PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Families & School Community,

With three weeks to go before the end of the year, we are busy celebrating the achievements of our students and staff.

Recently, students in our Supported Learning Centre participated in a number of sporting events. In particular: the SSSA Boccia Carnival and a number of programs during PE week. There is more information about these events in this newsletter. I mention this because 11 of our SLC students currently in year 12, have now proudly graduated from Henley High School. They all attended a formal dinner two weeks ago at the Lakes Resort where their achievements over the past 5 years were celebrated (thank you to a number of sponsors who ensured all students could participate in this special event). Congratulations to them all – and their parents and our staff. All are enthusiastic about their post school pathways – if not a little nervous. It has been an outstanding achievement.

At the beginning of last week we celebrated the achievements of all of our sportspersons. Once again we appreciate the support of our 11 sporting associations. In addition, Brodie Smith, AFL Footballer with the Adelaide Crows was installed in our Hall of Fame.

Congratulation to Tim Kloeden (who has accepted the Principal position at Edward John Eyre High School in Whyalla), Mike Sadlier (who has accepted the Principal Position at Tintinara Area School) and Paul Thomas (who has accepted a Development Coaching Position with the Adelaide Crows). We appreciate the contribution of all of these staff to Henley High School and wish them well in their new careers. Kim Twaddle will be remaining in Whyalla with Tim and we congratulate both on the arrival of the new addition to their family.

Megan Cooper has also recently celebrated the birth of a new family member!

We held our final Governing Council meeting last Wednesday. Thank you to our counsellors who have supported both myself and the school during 2015. A special thank you to Karen Gilbert who has been a regular attendee and contributor for the past 5 years.

Finally, I am pleased to announce our 2016 Prefects and Student Executive members.

SLC STUDENTS PREFORM HIP-HOP ROUTINE AT SLC ASSEMBLYOn Friday 6th November, students from the Supported Learning Centre performed their Hip-Hop routine, “Whip Nae Nae by Silento,” to a lively audience, which included other SLC Students, Staff and the year 10 Dance class, at the SLC assembly.

This term the students have been learning about Hip-Hop Culture. The ethos of Hip-Hop culture is Peace, Love, Unity and Fun; it is about bringing the community together.

The students absolutely smashed their routine, the audience were positive and very supportive; fun was had by all.

The students learnt their routine in two weeks and were able to perform it with so much ‘swag,’ energy and attitude.

It was an inspiring performance and look out because there will be many more to come!!!!

THE ICE FACTOR PROGRAM The Henley High School Ice Hockey Team (The Dingoes) consisting of all Indigenous Australian students have been catching the bus to the Ice Arena every Thursday to take part in the Ice Factor Program this term. The Ice Factor Program teaches students basic Ice Hockey skills and at the end of each term the students play in the Challenge Cup against 17 other schools. More so than the sport itself the program provides opportunities for the students to develop their organisation, team work, confidence and sportsmanship as well as community involvement in their development to become lifelong local and global citizens. They have been learning to ice skate for the past month and last Thursday had a presentation to receive their Ice Hockey gear. The hockey gear was presented by their sponsors who have made a huge contribution to the students. It was an exciting day and something the students should feel proud about! The team stood up and thanked their sponsors providing them with certificates and flowers to show their appreciation. They spent time writing their own thank you speeches to each individual sponsor, coach and mentor. The team are designing their own jersey (lead by Deacon Braun) and will play their first games at the challenge cup in week 8.

UNISA CONNECT TO ENGINEERING WEEKDuring our time at the UniSA Mawson Lakes Campus, we were able to get involved in Engineering Week. It was a truly incredible experience, made possible through the collaboration between the UniSA students and the schools’ teachers. Throughout the week, we were able to see through the eyes of civil, electrical, mechatronic, and mechanical engineering students.

ELECTRONICS CODING AND 3D PRINTING

There were many group activities that we participated in throughout the week, including measuring and mixing concrete, creating an electronic circuit which controlled a game, and programming and competing with robots.

Aside from these, the main activity of the week was to create the most efficient windmill to pump a certain amount of water. This activity incorporated each different area of engineering into one activity. We had to test different blade sizes and see what combination of blades spun the windmill the most efficiently, and construct the frame of the windmill ourselves. We then used a wind tunnel to test every groups’ windmills. After they were tested, we had a presentation ceremony where every group talked about their experiences during the week and different teams were awarded prizes for different aspects of the week.

By doing these activities, it not only improved our understanding of each area of engineering, it also helped us develop our STEM understanding, communication, team working skills, and most importantly, our problem solving skills, something they stressed were what made engineers ‘engineers’. We also created friendships with students from other schools, and it was a great experience to help us decide whether engineering was the career pathway for us.

Sahara Boniface and Wei TehStudents

A group of 17 Year 10 and 11 students were involved in an Inquiry Based Learning Activity at UniSA – Mawson Lakes on 23rd September.

They took part in developing skills in TinkerCAD, 3D Printing and Arduino Programming to integrate a working solution.

