News Croatian Hotels on the hunt for the tourism Oscar

For this year’s World Travel Awards, a sort of tourist Oscar, nominated in five categories is the same number of Crotian hotels. Dubrovnik’s Palace Hotel and Korčula’s Lešić Dimitri Palace were nominated for the leading European hotels award, and The Palace, along with Split’s Le Meridien Lav hotel is in the running for the award for the leading European conference hotel. The Palace will appear in the competition for Europe’s leading resort, while the Le Meridien Lav, together with Dubrovnik’s Rixon Libertas hotel is nominated for Europe’s leading casino resort. Hvar’s Adriana competes for the prize for Europe’s leading boutique resort. With the European World Travel Awards, a separate prize for the leading Croatian hotel will be awarded in which are competing The Dubrovnik Palace Hotel, The Excelsior, The Grand Villa Argentina, The Hilton Imperial, The Bellevue and The Rixos Libertas, then Opatija’s Mozart, Split’s Le Meridien Lav, Hvar’s Adriana Hotel , Korčula’s Lešić Dimitri Palace hotel, Rovinj’s Istria and in Zagreb The Sheraton and The Regent Esplanade. For the leading Croatian boutique hotel are competing The Design Hotel Astoria, The Kastil, Split’s Vestibul Palace, Hvar’s Hotel Riva and Dubrovnik’s Pucic Palace and for the leading Croatian SPA resort The Palace Hotel, The Adriana, Hotel Ivan in Bol on Brač, The Milenij, Hotel Istra and Le Meridien Lav. The Le Meridien brand is competing for the leading hotel brand in Europe, the city of Dubrovnik has been nominated as best European tourist destination and best cruise destination and the port of Split as one of the best ports for cruisers. The voting for the World Travel Awards prizes, which has a 15-year tradition, will last until early August and the gala award ceremony itself will take place on October 1st in Antalya.

The number of nominations in several categories indicate that the Croatian tourism offer, as do its hotels, grow stronger and better from year to year. Recognition from The World Travel Awards is regarded as one of the best recommendations for any tourism product and assessment is divided into eight geographical regions: Europe, Asia / Pacific, The Caribbean, Central and Latin America, Africa, The Middle East and North and South America, in order to objectively cover all aspects of this global industry that despite the current worldwide economic crisis continues to record a lesser decline in business than other industries.

The Spanish specialized “Cruises News Media Group” has declared Croatia and Turkey the best destinations for cruise ships - cruisers in 2009. and they were awarded the prize

“Cruise Excellence Awards”. The awards of the ‘’ News Media Group Cruises” are awarded based on the results of a survey of Spanish passengers on cruises, who anonymously graded ports, destinations and shipping companies in 14 categories.So the award for Best International Port in 2009. was won by Venice and Malta, and the same award for 2008. was shared last year by Dubrovnik and Venice. The best entertainment on a ship was provided by, “Quail Travel Group,” The Best Luxury Cruising company is “Silversea Cruises”, and the MSC Splendida was declared the best ship in the Mediterranean in 2009.Croatia is an important destination for cruisers, and this segment of tourism is growing, as indicated by the Central Bureau of Statistics which shows the number of travelers who have visited Croatia on cruisers has doubled in the last four years, reaching a figure of almost one million passengers in 2009. According to the data of last year there were 754 foreign cruise ships recorded on the Croatian coast, which is 8.3 percent or 68 trips less than the previous year, however, 5.3 percent more passengers arrived on these cruisers or a total of 989 000 of them.

