He will be presenting on many of the current topics of social media, internet safety, cyber bullying, vaping, etc. that our students face in this modern world. He will be giving tips to parents and students. We would love to see you there. Middle School students are invited as well. We strongly encourage you to attend this meeting. It can be overwhelming to keep up with what is happening in our students’ lives as we try to help them navigate these critical middle school years. We believe the evening will be enlightening and we hope it will open a dialog between you and your student that will have a lasting impact. This Thursday, November 7th we have School Resource Officer, Seth Parker coming to RLS. He will be presenting on many of the current topics of social media, internet safety, cyber bullying, vaping, etc. that our students face in this modern world. He will be giving tips to parents and students.

We would love to see you there. Middle School students are invited as well. We strongly encourage you to attend this meeting. It can be overwhelming to keep up with what is happening in our students’ lives as we try to help them navigate these critical middle school years. We believe the evening will be enlightening and we hope it will open a dialog between you and your student that will have a lasting impact.

6th Graders have been learning about plate tectonics. They did a terrific job on their Oreo Cookie Plate Tectonics Lab! 6th Graders are also working on their project which focuses on ways to be good stewards to the environment. They have great ideas and I look forward to them presenting their completed projects!

7th Graders have been learning about Gregor Mendel, phenotype, genotype and Punnett Squares. They are doing great!

8th Graders did a terrific job on their Element Projects and their costumes were very creative! Their presentations showed that they have a good understanding about their chosen element. I am proud of their effort and hard work on the project!

Mrs. HesterMiddle School Dean of Students

Classes: Religion, 6th & 7th Social Studies 6th Grade- We are studying the US East of the Mississippi River. Students are strengthening their knowledge of the geography of the United States.

7th Grade- We are studying Asia by regions. Students are focusing on mapping small sections of Asia.

Both 6th & 7th Grade may strengthen their mapping skills using the website: https://www.seterra.com/

Team China Religion Class is working on their first memory verse for the school year. Ask your student to share with you our Friendship Friday whole group class activities.

Athletics: Basketball season is underway. Please turn in your athletic forms and fee for basketball. We will be playing our first ever PLAY4KAY to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The dates are February 3rd and 4th. We will have more information soon.

6th Grade Language Arts: In Sixth Grade Language Arts, we are learning about prepositional phrases and diagramming, as well as end marks and punctuation.

7th Grade Language Arts: In seventh grade, we are learning all about commas and wrapping up our study of The Six Traits of Writing!

8th Grade Language Arts: In eighth grade, we have begun writing novels and will spend every moment working toward that word count goal!

8th Grade Literature: In Literature, we are comparing and contrasting The Giver movie and book. We will also begin our study of graphic novels focusing on Saints & Boxers by Gene Yang.

Mrs. Farmer

We’ve had a wonderful first quarter in math this year!

6th Grade Math: During the first quarter we have been doing a lot of reviewing. As we move through the next few units we will start to get into material that is new to most of the students. Over the month of November and into December we will be studying operations with fractions.

7th Grade - Pre Algebra: We are wrapping up our studying factors, fractions, and exponents. Next we will move into expanding our knowledge of operations with fractions and solving equations with fractions in them.

8th Grade - Math 1: We have continued our study of summary statistics of data sets and using our calculator as a tool to help us in this study. Shortly, we will move into our linear functions units.

Math Help is available during lunch on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during the first 20 minutes of each lunch period. Everyone is welcome!

National Junior Honors Society

● Service Hours for the second quarter (total of 4 hours) are DUE by January 16th. Remember your folder with your summary sheet and all verification forms should be in Mrs. Farmer's room by the end of the day on 1/16 for us to check.

● November Meeting is scheduled for November 7th during lunch. Looking forward to hearing updated from each group about the service and fundraising activities for the year. Please see Mrs. Farmer if you have any questions.

● LOOKING for Sponsors for our Play 4 Kay games. Sponsor packets will be available soon. Members should start making contact with local businesses to obtain sponsors for this event. Play 4 Kay games will be held on February 3rd and 4th. There will be many opportunities to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in the coming months.

6th Grade Literature- We are reading and doing a bible study on The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Students are reading The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe and researching bible passages that relate to the book. Students are creating poster projects to connect their own lives, the bible, and the novel together. We will resume Latin and Greek roots study next week.

7th Grade: We are reading The Outsiders and West Side Story and comparing dramas to prose and novels. Students have enjoyed reading the parts in West Side Story and comparing it to the Outsiders. We have been discussing prejudice, bullying, and judging someone by the way they look. We will continue to finish up our readings and will resume Latin and Greek roots work next week.

Mr. UngerRLS Middle School Music in Worship class commenced learning a theme song for the school year which will involve students sharing their instrumental gifts as well. We also began learning the theme song for the National Lutheran Schools.

RLS Middle School Worship Arts class led student-written and student led Chapel Service for RLP and RLS on Nov. 5th and 6th . They will begin studying Choirchimes soon.

RLS 5-8 Band, RLS 5-8 Chorus and the Recorder Ensemble have resumed rehearsals; and are looking for additional participants. RLS 5-8 Chorus has already helped lead music in Chapel Worship.
