Thank you all for your support this term.

Our students have had a busy and enjoyable time and Year 11 have been working hard in their GCSE exams.

I hope you all have a relaxing half-term and come back

re-energised on Monday 3rd June. Year 11 will need to continue their revision as the GCSE exams also recommence on that date.

I look forward to seeing everyone again after the half-term break.

With every best wish,

Super 8’s Competition Our Year 7 athletes competed in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley “Super 8’s” Competition at Wilson’s playing fields. Each student had to take part in one track event, one field event and finish with a 4 X 100 relay race. Students were selected after excelling in their recent P.E. lessons and they continued to perform superbly on the day of the competition.

The girls were competitive in every event during the day and showed a fantastic team spirit. In a very close finish to the day, our girls just missed out on being crowned champions but showed some fantastic potential for the upcoming athletic events.

The boys’ team also did fantastically well. All of the boys recorded a personal best score

for their event on the day which helped them become district champions! A fantastic achievement which will see them compete for the district at the County Finals at Stanley Park, Blackpool later on in the year.

A very special mention must also go to our Year 9 and 10 sports leaders. They recorded the scores and times, helped set up equipment for the event and without them the event would not have been possible. They showed a fantastic attitude and they made The Hollins very proud. Well done!

Attendance Matters Why is attendance so important? An attendance of 90% appears positive; most of us would be impressed if we achieved it in a test. However, just a drop in 10% can have a bigger impact than you probably think. An attendance of 90% equates to approximately 20 days

absence throughout an academic year, whereas 80% means a pupil has around 38 days absence. The research reveals a direct link between good attendance and success, both in school and beyond.

Some facts 98% attendance = fewer than 4 days absent from school

GCSE Examinations Please would you be able to support the school in

reminding your children to be as quiet as possible

when moving around the corridors. The GCSE

examinations are mostly held in the main Hall, but we

do have one or two that have to be held in other

rooms around school.

95% attendance = fewer than 10 days absent from school

90% attendance = 4 weeks absent from school

85% attendance = 5 ½ weeks absent from school

80% attendance = 7 ½ weeks absent from school

Another “Let’s Be Randomly Kind” bid approved by the Let’s Be team. Well

done to Mark Stephenson in Year 7 who applied for support to update sports equipment at a well used after-school club in Accrington.

French Pen-pals One Year 7 group has recently received Pen-pal letters from a school

in France and were excited to read all about their new friends and

find out more about life in France. They have now written their

replies which are on their way to France and we are hoping they all

write

back

soon!
