From the Principal Dear Parents,

I should like to thank you all for the huge support you have given both the school and I over the past year.

Back in November, the school achieved the accolade of Outstanding in both our Ofsted and SIAS inspections. I thank so many parents for their positive comments to the inspection teams.

Since February when we embarked on a feasibility study in relation to the school pursuing Academy Status, so many parents expressed such positive support and others asked some pertinent and challenging questions of myself and the Governing body.

I am pleased to tell you that in the July Governing Body meeting, and after months of deliberation, Governors passed a resolution to move the school to Academy Status. This is expected to take place from 1st September 2012. This is a time of great change for schools nationally and S. Peter’s Collegiate School is now well placed to move onwards and upwards both within the city and in conjunction with the Lichfield Diocese in supporting other schools as needs arise.

The parental support at the end of the term Summer Music Concert and Sports Presentation Evening was greatly appreciated. They were both magnificent occasions of celebration of successes of so many of our students.

I congratulate students on another magnificent year both on the academic front and in so many other activities which take place.

I am grateful to the staff for always ‘going the extra mile’ for our students. I also wish the staff listed below who are moving to other schools or retiring a happy and successful future.

S. Peter’s Collegiate School Summer Term Newsletter

July 2012

This year has been a busy one in the department. Over two days in late September early October we took the Year 9, 10 & 11 GCSE History students to the Imperial War Museum, London. We were ably supported by staff from many departments and also school governor, Mr Day. Thank you all for your support. Students were able to experience one of the best museums in the country, detailing the history of warfare. Year 10 & 11 students were also able to investigate the Holocaust exhibit held within the museum. This superb resource included many artefacts from the death camps and ghettos of World War II. Having to travel down to London meant we had a very early start and a late finish but due to the success of the visit it was well worth the effort.

In May we took the Year 7 students to visit Kenilworth Castle and despite the torrential rain on one of the days we had an excellent visit. The follow up work from Year 7 has been of a high standard.

In April we sent two of our Year 13 History A Level students to Auschwitz with the Lessons from Auschwitz Project. This moving and inspiring day visit can be reviewed via Josh Skidmore’s blog: http://joshramble.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/8-steps.html.

Finally, the department says a big thank you and goodbye to Mr Philip Williamson who has completed his Graduate Teaching Programme in our department. He has become a firm favourite with staff and students. In September, he will be joining the History Department at St Edmund’s and staying in touch by teaching our Year 12 students there next year.

The School Council held a meeting in July where all students where given the opportunity to discuss any issues, concerns, or give suggestions for the improvement of the school. It was a very busy session and it was encouraging to see so many students talking to School Council Committee members. Points raised will be discussed at the next School Council meeting with Senior Management.

A thletics News S. Peter's success at the English Schools’ Athletics Championships, were Amy Hillyard and Theodore

Reeve, both from Year 11,. They were selected to represent the West Midlands at the Gateshead International Stadium during the 6th-8th July and the event was televised live on Sky Sports.

After an impressive qualification, Amy ran the 300m in a time of 39.85 seconds, claiming a fantastic 2nd place. As a result of this, she will now go on to represent England in the Home Countries Schools' International Athletics Championship in Kent on July 21st. We wish her every success in this. Amy topped off her weekend with a bronze medal as an integral member of the West Midlands 4 x 100m relay team.

Theo put in an excellent performance and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final of the 100m, finishing 9th overall. His spirits were lifted however when he won a silver medal as part of the 4 x 100m relay team. Congratulations to both students, they are a credit to the school in both their achievements and attitude.

B lack Country School Games Congratulations to the Year 8 girls’ Athletics team who won bronze medals at the Black Country

School Games held at Aldersley Stadium on Friday 29th June.

Competing against the top schools from across Wolverhampton, Sandwell, Dudley and Walsall, they put in an excellent all-round team performance to gain a well deserved third place. Top individual performances came from Simone McKen with a winning throw and P.B. of over 10m in the shot putt and Ramaya Pearce who won the high jump with a jump of 1.35m.

