I cannot believe that we are almost at the end of Term 1. It seems like only a few weeks ago we were still

coaxing our new little people into classrooms at the beginning of the day. Now our Kindy rooms are

bubbling with learning. I was even told by a student today, that she had named her Barbie doll

‘Mrs Getley’ – what wonderful imagination and insight into the inner soul.

Last week, our Year 3 and 5 students sat the NAPLAN on-line trial run. This was conducted to so that, as a

school, we can test the functionality of our resources before the real NAPLAN kicks in next term. I am

pleased to announce that all went well, everything worked, including the fickle wifi, and we are ready to

go. We have purchased 30 more Chrome books so that two groups can undertake the test

simultaneously. This will enable us to get through the program in a shorter time frame.

On this note, each Chrome book came with a laptop bag, which we do not need as we store and charge

them in a specially designed trolley. If you would like one of these bags, we are selling them for a $20

donation each. They are good quality HP brand and of course, never used. Please contact the office for

more information.

This week we start our Life Education lessons. This is the first time that the mobile van has come to us

for many years. There’s always a bit of excitement when we see Healthy Harold’s home camped in the

front yard. A timetable has been sent home to let you know when your child will be attending.

Our PBL and anti-bullying day was a bit hindered by the weather but we still managed to get through the

activities. The highlight was a whole school photo with the signed anti-bullying message - LEGENDS SAY

NO TO BULLYING. It was a bit tricky getting it all in, but creativity and determination won through in the

end. The key message for students was – be an upstander not a bystander, and use NO-GO-TELL. For

parents, we ask that you contact the school if you feel something is not quite right, so that inter-

vention can be put in place early.

Last newsletter, I put out a call for any receptacles you may have at home that have the potential to be

recycled and re-used into a plant container. Since then, we have had one response of a donation of some

tyres – thankyou to that person. So what do you have down the back of your property that is an ugly

duckling waiting to be transformed into a swan? Perhaps it’s the innards of an old washing machine or

dryer, or maybe a laundry sink, or a tinny that’s full of holes and would sink to the bottom if you put it in

the river! We’ll happily take anything that does not pose a danger to our students and we can paint and

fill with soil! The possibilities are endless…….

Yours in learning

Deborah Getley

In Sphinx with Miss Cole and her legendary Year 5 and 6 students… We have been focusing on learning different strategies to help us solve multiplication problems. Each of us has now picked the strategy that we like the best. We have been working our brains hard by doing math talks.

In Literacy, we have been working hard to complete our daily activities to develop our knowledge and skills in grammar, vocabulary, writing, reading, spelling and comprehension. We have been learning all about our class landmark and the country where it is located, which has inspired lots of our art and writing.

We are all looking forward to the rest of the year and enjoying what will be the last year of primary school for some of us. Thanks for reading about our class!

LEARNING LINKS – CYBER SAFETY

If you have been following our Facebook page, you

may be aware that there has been a large focus on

“Number Talks” throughout the school. This arose from the participation

in Early Action for Success (a Department of Education initiative) and the

Building Numeracy Leadership project which was undertaken by Mrs

Waugh, Miss Crammond and Mrs Warren. Number talks are designed to

pose mathematical questions to students and have them consciously

think about what they know, how they will solve the question and the

strategies they use to solve it. Number talks are designed to enhance

student ability to solve maths mentally and expose students to a variety

of strategies.

If you are interested in developing your understanding of number talks

and the changes that have occurred in the teaching of mathematics,

there is a free course available to everyone (adults and children) through

Stanford University entitled “How to learn maths”. The course looks at

really important information on the brain and learning with new evidence

on the ways to approach and learn maths effectively. The link for the

course is below

In Llandilo’s Garden Our gardens are starting to grow! The 3-6 interest group planted fresh veggies at the start of the term and they have been busy looking after them. The oranges are growing, hopefully they will be ready to pick soon.
