AYAH OF THE MONTH
And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.” (Surah Ah-Kahf 45:15)
Narrated Al-Mughira: The Prophet said, Allah has forbidden you ( 1 ) to be undutiful to your mothers (2) to withhold (what
you should give) or (3) demand (what you do not deserve), and (4) to bury your daughters alive. And Allah has disliked that (A) you talk too much about others ( B), ask too many
questions (in religion), or (C) waste your property. (Sahi Bukhari 5975)

In a survey, the American Institute of Stress reported that eight out of ten college students have frequently felt high levels of stress over the past three months. When one compares today’ statistic to 1985, when only sixteen percent of college students reported stress in 1985, this alarming rise is a serious cause for concern. Though this higher stress in 2017 can be attributed to many factors, both controllable and uncontrollable, one factor that we all fall victim to is staying plugged in 24/7. With minute-by-minute updates on current events,
friends’ statuses, and random, often useless information, it’s hard not to feel like the weight of
the world is on your shoulders. Let’s not forget to deal with this influx of information on top of maintaining your own life? An increase in stress levels is not surprising, to say the least.Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a meditation stimulation as a part of a series of events introduced to students to reduce their stress before finals. We went through brain exercises ranging from learning to breathe steadily to controlling ourthoughts. However, the most prominent lesson we learned was the importance of simply unplugging and finding some place quiet in a world filled with noise. The amount
of information being thrown at us, while amazing, can be overwhelming. Taking a step back, deeply breathing, and reconnecting with yourself is the single most important step in reducing stress, coincidentally, disconnecting with the world is an important step in reconnecting with our Creator. With this constant stream of unlimited information at our fingertips, it’s hard not to completely get absorbed in it. While being informed is beneficial, losing yourself in it can be detrimental to mental health. As Muslims, it is also detrimental to our relationship with Allah (SWT). Minutes checking a facebook feed can easily turn to hours without us noticing. Our productivity diminishes as time is wasted on frivolous pursuits that paralyze us as we become consumed by virtual reality. A key characteristic of Prophet Muhammad (SWS) was his ability to give his full attention to whoever was speaking to him. He would turn his body and engage the speaker fully, being wholly “present” in the moment. With Ramadan coming up in less than a month, unplugging for just an hour a day could not only reduce our stress from the toil of this world but could urge us to strengthen the spiritual aspect of our religion. Many people give up social media entirely during this month to better focus on fostering a relationship with our Creator. Let’s make this Ramadan a catalyst for a lifestyle change that goes beyond the thirty days and into the rest of the year.

Our society still has a long way to go when it comes to erasing the stigma of mental illness. This is evident in the way adults and even the youth talk to one another. Our community has no problem discussing high cholesterol, diabetes, or even surger-ies that we or our parents must get done. Breaking an arm or leg results in a cast that everyone can see. In high school, you are sometimes considered lucky for the attention you receive when you break a limb playing sports. When you break a limb, you get to leave class early, your friend helps you carry your books, and people you barely know sign your cast. Mental ill-ness, however, is something nobody can see. It’s something that even the closest people to you, such as your parents, can be completely oblivi-ous to. So how do we make it a topic that is more easily talked about in our community?
First of all, getting our youth to open up about internal suffering isn’t easy, especially when the climate surrounding their issues are “hush hush.” Opening up is hard enough, but it becomes even harder when the community makes it embarrassing for you. Unfortunately, this can be a barrier to the mental health of many of our youth at IAGD, or at any other mosque. According to a depression and suicide awareness program, I Need a Light-house, approximately 20% of teens will experience depression before adulthood. This is not counting other psychological dis-orders, such as anxiety, bipolar, obsessive compulsive disorder
(OCD), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and many more.An estimated 5% of children have ADHD, according to the Cen-ter for Disease Control (CDC). However, I know many parents myself who have children with ADHD, who just ignore their kids’ behaviors, hoping they will go away, because they are too afraid to receive a diagnosis from a physician. ADHD is a disorder that can wreck a student, taking away their ability to concentrate in school, or in conversations. Taking medication will significantly improve this child’s life, allowing them to ex-
cel in school so that they can build a better future. However, there are still many parents in our com-munity who refuse to admit that their child even has a problem, for fear it will make them look bad. It is a sad fact that many adults choose to put their honor before their child’s mental health.
The only way we can dig ourselves out of this hole is to educate. Having more events in our commu-nity centered around mental health awareness
will hopefully erase this stigma. This is not something that is going to be easy, and in reality, it might take a very long time to completely overcome the embarrassment we feel. In the long run, however, becoming more comfortable discussing mental health will be well worth it. When our youth start to excel, we will be grateful that we were able to break down their barriers to success.