Following an impressive opening ceremony, pupils had the chance to meet British Olympic Basketballer Dominique Allen and be photographed with the Olympic torch.

C ity Athletics Championships S. Peter's Athletics teams have had a very successful year, culminating in a vast number of

team and individual medals at the finals of the Wolverhampton Schools’ Athletics Championships at Aldersley Stadium. Overall, across Years 7-10 the girls’ team was runners up. The Year 9 girls’ team put in a fantastic team performance to win the City Championship with outstanding individual

performances from Molly Perkins and Bethany Harris.

Basketball

This year has been a very successful year again in basketball for the school.

We were crowned, yet again, Year 7 & 8 City Champions, Year 9 Champions and Year 10 Champions.

This was reward for all of the hard work and effort a number of students put into attending extra curricular clubs at lunch time and after school sessions. The school now has a fierce reputation for producing outstanding basketball teams across a number of age groups.

Congratulations to all the students who contributed to each year group.

In addition, Year 9 represented the City in the Black Country School Games at Wolverhampton University. They competed against the top teams from Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall and finished second, gaining a silver medal. Congratulations to: Dan Norman, Arjun Khatka, Louis Harper, George Smith, Jack Kriskinans, Tanaka Kungwengwe, Nathan Sharples, Josiah Davies, Jed Clarke.

Tennis

It has been another successful year for the school in Tennis this year: Congratulations to the following: Year 7 & 8 League Winners: Will Bailey, Will Betts, Danny Sandhu, Kirt Froster, Anand Memhi.

Senior League Winners: Jack Nelleny, Lawrence Wilson, Ben Gutteridge, George Chatham and Curtis Smith.

City Doubles Championships: Years 7 & 8: Runners-Up: Danny Sandu and Will Betts.

Years 9 & 10: Winners: James Duffy and Adrian Guest. Runners up: Paul Griffiths and Jack Kriskinans.

Football

The Year 10 football team have worked very hard over the last 2 years to become a team built on team work and endeavour. It has been a privilege to work with the group of players and to watch them grow into a good football team and a unit of friends playing for each other, making them very hard to beat.

Their performance this year has ensured that they qualify for the top division next year, which is an excellent achievement.

In addition to their achievements, three Year 10 individuals represented the school in the Wolverhampton Schools’ FA team. Congratulations to Louis Topham, Seni Raza and Jordan Jones.

Well done all, I have enjoyed running the team for the last two years and wish you all every success next year in contributing to the school 1st XI. Mr E Parry, P.E. Department.

R ounders The Year 10 rounders team has narrowly missed out on the City final after a tightly fought contest

in the semi-final against Wolverhampton Girls' High School Demonstrating a very high standard of fielding and composure, the S. Peter's team made it hard work for the Girls’ High to score despite some impressive batting. There were consistent and athletic catching from all members of the team, particularly Hannah Codner and Chloe Bull. Despite losing batters early in our innings, those remaining continued with determination and focus. Hannah Codner, Gemma Walters and Izzy Leadbeater scored some excellent rounders under pressure at crucial moments. It was a nerve racking finish and unfortunately S. Peter's fell just short by one rounder with the match ending 13 1/2 to 12 1/2 to Girls’ High. The whole team have shown significant progress over the season

Y ear 7 and 8 Cricket Year 7 made a promising start to secondary school cricket and showed real potential to be future City

Champions. They entered the 6-a-side and 11-a-side City Cups and reached the semi-finals in both competitions. In the 6-a-side semi-final they narrowly lost to NEW Academy in an indoor fixture and in the 11-a-side competition they narrowly lost to Highfields. They all represented the school exceptionally well and participated showing the best possible team spirit. Well done and best of luck for next year!

Year 8 continued to build on their success from last year by being unbeaten in the Wolverhampton Cricket League. They comfortably beat Colton Hills, Highfields, Ounsdale and St Edmund’s. As well as tasting the sweetness of success, the team suffered the bitterness of defeat, being knocked out of the City Cup semi-finals by NEW Academy in an indoor fixture. The team spirit shown by all of the lads, and lady, has been tremendous and it has been a privilege to work with them for the last two years. I am confident they will return stronger next year to defend their league title and regain their place in the city as Cup Champions.

