Dear Parents,
Preparations will soon commence with our current Year 11 cohort concerning the process of elections of our College Student Leadership for 2018. Our Year 11 students will be given the opportunity to submit an application for Student Leadership 2018. Staff and students will then vote to shortlist the candidates. The final shortlisted candidates will then prepare and deliver their Leadership speech to a whole school assembly. On the next day, these candidates will front an interview panel where each candidate will be asked to expand upon their thoughts concerning Student Leadership at St Brigid’s. Announcement of the successful candidates will follow soon after this interview.
WHOLE SCHOOL REVIEW From Tuesday, September 12th through to Thursday, September 14th, St Brigid’s College will host reviewers Helen Goods, Bill Slatter, Chris Robarts and Mark McGinnity. The Panel members will interview staff, students and parents in relation to our ability as a school to achieve students’ potential in terms of learning outcomes and is partly dependent upon the capacity of the school to provide best possible learning environments across five key aspects of schooling. These five key aspects of schooling are: Catholic School Culture, Learning and Teaching, Wellbeing, Leadership and Stewardship and finally, Community Engagement. Any parent who would like to be part of a parent discussion group on Wednesday, 13th September commencing at 9.00am, can leave their name with our Front Office staff.
PRESENTATION BALL Our Year 10 students last night commenced the development of their dancing skills in preparation for our Presentation Ball to be held on Friday, October 27th at the Moore Pavilion at Longerenong College. The students will be instructed by Mrs. Jan Morris and Mr. James Henwood and if the early indications of our students’ enthusiasm and willingness to succeed remain then the Ball will be an exciting and wonderful event.
STUDENT EXCHANGE Congratulations to Jaclyn Clode (Yr 10) who has been accepted for a 2 month exchange to France (November and December), through Student Exchange Australia New Zealand Ltd. Well done, Jaclyn.

Excitement is building as St Brigid's College inaugural Japan Tour participants make final preparations for the nearly three week trip to Japan which will take place at the end of this term!
Regular lunch-time meetings which involve preparation for home-stay experience, a day of school life, group decisions about luggage and clothing choices, learning more about Japanese food and eating etiquette, etc, cultural experiences by increased eagerness to learn usable vocabulary in class and connection of what we are learning about with what we will be doing.
The group of nineteen participants includes students, parents who have been host parents of the Japanese students who have visited us here at St Brigid's, and staff members who will be acquiring invaluable experience for the running of the next trip to Japan.
We plan to hold these trips biennially, with a biennial trip to Italy held in the alternate years. This consolidates and gives authenticity to the teaching of Italian and Japanese at St Brigid's, opens participant parents' and students' lives to a special package of international experience which includes home-stay, school life, fun (Disneyland! Universal Studios!), culture (the great shrines and temples of Tokyo, Kyoto, Miyajima and Nikko), history (Hiroshima and the Atom Bomb, Toshogu and the Samurai Era), travel (bullet trains!) and SHOPPING! Of course, none of the participants are going on it for the shopping!
We also want the broader community of Horsham to know how our academic curriculum offers opportunities for our students and families, through direct experience or through post-trip interaction with friends who went on the trip, to really "live" their study of Italian or Japanese. In many cases, this kind of experience is life-changing, and can lead to a rewarding career in teaching, hospitality, international relations, politics, or welfare services and truly enrich the lives of the students who are able to go on them.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS WEEK
To help promote ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ Connect Ed student, Katrina presented St Brigid’s College VCAL Coordinator Lesley Lannen with a beautiful bunch of flowers. The presentation was made during Monday Munchies, a healthy luncheon program at the Salvation Army Hall. This is a partnership between St Brigid’s College, Salvation Army and the Connect Ed. Each week VCAL students from both schools are given the opportunity to work together to provide lunch for the Connect Ed and St Brigid’s students. The program is in its 5th year- a great achievement. Above is a photo of Katrina presenting the flowers to Lesley Lannen.
In support of Mental Health Week in October, VCAL students from St Brigid’s College are working in partnership with Headspace to develop a full day workshop for Year 9 students. The purpose of the workshop is to promote positive strategies that can be used by young people when dealing with periods of anxiety and depression. The workshops will include hands on practical activities. This week was the first meeting of the team that will be involved in the workshop. It was an opportunity to brainstorm the different activities and to create the program for the day. Stay tuned for more details! The team consists of: Harry Bryan, Sapphira Williams and Nikita Jorgensen (VCAL Students), Antonia Jeffery (Student Wellbeing Coordinator) and Emma Hynes (Community Development & Youth Engagement Officer from Headspace). Lesley Lannen (VCAL Coordinator ) is also part of the team (not pictured).

COMMUNITY PROJECTS – OFF AND RUNNING!!!!
As part of their program for semester two, VCAL students need to participate in a community project. A number of our Year 11 VCAL students are working on two projects for the Kanamaroo Festival. One group is building chairs and tables out of recycled pellets and the other group is designing and building 3 photo-booths. The designs on the photo-booths will reflect images of the Wimmera. Pictures show some of he boys working on their projects.
