Newsletter: April 2017 Next Meeting: Tuesday, April 25, 6:30pm, Westerville Public Library. Room change: due to construction, the April meeting will be held in the Youth Activity Center. To reach the Youth Activity Center, enter the lobby of the library, and turn right as you pass the check-out desk. You will enter a hall, passing the self-serve reservation shelf on your right and the video section on your left. You will then come to a red wall with cutouts. As soon as you come to the red wall, the Youth Activity Center will be on your left. The doors to the center have fire trucks on them. Presentation for upcoming meeting: Bess Alexander will be the presenter for the April meeting, and she plans on giving a watercolor demonstration. Bess is an award winning local and nationally recognized watercolor artist. She has painted in watercolor for over 30 years, traveling through the Midwest states to participate in art festivals and exhibits. Her works have been in the Transparent Watercolor Society of America Show, OWS, COWS and many other shows. Bess has been an active member in the juried Ohio Watercolor Society, an officer in the juried Central Ohio Watercolor Society, and a member of the Bexley Art League. Bess teaches in her studio, teaches classes and workshops, and juries art shows. Bess has been an artist for most of her adult life. Art has always been a journey for Bess. For years, her work had been in traditional and mostly transparent watercolor. In her search for ways to improve her work and express herself in a new way, she experimented with mixed medium, collage, and abstract art. This opened a new road for Bess. Every new painting is a new discovery, which have kept her traveling on a magical road. It has been fun, challenging, and frustrating at the same time. Past Meeting: Judy Anderson was our guest presenter for the March meeting. She provided critiques of WAL member art with her usual blend of humor, a keen eye, and constructive advice. She is shown below in the process of critiquing several works.

Arts Alley/Fourth Friday Please see below from John Cameron regarding the Fourth Friday Arts Alley, especially the location change. If you have questions or would like to participate this month, please contact him as soon as possible at [email protected] or via his cell, 614-282-1184

• The new location is Haywood Alley, between Main St. on the north and College Ave. on the south. (NOTE: Haywood Alley is closed for 4th Friday, so artists can drive up to the exhibit area to unload, but no through traffic is allowed during 4th Friday, which is really nice for us)

• We'll be using two adjacent lots/parking areas on the east side of the alley. The businesses that own these areas are the recently purchased new location (house) of the Episcopalian Church, facing College Ave., 30 E. College Ave., and Westerville Automotive, facing Main St., at 31 E. Main.

• There will be convenient, nearby parking available for Arts Alley artists behind (to the east of) Westerville Automotive

• Artists can drive up to the Arts Alley area, unload their stuff, and park behind the auto shop • Musical groups will also join us at this new site, to help draw visitors to Arts Alley

Please, please, please let me know as soon as possible if you plan to show your work next Friday. I'd love to see all of you at Arts Alley again. If you have artist friends that may not be members of Arts Alley, it's fine to invite them as well- just let me know ahead of time, so I can plan for the number of panels and tables we'll need.

The meeting adjourned at 7:55 pm.

WAL show at Java Central/Reception The WAL show at Java Central will be finishing May 6th. The pictures below were taken at the artist's reception on March 29.

Wounded Warrior Plein Air Painting Opportunity The post below is from the Central Ohio Plein Air Facebook page. Member Shawn Augustson is organizing a plein air painting session this summer for Wounded Warriors. The post thread mentions that he is also looking at local sites. If interested, please indicate it on the April meeting sign-in sheet or you can contact Shawn directly.

I have an opportunity for anyone who is interested. I hope I can get some volunteers. I am a member of Wounded Warrior Project. I am planning to take a group of wounded warriors out on a hike and teach them to paint en plain air. I know from my own struggles with PTSD, Anxiety and Major Depressive Disorder from combat in Iraq how therapeutic art has been for me. I am now in a better place to be able to share with others.

I am in talks with WWP on them purchasing all the materials for each warrior to be able to participate. They would like to send 20 of them to this event. So the more help I can get the better it will be for the warrior. It would be really awesome if I could get a mentor for each warrior so they can paint side by side each other.

The time frame we are looking at is June/July. My first thought was to go to Hocking Hills and set up in a place to paint. If you have other locations around Columbus that you feel would be good, please let me know. If you can help me with this by volunteering to go and instruct/mentor some warriors please respond with your name here. I will put together a list and keep you posted on everything. Most of the warriors will have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Some may have lost limbs, but would be capable of going on a hike.

If you have questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected] Thank you for taking time to read this and considering volunteering :)