Croatia - The most beautiful destination in Central Europe The Belgian, English and Spanish newspapers have recently published a report in which it is recommended to visit and learn about Dubrovnik during the summer and winter, especially during the Feste of St. Vlaho, and this town in southern Croatia also boasts as a conference destination. The Belgian magazine “Travel 2” describes the experience of the Feste of St. Vlaho and the release of doves of the sea and freedom, the Kandelora and a stately procession. It is recommended to stay in Dubrovnik’s luxury hotels and villas, praises the local cuisine, the Dubrovnik Summer Games, holidays on the Elafit islands and Mljet and the beauties of its National Park. There is commendable talk about Cavtat, wines from Pelješac, and they say that oysters from the Mali Ston Bay are a must try. Dubrovnik, Krakow and Prague as a desirable vacation destination are suggested by the British “Daily Telegraph” in its journal Ultra Travel, which especially praised the architecture of Dubrovnik, in which it states that it “inspires the soul.” In addition to listing the desirable luxury hotels Excelsior, the Bellevue and Pucic Palace, it is recommended to visit the island of love Lokrum and the cultural offer of the city is mentioned, especially a visit to the Art Gallery and Museum and a tour of the city sights. Pula – The World Award for Branding At the prestigious international competition Rebrand 2010. Global Awards, the branding of the city of Pula for The Tourist Board of Pula has been allocated as one of the world’s best transformations of an existing brand. The work of the creative agency Parabureaua was rated with high marks and set apart as a highly successfully accomplished rebranding process, and Pula was placed side by side with large and important global brands such as Nike, Walmart, McAfeeja, Reuters, Deutsche Post. Pula has also become the first Croatian city that has received a prestigious international award for branding. The branding of Pula began with the aim of a tourist, cultural and general social promotion and development of the city. The designers of Parabureaua brought out the new visual communication of Pula by using its heraldic treasures: the city’s coat of arms with a green shield and a yellow cross. The recognized geometrizam of the cross was “translated” by designers into the form of a character

“plus”, in which they installed a new emotional dimension compared to the visual context. Rebrand is the first and largest organization that tracks and rewards the process of transforming brands and one of the main programs is an annual award of international recognition of the most successfully implemented branding projects, which is usually covered by numerous media such as The Wall Street Journal, CNN Money, BusinessWeek and Yahoo! Finance. The award was established in 2005. and each year attracts competitors from all over the world. The best solutions are evaluated by a jury composed of distinguished experts from the world’s largest branding agencies.

About 80 percent of Europeans this year, intends to travel on holiday, usually within their own country and Croatia is among the top few most desirable destinations outside the EU, according to a special Eurobarometer survey published recently in Brussels. The study was conducted in 27 member countries and also Croatia, Norway, Iceland, Turkey and Macedonia. 30,000 randomly selected citizens aged over 15 were interviewed. Of the total number of respondents, 80 percent intend to travel. Half of those who will travel will spend their holiday in their own country, and in 17 of the 32 countries where the research was conducted, among the top three most desired destinations, there is just one outside the EU. Only 20 percent of respondents reported that they almost certainly would not travel this year, which is considerably less than last year when it was 33 percent. Croatia is among the top three most popular destinations in seven countries – the Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia and Norway. In Slovenia, Croatia in the first place, and this year 30 percent of Slovenes intend to visit. In Norway and Slovakia Croatia is in second place and in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria and Poland it is in third place. As for Croats, 78 percent intend to spend their holidays in their own country, 3 percent in Italy, and 2 percent in Spain. In only four countries included in the research - Slovenia, Malta, Luxembourg and Ireland - in the first place is a foreign rather than domestic destination. The most popular destination is Spain in general, followed by France and Italy. Most EU citizens, 57 percent, put traditional tourist destinations in first place, while 28 percent preferred a new, unusual destination. A little less than half the respondents, 46 percent of them, considered to have sufficient funds to finance their holiday, which is five percent higher than in 2009 and 10 percent, the same as last year, said that they have serious financial problems that could affect their holiday plans. For 37 percent the main motive for travelling is “rest and recreation”, 19 percent “sun and beach” and 17 percent

“visiting friends and relatives”.Tourism is a major service industry in the European Union with 5 percent of GDP and 6 percent of employees.

The British Sunday Times recently published a list of the 100 most beautiful and desirable villas on the Mediterranean, and included five selected holiday houses from Croatia – Dubrovnik’s Poet’s House (house of the poet), villas Maruka and Dol on Brač, Captain’s house in Viganj on Pelješac, and Stone Villa above Podgora.The most beautiful villas were found by the Times reporter in France and Spain, 25 in number and another 22 in Italy and 17 in Greece. Among the best offered deals is the villa La Torch in Bretagne, in which four people can spend a week during the peak season for 577 pounds. The most expensive accomodations cost up to ten times more per person, as does for example, the Villa Olous in Crete, where a week for 16 people costs 24,545 pounds.