T im Westwood Visit

Mr Tim Westwood, Wolverhampton City Council’s Assistant Director for Schools, Skills and Learning, asked to see the award winning peer mentoring scheme at the school and the nature and variety of work the Mentors have been doing.

This was a really exciting and fantastic opportunity for the Mentors to showcase their involvement in and out of school. The Mentors prepared and delivered a training session to newly recruited Year 8 students. The aim of the session was ‘What is Mentoring?’ Senior Mentors, Rebecca Tooms and Alisha Camm prepared a fifty minute training session with Year 9 Mentors, Luke Bennett, Odikachi Ezeah and Emma

Melendez. The Mentors made the session fun and entertaining by using blind folds to get across the message of leading and guiding mentees. A questions and answer session at the end gave the Year 8 students an opportunity to discuss any fears or concerns they had about mentoring. Mr Westwood commented how impressed he was with the session and the fantastic amount of mentoring work going on in S. Peter’s.

Principal, Mr. Richards, Geography Teacher, Mr Bruton, and Coordinator, Sunita Pallan-Jhalli, from Wolverhampton Peer Support, came along to support the Mentors and talk about the mentoring scheme in more detail with Mr Westwood.

When the school started up the mentoring scheme for lower school in 2006, Rebecca Roberts was one of the first applicants to be appointed. From that day forward, she has been a real asset to the mentoring team and one of the main contributors to the success of the scheme. It is with great pleasure and pride that there is a feature on Rebecca’s time as a Mentor. ‘I have been a Mentor since the programme started in 2006 and was one of the first mentors to be trained. I can honestly say that mentoring has made me the person I am today. It has helped me discover who I am and what I want to do in life. Whilst I have always enjoyed supporting people around me, it was through mentoring where I realised I wanted to pursue a career in Psychology. It gave me a sense of fulfilment and it was a way of giving back to the school after everything it had done for me. I was able to use my past experience of being a student to help and support Year 7 during their transition. All the Mentees I have supported have touched me in some way. My first Mentee was having problems at home and this was affecting her school work and the ability to make friends. We discussed strategies to help her talk through her concerns with her family and friends. I was able to improve her confidence and self esteem so much she auditioned for a part in a school production and got through. I see her around school now and I am so proud of the way she has developed and matured. Another Mentee was very upset because a close family member had cancer. This was affecting her school life and getting her down at home. As one of my closest friends had cancer I was able to relate to the pain she was feeling and offer her some comforting thoughts and words. Again, when I see her around school, she is smiling and seems more positive about things. In fact, she recently applied to become a Peer Mentor. I hate to see people upset, so the fact that I have been able to help so many people has been good for me to see the effect I have had on their life. My most poignant memories have been attending the Peer Mentor Residential which was the best residential I have ever been on! Also Mentors were treated to 10-pin bowling and pizza which was fantastic as it gave the opportunity for the Mentors to work together as a team. Mentoring is something I will hold dear to my heart and treasure for the rest of my life.

It has been an incredibly busy year for the Business Department. Here are just a sample of events and activities.

YEAR 12 ACCA BUSINESS MANAGEMENT COMPETITION During the last term, some of our Year 12 students comprising AS Economics, Business and Applied Business students, competed in a Sixth Form Business Management Challenge at Aston University against eleven other schools. The aim of the challenge was to set up and manage an Olympic themed event. The students were required to budget, plan, brand and increase revenue, along with other tasks. We finished 3rd and 9th. Well done to everyone who took part.

YEAR 12 CIPFA 6th FORM MANAGEMENT COMPETITION Six Year 12 students recently attended the University of Wolverhampton, where they took part in a Management Competition against five other schools from across the West Midlands. With each student having their own designated managerial role, the team had to partake in a range of tasks in order to increase the revenue and student numbers at a university. Students had to attend board meetings, complete press releases, deal with angry MP’s and perform a presentation to name but a few.