Students were presented with a real-life task of developing a country railway crossing with a boom gate and audio-visual outputs. Within the task students produced a light post using online CAD software which was then 3D printed using Makerbot printers. Lecturers introduced the basic concept of using Code and how computers process information. L.E.D.’s and an RC servo equipment was used to simulate lights and a boom gate and programmed this to operate in a realistic manner. The train would go over a magnetic sensor which was programmed to activate a series of actions via code. The alternately flashing L.E.D.’s were triggered first, signalling that a train was approaching followed by the boom gate which lowered. This carried on for a certain amount of time allowing for the train to pass before the gate and the lights returned to their previous state.

At the end of the day students from different groups had the opportunity to examine what their classmates had come up with, allowing them to learn from each other. We would like to thank UniSA – Mawson Lakes for this learning experience.

SSSSA BOCCIA CARNIVAL FOR ATHLETES WITH A DISABILITYOn Thursday, 12th November the Supported Learning Centre (SLC) and Sport and Recreation students took part in the SSSSA Boccia carnival for ‘athletes with a disability.’ This event was held at the Netball SA Stadium where 20 teams from 7 different schools participated in a competitive carnival. The SLC was represented extremely well with 25 students split into 5 teams. Congratulations to the Henley High School SLC Team 5 for being champions and the overall winner. We are also very proud of the Henley High School SLC Team 1 who finished runner up and the Henley High School SLC Team 3 who finished in fourth position. At the presentation, the captain of the winning team received a plaque and all the players were proud to receive their medals. Their hard work paid off and they accomplished a great feat.

A big thank you to the Sport and Recreation students for not only umpiring matches during the day but also mentoring and coaching their peers from the SLC.

Looking around on the day, we were reminded once again on how well our SLC and Sport and Recreation students interacted positively with each other and developed respectful relationships through sport.

The Success for All Program is an excellent way to bring students together in a relaxed environment that will build networks and friendships.

Every student enjoyed their time in 2015 and takes home with them very fond memories of another successful chapter in the Success for All Program.

Being the final event, we would like to thank the SLC and PE staff who contributed their time and expertise and look forward to another successful year in 2016.

AUSTRALIAN DANCE THEATRE WORKSHOP WITH SSP DANCE STUDENTS

YR 10 BOYS BASKETBALL - STATE CHAMPIONSOn Thursday 12th November, the Year 10 Boys Basketball team competed against the top 6 schools in the State. The boys played 3 minor round games to register places to go into the semi final cross-overs. The boys had strong wins against Encounter Lutheran College, Tenison Woods College and Blackwood High School, finishing the minor round as the top ranked team who would then face the fourth ranked team Encounter in the semi. On the other side of the draw Trinity College played Sacred Heart College for the other spot in the Grand Final.

The Henley boys once again accounted for Encounter to set up what would be an exciting showdown against the defending champions Trinity College.

In the final Henley broke away to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter, throughout the second two quarters Trinity chipped away at our lead to hit the front in the final minute of the 3rd quarter. The last quarter was an arm wrestle with both teams finding it hard to score freely, fatigue became a factor with the boys playing their 5th game for the day.

With only minutes to go nothing would separate the two teams.

As the clock ran down Henley hit the front with seconds remaining, Trinity had a moment to equalise. With their shot tightly defended by our boys the siren went and Henley were victorious by a solitary point 44-43.

Henley High School is the best state school for basketball in 2015. The following results are where all of the team finished this year in the KO competition. This is the first year that all teams have made the finals for the pool A competitions.

In week 3 the Australian Dance Theatre ran a workshop at Henley High School with our Specialist Sport Dance students. During the workshop students participated in fitness and conditioning, contemporary dance and breakdance technique. Students also learnt repertoire from the company’s production Proximity. The workshop finished with students creating their own choreography and speaking with the company about the professional dance industry. It was an excellent experience for all of our elite dancers.

ADELAIDE MINI MAKER FAIRE

CONCEPT2CREATION EXPOHenley High School participated in a range of projects this year in collaboration with Concept2Creation, projects included the Power & Sustainability, SWAT and Cruze Build challenges. The culmination of this year’s work was to present these projects at the C2C expo. Henley High School previously competed on challenge day with the SWAT project and were required to present to a panel of industry experts on expo day. The students rose to the challenge and were able to talk about their projects and respond to questions asked in a professional manner. The c2c expo presented an opportunity for the Cruze Build students to compete against other schools, with Henley High School placing highly after a fast race time was recorded during the challenge. The event was attended by industry leaders, government representatives and a large range of competing schools. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by students and was a great opportunity for them to present their projects, establish industry links and to see what other schools have created.

The Adelaide Mini Maker Faire was held on Sunday November 1st at the Tonsley Innovation Hub with over 100 displays from community organisations, makers, businesses, schools and post-secondary institutions. Design and Technology faculty exhibit showcased student work and 3D printing as well as selling student made projects.

Over 5100 people came through the gates on the day and the general vibe by visitors was positive and of amazement at the level of skill and knowledge demonstrated by our students and their designed projects.

Students were able to meet and engage with makers, ask questions, and see old crafts and new technologies side by side. There was also opportunities for students to get hands on at workshops and listen to many world class speakers.

I would like to acknowledge and thank each of the following students who assisted in running our exhibit, Junjie Chan, Min Chan, Atrin Moghaddas and Alice Miller.

Recognition must also be given to The Design and Technology Staff for their support and contribution towards making our exhibit at The Adelaide Mini Maker Faire a great success.
