Old Bike Ride 14: Hosted and led by Bob Ohman

Bob O leads OBR 14

Well I started my day checking the weather report which predicted tem-

peratures in the 40’s and a 90% chance of rain in the mountains. I was

already up and wanting to ride so I figured I’d at least head to Golden for

the gathering in Foss Drug’s parking lot. As usual there was a nice collec-

tion of old bikes to look at and old bikers to visit with. I was still not sure I

was up to a cold, wet ride so I talked to a few of the guys. Some were

planning to make the ride, others were planning on a short version. Bob

Ohman shared words of wisdom “If you listen to the weather reports

you’ll never get out and ride.” Jack Abeyta had this to say, “We’re real

bikers, dude, we ride through anything.” Still undecided, but feeling the

peer pressure, I figured I’d at least start the ride and I could turn around if

the weather sucks. Long story short, the weather held up nicely and I rode

the route Bob laid out for us. As usual the ride was great. About 32 bikes

made the ride.

Motorcycle Stuff on the web:

Want to know how any type of engine works? http://www.animatedengines.com British bikes and babes video clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEbUVL8XnHs Two Wheel Classics video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIzCqihBTYs

I received these 2 pictures from Michael Wilson and was curious about a business that was classy enough to have a Norton in the window so I emailed Mark Reynolds to ask about his business. Here’s his reply:

After 11 years in Englewood, we just relocated to downtown Denver. We've expanded our lifestyle offerings to include vin-tage motorcycles. We already had been selling vintage English guns and fly fishing tackle. We specialize in select 1950-1970 British and European production bikes as well as period custom café racers. We will have 5-7 at a time vintage bikes in that peri-od. Right now we have the following:

1968 Norton Commando Fastback (first year production)

1968 Triumph Bonneville

1970 Triumph Trophy 500 Scrambler

Custom Dresda Triton Café Racer based on a '62 Triumph T-120 engine built for the Grand Reopening of the Ace Café in London

1962 Moto Morini Corsaro 125cc street/racer

We typically will have either very high condition or restored bikes. All of the bikes are for sale as soon as we get our state license and we will replace as sold with other bikes.

Much of our square footage is for apparel and we sell a lot of old line companies. On the motorcycle side, we have the Schott Leather jackets, Barbour International, and Belstaff Puro Mo-to. We also have a couple of motorcycle related company's apparel in Deus Ex Machina who makes custom bikes, and Iron and Resin. I also have a fair amount of vintage motorcy-cle apparel mostly from England. We haven't quite figured out how we are going to merchandise it inside the store but we have jackets, pants, boots, etc. from companies like: Lew-is, Belstaff, Kett, Goldtop, Wolf, Mascot, Schott, etc.

Thanks, Mark Reynolds

A Happy Customer, Dale Watson

I want to thank the Colorado Norton club (Jim Fisher) for the referral for Cycle Works @ Rally auto body. I’m building a Bobber from a wrecked 1974 Bonneville an needed to have the hard tail welded to the frame. I removed all the unusable rear section and had Tony and his crew straighten the bent frame and weld on the hard tail. They did a great job and it was less than a 3 week turn around. I will definitely use them for future projects. Thanks again, Dale

Happily Married Badass Biker Bob wakes up at home with a huge hangover. He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he see is a couple of aspirins and a glass of water on the side ta-ble. He sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. Bob looks around the room and sees that it is all in perfect order, spotless, clean. So is the rest of the house. He takes the aspirins and notices a note on the table: “Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to go shopping. Love You.” So he goes to the kitchen, and sure enough there is a hot breakfast and the morning news-paper. His son is also at the table eating. Bob asks, “Son, what happened last night?” His son says, “Well you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and delirious, broke some furniture, puked in the hallway, and gave yourself a black eye when you stumbled into the door.” Confused, Badass Bob asks, “So, why is everything in order and so clean and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?” His son replies, “Oh, that! Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you said, ’Woman, leave me alone, I’m married!’”

