JUNIOR EDITORIAL

Dear Parents,

There have been so

many highlights this week

but undoubtedly the

grandparents‟ event has

been the most fantastic

end to the week. We

hope to share some

wonderful photos with

you next week. A final

reminder that the staff

will be taking on the

parents netball team in a

match at approximately

3.15 p.m. on Thursday

afternoon next week.

We do hope that you will

come along, cheer for

the staff, buy lots of

cakes (see below) and

raise lots of money for

Sport Relief.

On Friday 23rd(Sport

Relief Day) we shall be in

RED MUFTI and we would

be grateful if your

daughter could

contribute £1.00 to wear

Red – all proceeds will be

going to Sport Relief. If

you are very welcome to

join your daughters that

afternoon when we all

walk to the seafront and

if you are interested in

coming along, please let

the office know.

Sian Cattaneo

„Phil the Bag‟

Well done to all those of you

who brought so many clothes,

shoes and other textiles in for

our „Phil the bag‟ collection last

week. We collected an

incredible number of bags and

Year 2 really enjoyed helping

get them all loaded onto the

big lorry.

Year 3 visited Al-Quds

Mosque

Year 3 enjoyed a beautiful

Spring day‟s walk to and from

Al-Quds Mosque on Thursday.

The visit enhanced their

understanding of Islam which

they have been studying this

term, as part of Their Africa

topic. They listened very

attentively to a talk by

Mohamed Toulba, who

explained all about the

Mosque and the Muslim

religion. He read to us all from

the Qur‟an and demonstrated

the call to worship which had

the girls enthralled! The girls

learnt a great deal and asked

some well thought out

questions.

Waste Week

This past week we have been

participating in the national

Waste Week run by the Eco

organisation „The Pod‟.

The week started with an

assembly when Mrs. Cattaneo

talked about several different

aspects of waste disposal, such

as composting and recycling.

She focused mainly on the issue

of food waste, as this is a major

issue both on a local and

global scale. We throw away

7.2 million tonnes of food every

year in the UK and we want to

reduce the amount we waste

in school. The girls were told

that good food going to waste

either is not the only problem;

wasting food wastes money,

and has serious environmental

implications too. If we all stop

wasting food that could have

been eaten, the CO2 impact

would be the equivalent of

taking 1 in 5 cars off the road.

The girls were asked to think

carefully about asking for

portions that they could

manage, and about not

putting more salad than they

could eat on their plates. They

were encouraged to try to finish

their food. On Thursday every

girl who finished all her food

was given a special sticker. The

girls also made promises for

Waste Week, which will be

displayed near the pupils‟

entrance.

“Just Different” workshop

Year 4 have been learning

about disability in our PHSE

lessons this term and on

Monday we had a visit from

Alison who works for the charity

“Just Different”. It was amazing

to see how she is deals with

everyday tasks, using her feet

and mouth to put on socks for

example. We had a go at

writing our names with our feet

and mouth and putting our

socks on using just our feet and

found it a real challenge! It

made us all revise our thinking

about disability.

Nursery News

It was a morning of keep fit

activities for the Nursery girls on

Thursday and everyone really

enjoyed themselves. We had a

50 minute activity session with

Socatots, a physical play

programme for pre-school

children led by Marianne and

Fiona. They arrived with an

array of colourful apparatus

and taught a number of skills

such as „sole control‟ and

being a goalie using an

enormous lightweight ball –

which caused much delight!

The organisers were very

impressed with the girls. They

said they were envious of us

working with such a great

group of girls who were so

enthusiastic and eager to have

a go at every activity. Watch

out – we definitely have a

Brighton and Hove under-5s

soccer team in the making!!

Special congratulations must go to Almi Nerurkar who

finished first in the girls U11’s race, Abi Roach-Penn who

finished second and Lola Baker, who finished third. Not

only was Almi the first girl to finish she came 4th overall

in a field of over 75 runners with an amazing time of

10.48.

All of our girls ran fantastically well and we are extremely

proud that our girls showed great support and

sportsmanship towards one another.

Congratulations to all 12 runners who competed in the U11’s Prep schools cross country race held at Lancing College on

Wednesday. For some of the girls it was their first competitive cross country run. It was a challenging run, with both

boys and girls running together for places in the girls U 11 race, boys U 11 race and placing in the mixed team race.

B.H.H.S. Fashion Show 2012 =

The highlight of last week was the annual

Fashion Show- an event planned and managed by the Sixth Form. Sophie Hayes and Alex Southern did an amazing job of coordinating the whole event and were excellent compares for the evening which raised an amazing total of over £2300 for Have a Heart, the Katie Piper Foundation and Oxfam. The event took place on International Women’s Day and was a real reflection of what women can achieve.

The whole school worked together with over 180 models from Year 7 up to Year 13 showcasing clothes from stores in Brighton. The staff too strutted their stuff with Mrs Duggleby, Mrs Mashford, Miss Fox, Mrs Oliver, Miss James and Miss Davies modelling clothes from Kew 159. The grand finale was a real showstopper as the beautiful dresses from Bride in Hassocks were modelled by masked Sixth Form girls.

The Sixth Form put in a tremendous amount of effort into planning the event and it really did prove to be a night to remember. Well done to everyone involved! Miss Fox

Mr Edmunds showed his skill as an auctioneer and succeeded in raising lots of money during the interval in the auction with his glamorous assistants, Mrs Manning and Mrs Cantrell. Special thanks also go to Miss James for the choreography and to Mrs Butt and Dr Shah from the Parents’ Association for helping with the refreshments.

ECO NEWS

Next Thursday, 22nd March, is International World Water Day.

The Junior School will be marking this very important event with an assembly on Wednesday, when we will be watching a short film called ‘Turn on the Tap’.

The girls will learn about how lots of people around the world do not have clean drinking water or adequate sanitation.

On Thursday each class will have a small empty plastic water bottle and we will be asking the girls to try to fill them with small coins – coppers and five pence pieces.

The message that we hope to give them is that any contributions, however small, add up and can make a significant difference to the lives of others.

If we raise £9.00 we will be able pay to train a villager in Mozambique to maintain the community well or borehole. £36.00 will provide a family in Niger with a latrine and £48.00 would provide a family in Uganda with a biosand water filter.

We would be very proud to raise the money for any of these projects and we hope you will support us by saving your small coins and sending them in with your daughter on Thursday.

And to add a maths angle to this event for our maths week, each class will be able to estimate the amount in their bottle and there will be a small prize in each class for the closest estimate.
