Principal’s message
Welcome back! Welcome back to everyone for Semester 2 to Barham
High School! I am hoping that you had an enjoyable and
relaxing break as the staff have planned some terrific
programs for the coming term.
It was great to hear the students’ voices coming through
the gates on Tuesday and the excitement and
enthusiasm of catching up with everyone. I am looking
forward to the coming term and sharing with the school
community some of the amazing things that have been
happening.
Please, if you haven’t already “liked” the BHS Facebook
page, please do so to stay up to date with the most
current events, as the newsletter is a fortnightly
publication.
Staff changes With Mr Buchanan commencing his work as the Principal
Learning Coach at the end of last term, I have taken on
duties as the Relieving Principal until the end of the year.
Ms Megan Bond is relieving the Deputy Principal position
until the end of the year and Mr Rhys Martin is Relieving
Head Teacher TAS/PDHPE for Semester 2.
We have also had a couple of familiar faces re-joining us.
Ms Ailie Grainger has commenced her permanent role as
Careers Adviser working 4 days a fortnight and job
sharing with Mrs Snowdon. Mrs Hildebrand is taking
leave this term and Mrs Christine O’Donoghue will be
filling in for her.
Attendance This term Ms Bond and I will be having regular meetings
with the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO) to develop
and provide support on increasing student attendance.
Barham High School has traditionally had very pleasing
growth data, indicating we improve students' knowledge
and understanding. However, it makes it difficult to have
this impact if they are not attending on a regular basis.
Students should be aiming for 100% attendance at
school. At the end of each term this year we rewarded
students who attended consistently with a certificate
and a canteen voucher.
I encourage all parents to contact the school if you are
having difficulties in getting your child to school on a
regular basis and we will organise appointments with the
HSLO as well.
School Improvements We have just recently upgraded the roses along the front
of the school to standard yellow roses. They will look
terrific over time when in full bloom and will give a fresh
look to the entrance of the school.
Mobile Phones A reminder to all students and parents of our mobile
phone policy here at BHS. Students are permitted to
bring a mobile phone to school, however upon entering
the classroom they are required to place their phones in
the box at the front of the room. Students who do not
comply with this will be given two warnings and on the
third offence parents will be required to collect the
phone from the school. It will not be welcomed back at
school for the remainder of the term.
Mobile phones have tremendous educational value
when used correctly and if required, teachers will
instruct students to use them.
Caravan At the beginning of the year Mrs Snowdon was successful
in securing funding to run a school-based program. The
plan is to convert a caravan into a food truck which can
be used for school fundraising options. The students will
be developing literacy and numeracy skills as part of the
project and I look forward to it continually progressing.
We have had a caravan donated and students have
already done a mountain of work. Well done!
2020 We have already commenced planning towards
curriculum offerings for 2020 with the Year 11 subject
information session planned for Monday 5th August.

Deputy Principal’s message
I would like to welcome all students and parents back for
semester 2 and trust that everyone has had a restful and
relaxing break ahead of a busy term. I am looking
forward to relieving in the Deputy Principal position,
after the school has undergone a few staff changes at the
end of term 2.
NAIDOC Week Term 3 has started with Barham High School students
undertaking some NAIDOC Week activities in their
Vertical Roll Group lessons. NAIDOC Week was
celebrated at the end of July; however, owing to the
school holidays we have decided to postpone this until
Week 1. Students in Stages 4 and 5 have been
participating in a range of mini lessons that provoke
thought, discussion and understanding about this year’s
NAIDOC week theme; Voice, Treaty, Truth. The
celebrations have continued this week as students
compete to win a range of NAIDOC Week inspired prizes,
the winners of which will be announced by Mrs Batty at
the beginning of Week 3.
Year 10 Year 10 students are currently undertaking a range of
senior subject selection information sessions during core
classes this week, as they get ready to begin Year 11
subject selection processes. Both students and their
parents are invited to attend an important information
evening in the school library on Monday the 5th of August
at 6pm. The evening will shed some light for both parents
and students on the NSW Education Standards Authority
(NESA) requirements for the HSC, minimum standards
with respect to literacy and numeracy, Vocational
education options and future career paths. At the
conclusion of the presentation the school’s careers and
executive team will be available to discuss course
options for students.
Year 8 Science – Space Models
Last weekend the models created by our Year 8 Science
students displayed at the Barham local health medical
trust Lunar Landing ball. The theme for the ball was
centred around the anniversary of the moon landing,
which coincided with last term’s model-making task for
our Earth and its neighbours in Space topic. A great
opportunity for the students’ hard work and creativity to
be showcased in support of a local community event.
Years 7-10 Assessment Planners This term we are launching an initiative with our junior
school assessment, and as such Years 7-10 Assessment
Planners are currently being collated and produced. The
one page planners will be sent home with students later
this week. The planner has been designed to assist with
organisation of assessment tasks and to allow parents to
assist and monitor due dates of assessment events in
term 3.
School Uniform And finally, a reminder about the importance of all
students wearing the correct school uniform. With the
morning temperatures still dipping very low at this time
of the year students are reminded that they need to
bring a note from home to my office before VRG to
explain any out of uniform circumstances. If your child is
in need of uniform garments please contact the front
office to organise access to the uniform shop.

