Bihar is intimately linked to the Buddha’s life, resulting in a trail of pilgrimages which have come to be known as the Buddhist circuit.

The trail begins at the capital city, Patna, where a museum contains a collection of Hindu and Buddhist sculptures as well as a terracotta urn said to contain the ashes of Lord Buddha.

This landlocked State of Bihar is surrounded by Nepal, Bengal, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

Rivers Kosi and Gandak from the north and Sone from the south, join the Ganga.

Bodhgaya, located in Bihar, is one of the most important and sacred Buddhist pilgrimage center in the world.

Mahabodhi Temple:

Bodhi Tree:

Chankramana:

The temple stands east to the Bodhi Tree and has superb architecture. Its basement rises in the form of a slender Pyramid till it reaches its neck, which is cylindrical in shape. The total height of the temple is 170 feet. On top of the temple are Chatras, which symbolize sovereignty of religion. Four towers rise gracefully giving the holy structure a poised balance.

The present Bodhi Tree is probably the fifth succession of the original tree under which the Buddha had attained enlightenment. Vajrasana, the seat of stability, is a stone platform on which the Buddha is supposed to have sat in meditation gazing east, under the Bodhi tree.

This marks the sacred spot of the Buddha's meditative perambulations during the third week after pious enlightenment. It is believed that wherever the Buddha put his feet lotus sprang up.