Kutjevo, located in the northeastern part of the Požega valley, halfway between Požega and Našice, is a city with rich historical heritage which every May marks the visit of Maria Theresa to the city in 1741. This honor given to their city has not been forgotten by the people of Kutjevo. On the contrary, many events going back three centuries tend to celebrate this important moment in the history of the town, located on the southern slopes of Krndija and Papuk in a narrow valley of the river Kutjevčanka. There is a parade going through the city of historical forces, brass music, and various associations, and in front of the castle Kutjevo there are theatrical performances that will more closely describe life from that time. Visitors can experience the meeting of Francis Baron Trenk and Maria Theresa in Kutjevo in 1741. Colonel Franjo Trenk, born in Italy, founded the famous unit Pandurs in 1741. which counted more than a thousand soldiers. Pandurs were known as a notorious army from France to the Czech Republic, but no one questioned their bravery and skill of war, indeed the enemy in the same proportion of men had no chance of winning. The first written records of Kutjevo date back to the 13th century when the Cistercian Monks, commonly known as

“white friars” founded an abbey, “Vallis Honesta de Gotho’’ in 1232. From that time there is a famous wine cellar and a stone table from the time of Baron Trenk and Empress Maria Theresa that is traditionally kept there. This land was conquered by the Turks in 1535, and after 150 years of Turkish rule, in 1686. a nobleman, Ivan Josip Babic was enthroned, who in 1698., with the consent of the Emperor Leopold, submitted the estate to the Jesuit order who had in less than two decades renewed the Abbey, built a new parish church and the baroque castle, renovated the basement and especially promoted grape growing and wine production. In the late 19th and early 20th century large vineyards and fuit plantations were raised (the plantation Dragan was at that time the largest in Europe) and made Kutjevo well known in the wine making business all over the world.Kutjevo was famous for its Lipizzaner horses and riding school.

Samobor - a paradise for gourmets Besides the carnival, Samobor is known among gourmets for its custard pastry (kremšnita), a sweet cake made of cream foam. Samobor’s custard pastries are also special in that they are eaten hot, and everywhere else are served exclusively as chilled cakes. This desert delicacy is honored traditionally by an organized event called ‘Days of the cream cake (kremšnita)’ that will be held this year from the 7th to the 9th of May. In those days the most famous Samobor patisseries will serve the cake, which is said by a local custom to open all doors. In fact it is said that, if you have a problem or disagreement with someone, give them a cream cake, and then, it is believed all will be forgiven. Besides enjoying this sweet that the people of Samobor are so proud of, evidented by the fact that they even wrote an anthem dedicated to the cake, during the ‘’Days of the cream cake’’ numerous cultural and entertainment events will be organized on the main square. Amongst other things, there will be a competition in preparing the cream cakes and writing Haiku poetry about custard pastries. Samobor is located 5km north of the Croatian border with Slovenia and 20km from Zagreb airport which is only a half an hour’s drive away.

In the area around the chapel of St. Helena and the castle of St. Helena the traditional International Knights Tournament will be held on the 16th and the 17th May. With a dozen medieval encampments, model castles, medieval combat machines and knight combats the event offers numerous workshops about medieval cuisine, mint, archery, and the medieval inquisition. The tournament expects performances of many of the medieval knights from Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Portugal. The tournament is organized to commemorate the Battle of St.Helena, which is one of the most significant victories for the Croats over the Turkish conquerers. The battle was fought on 19th August 1557. on the plains along the river Lonja at the foot of St. Helena, in which the Croatian army, led by Captain Ivan Lenković, beat the superior Turkish army and forced it to flee.

The program will display the eve of the battle and one day in the life of Croatian peasants, craftsmen and soldiers, which was crucial in Croatian victory over the Turks. That day will bring together traditional crafts and craftsmen who will show their artefacts and their skills, and their protection will be ensured by a military camp, and soldiers equipped with replicas of medieval weapons. In these camps, visitors will be able to see the full arsenal of medieval weapons, shields and metal costumes. If you get hungry, you will be soothed by hot gruel made of forgotten grain and goose flavored with honey prepared in a medieval way. In tournaments and competitions in Saint Helena you do not just have to be a spectator, you can join in the knights games, try out archery, drive a horse carriage or ride a horse. Saint Helena is a village situated near the town of Sveti Ivan Zelina in the northeastern part of the Zagreb County, which is about 30 km from Zagreb.

