Construction of the Gatehouse is almost complete! The new building provides a more appealing first impression of Moss Creek for guests and potential home buyers. The electronics are in the process of being connected including the cameras, Capsure software, and the gate arm. We should be ready to begin using the new building about mid-July. Once the new facility is operating, the old Gatehouse will be demolished and the installation of the pavers will begin. The last step will be the new landscaping. We hope to have everything completed by Labor Day, weather permitting. Entry into and out of Moss Creek will be slower when the roadwork is underway, so please allow a few extra minutes and watch “This Week in the Creek” for announcements.

Thank you to the Members who responded to the Demographic Survey in June. The Master Plan Task Force (MPTF) is compiling and analyzing the results, as well as reviewing all the written comments. I will report on the survey findings in the August Advocate. In the meantime, and in response to the community trends McGladrey consultants shared with the Board in January, the task force has visited eight area communities and is compiling information about their waterfront development, casual dining facilities, fitness center facilities including equipment and programs, and other ways in which undeveloped common areas and open spaces can be better utilized by Members as an amenity. We will be providing more details to the Members at a fall meeting.

Occasionally, I am asked about the level of activity of golf, tennis, fitness, and dining at the Clubhouse. The Board has been tracking Member activity since the beginning of 2013 so now we not only have a summary of monthly and annual activity, but we have comparisons to the comparable month and year to date the previous year. We all know that we ex-perienced a colder winter which can be seen in the 20,453 year to date rounds of golf through May 2014 as compared to 21,463 rounds through May 2013. January 2014 had 2,118 fewer rounds of golf than January last year. We’ve also no-ticed that more Members are playing the South Course this year as the new greens are becoming softer and the Celebra-tion grass on the fairways has matured. Tennis usage is also down compared to 2013 due to a colder and wetter season. In May, 121 unique Members made 530 visits to play tennis. As the weather drove Members indoors, we saw an increase in the activity in the Fitness Center including class participation. In May, the Fitness Center saw 614 unique Members com-pared to 455 unique Members in May 2013. Year to date class participation is 1,621 as compared to 1,294 class partici-pants through May last year. Continuing with more good news, Members have finally discovered the great Sunday Brunch. Year to date, the Clubhouse has served just over 1,000 breakfasts compared to 455 through May 2013. Lunches are down year to date consistent with the lower rounds of golf, but the Clubhouse has served 6,117 dinners compared to 6,082 through May of last year. Banquet servings are down 880 so far this year because we are sensitive to closing the club to Members for outside events. Mackay’s Creek Grill that just opened for the season in May, served 346 meals in May vs. 296 last May. So overall, we are happy about the Member participation so far this year, despite the unseasonable weather.

We are now in the height of the boating season as Members use their boats to keep cool in the summer heat. In July, MCOA Administration will begin the mid-year review of boat usage in the wet and dry boat slips to determine if unused boat slips or slips for rarely used boats should be reassigned. We have a number of Members with boats who are waiting for a boat slip to become available. The audit will also check to make sure we have a current registration and proof of in-surance for every boat which is assigned a wet or dry slip. Beginning in 2015, we will also be asking for a copy of the boat owner’s drivers license since priority is given to full-time residents with a boat over part-time residents with a boat. Security checks the boat docks daily and each week records whether a boat is or is not in each wet slip. Under the MCOA Rules and Regulations, “MCOA reserves the right to reassign a slip that remains unoccupied more than six months total during the year.” Likewise, the Rules and Regulations also state “the boat docks are not intended to serve as a ‘storage facility’ for boats that are operated rarely or boats that are not seaworthy.” Members not in compliance with any of the Rules and Regulations will be notified by letter. If your use of a wet or dry slip has changed, please let Administration know so the slip can be reassigned to a Member on the waiting list.

