Many, many hoursof work have gone intotransforming the Clubroom into a bright, pleasant space with awelcoming atmosphere. The new furnishings willarrive early in Decemberand this will certainlyenhance the new look. Aswell as theabovementioned members many othershave contributed in theirown way and I urgeeveryone to utilise thenew facilities. Our presentation night willbe held on Wednesday 13December commencing at7.00 pm as, in the past, there will be no shootingon the night. This will alsobe the last time the Clubwill be open in 2006. Secretary’s Report Rod Cheney Hello again. As you knowby now I usually start mylittle bit of the newsletterwith a request that wewelcome a few newmembers into the fold. You will run into thefollowing newbie’s sooneror later, please assistthem in any way you can:Chun Lau Christopher Lai Axel Jones David Rossborough Ian Brown Alan & Alex Belkin Ian Parsons

As you can see, recruitment of newmembers continues to beslow – but steady and I’mpleased to report that ourmembership is nowapproaching 140. We stillhave some way to gobefore we reach the pointwe were at a couple ofyears ago, but it isimproving none the less. Important Change toFirearms Regulations Amongst the recent

changes to FirearmsRegulations is animportant issue formembers and / orprospective members. For the calendar year2006, if you do not ownANY handguns, you willNOT be subject to anyminimum participationrequirements. Thismeans you are free tocome along and utiliseclub handguns to practiceand compete without theworry of having to recordat least ten shoots for theyear.

Participation Reporting After almost three years ofthe new participationrequirements, we still havesome members who havefailed to get the message.I’ve recently had two longterm members seekingclub endorsement of theirHandgun License renewal. Both members ownhandguns and both hadfailed to record anyparticipation at all over thelast 2 ½ years.Unfortunately, participationis reported to VictoriaPolice at the end of eachyear, so in cases such asthese I can not sign theclub endorsement thatincludes a statement thatthe member has met themandatory participationrequirements. Club Census Victoria Police require thatI maintain a record ofmembers of the club, theirlicense details and detailsof handguns that they own. This information iscontained in an AccessDatabase that alsoincludes some additionalinformation for use by theclub ie: email addressesand other contact details. In order to ensure that thisinformation is accurate, Iwill soon be sending you acopy of the information Icurrently have on file foryou. Please take the timeto check that the detailsare correct, make anyamendments that may berequired and return theform to me as soon aspossible. They can be leftat the club (in the tray with

your participation sheets),handed to me personally,or posted to the club mailbox. Club Web-Site The club web-site isstarting to pay dividends, with many of our newmembers advising thatthis is where they firstfound out about us. Thesite includes a competitioncalendar, general newsand provides a forum thatallows ‘General Chat’among members as wellas a classifieds section. If you have not taken thetime to have a look checkit out:www.oakleighpistolclub.com Club Pride Walking around he club oflate, it seems to me thatwe are severely lackingenough of this ! We donot have a team ofcleaners that come in toclean up after yourafternoon of shooting. We do not have a team ofpackers that come in andpack away targets, targetframes and otherequipment for you. Thegeneral cleanliness andtidiness of our club isdependent on all of usdoing just a little bit eachtime we are at the club.Take your used targetsdown and bin them when your finished with them, grab a broom and give therange a quick sweepbefore you start shooting, put your rubbish into oneof the many bins providedinstead of just dropping it

where you stand, packaway the equipment thatyou use during your shoot- there is no one else hereto do it for you. A little bitof pride in your club goesa long way. On a happier note, therenovations beingconducted in our clubrooms are progressingwell. It looks like the endresult will be anoutstanding improvement – and something that willno doubt help with ourefforts to attract newmembers. The efforts ofa few members stand outand they are worthy ofspecial mention: Steve Lekja and MarioMori who have been at theclub four or five times aday to allow access forvarious tradesmen. Theyhave also performed all ofthose fiddly little tasks likeremoving skirting boardsand architraves, thenputting them all backagain, marking and cuttingholes in the ceiling toaccommodate newlighting – and the list goeson. Margot Akerman whohas spent many days ofher own time searching fornew furniture, organizingcarpet layers andselecting tiles. AndrewPierce who has re-wiredat least half the joint, spent a day or so in theroof cavity and replacedevery switch and powerpoint in the place and, hestill has the lighting to do! Thanks to all involved. Rod Cheney

As the year draws to a close there are still several upcoming events at the club. On the 02nd Dec we will again be running the Ironman competition. For those that haven't seen this before it’s basically a little bit of everything! A flyer will be in the clubroom shortly giving more details of timings, cost etc or see Paul Tomassini for more details. Next years competition calendar will also be available in the clubrooms and the website before we break for Christmas.

smoothly in part due to the willingness of club members to turn up and help patch, score and run ranges.