Big Tent BBQ hosted by Eric Bergman and Susie Saarinen

Our next official event is Sunday, June 5th, the open house BBQ at my house in Golden (1900 19th St.). This event is one of our recruiting tools, as well as an opportunity to mix with the fine fellows from some of the other vintage motorcycle groups around the front range, including the BMAC, the AMCA, and the Phantom Canyon Rid-ers. Non-members (of Norton Colorado) are very welcome at this event, especially those who are interested in vintage motorcycles, but we do ask them to make a donation of $10 a person to help cover the costs of food and drink that the club subsidizes. We like kids just fine, but we don’t consider them “persons” for this purpose. You can also point out to non-members that anyone who joins the club at the BBQ will save half their dues right then and there. As usual we will start at 1pm and go until everyone gets tired and leaves. Also as usual, we will provide a lot of food and we’ll seed the coolers with some water, soft drinks and beer and wine (with a special donation jar for beer and wine), but if you are seriously thirsty you should plan to bring some extra liquids, or make a beer run after you get here. We used to worry about mixing beer and motorcycles, but as the years have gone by I have noted that most of you have become weenies on that score. If you do see someone at the BBQ who is overdoing it, please let me know and we’ll make the necessary arrangements to get them home safely. Smoking is permitted outdoors. I have decided to change the tradition of having Nortons parked in front of the porch on the east side of the house. This year, let’s park all bikes out in the driveway and on the concrete pad (new this year) on the west side. That’s where everyone seems to congregate anyway. You are welcome to enjoy the coolness and comforts (and relative peace and quiet) of the porch, and the dining room and living room of course. Another significant change is that Susie will not be there. She is making good progress in the recovery from her accident a month ago but she is still several weeks, at least, from coming home. In consequence I am asking for more help than usual in putting this event on. The main areas that I would like some help with include: 1) Food supply: side dishes, salad, some sweets, etc. 2) Kitchen help: handing out plates and implements of ingestion, dishing it out, cleaning pots, bowls, and utensils, as needed. 3) Garbage: checking the various garbage receptacles, changing bags when full. 4) Parking Patrol: Keeping people from parking cars in the main driveway across the property, where the motorcy-cles are gathered. Parking cars on the semi-circle driveway on 19th St is fine, and on the side streets 5) Coolers: keep coolers iced up, arrange a run to the store if more liquids are needed. 6) Set up and take down. Need a few people who can arrive by noon, and then a few at the end to help take down and pack up. I am not the type to have sign-up sheets and rigid task assignments, but I’d like to hear from those of you who are specifically inclined to help in one or more of these areas. It would be very helpful if some extra coolers would turn up for this, and also a couple more EZ-ups (I have one). It is not unknown to have a thunderstorm in the afternoon this time of year, and the shade is often very wel-come. Cheers, Eric

Riverside Ride Information I just want to remind all of you about the Riverside Ride 2016. It is June 25th and 26th this year. See below for details on how you can register by June 14th. Last year, we had 43 signups. RIVERSIDE RIDE DETAILS Unless there is road construction that requires a route change, we will have the following plans: We depart at 9:30 am Saturday June 25th from JJ's Corner Store (4015 S. Taft Hill Rd. at Harmony Rd., Fort Collins), head up to Estes Park, down to Nederland along Peak to Peak Highway. From there we go past Idaho Springs to have lunch in Empire and then over Berthoud Pass, down into Granby, Rand and on to Walden. We finish up the day in Riverside, Wyoming for dinner and lodging. Sunday morning we cross the beautiful Snowy Range and head into Laramie. For those who want a longer, scenic route, we loop back to Walden and come down Poudre Canyon into Fort Collins. There is a shorter route that goes down Highway 287 where folks can head up to Red Feather Lakes and/or just go straight into Fort Collins where we will again have a post-ride gathering at a destination yet to be confirmed. The total ride distance is approxi-mately 600 miles for the longest route option. Riders are strongly encouraged to ride your old motorcycle as this is the heritage of the Riverside Ride. You have two months to get your old bike into ride-ready shape! We will again have a chase vehicle to accommodate break-downs. RIVERSIDE RESERVATIONS For your reservation to be on the 26th Annual Riverside Ride, please email Jon Erb at [email protected] as soon as possible so that sufficient lodging is secured. Your payment for this Ride must be received by Brad Willert no later than June 14th. The fee this year is again $40 per person. If you are riding two-up or have a guest meet you in Riverside...the same fee applies. The fee covers lodging and the expenses of having a chase vehicle in case anyone breaks down. Meals are on your own. Riders that elect to find their own lodging are to pay $15 to help cover the chase vehicle expense. Again, send your check payable to: Phantom Canyon Chapter AMCA by June 14th! Mail to: Brad Willert, PCC Treasurer 1104 Chiron St. Lafayette, Co. 80026-1422 RIVERSIDE RIDE T-SHIRTS Al Slarks has again come up with a great Ride shirt design! It will be a long-sleeved, black t-shirt with our Riverside Ride logo. Once the design is finished, I'll email it out. Western Slope Riders

Many Norton Colorado members live in the western part of the state, and finally have noticed that it’s I inconvenient to ride 500 miles for High Tea on the Front Range. Said members have formed a loose

confederation known as the Western Slope Riders, and are having their own High Tea and other fun times.

All Norton Colorado members are welcome at these Western Slope events, so if you city kids want to find out what the shoe feels like on the other foot, plan to ride out and join the Western Slope contingent.
