FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome back to term 4. I hope everyone had a good holiday. Term 4 will once again be a busy one so please be sure to look at the Term Planner in this newsletter. It is also the final term for our Year 6 students.
TERM 4 CALENDAR Please be sure to refer to the Term 4 Calendar at the end of this newsletter as there are some minor changes to the timing of end of year events.
10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY ART PROJECT – MOSAIC MURAL At the end of this year Hocking Primary School will have been in operation for 10 years. To celebrate this event the school, led by our amazing Art Specialist teacher, Miss Sveinbjornsson, has commissioned a mosaic mural which will be completed by all students during this term. You may have noticed the wall of the Early Childhood Building has been covered in preparation for the installation. The mural has been designed to reflect, through the eyes of our students, what has been achieved at Hocking Primary over the last 10 years.
During last term all students, during their Art lessons, designed the mural and made the clay tiles which will be used. This term they will continue this work and then assist with the installation.
In addition to the mural we are also planning a low key unveiling to celebrate 10 years which will occur during week 9 of this term. We are planning to invite all current school community members and past students and parents to the unveiling. Details will be communicated soon.
HOCKING PRIMARY SCHOOL ART EXHIBITION Due to the workload involved with the working on the 10 Year Anniversary Mosaic the school will not be holding an Art Exhibition this year. We will however be holding an event to unveil the mosaic during week 9 which will be open to all.
2018 STUDENT CLASS PLACEMENTS Any parent who feels they have important information about their child’s development - academic, social, emotional or behavioural, is invited to formally write to me (email: [email protected]) with details they feel should be considered when making class placements for 2018. Requests for specific teachers and placement with friends cannot be accommodated and therefore will not be considered. Once placements are made to classes for 2018 they will not be changed.
STUDENTS NOT RETURNING FOR 2018 It would be appreciated if parents could advise the school in writing if their children will not be attending Hocking PS in 2018. This will assist us with planning for the 2018 school year.

SWOOPING MAGPIES Magpies swoop to protect eggs and young from attack during the nesting season August to October. The website below has great advice and information on how to stay safe during the swooping season. H http://www.ehp.qld.gov.au/wildlife/livingwith/magpie_safe.html
DOGS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS For the safety of all concerned, dogs and humans, we ask that dogs not be brought onto the
school grounds. This means all dogs - big or small, on a lead or being carried, must not be brought onto school grounds. The school grounds includes the paths that surround the school; the southern boundary is Ranworth Rd. Children are attracted to dogs and may cause the dog to react in a way which is out of character. The school must report any incident to the
council for their follow up and action.
CITY OF WANNEROO MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS APPEAL 2017 Hocking Primary School is supporting the City of Wanneroo Mayor’s Christmas appeal. All donations received will be distributed to those less fortunate within our Community. Two bins will be located outside the Front Office from Week 2.
Donations can be toys (please ensure these are age appropriate) and non-perishable food items such as: Christmas cakes, fruit mince pies, biscuits, cakes, cake mixes, nuts, crackers, chips, pasta and sauce, tinned foods, jams, spreads, tea, coffee, sugar, cereal, rice, noodles, chocolates or muesli bars (Please check that these are not out of date). Please have donations to the school by Friday 17 November 2017. REMINDERS All skateboards, scooters and bikes are to be carried or wheeled to and from the bike racks where they must be secured for the day.
Protective safety equipment is encouraged at all times. Only use the designated Kiss ‘n Drive area to drop and collect students. School gates open at 8.15am. Students should arrive at 8.25am. If students arrive prior to this time they must sit outside the
Deputies’ Office. Four Square games are only to be played during recess and lunch time.

During 2017, Wayne has displayed the Pursuit of Personal Excellence value by working conscientiously towards personal goals with pride and perseverance. He respects everyone’s Individual Differences, readily accepting others as they are. These traits convey Wayne’s highly regarded reputation as a role model for many students in our school.

I THINK MY CHILD IS BEING BULLIED Over the next few months we will be taking a closer look at what parents can do if they think their child is being bullied. Topics will include:
Possible signs of bullying
Talking with your children about being bullied
Things parents can do if they think their child is being bullied at school
Helpful parent responses
What can I tell my child to do if he or she is bullied?
At school, what are children learning to do if they are bullied?
How can parents talk to their children about dealing with arguments?
Helping your children establish a support group
How can I help my child be assertive?
Possible signs of bullying All parents hope that their child will tell them as soon as there is a problem. But unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen. It may be because the child feels confused, they feel it is their own fault, or they are worried about how their parents will react.
The following list shows common signs of bullying: (Please note that many children may show these behaviours at times, but it may be a sign of bullying of you see these things happening often.)
Decreased interest in school;
Reluctance to go to school, absenteeism from school;
Poorer school performance;
Frequent complaints of headaches or stomach aches;
Wanting to be taken to and from school or to go a new route;
Frequent damage or loss of items such as clothing, property or school work;
Frequent injuries such as bruises or cuts;
Withdrawal and a reluctance to say why;
Difficulty sleeping, wetting the bed or having nightmares;
Coming home hungry;

HOCKING’S HEALTHY HARVEST As you may be aware, Hocking Primary School entered two displays in the 2017 IGA Perth Royal Show. Our first entry was 'Sally the Scarecrow' in the Sustainable Scarecrow competition and the second was a wheelbarrow of produce from our Hocking Healthy Harvest school garden in the School Grown Produce competition.
Our scarecrow was lovingly made by the students from LA7, Ms Squire and Mrs Kerry. The produce display was designed and created by students from LA15 with the creative help of Jacob, Jayden, Abbey, Mia, Mrs Janelle Perkins and Mr Bakreski. We are happy to report that the standard of both of our displays was very high, with 'Sally' receiving lots of positive feedback from the public and our produce display coming second overall. A big thank you must go out to everyone who supports the school garden by either volunteering their time or purchasing our produce. We look forward to your on-going support. Our sights are now set on the Wanneroo Agricultural Show where we will be once again entering the 'School Challenge'.
