Recent changes to the “Attendance” section of the School Education Act 1999 (Section 23) require each school to demonstrate enforcement of the School Education Act. Accordingly parents who intend to take students out of school during term time for holidays will be asked to submit a permission form to the Principal at least one month in advance of the proposed holiday. Copies of this permission form will be available at the front office and on the website. Attached to this form will be the following letter. I am reproducing it here so that parents may carefully consider the often negative educational effects of time away from school. Dear Parent/Guardian It is understood that no families intend to cause a ny disruption to their child’s learning or school life when extra holidays are planned. Th e purpose of this letter is to provide some information for families so the school’s posit ion can be considered. It is important that families consider the followin g issues when arranging holidays to be taken outside of school holiday times.

• Students may miss out on important learning program mes that may affect future education. The school cannot accept respons ibility for learning that is missed during extended leave taken.

• Teachers are not to be asked to set work while exte nded leave is taken for holiday purposes.

• If important assessments are missed then some areas of your child’s report may be left incomplete.

• Extended absences cause extra organisational concer ns for in-class and co-curricula activities including sports days, NAPLAN assessments, assemblies, camps, sacramental programmes and so forth. Your c hild’s involvement in these activities cannot be guaranteed if essential preparation has not been undertaken or they are absent when activities are p lanned.

• Although every effort is made to set a school calen dar of events, due to exceptional circumstances, these dates may need to be changed during a school year.

• Students can find it difficult to learn school rout ines and develop social groups depending when extended leave is taken.

Our children should understand the history of Australia and watching quality TV programmes can help bring history to life.

Channel 7 has a new historically based television series “Australia – The Story of Us”. It begins on Sunday 8 February. Students in Years 4, 5 and 6 are invited to play along in a weekly online quiz where they answer questions related to significant events in Australia’s history. After watching the broadcast go to Yahoo7.com.au/StoryOfUs they will need to register their name and school (with parent/guardian consent).

They will compete against other students in WA for the chance to win a $10,000 grant for the school, plus prizes for the whole family.

***** Loving God,

Thank you for the gift of each other. We have all been gifted by you in special ways

and created in your image and likeness. Teach us to love

and value one another and to accept each other as the unique persons we are. Help us to show our appreciation for each other and

to value the contribution each of us makes to our school. We ask this through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Message from your Community School Health Nurse

Welcome to the new school year. My name is Kristen Cousins, and I am the Community Health Nurse who visits your school.

Community Health Nurses work in schools to promote healthy development and wellbeing so students may reach their full potential. A major part of my work is focused on early intervention and the School Entry Health Assessment program.

Community Health Nurses serve as a health contact point for children and their families, providing information, assessment, health counselling and referral. The services provided are free and confidential.

If you have a concern about your child’s health or development, please contact me via the School Office. I have attached some healthy Lunchbox Tips below:

Back to school…..what to make for lunch today?

Are you constantly asking yourself this question as you busily get ready for the day ahead? Children need a healthy school lunch to boost their energy and help them concentrate and learn in the afternoon, so we asked our Health Promotion Team here at CACH for their top tips.

Lunchbox tips: • Use a variety of breads to make sandwiches more

fun • Use biscuit cutters to cut sandwiches and fruit into

different shapes • Pack your own snacks in a snap lock bag or brown

paper bag decorated with stickers. A cheaper and healthier alternative to pre-packaged snacks.

• Use a frozen ice brick or drink and an insulated lunchbox to keep the food cold

• Include a non-food surprise e.g. a joke, sticker or note

• Encourage your children to be involved in the preparation of their lunch. When children are involved in food preparation they are more likely to experiment with different types of foods.

• Think outside the box; try frittata, boiled egg, popcorn and rice paper rolls to keep lunches interesting!

According to the Australian Dietary Guidelines children aged 4-8 years should aim daily for 1½ serves of fruit; 4½ serves of vegies; 1½-2 serves of dairy; 4 serves of bread, cereals and grains; and 1½ serves of meat. For more information on what is considered a ‘serve’ and for other healthy lunch ideas visit HealthyWA or the Raising Children Network.

