Welcome new 4-H members and families. We are so happy to have you joining our 4-H family and

we look forward to helping you through your first year. The first step in helping you, is our efforts to communicate as best we can so that you know all the happenings in our program county wide and with individual clubs and projects. We encourage you to read this and all future newsletters thoroughly for information on important events, meetings and opportunities. It is likely to be confusing at first, so if you ever find yourself wondering which of the events pertain to you, please just give us a call and ask. We are always here to help. The second step in getting off to a good start is joining us for our new 4-H member and family dinner. See inside for more information and please consider joining us as we aim to help you get off to a great start.

It is with a heavy heart that I am thinking this month about new clubs and new members joining our 4-H family while we just said goodbye to a Sublette County 4-H icon. This week, long time UW Extension Educator, Stella McKinstry passed away. For those of who didn’t get a chance to get to know Stella, she was beyond dedicated to the people of our county and the 4-H program. Stella logged an amazing 60 years with the University of Wyoming Extension starting her career

in 1946 and having worked in Sublette County from 1952-2006. As I was just

beginning here, Stella was retiring and I’m forever thankful for the words of wisdom she shared with me as I began. I still have the handwritten letter she left in my desk welcoming me, enlightening, and guiding me. Over the years, I have marveled at how many current volunteers and parents of 4-H members started their early 4-H experiences right here with Stella. The stories and memories people have shared with me about their experiences with Stella have made me laugh, made me proud, made me sad, and helped me realize how much our small county 4-H program has changed over the years. Stella was truly a mother figure to many 4-H members over the years and her mark on this county will never be forgotten. Our heart goes out to Stella’s family, the Wyoming 4-H family, and to my colleagues whom Stella mentored and shared undying friendships with.

Teach at the 4-H State Leaders Conference

Adult Volunteers and Youth Leaders we need you to come and teach at the 4-H State Leaders Conference to be held on March 24-26 in Casper, Wyoming. Our counties and clubs do some great things and this is your time to share your ideas with the rest of the Wyoming 4-H program. They are looking for Share Fair Tables on March 24th in the evening and 60 minute workshops for March 25th during the day. Share something that is working well in your club, your time management or organization ideas, what tips do you have to be a successful project leader, or how you are keeping youth involved. Any topic related to the work you are doing in the 4-H program would be great. If you have a project idea or want to share how to set up an event, think about putting a poster or table in the Share Fair. To submit a workshop proposal or request a Share Fair Table visit https://wyoming4h.formstack.com/forms/untitled_form_14. Please submit one proposal per workshop or share fair table.

Character CountsCitizenship

Definition of Citizenship?Citizenship includes civic duties

that outline how we ought to behave as part of a community. The good citizen knows the laws and obeys them, yes, but that’s not all.

Good citizens stay informed about current issues that affect the community. That helps them understand the issue and to make better decisions to help solve problems. A democratic society relies on citizens who are well informed. Citizens who will consider what is in the best interest of the community,

even if it might not benefit them as an individual.

Good citizens do more than their “fair” share to make society work. They are concerned about today but they are also concerned about the effect of what they do today, might have on tomorrow and future generations. They are committed to the public good and make efforts to conserve resources, recycle, and clean up litter.

Good citizens are concerned about everyone in their community.

In small groups of mixed ages, create a list of different types of communities (i.e. church, neighborhood, school, 4-H club, etc.) Talk about what it means to be a good community member? What are the do’s and don’ts of being a good community member? Ask each group to come up with 10 things that their 4-H club could do to be a good community member? Share the ideas with the whole group. As a club (the whole group), think about the things shared by each small group. Use those items to

create a calendar focusing on good citizenship, being a good community member. As the club plans ways to demonstrate their good citizenship remember to consider the time it will take so that you can plan it in the best month for your schedule, the budget it might require, and the amount of adult support it might need. Have fun showing the community your 4-H Citizenship Pride.

Sublette County Treats for TroopsNovember 28, 2016 • 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

BIG PINEYat the Big Piney Library

Meet at the following locations to package cookies

PINEDALE at Sublette County Extension Office

Just in case you don’t know, Treats for Troops is a county wide program in which members of Sublette County 4-H bake, package, and ship cookies to the military in November. We try to get the cookies to the troops by Christmas to bring them some holiday cheer.

As we look back to the beginning of the program, a record of 73 boxes (approximately 3,276 cookies) was set in 2012.

One of the biggest things that we need is addresses. If you know someone in the military, PLEASE email or call me or the office at the contact info above. We would love to send cookies to every military member that we can. Let’s see if we can top our own record this year!

November 28th has been set as the day to package and ship cookies. We would ask that every kid in 4-H bring two dozen cookies. However, don’t feel obligated to bring ten dozen if there are five kids in your family. Bring what your kids have time to bake. Slightly under done chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal cookies work well because they don’t crumble as easily. We would like to send the troops homemade cookies, not store-bought if possible. The cookies can be dropped off at the library in Big Piney and the Extension Office in Pinedale on the 28th during business hours.

Also we would appreciate help to package the cookies on that day from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. We will vacuum seal the cookies to keep them as fresh as possible. If anyone has a vacuum sealer that we could use, that would be appreciated as well. If you would like to help pay for the shipping, you can bring a donation then too.

Remember what our military does for us. It is so easy to say thank you. Just bring some homemade cookies!

Wintering ChickensLike any other animal, chickens respond to cold stress by adapting their

behavior. Many of you have probably kept chickens over the winter and are old hands at keeping them happy and healthy. For those who may be venturing into winter with them for the first time, there are a few things to keep in mind to help avoid frozen combs and undue stress on your poultry:

• Dead air space is fantastic insulation. While adequate ventilation is important, it’s amazing how much air movement reduces ambient temperature inside a farm shelter.

• There are a number of solutions for keeping water from freezing. There are numerous “do it yourself” plans available on the internet that will save money and may work better than commercial options.

• Since the days are getting shorter, egg production will drop off. While you can keep them laying through the winter with additional light, we personally err on the side of less light than needed in order to give the hens a break while environmental stress is high.

• Weasels and other predators are still active throughout the winter. Glance around your coop now and then to look for new tracks in the snow.

• Fresh shavings or straw help create that insulating dead air space at a small scale for individual birds.

Thankful for our new home!We have officially been in our new, beautiful office for nearly two months! We are

still completing some final touches here and there, but we are mostly settled in! And we couldn’t be any happier! The Pinedale Community Club, lead by Erica Bohnet was our first official club to meet in the new conference room. Our FLL and FTC robotics teams have been meeting twice a week since we moved in and our Pinedale Quilters will begin project meeting soon. We look forward to lots of opportunities with our new facilities. If you want to use the conference room for a meeting, please contact us to get on the schedule. Scheduling if first come first served, so don’t wait until the last minute!

Also, please be sure to thank our County Commissioners for their support in getting this facility for our program to utilize. We look forward to offering new opportunities now that we have this amazing space!