Gorjani - The annual spring procession of the queen

Croatia is, along China, Japan and Korea, a country with the most protected cultural phenomenons in Europe, and on the UNESCO list of world intangible cultural heritages. Recently, to the six Croatian cultural phenomenons, was added, the annual spring procession of the queen from Gorjani, an east- Slavonian village near Djakovo. This tradition is held on the day of ‘Ghosts’, followed by colorful folk costumes with richly decorated hats on their heads and swords in their hands. Since 1898. there has been written evidence of this tradition, which has become a trademark of Gorjani and the surrounding area. This custom is known to have existed before, but there is no written trace about previous processions. According to a legend, during Turkish conquering they broke into Gorjani as well. They captured all the men in the village, after which their women put on brightly colored clothes, put the men’s hats on their heads decorated with artificial flowers, and armed with sickles and scythes went to the Turkish camp. The Turks thought they were ghosts, got scared and fled. And so the women of Gorjani set their husbands, fathers and brothers free. Ever since then, they have been dressing up for the feast, in honor of this event which is to this day kept in its original form. The only change now is that girls carry swords instead of sickles and scythes.

The village Gorjani was first mentioned in written records in 1244. In 1537. the Turks took over the village, destroyed all the existing facilities and built new ones. From Turkish times there still stands a part of the tower of the Turkish Bey Jahija. In 1837. pastor Filipović transformed the remains of the tower into a church and added a bell tower. Today it is the Church of Epiphany. For visitors who decide to expolore the rich tradition and beautiful national costumes, hosts offer a one-day pheasant hunt and a horse carriage ride, all complemented by a rich offer of Slavonian cuisine.

Zagreb – A metropolis in bloom On Bundek in Novi Zagreb, near the river Sava, in late May (May 26th to 31st) the traditional international garden exhibition Floraart, a Flower Fair which spreads countless combinations of colors and aromas of diverse and interestingly decorated flowers will be held. This event draws its roots back to the distant 1891. and 1906. because those were the years of the first flower shows in Zagreb, recorded on old postcards. But these shows also relied on even further times, on the tradition of Zagreb’s medieval gardens, a lovely oasis of beauty from which the landscapes of the city were formed, the culture whose historical climax is the Maksimir park and the Lenuci horseshoe. Vinkovci – The Capital of Šokadija In Slavonia, the eastern part of the Pannonian- Danube part of Croatia, on the northern edge of Bosut lowlands, is the largest settlement of South East Slavonia and Western Srijem, the former very important military center and Šokac metropolis, the city of Vinkovci. The city of rich history, culture, architecture, folklore, traditions and customs. The old town center and most of the city is located along the left bank of the river Bosut. Due to its favorable geotraffic position, the climatic and geological characteristics, the area has always been attractive for settlement. The continuity of settlement over more than 7000 years is very rare even in European terms. Vinkovci belongs to a group of cities of the northen Croatian area that are characterized by significant architectural characteristics. The architectural structure is the result of historical stages through which it went through as well as various economic and construction impacts and the economic and financial power of its inhabitants. This is a city with very rich architectural heritage. Vinkovci is now a spatially large city in whose structure we observe several large squares and major, long street routes that were the basis of urban development. In the same way Vinkovci marks several major parks and green public spaces, and a number of clearly recognizable contemporarily planned districts and settlements. The central square with its distinct characteristics of Baroque urbanism and peripheral parts which enclosed it, represents an area of high cultural, historical, urban, architectural, stylistic and aesthetic values of Vinkovci. Within the above-mentioned urban canopy there is a park decorated in French style. Vinkovci is known for its “Vinkovci Autumn Festival”, the largest folk event in this part of Europe which has been held already for 40 odd years. It is a festival of original Croatian folklore in which folk groups from various parts of Croatia, the diaspora, and by groups from Europe and America participate in. National Park Risnjak The air distance of less than 15 miles from the sea, in the hinterland of Rijeka and the Kvarner coast stretches to the National Park Risnjak. Located in Gorski Kotar, the wooded area of western Croatia is occupied by Risnjak and Snježnik. The mountain area of Risnjak was declared a national park in 1953. and 44 years later, the park is expanded to the Snježnik range area and the spring of the river Kupa. Most of the national park is under trees which are composed of mountain meadows Lesko, Šegina and Lazac. The highest peak of the park is Veliki Risnjak (1528 meters), which along with a massive Snježnik (1506 meters) makes the climate and vegetation barrier between the coastal and mountainous parts of the Croatian land. The climate of the Adriatic Sea that extends over the nearby Kvarner and terrestrial impacts that extend through the valley of the Kupa, colide and significantly determine the uniqueness of the climate regions in the National Park Risnjak. Thus, in Risnjak prevail pleasantly warm summers, rainy springs and autumns, and long, snowy and cold winters. The valley of the river Kupa is the only inhabited part of the National Park. In this area there are only a few villages in which only about 50 people live. Because of the very diverse climatic and geological conditions a diverse flora and fauna are maintained here. So the National Park found 30 plant communities, 14 of them forest ones. 70% of the national park is located in the zone of strict protection. The fauna of Risnjak is particularly interesting. Ornithological research has shown that living in the park are 114 species of birds such as capercaillie, woodpeckers, peregrine falcons and others. The National Park Risnjak is the natural habitat of three large European carnivores: bears, wolves and lynxes, and also represented is other game. The last native lynx (ris) specimens after which Risnjak was named, resided in this area in the early 20th century. while today the lynx inhabits the neighboring Slovenian mountains from where it has settled down again in the national park. The National Park Risnjak has already been for 140 years a confluence for naturalists and biologists and the place for basic natural and applied forest research. The park is now a place where visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature, engage in sports activities, and learn how to preserve nature for future generations. A place for rest can be found in the decorated mountain house, “Dr. Joseph Schlosser Klekovski “ below the top of Risnjak located on the beautiful Schlosser meadow. The lodge is open from early May until the end of October. On Snježnik, however, located below the top of the mountain is the lodge “M. Albahari” which is currently closed for reconstruction.