St Vincent De Paul Volunteers Required

The parish St Vincent DePaul Society Conference requires 2-3 volunteers to take on the following roles within the conference: Pantry Roster: The pantry requires restocking on occasion and is usually restocked once a month. We require volunteers who are able to dedicate 2 hours of their time every 3rd month. The role involves taking a stock take of the pantry and freezer, shopping for items (vouchers provided) and restocking the pantry shelves. Training will be provided. Call outs: This role requires someone who can be available for 1 or 2 afternoons or evenings a week to accompany leads on callouts. It is rare for us to have callouts every week. Training is also provided for this role. Interested persons can contact either Steve (0488 611 190) or Paul (0403 985 269) or email [email protected] or [email protected] Volunteering in the Society of St Vincent De Paul is a great way to help the less fortunate in our local community. Maranatha Centre for Adult Faith Formation : Looking for some soul-food now the kids are back at school? Married to a Catholic, but not one yourself? Just want to explore something new? Why not take a course at the Maranatha Centre for Adult Faith Formation. St Jerome’s Music Programme 2015 Welcome to another exciting year of making music! Mrs Searle and I are really looking forward to working with the staff, parents and children here at St Jerome’s Primary School. Music is an area that we are passionate about … we absolutely love it and one of our major aims in teaching music is to make it enjoyable, fun and accessible for all children! The following statements are the foundation of our philosophy towards learning music and underline the importance of music as a learning area.

• Music is fun! • Music is for everyone. • Music is unique as it can develop a person holistic ally. • Music offers joy, beauty, connection and community. • Music develops creativity and self expression. • Music promotes children’s confidence and self estee m. • Music enriches lives by providing an integrated exp erience through singing, saying, moving,

dancing and playing. • Music crosses language barriers as it is an alterna tive form of communication. • Music is active as well as passive.

Classroom Music Programme This year all classes will be involved in Classroom Music Lessons. Mrs Searle will be teaching students in Kindergarten, Pre-Primary and Year 1 classes. I will be teaching students in the Year 2-6 classes. The Classroom Music Programme is a programme that aims to develop concepts and skills in the areas of Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Form and Expression. These concepts will be developed through singing, playing instruments, guided listening, mov ing and reading and writing music. Liturgical Music Programme There will be singing rehearsals for students to prepare for liturgical and sacramental celebrations. Whole School Liturgical Singing will take place on Wednesday afternoons from 2.25 – 3.00 p.m. Choral Programme Senior Choir Senior Choir is available to students in Years 4, 5 and 6 with rehearsals taking place in the Music Room on Thursday afternoons from 1.15 – 2.00 p.m. I am asking students interested in committing to the Senior Choir to attend our first two rehearsals. After this, students still wanting to participate in the Senior Choir Programme for 2015 will be required, along with their parents/guardians, to sign a contract formalising their decision to be involved. This process should enable students to make an informed decision about their involvement in the Senior Choir and make them aware of the requirement to commit to the year’s work. Our first Senior Choir rehearsal for the year will be next Thursday 12th February. Prospective choir members are asked to meet Mrs de Kluyver in the Music Room at 1.15 p.m. Instrumental and Vocal Programme The Instrumental and Vocal Programme is available to students in Years 2- 6. Lessons take place during school time. Instrumental Music Enrolment Forms are available from the School Front Office. Instrumental Ensemble Programme This year we have two instrumental ensembles available for student involvement - School Band and Guitar Ensemble.

Page 10: Newsletter No 1 - 6 February - St Jerome's Primary School · 2016-04-11 · Newsletter No 1 6 February 2015 10 P&F Meeting (7pm) 12 Assembly (2.15pm) 13 School Incursion – Visit

These instrumental ensembles are available to students in Years 4, 5 and 6 who have had at least one year’s experience in their chosen instrument and are successful in their audition. School Band rehearsals will take place in the Music Room on Tuesday afternoons from 1.15 – 2.00 p.m. Guitar Ensemble rehearsals will take place in the Music Room on Wednesday afternoons from 1.15 – 2.00 p.m. Auditions for student involvement in either the School Band or Guitar Ensemble will take place during Weeks 2 and 3. If students are successful in securing a position, they will receive a letter confirming their involvement. They and their parents/guardians will be required to sign a contract formalising their decision to commit to their nominated programme. This process should enable students to make an informed decision about their involvement in these ensembles and make them aware of the requirement to commit to the year’s work. Participating in these ensemble situations will enable students to extend their musical skill and ability and provide them with the opportunity to play in a social setting with other musicians. We are really looking forward to the year ahead … musically speaking it promises to be a very exciting one! Carmel Searle and Amanda de Kluyver Music Specialist Teachers