At the end of March, MCOA Administration and several Board Members had a meeting with a group of residents of Stable Gate. Based upon feedback obtained during that meeting, the MCOA Board created the Stable Gate Task Force in April to look at how the Stable Gate Pool and other common areas could be improved. A survey was distributed to all Stable Gate owners in April. Just over 50% of the survey respondents said they enjoy using the Stable Gate pool, and more re-sponded that they would use the pool if it was improved. As a result, the Stable Gate Task Force met both in May and June and implementation of some of the recommendations has begun. The minutes from the Stable Gate Task Force meetings are posted on the MCOA website and can be found at www.mosscreek-hiltonhead.com, under the Membership tab, Board & Committees, Documents.

Rally For the Cure: Golf Tournament, Raffle, Silent Auction, & Dinner

Sunday, October 5, 2014 Our Rally raises money for breast cancer programs through Susan G. Komen. All of our fundraising dollars will remain local through the Komen Affiliate Network. If you are not playing golf, please join us for the Dinner and Silent Auction. There are many opportunities for volunteering before and during this event. Volunteers do not need to be golf-ers. It is a wonderful way to meet fellow Moss Creekers and be part of this worthwhile event. If you are inter-ested, please contact Mary Jane Reeves at 836-3355. Also, Silent Auction items are needed. In the past, art, jewelry, photography, cooking skills, boat cruises, etc. have been donated. Please contact Pat Coghlan at 837-5414 if you would like to make a donation. TEE BOX / HOLE SPONSORSHIPS If you would be interested in purchasing a sponsorship to honor, or in memory of, someone special, please con-tact Debbie Hengemuhle ([email protected] / 836-2476) or Shirley Finn ([email protected] / 774-571-7900). Tee Box sponsorships are $50 and Hole sponsorships (one per hole) are $150. Proceeds remain in our Commu-nity. Deadline for ordering is August 15th.

MCOA Kayak Loaners

Moss Creek purchased 2 doubles and 4 single kayaks for Members and guests to borrow. MCOA also provides life jackets and paddles for these boats (upon availability). Contact the Fitness Center (836-6160) for infor-mation or to reserve the boats (can reserve 2 weeks in advance). Everyone must check in at the Fitness Center and sign a waiver of liability before heading out on the water. Please use the kayak carts located along the kayak storage area to transport kayaks to and from landing. Do not drag the kayaks, as this will destroy the bottoms of the boats. Thank you!

2015 Board Candidates The Nominating Committee has selected the following nominees for this year’s MCOA Board election. Three nomi-nees will be on the ballot as candidates for the three vacancies on the 2015 Board of Directors: Barry Burgoyne, Diane Dahl and Katy Doran. The committee spent a significant amount of time contacting potential candidates and subsequently interviewed those Members interested in pursuing a position on the Board of Directors.

The Committee based candidate selections on a number of factors including background, involvement in Moss Creek activities and committees, and length of time living in Moss Creek. Additionally, another important factor was whether the person was willing to commit the necessary time and effort to perform Board duties.

This year’s Nominating Committee Members: Paul Juenger, chair; Jack Braun, Deborah Deignan, Patti Merritt, Gary Moore, Paul Schulz and Graham Silcox express their appreciation to all the candidates who participated this year.

The Committee would also like to remind all Members of MCOA that in accordance with Article IV, Section 1 of our By-laws, that additional nominations can be made by petition to the Nominating Committee and signed by 50 or more voting Members of the Association. Petitions must be filed with the Nominating Committee as soon as possible, or at the latest Tuesday, July 15, 2014.

On Tuesday, September 23, at 6:00pm, come by the Clubhouse and “meet the candidates” who will be on the ballot for the October election. Each candidate will have the opportunity to discuss their position along with a short question and answer session.

Results will be announced at the MCOA Special Meeting on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at 6:00pm at the Moss Creek Clubhouse. Those elected will take office on January 1, 2015. The three positions to be filled are currently held by Jan Alpert, David Neff and Jim Vogel whose terms expire December 31, 2014. We thank them for their outstanding service to the Community.