In the park, at an altitude of 700 meters, there is the educational trail Lesko, 4200 meters long. Touring it requires medium fitness. The beginning of the trail is near the Board and the Pansion of the National Park Risnjak, in Crni Lug.

Varaždin - A Favourite of the Lonely Planet The most famous and largest travel guide in the world, The Lonely Planet, in its Internet edition compiled a list of recommended places to see in Croatia. In first place is Varaždin, described as the capital of carefully preserved baroque architecture. After Varaždin are Samobor, Zagreb, Plitvice lakes, the falls of Krka, Hvar, Korčula, Mljet and tenth on the list is Dubrovnik.This city in northwestern Croatia has pushed some recently popular coastal destinations off the Lonely Planet scale. This sends a clear message that Croatia is increasingly recognized as a mainland tourist industry. After last year’s edition of the French Michelin guide, in which Varaždin is the only town apart from Zagreb in continental Croatia, which is recommended with two of the three possible stars, this is another recognition of the city’s decoration and the hospitality of the people of Varaždin. Known as the city of baroque music and flowers, parks, sumptuous palaces and churches, once called “Little Vienna”, Varaždin is one of the most beautiful cities in the continental Croatia. The good conditions, in the fertile fields along the Drava river and at the intersection of major routes leading from Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea, had made the Varaždin area inhabitable as far back as the 8th or 9th century. The first written mention of Varaždin is in a document of the Croatian-Hungarian king Bela III. from 1181, where the historical name of Varazdin is mentioned as - Garestin. In the 17th century Varaždin experienced a bloom of crafts, trade, the arts, education, churches, convents, seminaries, luxurious palaces, all mostly in the Baroque style. The city became a center of luxury and splendor, cultural and social events, balls and feasts, gaining the name “Little Vienna”. In 1767. Empress Maria Theresa decided to make Varaždin the Headquarter of the Croatian Royal Council, by which it officially became the capital of the Kingdom of Slavonia, Croatia and Dalmatia. Varaždin developed in the 18th century as the political center of Croatia and as very stong commercial, craft and ecclesiastical center, until the disastrous fire that devastated it on the 25th April 1776. After this event, much of the citizens and the nobility abandoned the city, and the government and all major state institutions were transferred to Zagreb. The rich history, cultural heritage and cultural traditions of the former Croatian capital city are reflected today in its picturesque streets and squares as well as many cultural events. Varaždin can thank its tourism boom to its beauty and orderliness, but also to the carefully selected and developed events such as the Varaždin Baroque Evenings, Špancirfest – a festival of street entertainers, and the Trash Film Festival. If you walk the streets of Varaždin, you’ll feel the spirit of past time through a number of cultural monuments. In the old core of the town you may notice urban elements of baroque, even rococo and classicism.

