How to help your children

successfully face challenges

Q&A with Building Resiliencecreator Associate Professor HelenCahill, Deputy Director YouthResearch Centre, Graduate Schoolof Education, University of

Melbourne

Why is it important to be

resilient?

It’s important to be resilient so thatyou can build a capacity to cope andto persist when faced withchallenge. Persistence is the key tolearning. If children don’tunderstand something and quicklygive up, they will learn lesseffectively, so persistence and

resilience are key.

What can parents do at home to

help children be resilient?

The number one thing is to be a role

model, and then to share with theirchildren the techniques they use tohelp them face a challenge. Parentscan talk to their children abouttechniques they use to cheerthemselves up or to calm down. Forexample, it can be something assimple as helping a child to make a plan when they are feelingoverwhelmed. Or it can be talkingwith them about counting to 10when they are angry with their

siblings. What does a resilient student look

like in primary school?

A student who is able to identifywhen they can successfully problem-

solve and when they can successfullyidentify the need to seek help. A childin the playground may be disagreeingwith a friend about what to playtogether and they problem-solve by

deciding to take turns playingdifferent games. Help-seeking isabout asking a teacher, parent or anolder child to assist them when they

are unsure.

If I'm a parent and I don't think

my child copes very well with

challenges and change, what should

I do?

You can provide positive experiencesfor your child, something as easy asinvolving them in conversations

between you and your friends and

Children’s Challenges

neighbours, or encouraging them to participate in group activities such assport to build connectedness withsociety. It’s important to remindchildren of times they succeeded atsomething. For example, a time theyused courage or were patient. Thisencourages a child to build on prior,

similar successes.

What is the school's role in

building resilience among

children?

The school has a number of key rolesto play, and the first is about providing a positive environmentwhere students feel safe. Then thereis the more explicit curriculum, where teachers teach problem-

solving, communication, help-

seeking skills and emotional literacy. Then there is the teacher’s role inmodelling resilience and problem

solving skills themselves.

What is the best advice anyone evergave you about being resilient?

Rather than being explicitly stated, itwas more role modelled. In myfamily, it was very much ‘have a goof it.’ That was a very strong family

message.

It’s great to be back in our bright

fresh Art room after the renovations!

Lorraine and I sincerely thank

Hayley T, Zali B, Zoe K, Mitchel H,

Mason H & Daylan H for their

dedicated effort, their muscle power

& their willingness to work hard for

their school – even through rain, to

move all the furniture and supplies

from the POD back to the Art &

Music rooms. We were all exhausted

by the end of the day, but we couldn’t

have done it without them!

Some of the wonderful hand art our

artistic grade 5/6 children created in

Visual Art this week. Well done

everyone, the quality of your art is

inspiring.