My formative years were spent in Upstate New York, Massachusetts, and Ohio where I attended Lenox School (MA), Mount Union College (OH), and Schoolcraft College (MI) majoring in Business Administration. I also served two years in the US Army during the Vietnam conflict monitoring the Southern Command Military Assistance Program.

Following my Army tour of duty, I met my wife Sandy; we married in 1969, raised two great kids, and managed ten corpo-rate relocations before settling in Moss Creek.

The first ten years of my working career was spent in sales and sales management with Unilever in several locations in-cluding Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo, Detroit, and Unilever headquarters in New York City.

We moved to Grand Rapids, MI after being recruited by the Perrigo Company where I worked for twenty eight years in various sales and marketing capacities. I served as Vice President of Sales the last ten years of my career with responsi-bilities that included departmental P&L, sales training, manpower assessment and recruiting, customer partnering, and growth of overall sales. Perrigo is the world’s largest manufacturer of over the counter pharmaceutical consumer goods for the store brand industry. During my tenure the company grew its’ sales from twenty six million to well over one billion dollars.

We purchased our first Moss Creek property in 2007 and lived here part-time until we sold our primary home in Cincinnati in 2011. We now call Moss Creek home. Sandy and I actively enjoy golf, clubhouse activities including Trivia, and Monday Night Grillers. For the past seven years, I’ve worked with Hilton Head Habitat for Humanity and been involved with the Moss Creek Adopt-a-Highway Program for six years. I’m currently a three year member of the Architectural Review Board, co-chairing the Community Pride Committee for the second consecutive year, and served on the Green Committee in 2013. I have also marshaled the Heritage Golf Tournament for the past seven years, and recently joined the Hilton Head Senior Men’s Golf Association.

I enjoy taking an active role where possible and feel that my background fits well with this socially involved Community. Bottom line, Moss Creek is a good place to live and call “home.”

261 Moss Creek Drive

My husband Sean and I moved to South Carolina from New York City in 1996. We currently live at 261 Moss Creek Drive. Before moving to Moss Creek 8 years ago, we lived in Hilton Head Plantation part-time. Deciding to move to this area full-time we looked at many Communities and decided on Moss Creek. Its privacy, natural beauty, great golf courses, financial stability, and its reputation as a friendly place to live all factored into our decision to move here.

I earned a BA in Accounting from Pace University in New York City, and an MBA from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. Before moving to South Carolina, I enjoyed a 30 year business career in finance, management, financial systems design and consulting. I ended my career in NYC as a Management Consultant with Accenture.

Moving South I embarked on a new career along with Sean in the fast growing Senior Retirement industry. During the last ten years of my working life I had the privilege of working with seniors and their adult children as they struggled with the decision about where to spend their final years. I started as a Community Manager and progressed to Marketing Director, Special Assignment Manager to turn around underperforming properties and to Regional Manager overseeing the operations of up to 15 communities. It was a great ending to an already full and rewarding business career.

Living in Moss Creek has been wonderful. We have a busy and interesting life and have met many diverse, delightful and fun people. My Moss Creek life includes golfing with the Ladies Nine and serving on its Board for Public Relations/Communications from 2011 to 2013. I worked on the Committee for the 2012 Rally for the Cure and am the Chairperson for the 2014 Rally, Golf Tournament, Silent Auction and Dinner. Other Moss Creek activities include Gourmet Dining, the Marketing Advisory Committee for the MCOA Board for 2013 and 2014 and the Ravenous Readers Book Club from 2008 to the present day.

While not busy with Moss Creek activities, I have volunteered for Memory Matters from 2010 to 2013. I am also a mem-ber of the Heritage Library where I have spent many hours researching my family history. Before moving to Moss Creek, I served on the Homeowners Association Board at Mariners Point in Hilton Head Plantation.