Many churches and monasteries testify to its rich history but also the importance of spiritual development, in which the Franciscans, the Jesuits, the Capuchins and the Ursulines were especially prominent. At the heart of the city, on King Tomislav Square, better known as the Corso, is the palace Drašković, once the seat of the Croatian ban and the city hall building from the 1523., which is considered to be one of the oldest in Europe. The sumptuous palaces, beautifully decorated streets, squares, parks, numerous churches, palaces, baroque facades of buildings and houses, the City Museum, the Old Town, the Croatian National Theatre, various cultural events and hospitable people give Varaždin the distinctive identity and attract many visitors and tourists who enjoy the atmosphere that the city provides and the experience of its spiritual and material values.

Tribalj - “ethno hotel Balatura” Outside the crowded tourist centers of the Adriatic, in a quiet valley Vinodol, in Crikvenica, 6 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea, is the ethno hotel “Balatura”, surrounded by rugged hills and forests. Rab – The island of landscape diversity and rich historical heritage The island of Rab is a part of the Kvarner Bay archipelago in the northern Adriatic Sea. It is 22km long, and 3-10km wide. Apart from the town of Rab on the island are located seven other small towns: Barbat, Banjol, Palit, Kampor Mundanije, Supetarska Draga and Lopar. The island belongs to a series of small islands, 27 islets and reefs surrounding it and thus contribute to its beauty: the island Lukovac, uninhabited island of Dolin, Sv. Grgur, Sv. Juraj, Veli and Mali Laganj, Trstenik, Veli and Mali Dolfin, Goli and others. As the island is protected by winds by the hill Kamenjak, temperatures seldom drop below zero. Rab is an island of sun because it has 2470 hours of sunshine annually. The island is mentioned in the 4th century BC by the Greek geographer Pseudo Scylax and in ancient times by Pliny the Elder – under the name Arba. The foundations of the city’s fortifications on Kaldanac, which is the oldest part of Rab, date back to the 1st century, from the time of Emperor Augustus Oktavian. If travelling by ferry from Jablanac to Mišnjak on the island of Rab, the first image that appears is a part of the island that is covered with bare stone and it appears as though there is no life, just a stone. After a short ride from the pier in Mišnjak the landscape slowly changes as the stone is replaced by lush Mediterranean vegetation, oak trees, oaks, pines and cypresses. With a multitude of small and large parks, the largest green wealth of the town is the city’s park Komrčar, one of the most beautiful parks on the Adriatic coast. The town of Rab has a long history as a cultural and historical center. It was mentioned 10 years before Christ in an old Roman document by which the Roman emperor Oktavian Augustus proclaims municipium and gives it independence. The city earned the title Felix (happy), which means that it was already developed and civilized. The old part of town is surrounded by medieval stone walls built back in the 12th and 13 century that mostly stand to this day. The old city is dominated by four towers and numerous churches. One of the most important monuments in Rab is the church of St. Mary from the 12th century (the former Bishop’s Basilica). The bell tower of the basilica from the 12th century stands away from the church, dominates the town and is one of the most beautiful examples of late Romanesque architecture in Croatia. Visitors of the town are offered high quality accommodation in seven hotels, a campsite, numerous inns, villas, apartments and rooms in private houses, and there are also two marinas. The island of Rab is an island of amazing diversity of landscape and the wonderful variety of beaches and the town of Rab is a place rich in historical heritage, long and pleasant walks, with a 120 year tradition of organized tourism.