Our presentation night will be held on the 13th Dec where trophies for this year’s club championship will be presented. A BBQ will also be conducted on the night. This will also be a great opportunity for everyone to check out the new and improved clubrooms and hopefully pick up a trophy! Finally I like to take the opportunity to thank all those people who turned up on the 11th and 12th Nov for the clubs ISSF Open. It was a hectic two days that ran very

Our sources have confirmed it – Mario Mori has been receiving special tuition on the finer points of pistol shooting. Rumours have it that that his instructor, pictured here, is non other than his wife – Maria. That would explain how over the past 25years his shooting has improved Maria, I’m told has been the driving force that has guided the champ since he first started in the sport all those years ago.

IPSC

Hopefully, now that wehave all the rangesfinished we will be able tohold a couple of largerinvitational shoots nextseason. If you have any queries orquestions regarding IPSCcontact either Mario Morior Andrew Trotter andthey will be more thanhappy to help.

It’s pleasing to see a lotof new members taking topractical shooting, IPSChas been growing steadilyat the club. So far this year it hasbeen a full house on allcompetition days andthere has been a goodturnout from Oakleigh atvarious State Selectionmatches and finals. The state titles were heldat Eagle Park this yearand Mario again rose tothe occasion winning yetanother State Title. Othernotable performanceswere: Rick Hendrickson 5th

outright and 1st master

grade in production and Steve Lekja 2nd B grade Limited – the familiar OPC pistol shirt was again everywhere and all the Oakleigh lads shot well and had an enjoyable two days. Incidentally – Rick is certainly giving the others in production a bit of hurry up, he is currently ranked 3rd in the state at 99.82% - GO RICK. The VAPA finals unfortunately were a different story, due to other major shoots and personal commitments we were unable to field our strongest team at the finals but still finished a very credible 4th

place.

Latest new in the world ofICORE – Mario, Steve,Logan & Brad recentlycompeted in theAustralian Nationals. Thisyear the 6th AustralianRegional RevolverChampionship was hostedby the Townsville PistolClub over two days withsome great northernweather, clear skies andwarm days.

There was 14 stages setup on 14 ranges whichkept everyone busywalking between ranges. The total round count was315. The Wombat Gullystage and the moverstage certainly provedmost popular with themajority of thecompetitors. There wereplenty of poppers, fallingplates and knock downplates which were all verychallenging.

Mario finished 1st inlimited, his third straightwin at the Nationals.Steve, Logan and Bradalso are to becongratulated on theirgreat performances also.Steve 4th B grade – Brad3rd C grade and Logan 7th

C grade.

That’s it from me anddon’t forget – if yourwheelie gun has lost it’sthrill, come and shootICORE with us.

Mike

Victorian State Titles heldat Calibre Sports earlier inthe year was also shot bya number of the OPCmembers and againimpressive performancesall round with Marioretaining his state crown.

Unfortunately, Oakleighmissed one round of theVAPA postals this seasonwhich put us out ofcontention for the finals.Next year, a moreconcerted effort will bemade to bring home theshields back to Oakleighonce more.

There has been goodparticipation at all clubmatches throughout theyear with between 15 and20 shooters attending –hopefully even more nextyear!

Please have a look at theproposed changes to theICORE constitution and letme know your thoughts –a copy is on the ICOREnotice board at the back ofthe range.

Answers page 10 For those of you that haven’t been to the Club for a while, you won’t recognise the place now. A total refurb of the club rooms is nearly complete. A fantastic effort by many people but special thanks must go to Steve Lekja, Andrew Pearce and Margot Ackerman who have given up countless hours of their time on the project. New floor coverings, furniture, cabinets, wood heater and even a plasma flat screen TV - should make for a great atmosphere and one more reason to get out of the house and head for OPC.

A common mistake with new shooters is to hold the gun down low, with the thumb curled down and a little space between the web of the hand and the tang of the grip. Here's how I grip the pistol with my strong hand. The pistol's barrel is in line with the forearm. The hand is as high as possible on the gun, with the web of the hand pressed hard against the tang, and the middle finger pressed against the bottom of the trigger guard. With a 1911-style pistol the thumb rides the thumb safety. With any type of pistol, I like to have the thumb about in line with the barrel. The tip of the trigger finger is squarely across the face of the trigger.

For the two-hand grip, wrap the fingers of the

weak hand around the shooting hand. Like the shooting hand, the support hand should be high on the gun, with the index finger wedged tightly against the bottom front of the trigger guard. The base of the support hand is tight against the left grip panel, thumb pointing forward in line with the barrel. I grip the gun hard, too. When I release the gun after gripping it for a few seconds, the checkering of the grip panels is impressed into my hand. I have pictures and videos of most of the top shooters in action. During the few seconds when the gun is actually being fired, you can see from the way the muscles stand out in their forearms, they are really locked down hard on the gun.

Too many shooters want to run before they've learned to walk. If you can't fire one accurate shot slowly, you sure can't fire two accurate shots fast. I practice more at 25 yards and out than at closer ranges. Practice one-shot draws at 25 yards. To hit consistently you have to do everything right; the draw, grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control. Work until you can shoot ten consecutive A zone hits in 2.5 seconds per draw. Then cut the time to two seconds per draw. See you on the range and don’t forget – slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Mario