I retired as Vice President and Senior Financial Advisor with BMO Harris Wealth Management in the Fall of 2012. With almost two decades of experience and 100 million in assets under management, I worked with individuals, businesses and non-profits to develop their long term financial and investment plans, and manage them on a day to day basis. Dur-ing the course of my career, I served on a number of boards and planning committees as an officer or board member.

Community involvement has always been an important part of my life and I have enjoyed volunteering at Bluffton Self Help on a regular basis.

At Moss Creek, I am an active participant in golf, fitness, book clubs and the Finance Committee.

Our capital improvement plan includes a project to reinforce the two causeways on Moss Creek Drive. Earlier this month we met on site with a structural engineer and a contractor, both of whom have experience with this type of work. The site inspec-tion reconfirmed the need for improvements to the causeways. Although we do not anticipate any construction work this year, you will see some activity later this summer as part of the engineering design process. We will have a contractor on site taking core samples to examine the composition of the subsurface material within the causeways. This is a preliminary step to help us determine the best and most cost effective way to design the improvements, and to enable the engineer to provide specifica-tions for the project. Once the design is complete we will request competitive bids. We plan to have an update of the scope and timing of the causeway improvements at a Special Meeting that is scheduled for October 23rd at 6:00 p.m. The Board set a later starting time for the meeting to accommodate attendance of working Members and achieve the largest turnout possible.

If you have been to the tennis facility in the past week or so you may have observed a survey crew in the area. The survey is being done to gather accurate, as built survey information for the tennis area and the maintenance area. We will use the sur-vey information in the update of the Master Plan, which is underway. We also need the accurate survey information as part of the planning process for possible improvements to the tennis facility that are currently being evaluated.

Speaking of surveys, we had a reasonably good response to the Membership survey we recently conducted via email to gather information for the Master Plan Task Force. As Ms. Alpert reports in her President’s Column this month, the committee is evaluating the responses and the Membership will be informed of the results in the August Advocate. We plan to use short surveys like this on a periodic basis to supplement the comprehensive member survey we do every three years. We believe that short surveys on specific subjects will help the Board and management gauge the preferences of the Membership in set-ting budgets and capital plans, and also will provide another way to measure our performance. The next survey, which will be emailed next week, will ask your input on our Clubhouse operation. I encourage you to respond.

Finally, the Community Pride Committee has completed inspections of residential properties, and has sent letters to more than 100 Moss Creek Members noting maintenance needs identified during the inspections. I’m sure that some residents are not pleased to receive a letter from the CPC, but the service provided by the volunteers on the committee is very valuable to the community overall. Having toured several area communities in recent weeks in search of a new home, it is striking how the lack of proper maintenance of even a few home sites can affect the impression a visitor gets of the quality of the entire commu-nity. For those who did receive a letter from the CPC, we appreciate your positive response to the maintenance needs identi-fied by the committee. Follow-up inspections will be conducted by the committee beginning thirty days from the date of the original notice.

Each year, Moss Creek holds a seminar to inform new Members and update existing Members about the hurricane evacuation process. Join us on Tuesday, July 8th at 3:30pm at the Clubhouse to learn the new route information and preparedness plan. This year’s Hurricane Seminar will be conducted by Deputy Director of Emergency Manage-ment, Capt. David Zeoli, who is also a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Deputy. I have heard Capt. Zeoli give many pres-entations and his is one that you would be glad that you attended. Capt. Zeoli will update us on what to expect as far as which

routes we can take from Moss Creek if we leave prior to and after a mandatory evacuation has been implemented. He will explain in detail how decisions are made to evacu-ate and the process in which private communities partici-pate. It is very important that all Moss Creek Members understand the importance to be prepared and leave early so Moss Creek Se-curity can keep Beaufort County informed of our current status and evacuate the area in time.

Contact Melissa at 836-6121 or [email protected] if you plan on attending.