Zagreb - Maksimir Park, an oasis of peace A popular green oasis for Zagreb’s inhabitants is the largest city park Maksimir, which has marked 220 years since its founding. The park was founded in the late 18th century in a dense centuries-old forest, thanks to Bishop Maximilian the noble Vrhovac, a great nature lover, in whose honor the park was named. The bishop began works in 1787. on the hunting grounds of Zagreb’s bishops, wanting to design it in a classic French style, with flower beds, plants, pavilions, rose bushes and greenhouses. The park was partially furnished and officially opened for the public in 1794. The Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Juraj Haulik, the ultimate creator of the park, left the French idea of the park and in the 19th century edited it in the style of an English romantic garden – a natural, luxurious park-forest. The 316

acres are governed by meadows and clearings, paths and trails, regulated streams and five artificial lakes that were formed. An imposing entrance gate was built, pavilions, the bishop’s summer residence, viewpoints, decorative sculptures were placed and areas with plants were allocated. One of the most recognizable symbols of the park is the ‘Vidikovac’, the central building was built on the clearing in 1843. when the park was completed and opened to the citizens of Zagreb to use. Vidikovac is designed as a two-storey tower surrounded by two terraces where you can still to this day have a drink or enjoy the view of the park. In 1842, modeled after the then modern houses, the Swiss House was built, a rustic wooden structure with a stone ground floor. This used to be the woodsman’s house, and today it is arranged as a small bistro. In 1925. the zoo built and a memorial mound – barrow, in the memory of the one thousand year old Croatian kingdom. The monument was created by bringing earth from 155 sites of important cultural and political events around Croatia. The northernmost part of the park is wild, where a thick, primeval forest extends. Park Maksimir was protected in 1948. as a natural rarity, and in 1964. was declared a monument of landscape architecture and protected cultural property. The harmony of its sunny meadows, gorgeous trees, lakes with white swans and long, winding hiking and biking trails, attract fans of botany and bird watchers, but mostly ordinary people, hikers who seek peace and respite from everyday life. Today Maksimir park is an ideal place, five minutes from downtown, where you can at least for a moment remove yourself from city noise and enjoy your break and recreation. There are many possibilities in this respect the park offers its visitors, such as the walk along the landscaped park paths, Nordic walking, running, cycling, rowing boats on the Third Lake, and for younger visitors there are two modern playgrounds. Maksimir Park is to Zagreb as the Bois de Boulogne is to Paris, the Tiergarten is to Berlin or the Regents Park to London.

Grožnjan – the city of art On a hill not far from the Motovun woods in northwestern Istria, above the Mirna river valley, 15 kilometers from the sea, lies the ancient town of Grožnjan. The city, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, is proud of its rich historical and cultural heritage, natural beauty of the area, all enriched by art. From the high walls of Grožnjan there is a view all the way from Ćićarija to Motovun, to the mouth of the river Mirna and Istrian Novigrad. One of the most beautiful characteristics of the town is its untouched medieval core, with its charming narrow cobbled streets. The city now has about a hundred inhabitants, forty galleries, and the official use of the Croatian and Italian languages. This is a small town but a great cultural significance, not only in Croatia but also internationally, and lives intensly through the summer months. Since 1965. Grožnjan was declared a town of artists, thanks to the numerous art events and artists who come here to live and work. The artists have settled in the old stone houses which were given for safekeeping to prevent the extinction of the city. Every year in early May the streets and squares of Grožnjan go through a metamorphosis and turn into a truly artistic beehive: it opens its summer music academy for young people, art, dance and drama workshops, peace activism workshops led by renowned experts and teachers and famous names from music, art and drama. In those few summer months Grožnjan lives and breathes art, the labyrinth of its streets and its many cultural and historical monuments becomes one big stage with cultural and artistic events which are constantly interchanging, the sounds of jazz and classical guitar and piano, violin and cello, percussion and vibraphone. One of the most popular events is the artistic manifestation “Ex tempore” and numerous exhibitions at the City Gallery, as well as thirty private galleries and studios where visitors can see many works of various artists. In Grožnjan there is also the center of Croatian musical youth, which refines its work to the historical place as an international cultural center and a world center of youth meetings. The center was envisioned as an international camp, and was established in 1969. Until today it has been visited by more than 22,000 participants from 90 countries worldwide. Agriculture, rural tourism and small businesses have revived the wider environment of Grožnjan, and to the vibrancy of the city, especially during summer, contribute numerous arts and cultural events. Along with the traditional jazz festival, one of the most famous events is “Ex tempore”. Many artists and culture workers gather around the so called Grožnjan artistic circle, but also the city’s gallery Fonticus, that has in the last decade become a professional exhibition space. There is, among other things, the active and Imaginary Film Academy, founded in 1955, as a non-profit organization. Its goal is to encourage and organize activities that bring together theater, television and film professionals who advocate for the recognition of dramatic arts in Croatia and abroad.