We can’t thank Allah enough for the great blessings He (SWT) bestows upon the be-lievers annually. They are the blessings of fasting during the day and reciting His ayat through the night.‘Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr (RA) reported that the messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “the fast and the Qur’an are two interces-sors for the slave of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. The fast will say: ‘O Lord, I prevented him from his food and desires during the day. Let me intercede for him.’ The Qur’an will say: ‘I prevented him from sleeping at night. Let me intercede for him.’ And their intercession will be accepted.” (Ahmad)Ramadan is special for many reasons. First, the Qur’an was revealed during the month of Ramadan, (2:185) and second-ly, there is one night in Ramadan that is better than a thou-sand months, (lailatul Qadr). The believers fast is a complete program for the soul. It is a means to regulate the body while nourishing our spirits with Qur’anic recitations. The Prophet said: “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan out of faith and seeks Allah’s pleasure and reward will have his previous sins forgiven.” He also said: “He who stands the month of Rama-dan (in recitation of the Qur’an) out of faith and seeks Allah’s pleasure and reward will have his previous sins forgiven.”In order to reap the great rewards and benefits of this great month make sure your intention is solely for Allah. As the Prophet taught us, deeds are judged according to inten-tions and that everyone gets what he intended for. We fast for His sake and we recite the Qur’an for His good pleasure. One may be successful in losing weight, quitting smoking, breaking bad habits etc., but if an individual’s sole intention was to do these things, then that person will reap no ben-efits and endured the hardship of fasting and night prayers in vain. The Prophet said: “How many persons fast and get nothing out of their fasting except hunger and thirst and
how many persons pray at night and get nothing out of it except
staying up late.” Prepare yourself to make a pure and sincere intention and
Allah will certainly make it easy for you, In sha Allah.
Regarding Ramadan, the Prophet (SAW) informed us that the gates of Hell close while the gates of Paradise open and the devils will be in chains. He also informed us of the rea-soning behind the name of the month. It was named Rama-dan because it scorches away the sins. This is the month to give more in charity. The Prophet (SAW) was described to be very generous yet the companions found him more generous during the month of Ramadan. This is because of the enormous rewards one receives from his Lord. This is the time to lend a helping hand to the poor and needy, here and abroad. This is the time to feel with our brothers and sisters who have been deprived of the bounties we are enjoying everyday. Think of our brothers and sisters in Gaza, and elsewhere in Palestine, in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in Somalia, throughout the rest of Africa, and in every corner of the globe. Think of the starvation that is plaguing the world while we enjoy sipping our hot tea after a gourmet meal. The Prophet (SAW) said: “The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and affection are like one body. When one part of the body is afflicted, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever.”Aisha said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah concerning the ayah: ‘And the one who are given what they are given and their hearts tremble with fear.’ “Are they the ones who drink alcohol and steal?” He said: “No, O daughter of as-Siddeeq. Rather, they are the ones who fast and pray and give in char-ity yet fear that it won’t be accepted from them. They are the ones who rush to do good deeds and they are the first to do them.” [Tirmidhi]

Ramadan is unique because the supplications made in it are answered. The Prophet said: “Three people will not have their supplications rejected; a fasting person when he breaks his fast, a just ruler, and an oppressed person.” Therefore increase your dua’ and let it come out from the depths of your heart.Ask Allah to forgive you. Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr Ibn al-’Aas (RA) related what Muhammad (SAW) once said. A fasting person, upon breaking his fast, has a supplication that will not be re-jected. When Abdullah broke his fast he would say: “O Allah, I ask of You by Your mercy that encompasses everything, to forgive me.” Ramadan is about forgiveness. Aisha, the young-est of the Prophet’s wives (RA) would ask the messenger of Allah what to supplicate on the night of power (Qadr), the night described by Allah being better than a thousand months. The prophet taught her to say, O Allah, You are the one who forgives, and loves to pardon, so forgive me. Rama-dan is an expiation (kaffarah) of the sins committed from the previous Ramadan save the major sins unless one repents.Last but not least, we are told by Allah the purpose of fast-ing. “O you who believe fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may attain taqwa.” (2:183) Righteousness, piety, Godliness, God-consciousness, and God Fearing are all adjectives that describe the term taqwa. This is ultimately what makes the month of Ramadan so unique. The fasting person’s awareness of God increases. He gets closer to his Lord through the zikr of the night. Ra-madan is all about taqwa. And in the end it is only those who have attained taqwa that will be admitted to Paradise sim-ply because God has prepared it only for righteous and God-fearing people. We wish you a very happy and blessed Ramadan.