The Advantage Tees that were built on the North during the first week of June will be sodded during the early part of July. We will try to do more during the year, but the rest of the tees will be done next winter or next summer. South Advantage Tees are ready for play. We hope that our Members enjoy the new tees. New plantings are being finished up near 5 North rest area and between 8 North green and 9 North tee. Amy Carn de-signed both beds for us and I think our Members will be happy with the outcome. We continue to improve and update, if nec-essary. Our beds on our golf courses and throughout the Community for all of our Members and their guests to enjoy.

Grounds & Golf Course News

Roadside pick-up of landscape debris that is done by Members (not contractors) can be placed on the edge of the road by your drive-way for easy access. Roadside debris should be placed curbside as close to your scheduled pick-up day as possible, but no later than 7:00am on your scheduled pick-up day. It may not be placed on common property, on the golf course, or vacant lots. Pick up begins Monday morning and runs through Thursday. Please check the website for your property’s scheduled day.

Yard Debris Reminder

• Make sure you're watering early in the morning to reduce evaporation (before 6 a.m. is best).

• Put a layer of mulch around your plants to retain moisture. A generous amount of 3 to 5 inches is best.

• If you use a hose and portable sprinkler, purchase a hose end timer to regulate your water use.

• Sweep your sidewalks and driveway rather than hosing them down.

• When you're washing your car, turn the hose off between rinses.

• Install a home irrigation system. Watering effi-ciently, and only when your plants and lawn need it, can save a great deal of water.

• Make sure your irrigation system has a rain sensor that shuts off the watering program when it rains. Also, check the alignment of sprinkler heads once a season to make sure you are not watering your sidewalk!

• When planning your lawn watering schedule, think longer, infrequent run times. Deep watering less often promotes good root growth.

• Know your soil type. Different types of soil have different watering needs.

• Raise the blade on your lawn mower. Closely cut grass requires more water.

• Don't fertilize during hot, dry weather—applying fertilizer can enhance drought problems. When you do feed your lawn and garden, use a slow-release fertilizer.

Summer is moving by quickly! We are busy planning for the fall season and with summer house cleaning. Inventory levels for both golf cart keys and face towels are very low due to Members taking them home. Please return them; both keys and towels can be left at the bag drop. Be sure to look ahead at the calendar of events so you can start planning to participate in the many upcoming events in the fall. The premiere Annual Mixed Member-Guest is being held October 9, 10 and 11 and invitations will be emailed to the Membership on Monday, August 4. Tournament chairs, Paul and Carmela Juenger, are already busy planning a great event for you and your guests. This event is a wonderful opportunity to spend three days of fun, golf, dining, drinks and a lot of laughs with your friends for a tremendous value. We hope you can join us! Junior Golf Clinics are being held weekly on Thursdays from 10:00-11:00am this summer. The clinic fee is $10.00 per junior. Please note, there will be no clinic on Thursday, July 3, as the Golf & Tennis Junior Camp will be in session. Other golf fun this summer includes our ‘Family Golf Nights’. This is a great opportunity for parents and/or grandpar-ents to bring juniors out for a complimentary hour of instruction and games (for both the juniors and adults) followed by playing a few holes on the course. After golf, you can enjoy dinner in the Clubhouse; juniors 18 years of age and under who participate in Family Golf Nights with an accompanied adult are served complimentary chicken fingers and fries. Join us for the upcoming Family Golf Nights on July 11 and August 1. Register for junior golf clinics and Family Golf Nights by calling the Golf Shop, 837-2231; sign-up sheets are also posted on the bulletin board by the Golf Shop. Moss Creek is participating in the local private club summer reciprocal program. This program is open to Activity Fee Members and all starting time arrangements must be made through the Professional Staff. Please note, several clubs do not allow cargo shorts and some clubs only allow certain types of payments. CLICK HERE for a complete list of participating clubs.

Now this is bad luck or maybe good depending how you look at it! It may be hard to see in the picture but there is golf ball lodged between the tree and the lightning protection wire. This is going to be a tough shot! Under Rule 24-2 (Immovable Obstruction) a player would receive relief by dropping a ball, without penalty, within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief.

