FROM THE MINISTER’S STUDY

Dear Friends,

This is perhaps not the profoundest joke I have ever used for these articles, but it is thematic! What do you do if 50 ghosts and zombies surround your house? Answer: Hope it’s Halloween. Last night we got back from a break over half-term at Runswick Bay, near Whitby. We were in Whitby on the Friday before coming home which happened to coincide with the first day of a music festival (not that I heard any music) called the Whitby Goth Weekend. Quite why there is such a link with Whitby, I am not quite sure, but I am told it may have something to do with Dracula. Anyway, one consequence was that Whitby that day was full of middle aged people wearing some quite unusual outfits. And when I say quite unusual, I mean utterly bizarre and terrifying. Anyway, by the time this article will be in print I suppose all of us will have seen lots of youngsters also wandering round in unusual outfits as they go about the streets for Halloween. I think it is fair to say that the modern day celebration of Halloween is another festival that I am not quite sure about! It is at this time of the year that I have to remind myself that Halloween has its roots in an important Christian festival. You may know already that Halloween comes from a contraction of All Hallows Eve, indicating that Halloween is the day before All Hallows Day or as it perhaps better known, All Saints day. In the Christian calendar, All Saints Day is an occasion to celebrate the Saints, known and unknown. In Methodist theology, it is seen as a day of giving God solemn thanks for the lives and deaths of his saints, including those who are famous or obscure. In other words, it is a day for us to remember, celebrate and give thanks to God for those ordinary men and women who have lived out their Christian lives among us and who have played such an enormous part in our lives. It has been my privilege over the last few months to speak following the deaths of some of our church members and to recognise how they have touched other people’s lives. It is an honour, as a minister in the Methodist Church, to give thanks for those who have witnessed to so many people the transforming good news of Jesus.

I would encourage us all over the next few weeks, not necessarily on All Saints Day which is 1st November, to remember those faithful Christian men and women who have made a difference in our lives, and especially to give thanks to God for their witness.

Love, Peace and Joy.

Andrew

Tina, Richard, Abi, James and the wider Harvey family are very grateful for the love and support of so many of our church family during David's illness and following his death on 18 September; thank you. Thanks to your kind generosity, we will be able to support the Rosie May Home in Boossa, Sri Lanka with a significant 4-figure sum from donations you made in David's memory.

The Kendall family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, flowers, cards and words of condolence on the death of Tracey’s mum Doreen. Each one has been a huge comfort to us and we felt so loved to see faces from our church family attend the funeral too. Words cannot convey how the knowledge of such love from everyone is helping us at this sad time. God Bless you all. Many thanks to Pat Corah for coordinating the fund raising for the kitchen and organising the Gift Day which raised £4,601.11 with more still to be counted. Thank you for all your donations.

VILLAGE BONFIRE & FIREWORKS

The Village Bonfire and Firework Display will take place on Saturday November 4th on the Temple Centre Field. Gates open at 6.00pm. Admission is £2 adults, £1 children and £5 family ticket. Hot food will be on sale. Please remember there is no parking on site. Also, no fireworks (including sparklers) to be taken in.

TOILET TWINNING UPDATE

Thank you from Dave and Richard for your support for their Sponsored Slimathon in aid of Toilet Twinning. However, it's fair to say that things have not gone to plan! At the time of writing (ahead of the final weigh-in on 2 November), Dave had chipped in with 7 of the 40lb target, but Richard (who had the lion's share of the target) had cancelled out most of that!! It's been a distracting last few months for Richard to say the least. We'll let you decide whether we deserve any sponsorship! Either way, we hope to announce the total amount raised from sponsorship and our July coffee morning in the January newsletter.

SUNDAY SCHOOL SPONSORED CHILD UPDATE

The Sunday School are continuing to sponsor a child through the charity Compassion UK by paying a monthly contribution from our collections. We have finished sponsoring James in Uganda and will now be sponsoring a little boy called Boureima Diallo who is 5 years old and lives in Burkina Faso with his family. We will be sending letters to Boureima and look forward to learning more about him and his life. Please pray for Boureima and if you would like any more information please speak to Kathryn Blount or any Sunday School Leader.

3GENERATE 2017

We are once again taking a group to 3Generate, which is the national Children and Young people's Methodist Conference and this year is being held at Pontins in Southport on 24th-26th November. There are 15 children and young people going from Nuthall, together with 6 adults who are either leaders of our group or volunteers at the weekend. We are travelling on our church coach together with groups from Hucknall and Wollaton, to join with a total of more than 1000 children and young people from around the country. Please remember to pray for good journeys, a successful weekend and for the children, young people and adults who will be taking part that they may enjoy fun, fellowship, learning, deepening faith and development of the church.

ADVENT MEDITATIONS

These meditations will be held in the first week of December (4th-8th) meeting at 12 o'clock each day. Bring your own lunch, tea, coffee and mince pies are provided. The meditation follows at 12.30 until 1.00. This year's theme is: Ready and Waiting. All are very welcome. John Wilson.

VILLAGE CHRISTMAS CARD Work is well under way with the Village Christmas Card which we produce and distribute in conjunction with St. Patrick's and the churches in Kimberley. As in past years we are asking for volunteers to help deliver the cards in late November/early December. A sign-up list will be posted in the Coffee Lounge shortly. Please consider if you can help with this important outreach and encourage others to do so too. Thank you.

ELSIE NEEDS YOUR RECIPE!

The Coach Committee are hoping to put together a recipe book to sell to help raise money to buy a new coach when Elsie retires and would love you to give us a copy of your family’s favourite recipe. This may have been passed down through your family or may be a new one you have just discovered. Whatever it is we would love to include it. It can be anything from a master piece cake or a simple soup, a meal for a special occasion or something you like to make with your children. It may even be some hints or tips you have picked up over the years; whatever you want to contribute we will be very grateful. If you would like your recipe to be included in this very special little book then please write out a copy and pop it into the little silver box in the Coffee Lounge at Church.