The city, among other things, is a member of the association of wine cities and olive oils, and offers guests two famous restaurants “Pintur” and “Bastia” where you can enjoy traditional Istrian dishes. Accommodation is offered in twenty houses, apartments and rooms.

Tourists are increasingly interested in the underwater safari In recent years, underwater safari has become an increasingly popular form of tourism in Croatia where the attractive offshore and indented eastern Adriatic coast has a lot to offer. The Croatian coast has so far attracted mostly mainland tourists and sailors but in recent years diving activities have also risen. Croatia is the fourth country in Europe by the number of underwater archaeological findings. According to the Ministry of Culture, in the Croatian Adriatic there are about 400 underwater archaeological sites, of which 200 come from prehistory to the new era, and the most recent from the time of the Second World War. The Ministry has protected 92 sites as cultural property, nine of which are under metal protection. In Croatian waters diving can only be performed in an organized manner and not individually, and the Ministry has issued, for the period from 2009. to 2013., 25 concessions for conducting and organizing activities on underwater cultural resources, and for four underwater archeological zones around the islands of Mljet, Lastovo and Vis and in the area of Cavtat. In these zones, there are 35 sites, and 6 out of the zones. Along the northern coast of the island Kaprij in the Šibenik aquatorium is an attractive well preserved wreck of an iron boat from World War II, “Francesca da Riminnija,” which was torpeded and sunk while it was anchored in disguise, by the Union Army in 1944. It is a boat that is 42 meters long and 12 meters wide, with three well-preserved masts. The wreck was only discovered in 1994. The ship was owned before World War II by two brothers from the island Ist who used it for commercial purposes. At the beginning of the war it was mobilized by the Italians, who used it to transport military cargo between the Croatian and Italian coasts. After the capitulation of Italy, in September 1943. the Germans took it and used it for the same purpose. Not far from the island Kaprij there are interesting caves and reefs that are also an attractive destination for lovers of the underwater world. It is estimated that in the Croatian part of the Adriatic there are around 150,000 divers per year. Certainly the most famous wreck in the Croatian Adriatic coast is the “Baron Gautch”, an Austro-Hungarian ship from the First World War, sunk by a sea mine sunk in the waters in front of Rovinj in 1914. The ship was 84 meters long and 11 meters wide, and sunk at a depth of 28-40 meters. This wreck also is under the protection of the Ministry of Culture and can be visited only in the organization of a licensed diving center.

In the waters of Kvarner divers are also happy to visit the wreck of the Italian merchant ship “Lina” in the vicinity of Cres, a sunken cargo ship “Tihany” near the Island of Unije and the Greek freighter “Peltastis” that sank along the coast of Krk. In Split’s waters are even more interesting wrecks. Along the island of Mali Barjak there is a sunken cargo ship, “Teti” The ship is in an upright position and is a frequent motive for photography. The minelayer “Ursus”, which had dragged the floating artillery pontoon, was hit by a British submarine in 1941. near Hvar. At an ideal depth along the coast of Pelješac, is the wreck of the German torpedo boat S-57, which is considered one of the most attractive shipwrecks for underwater safari. In Dubrovnik waters there are also numerous wrecks, and underwater walls and reefs.

“Princess of the Adriatic” – a chain of nautical centers The project “Princess of the Adriatic”, worth 180 million euros, was presented recently in Dubrovnik, and has anticipated the construction of seven nautical centers on the Adriatic islands in the next seven years. Investors are interested in the construction of maritime centers in Port Šipanska, in Mljet’s Polače within the National park, in the harbor Jurjeva or Kremena on Lastovo, at the shipyard Inkobrod, the Island Badija in Korčula, Olib, Vrgadi and Kaprij. As the carrier of the initial phase of the project a company named “Princess of the Adriatic” was formed for this purpose. The nautical centers would encorporate marinas of lower capacity, up to to 200 berths, and numerous other facilities. A cooperation with the airports of Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik is planned, to better the air connection by the usage of hidroplanes. Holders of the project say it is not a classical type of marine, but a nautical center with a developing character, whose task is not to serve as a “shopping center” to guests and sailors, but with various offers keep the guests at their destination for as long as possible.
