Letter from the President

Dear CBA Members,

Do you hate your job? By that I mean, do you loathe Sunday afternoons? When the alarm clock goes off Monday morning, do you find yourself swinging at it like David Ortiz swings for the Green Monster? Does the mere mention of Monday send the dark clouds like just after you wash your car? For many of us, Monday mornings don’t bring good feelings. For many, Monday mornings are anxiety filled. According to Dr. Chauncey Crandall, MD, writing for the website “Newsmax Health, A study at Tokyo Women’s Medical University fitted 175 men and women with a device that would measure their blood pressure around the clock for a week. The results were surprising: The highest blood pressure readings came from those who were getting ready for work on Monday morning. Those who stayed asleep on Monday morning because they did not have to go to work did not experience the same surge. What do we learn from this? Either sleep until noon or do everything in your power to change how you feel about Mondays. According to Dr. Crandall, other studies have shown that there are 20 percent more heart attacks on Monday mornings than any other day. Researchers suspect that the early morning rise in blood pressure that is part of the body’s natural 24-hour rhythm is to blame.

I am fortunate, I really like and enjoy my job. Not only do I like my day-to-day duties, I especially like teaching marketing and financial responsibility. I actually look forward to Sunday afternoons. It’s my time to plan for Monday. What are some of the things people can do to reduce stress on Monday morning?

1. What I found helpful everyday of the week was to go to work a bit early, get a cup of coffee and the newspaper so I could read peacefully while adjusting to being in the work environment. If you don’t have an office, going to the local diner or the employee cafe can also provide the opportunity to quietly adjust to work. It’s like going into the pool gradually rather than diving in and being shocked by the cold water.

2. Once work starts and if you are able, focus on the easy tasks first while gradually working up to those that are more difficult and challenging.

3. Give yourself something to look forward to for that day (and for every day). Scheduling a lunch with a colleague/workmate is one idea or going for a walk during lunch or any other pleasant activity.

4. Schedule fun things to do with the family after work so that there is always something to look forward to.

Of course the elephant in the room is your job. Maybe you just don’t care for your job? If that’s the case, you know what you need to do. It really isn’t about Monday mornings. But if that is the case, that doesn’t have to call for more medication. Simply make a plan and stick to it. If your job is causing health problems, learn to live with it, through stress management or get a new one, with less stress.

The Parade is Sun., May 26. Step off is 12:30 p.m. at Wm. J. Johnston School. We get our space assignment a week or so before and meet at the school before noon because they shut off Norwich Avenue at that time. This year’s theme is “The 60th Anniversary of the Korean War”. If you or anyone you know served our country, or you want to march in memory or in honor of them, please join our group.

This is a good time where we get a group of members, family and friends to march down Norwich Ave. and end at Hayward Ave. Children are welcome to march with you - the more the merrier! The CBA has a banner to carry and we wave to all our friends and townspeople. It is a great way to get yourself out there in the public eye, and it is a lot of fun.

If you are an early riser you may join us the morning of the parade at 7:30 a.m. when we will be lining the streets with flags, to let the town know we care.

Let Jack Faski know if you will attend by emailing [email protected]. Pictures of previous year’s CBA marchers are on our website, www.colchesterctbusiness.com, in the Photo Gallery. Please join us to represent the CBA in this year’s parade in memory and in tribute to those who served.

Digital Camera Care Spring is here and it’s time to get your camera ready for lots of great picture-taking opportunities. Do a little camera maintenance now and you’ll be ready to capture those great shots later.

Camera Batteries: Rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries that power most digital cameras normally have a useful life of three to five years. If your battery is more than three years old consider having a spare battery charged and ready to go. Batteries “wear out” gradually and you don’t want to find out that you’re only getting a few shots per charge when you’re at a graduation or big family event. Also, as with cell phone batteries, you don’t want to charge batteries for extended periods of time when it can be avoided. Charging a battery all-day or overnight is a sure way to shorten it’s life significantly.

Memory Cards: Don’t just erase, erase, erase. Erasing just removes the image from the card’s File Allocation Table so it can’t be located by the camera or computer... but it is still on the card. Because of this, what eventually happens is that the files of your new pictures start to become fragmented and at some point you end up with a corrupt image file and an unusable card. If this happens there’s still a chance that your pictures can be recovered... so don’t throw it away. You can avoid this “horror” by formatting your card regularly. Formatting will either completely wipe all data off of the card and rebuild the boot sector and index, or just rebuild the boot sector and index. Either way, the card is “freshened-up” and the chance of corrupt files is at a very minimum. Just remember, always save your pictures in two different locations before formatting.

Camera Cleaning: You should have two microfiber clothes, a lens blower and lens fluid for proper camera care. To clean the lens, gently dust (without pressure) it off with a microfiber cloth and blow dust and grit off with a blower. If the lens looks fairly clean at this point then just fog it with your breath and wipe it with the cloth using a circular motion. If there are still smudges or spots, put three drops of lens cleaning fluid on the cloth and clean it. Use this cloth for lenses only... the other can be used to clean the LCD screen and camera body. If you have an interchangeable lens camera and are starting to see dark “fuzzy” spots on your pictures, you probably need a professional sensor cleaning. There are inexpensive covers for cameras that are handy to have in your camera bag for dusty and damp situations. You do have a camera bag?

If you have any questions or need camera care supplies or a sensor cleaning please stop by our store... we’ll be glad to help. Happy shooting!