Junior Debating
On Friday 26th July our Junior Debating team took
on their first challengers of the year. Bella, Zantie,
Jess and Lexi were presented with the difficult task
of arguing that NAPLAN should not be abolished.
These students tackled this controversial topic head
on, impressing the adjudicator with their insight and
understanding of how standardised testing is
delivered and used in New South Wales. A
tremendous effort team, well done!
Stage 5 Debating
Our Stage 5 Debating team will have their next debate
on Thursday 8th August. After having two opposing
teams forfeit and a disappointing loss, our team is
looking forward to a chance to put their skills to use.
Good Luck Girls!!

Science/Vis Arts/Careers Report
Stage 5 Visual Arts
The Stage 5 Visual Arts class has been producing a 3D
sculpture using clay. Students were asked to develop a
design for a ceramic item that was functional but also
achieved an aesthetic goal. We have learnt and put into
practice a variety of hand-building techniques, including
coil and stab construction and some even had a whirl on
the potter’s wheel.
Clay pieces have yet to be fired, but this will happen
soon, allowing the students to finish the process with
some surface designs.
SCHOOL DRIVE SUBSIDY
If you live a long way from school or the school
bus stop, you may be able to get financial

Careers Report
Food Truck Students from Year 7 Careers, a Stage 5 Maths and a Year
11 student have been busily working on stage 1 of the
food truck project. Students have been hard at work
clearing out the contents of the caravan and then
demolishing the internal structure. They have also been
creating layouts that may work within the food truck. We
have been lucky enough to have some very skilled
tradesman come to school to help with ideas and
implementing the second stage of the project which will
require the inside of the van to be clad in in impervious
and durable material that is graded for food preparation.
Key dates for Year 12 There are many important dates fast approaching for
Year 12’s. Please find a list of some of these dates below
that students need to be mindful of.
Year 12 students all have access to a Google classroom
that has all of these dates. Please take the time to go
over these with your child. The page contains links for
speedy access to these websites. If you have any
questions or concerns it is crucial that you contact Mrs
Snowdon at school, so these deadlines are met within
the necessary time and are being made with the correct
knowledge. Mrs Snowdon has access to a variety of
resources, including experienced Careers Advisers, so do
not hesitate to ask the question.
UAC Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS) are one

Homelessness : A Country Issue Too!
Homelessness Week 4-10 August 2019
Each year Northern District Community Health (NDCH) supports over 200 community
members who are at risk of or who are homeless – these families have more than 500
dependent children.
Every year in Australia over 24,000 Victorians and 116,000 Australians will be homeless
and more than 17,000 of these are children under the age of 12. It is important to
remember that children become homeless through no fault of their own.
Homelessness doesn’t discriminate. Over the past 5 years women over the age of 55 are
the fastest growing group of people who are homeless, increasing by 28%. The street
homeless, are important but only make up 7% of homelessness in Australia. In our regions
children can be homeless but not living on the streets. They may simply move between
family and friends houses and emergency accommodation.
NDCH’s homelessness week campaign ‘A Couch is not a Home’ is running again this
Homelessness Week and is a great opportunity to speak to your children about
homelessness to build understanding and compassion. There are many causes of
homelessness but poverty, including lack of affordable housing, family violence and
relationship breakdowns are the major causes.
