Barham High School Diligence & Integrity

Principal’s message Reflecting back on the first semester for 2018, I find it

hard to believe we have been able to fit in the amount

and variety of academic opportunities for our students

at Barham High School. Thank you to all of the staff at

Barham High School for their hard work and dedication

to furthering the education of our wonderful students.

Thank you also to our students who have embraced the

educational opportunities and applied themselves to

their studies.

Activities and Events Activities and events held so far this year include:

Elections for school leaders

Welcome BBQs for parents and families of new

students to BHS

Information BBQ for prospective families

Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country

carnivals; local, regional and state

representation

Assessment information evenings for senior

students

Parent / Teacher interviews

Multiple sporting events including basketball,

tennis, lawn bowls, AFL, cricket, netball

Excursions to a variety of locations including the

South Coast, Melbourne, Bendigo, Swan Hill

Tertiary tours

Wellbeing visits and presentations from

organisations such as Headspace and Vinnies

Reconnect

River Detectives, YES and YEP programs

Dance festivals, debating, author visits and Rock

Camp.

Just to name a few! It looks as though the second

semester will be just as busy. Obviously, none of these

would be possible without the dedication and

forbearance of our staff who are always willing to “go

the extra mile” for the benefit of our students.

Upcoming HSC Exams A gentle reminder to our senior students to use their

time wisely over the break, there is not much time until

the HSC and every moment counts. Remember, you are

not only competing against students at Barham High

School but every high school student across the state.

Remember to balance study time with personal time –

recharge your batteries now to power you through the

remainder of the year.

Congratulations It seems that hardly a newsletter goes by without

congratulating someone on their fantastic achievement.

Congratulations to Tatum Boyd in her selection for

representation in state tennis, our debating team for

their stunning victory over Hay War Memorial High

School and to Kelan Roy for securing an apprenticeship

with Penglase Auto Panels.

School Holidays I would like to take the opportunity to wish our entire

school community a safe and relaxing midyear break

and I very much look forward to welcoming our

students back to school on Tuesday 24th July.

Deputy Principal’s message

Year 11, 2019 Subject Selection The subject selection process for Year 10 students

moving into Year 11 in 2019 is under way. Students

have been gathering information regarding tertiary and

non-tertiary options leading into the Subject Selection

Information evening, which will take place in week

three of next term on Monday 6th August starting at 6

pm.

Merit Assembly This Thursday, 5th July, is our Semester One Merit

assembly. It starts at 10:15 am in the cluBarham

auditorium and all family and friends are invited for this

important ceremony.

Rewards Excursion On Friday 6th of July, eligible students have been invited

to attend the Rewards Excursion. This semester the

students are going to ‘The Zone’ in Bendigo and will

have access to all their facilities including go-karting,

laser tag and roller blading. For students not wishing to

go on the Rewards Excursion and those students

ineligible for the rewards excursion, a normal program

of work will take place at school and attendance is

expected. It is not an early start to the holidays despite

what they may have told you.

Student Success There are some recent great outcomes for individual

students and teams. Tatum Boyd is representing

Riverina at the upcoming CHS State Tennis

Championships, Kelan Roy has accepted an

apprenticeship with Penglase Auto Panels in Koondrook

and the Stage 5 Debating team have moved a step

closer to representing Riverina by their victory over Hay

War Memorial high School.

Happy Holidays! It has been a hectic term and I wish all staff and

students a relaxing break and hope they take the time

to recharge their batteries before Term 3 resumes

for staff on Monday 23rd of August and for

students on Tuesday 24th August.

GIRLS AFL

Our Under 15s Girls AFL team enjoyed an

afternoon of RnR after taking on four

teams in Week 7. Congratulations go to

all the girls on their effort and

determination in training. It is evident

that their skills have markedly improved

this season. We look forward to seeing

you all kicking goals again next year.

Debating Report

Debating

Congratulations to our Stage 4 Debating Team on their

first round win against Finley High School. Teesha,

Mason, Ella and Lizzie did a fantastic job arguing that

NAPLAN should not be banned. Special mention to

Hannah for taking on the role of Chairperson and to

Abbey Hird for adjudicating. We are looking forward to

our next battle against Hay in Term 3.

Intermediate Debating Team Wins Zone!

Last week our Year 9/10 debating team won the Zone

Premier’s Debating Competition by beating Hay War

Memorial High in a video conference tussle over the

topic”: that voting should be voluntary.” Our team, Ellie

Disher, Hollie Guerra, Abbey Free and Tatum Boyd took

the Affirmative position and the adjudicator from

Sydney was very complimentary in his summing up of

their arguments. They remain undefeated this year to

date with Finley and Deniliquin High, also eliminated

from the competition. Now they will move on to

contest for the Riverina Region and our hopes travel

with them. Congratulations, girls.

English Extension 2 Author Interview

Last Friday our two JSC English Extension 2 students,

Emma Carter and Erin McConnell, joined a student

panel from Moama Anglican Grammar, Deniliquin High

School and Echuca College to interview Fleur Ferris at

the launch of her new novel, Found. Fleur has kindly

offered to give our girls some advice about their HSC

Major Works this year, for which they are very grateful.

Copies of this exciting new novel, which is set in

Deniliquin, are in the Library.