Women’s Inter Club The Women’s Inter Club sign up sheet has been posted in the Tennis Center. This team is open to all ten-nis players in Moss Creek regardless of level. They play from September until Thanksgiving. It features six courts of matches and includes all levels. Women’s 6.5 Combo 65+ The Women’s 6.5 65 and Over team has finished their season and qualified for the State Championships in October to be held right here in Hilton Head. The team members include: Captain Nancy Holland, Co-Captain Dori Barnes, Randi Jones, Jan Daniel, Kathy Devereaux, Bobby Sue Earnhardt, Maureen Gardner, Jan Hailey, Gloria Taylor, Mary Ellen Kopf, Sue Waldron, Lynn Green, Joan Wilson, and Sheila Block. Congratulations to all the team members!

Recently, I was giving a lesson and we began discussing the player’s most

recent match. This student told me “We played well, but the opponents kept

beating us on the down the line shot.” As many of you have heard me say

before, “If you do not get beat down the line a time or two you’re not playing

the net correctly.” She agreed with me and then added more to the story

“Well, it was more than twice. They beat us down the line three times in the

match.” I stopped the student right there and asked if it was exactly three

times? The response was YES they remembered those three points exactly!

We stopped and talked about it for a few minutes and agreed that the aver-

age game was 6 points and the score was 6-4 6-3. This means there were

19 games with an average of 6 points that would give us 114 points mini-

mum. By now, you can probably see where I am going with this story. In

the grand scheme of the match, losing 3-4 points by being beat down the

line is just fine. Ultimately, those points are not the difference between win-

ning and losing. Where we need to focus on is closing the gap in the middle

and putting away the soft returns that float through the middle of the court.

Winning these points will offset the 3-4 points we lose down the line and lead

us to a winning score line.

Drink more, water that is. As the humidity increases, we can be covered in sweat just going to the mailbox. It’s easy to quickly become dehydrated spending any time outdoors. But it’s not just our thirst that increases. Do you find yourself craving a cold soda or sweet tea during a heat wave? Dehydration has been known to stimu-late sugar cravings. Replenishing our fluid levels not only flushes toxins, but also helps our muscles and or-gans work properly, which can curb sweet cravings. So, if you are like me, and you find the ice cream calling your name, try drinking a glass of water! Staying active in the summer heat is a balance of choosing the right activities and knowing our own limitations. Reducing heat exposure and staying hydrated will help keep us all in motion for a long time to come!

As the HEAT permeates down on the Low Country we are about to get very busy here at Moss Creek with friends and family flocking to partake in our wonderful amenities. By the time most of you read this Advocate article, the fun will have already started. There will have already been a MCTC 4th of July Round Robin, a Kid’s Night put on by our wonderful Melissa Sheire, a guided Kayak Trip, and an American themed dinner. Please do not fret, as there are still a myr-iad of events planned for July. We will start the festivities with our annual Junior Golf and Tennis Camp, which will run from June 30th thru July 3rd. I do so much grilling at home, that I’m always looking for differ-ent ways to add variety to grilled steaks, chicken, pork, or fish so it doesn’t seem like the same ole same ole. I’ll bet you did-n’t know that happened to chefs too! The fact is, it usually comes down to time constraints. Just because I know how to make a delicious sauce by cooking veal bones for two days, doesn’t mean I have the time to do so. Condiments like this Mint-Macadamia Pesto can be made in advance, can be brushed on as a “finishing condiment” while the meats are still on the grill, and are very easy and time effi-cient to make, all of which add up to a very easy, yet delicious twist to your summer cookout. Feel free to experiment with the amount of citrus juice as well as the possibility of also using a hint of orange juice depending on the meat your are grilling. I like the lightness of the orange taste when using with chicken or fish. This pesto also finishes lamb chops very nicely as-is.