BUSINESS STUDIES EVENTS

ENTERPRISE AT THE WOLVERHAMPTON CITY SHOW

Year 12 Business students took part in an inter class competition, where four teams pitched to a panel in

order to gain one stall at the City Show in West Park. The successful team sold home-made macaroons and cupcakes in competition with teams from other schools.

Forty Year 12 students visited London to attend a Business Entrepreneur Conference in Fulham.

However, it wasn’t all work. They visited Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden, Harrods, Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards Parade.

Five Year 12 students visited the Bank of

England, where they took part in a Current

Economics Affairs and Policy conference. They

heard from, and got to question; a member of

the currents Monetary

Policy Committee; a

member of the Institute

of Fiscal Studies; a senior

lecturer from the

University of Buckingham

and a chief examiner.

The University of Wolverhampton STEM Focus Group ran a

STEM Poster Competition for Year 8 students for National

Science and Engineering Week 2012. All members of Science

group 8y1 produced posters on this year’s theme of ‘Our World

In Motion’. It was a tough decision to choose amongst the 33

entries but three were selected to represent the school. We

received certificates earlier this term and feedback from the

judges that they were 'very impressed by the high standard' of

our entries. Well done to Simone Mcken, Megan Lincoln and

Joshua Stait!

WOLVERHAMPTON PEER SUPPORT AWARD RECOGNITION

Peer Mentors attended Wolverhampton Peer Support Network event on Monday 18th June. The event was held as recognition for the vital help and support young people provide to their peers.

As well as recognising the work of a number of peer supporters, who have worked across the city during the academic year, the event saw performances from young Wolverhampton people and an exclusive show from TV dance act ‘Antics’.

More than one hundred young people attended the event along with teachers, youth workers and their parents.

Mr Tim Westwood, Wolverhampton City Council’s Assistant Director for Schools, Skills and Learning presented awards along with sponsors from ASDAN, local charity Believe to Achieve and the Council’s Healthy Schools Team.

S. Peter’s School was presented with a plaque for their mentoring scheme in recognition of their outstanding contribution to peer support activities in the city.

Two students from the school, Stuart Glover and Samuel James are members of Peer Zone, which is the Network’s own group of young peer supporters. They gave a presentation of their work to the audience and were presented with vouchers as a thank you for their contribution to the City.

Councillor Phil Page, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools, Skills and Learning, said: “This is more evidence of the great work being carried out by young people in our city. “Wolverhampton Peer Support Network provides a hugely important service in schools across the city and it is very pleasing to see young people working to help fellow peers who might need this support.”

The Network’s Chair, Kevin Pace, Education Manager with the City Council’s Schools, Skills and Learning Directorate said: “Young People all over the City are seeking opportunities to support other young people who may be heading down similar paths as them, or experiencing similar problems. “National evidence has repeatedly shown that peer support can support strategies to address transi-tion, bullying, inclusion and achievement, including narrowing the gap.”

CONTAINER PLEA The Science Prep-Room staff are dedicated to the recycling of materials whenever possible. Many household containers can be used during our practical lessons and for general storage. Can we ask staff, students and parents to save the following items for us.

1 litre confectionery tins, especially the plastic ‘Celebrations’ tubs

Empty take-away containers and lids

Tubs used to hold bird-food etc.

These items can be left at reception or with the Science Technicians in the Prep-Room.

Lydia Jarvis in Year 8, plays cricket for

Worcestershire County Cricket Ladies U13

team and is proud to be their captain. She was

privileged, along with five other U13 girls, to be

invited to attend Lords Cricket ground for a

tour and professional coaching. The trip was

organised by The Lord Cobham Worcestershire

Youth Cricket Trust. Whilst there, they were

coached by James, an MCCC coach and Les

Bishop and also met England wicket keeper,

Sarah Taylor. It was a trip of a life time and

one they will always remember.

We wish Lydia luck in the future. with her

cricket.
