It has been a long winter here in Sublette County. The weather has started to warm up and the snow is starting to melt. I can’t help but get a little spring fever. Along with spring comes an ever increasing list of 4-H activities. Some of these activities include

purchasing livestock projects, shooting sports meetings, horse activities, junior leader activities and more.

It has been a rewarding experience visiting some of your club meetings this past month. Our youth and leaders are very talented and are a great representation of our com-munity. If there is anything that our office can do to help with your meetings or projects please do not hesitate to call.

This month will be a great opportunity to build life skills. We will be hosting the county presentation day at the town hall in Marbleton. Giving presentations in a more for-mal setting helps youth build their confidence and increases their ability to speak in front of a group. This is a great skill that can be used for job interviews and also helps youth prepare to become leaders. If you need help preparing for a presentation please call the office.

Spring is also the time that swine, sheep and goat projects get started. The first month and especially the first week you get your project home is the most critical time of the year. Make sure you eliminate stress as much as possible during this critical time. It is extremely important to keep temperatures at least 60 degrees for little pigs. Make sure you have plenty of fresh clean water, bedding and a high quality feed available. I look forward to meeting each of you as we get busy this spring and summer.

Good luck and see you soon.

Business Appreciation Day is perhaps the most important community service we do each year. This is where our program delivers homemade cookies to our local businesses to thank them for the thousands of dollars they provide to support the 4-H program and our community in various ways all year. If everyone participates, it really takes very little time, is fun and provides much needed appreciation to our community. Livestock members, if you are planning to sell a market animal through our livestock sale, then you should be planning to participate and remember that while you are delivering cookies to businesses that you are also making connections with potential buyers.

Please bring at least one dozen cookies to the following locations between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.We need volunteers to help package and DELIVER cookies to businesses before they close as well!

If you are able to help let us know!

We “learn by doing”. Two out of ten people remember what they hear, but seven out of ten people remember what they see and hear!

Have you ever shown a friend how to tie a knot, take a picture, or set a table? If you did, you gave a presentation. Easy, wasn’t it?

How did you do it? While you were using your hands to show your friend how to do something, you were also telling her or him how to do it. It was easy for you because you knew how.

Giving a presentation will help you to think on your feet and learn to speak before a group. You will have fun showing others how to do something. Check our website for a help sheet.

CHOOSING A TOPICa) something you have learned to do in 4-H Club workb) something you can do well, something you like to do, and

something that you can show others how to do in a few minutes

c) something you think others would like to know how to dod) an interesting title for your presentation.

• Limit your presentation to one process, or main idea, as much as possible.

• Learn all the facts you can about the subject chosen; do your research.

• Be sure to dress appropriately for what you are presenting• Be sure to use safe and recommended procedures.• Know yourself—mannerisms you have that could interfere.

PLANNING Introduction—Body—Summary

INTRODUCTION• Greet your audience. Someone else should introduce you.• Have a catchy title, create interest.• Tell what you are going to demonstrate and why they should want

to learn about your topic.• Tell how you became interested in your topic.

BODY OF PRESENTATION—In planning the presentation:• List the steps to be shown in the order in which you will show them

and decide how you are going to do each step. Use your time efficiently.

• List the supplies that you need for your presentation. Plan an arrangement for their efficient use. Example: trays

• Decide what you are going to say to your audience as you do each step.

• If you have visuals, use them appropriately. Possibly use a mirror.• Be sure your audience can clearly see what you are doing.• Look at your audience and stand straight as you talk to them. Get

their attention by being friendly and by being enthusiastic about your topic.

• Speak clearly and be sure everyone can hear you.

SUMMARY• Show the results of your presentation to the audience.• Restate or briefly repeat the main points.• Give sources of information, if you have not given them in the

presentation.• Give the audience ample opportunity to ask questions, repeat

questions before answering them.• Give out materials you would like the group to have. Possibly

directions, recipes, or samples

GIVING YOUR PRESENTATIONPractice the presentation. Keep in mind the following points:• Look at your audience and stand straight as you talk to them. Get

their attention by being friendly and by being enthusiastic about your topic.

• Speak clearly and be sure everyone can hear you.• Be neat and dress properly for the job you are going to do.• Arrange the work area so the audience can see what you are

doing at all times.• If you use models or charts, be sure everyone in the audience can

see and read them. Use creativity in phrases and use color.• Avoid unnatural long pauses. Avoid talking over noisy equipment.

Watch time limits.• Power point presentations should be rehearsed well enough to be

able to work without the media presentation if equipment doesn’t work. Speak to the audience not the screen. Be sure that slides can be easily read from a distance.

• Show the finished product to your audience.• Smile and be yourself. It is more important how you feel about

yourself and how you did than the color of ribbon you receive.

Character CountsWhat is respect?

Respect is very important in our relationships with others. When we respect others, we treat them with consideration and courtesy both verbally and physically. Respect for others should always be demonstrated and characterizes how we live our lives. It is a very important quality that will enable you to relate to and work well with others. Follow the Golden Rule; treat others the way that you would want them to treat you. Good manners matter and respect is demonstrated when consideration and kindness is shown to others. Respect is very important to a person of character.

Treat other people the way you want to be treated.• Tell the truth

• Be courteous and polite.

• Listen to what other people have to say.

• Don’t insult people, or make fun of them, or call them names.

• Don’t bully or pick on others.

• Don’t judge people before you get to know them.

Like this activity? Find more like it in the “Good Ideas Book” at your local Extension Office

RESPECT

“Show respect even topeople who don’t deserveit; not as a reflection oftheir character, but as a

reflection of yours.”—Dave Willis

Check for Respect 4-HThe laughs gained with playing this game with your club can add some

fun and give your club members the judgment to understand that the humor can be funny to listen to, but not funny if it is acted out. Some examples include:

You feel a sneeze coming, so you

a) look for someone to sneeze on

b) cover your mouth and nose with your hands

c) turn your head away from people and let the sneeze out as loudly as possible.

Company is over. And you notice that after the meal, your mom has a big piece of lettuce on her tooth. You

a) point at it and start laughing as loud as you can,

b) ask if anyone can tell which of your mom’s teeth is not like the other,

c) quietly whisper in your mom’s ear that she should check her teeth in the bathroom.

Once your 4-Her’s understand the idea behind making up scenarios for the game, they will want to make up some of their own, too.

Now, when club members treat each other or possessions with respect, remember to say, “Check for respect.”

Clover Connection

Head think before you say something or before you act.

Heart treat others the way you would want to be treated.

Hands manners matter.. use them.

Health be respectful of your body and take care of yourself.
