Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
Y10 West Midlands County SFA Cup Winners - A huge well done to our Year 10 boys football team.
Following a very busy week preparing for and sitting their English Language GCSE exams the team were competing in
the West Midlands Schoolboys Football Association cup final on a very wet and cold Saturday morning. We were
playing against a strong Bishop Ullathorne team but I am delighted to report that we lifted the trophy winning 2-1 in
normal time, after a great team effort. This is an amazing achievement as the competition is open to teams from
across the West Midlands. Good luck to both our Year 9 and 10 football teams who are in the Coventry Cup Finals
and we will share arrangements once details have been confirmed.
Exams - Most of the GCSE and A Level examinations have now been completed and Year 11 and 13 are on study
leave. We hope and pray that all their hard work will be rewarded on results days in August. Year 11 are now
looking forward to their Year 11 Prom and Year 13 to their Leavers’ Ball on Friday 28 June. If Year 11 parents
would like to donate any items of school uniform that are no longer required, we would be very pleased to receive
them. They can be handed in to reception.
Assessment Weeks - All parents are aware that students in Years 7 –10 and Year 12 will be completing important
assessments over the next few weeks. Students have been revising hard for these assessments and been using the
Assessment Booklets to help them revise the key topics. Copies of the assessment booklets are available on the
home page of the school website. The booklets also contain the assessment timetable so parents will be able to see
what exams students are taking and when. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions or
concerns regarding the assessments.
Big Sleep Out - When we were planning the Big Sleep Out we thought we would have it in June so we would not
need to rearrange due to poor weather conditions. Unfortunately there has been so much rain over the last week
that parts of the school site have been flooded. As a result we have decided to postpone the Big Sleep Out until
Friday 5 July! Hopefully this means that more students and staff will be able to participate in the Big Sleep Out and
support the homeless. We are very lucky that we can choose not to sleep out in adverse weather conditions and I
am very conscious that this is not a choice that homeless people have. I hope that more students will take part in the
Big Sleep Out and well done to the students who have already handed in sponsorship money! Well done also to Year
8 who are collecting toiletries for the homeless following an assembly from Ann Hawker, who works at the Homeless
Centre in Coventry. This week they are collecting men’s deodorants and your support would be much appreciated.
Aerosols Can Reminder– A reminder to parents and students that aerosol cans are not permitted in school. Any
student who is found in possession of an aerosol can will have it confiscated. Parents will need to collect these from
student reception.
I hope you have a great week, best wishes, Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Year 10 - West Midlands Champions
On Saturday 8th June, the Year 10 football team competed in the final of the West Midlands County
SFA Cup. On a very wet and windy morning, the 16 players arrived early at Cryfield Pavilion,
Warwick University to face another Coventry side, Bishop Ullathorne.
The match started at a very high pace in tough conditions with Newman taking early control and
creating numerous chances. After 10 minutes, they found themselves 1-0 up after striker Alex
Davies capitalised on a defensive error from Ullathorne - another goal to add to his impressive tally for the season.
Ullathorne were not without chances of their own and after 30 minutes they managed to equalise through a brilliant counter attack that the
Newman defence could do little about. The half time score was 1-1.
The second half started much the same as the first, with Newman looking to take an early advantage. As the half progressed both teams
were trying to find the crucial winning goal and had a wide range of opportunities, but were unable to break the deadlock. However, with
two minutes remaining, midfielder Bradley Stretton broke into the Ullathorne box, beating 3 defenders on a great run before finishing off
brilliantly to make the final score 2-1 to Cardinal Newman.
This has been an incredible season for the Year 10 side, who have won every match they have played since their one and only defeat to
President Kennedy in September. They have beaten the best teams from around the Midlands en route to the final and after a highly stressful
week with their GCSE English Language exam, they managed to end the week as West Midlands
champions. A truly remarkable achievement and a testament to their fierce commitment and
dedication.
They will now compete in the final of the Coventry Telegraph Schools Cup, their last match of the
season, against Cardinal Wiseman. Details regarding this match will follow soon and we would like
to invite as many parents and staff as possible to attend and support the players once more.

Cardinal Newman Catholic School - Year 10
It has been 9 years since Cardinal Newman boys have lifted the West Midlands Schools’ Football trophy, but a win on
Saturday 8th June against another Coventry school, Bishop Ullathorne, saw them proudly clinch the trophy.
The boys, led by team manager Mr Joe McLintock, are a well organised group of players, who play regularly together,
with good humour and a fierce determination. They are real role models to our younger students here at Cardinal
Newman, who all look up to them. Captain Ciaran Whelan led his team in very difficult weather conditions on Saturday morning. Ciaran is
an inspiring young man and a great ambassador when representing the school. Defeat was not going to be an option in his or the other boys’
minds and goals from Alex Davies and Bradley Stretton saw them beat Bishop Ullathorne with a 2-1 victory. Well done to our newest West
Midlands Schools’ Football champions!
It was also a win win day for Coventry as Cardinal Newman faced Bishop Ullathorne in the Year 10 final and Caludon Castle faced Bishop
Ullathorne in the Under 16 final. Real acclaim for our great city in this Year of Sport!
Coventry schools’ finals are looming ever closer, with the Year 9 and 10 Cardinal Newman boys’ teams making both finals.
Maybe the double is on the cards for our Year 10 boys!

Weekly Prayer
Father, stay with us and care for us
so that we will always be united to
You. May we walk with you daily and desire to
spend refreshing times in your presence. Keep us
safe from evil and close to the Holy Spirit. Sanctify
us in the truth of your word and may we never
doubt your love for us. We pray to be continually
amazed by your desire to guide us always and
constantly stand in awe of your glory. These things
we ask in Christ’s name. Amen
