their perfect Instagram shot whilst studying media use in outdoor environments. Unit 3 students enjoyed a more creative practical activity of developing an informative video on the impact of climate change and ways to reduce CO2 emissions.

Whilst this week should have been camp week for the Unit 1 students we made the most of it on Zoom with our Virtual Zoom Mountain Bike Ride, wearing our helmets to class, longing for the day we can get back out there together.

Another creative week in isolation for our Arts students. Remember we are regularly updating our website so you can see a huge variety of work that the students are doing. The link is https://sites.google.com/a/shckyneton.catholic.edu.au/arts/student-work If you are doing anything amazingly creative at home, we would love to see it. Email [email protected] or [email protected] Some tips for photographing artwork

Use the sun instead of artificial lighting

Make sure there are no shadows on your page (try and use diffused light where you can)

Keep your artwork flat and your camera/phone is parallel to your artwork

Take the photo from a little way away, and then crop to make sure there is no distortion of your artwork. The best app for photographing your drawings is “Office Lens” Here is some work that has been going on! Year 8 Drama have been practising their facial expressions and they look a little like the Brady Bunch!

Year 7s and 8s are looking at Indigenous Art with Ms Sullivan. Here are two beautiful examples of work. One by Thomas Rutledge in Year 7 and the other by Maddie Comte in Year 8
