What’s Inside Water quality & ecosystem monitoring have been at the heart of the restoration project. With an emphasis on community-based research, the ARBOR project has been a test bed for the utilization of new sensor technologies for monitoring environmental systems remotely.

The ARBOR restoration site includes one bridge mounted and four well installed, YSI multi-parameter sondes along a one mile stretch of the White River and the Western edge of the IUPUI Campus. The system utilizes NexSens radio transmission technology for hourly data retrieval and upload to a WQData server hosted within CEES. The ARBOR site is part of an extensive wetland, riverine, and lake site network developed by CEES for the exploration of advanced monitoring technologies to improve our ability to understand water quality and water resource management while learning about complex ecosystems. The network includes 28 fi eld deployed sondes, seven with real-time transmission capabilities, and two weather stations throughout central Indiana.

The RiverSurveyor ADP collects vertical profi les of water-velocity, water depth, and vessel-velocity and sequentially calculates discharge in vertical increments from one bank of a river to the other. This is achieved by sending out acoustic pulses and using the Doppler shift to measure 3-D motion. A RiverCat expands on this by integrating data telemetry with the measurement capabilities of a mini-ADP mounted on an unmanned fl oating vessel.

Its compactness, portability, and ease-of-use allow for great fl exibility in deployment confi gurations and make the RiverCat especially advantageous for obtaining profi les in remote areas and dangerous waters. The RiverCat is most commonly towed from a bridge or attached to a line held by two people on either side of a river, although a variety of ingenious, site-specifi c methods have also been employed.

Use of the RiverCat eliminates risks associated with personnel working from boats, and greatly reduces the time spent in making discharge measurements using conventional current meters. Faster measurement times not only improve effi ciency, but can also increase the accuracy of discharge measurements, especially during periods of rapidly changing stage or fl ow.

The RiverCat is composed of a transducer housing and a watertight electronics compartment mounted on 2-sealed aluminum hulls. Alternatively, the aluminum hulls can be replaced by another type of platform, such as a high stability trimaran, which

provides the best all-around performance under a wide range of conditions.

RS-232 radio modems, on both the RiverCat and base station computer, allow continuous two-way communication. While data from the RiverCat is

continuously transmitted to the base station computer, those at the base station can control and evaluate the RiverCat’s operation and performance using SonTek “RiverSurveyor”

windows software.

RiverSurveyor software, an intuitive, user-friendly program designed by hydrologists, ensures that high-quality data is collected in the fi eld. RiverSurveyor

provides real-time velocity, discharge, bathymetric data, and

quality control feedback within a clear and easy-to-use layout. In addition

to RiverSurveyor, ViewADP software can be used after data collection for detailed analysis and post-processing. This detailed analysis and post-processing ability gives the RiverCat/RiverSurveyor a distinct advantage.

Features:

»Real-time velocity profi ling, bathymetric data, & discharge measurements from unmanned vessel »Great fl exibility in deployment »Quality control feedback, detailed data analysis & post-processing capabilities »Increased effi ciency of discharge measurements

The YSI 600 LS provides an accurate and economical system for in-situ, long-term monitoring of temperature, conductivity, salinity, water level, and discharge. Discharge is calculated from water level based on user-defi ned algorithms. Simply program the sonde for a particular weir or fl ume type, enter a stream stage

discharge table, or set-up a Manning equation, and the sonde will automatically calculate and log discharge data.

In addition to discrete and unattended monitoring, the 600 LS is easily integrated into NexSens data logging and telemetry systems to provide real-time data with on-line access. Researchers at the Silver Lake Wetlands

rely on the accuracy and dependability of 600 LS sondes for real-time monitoring of water level in wells throughout the wetland area. Water level data with an accuracy of ±0.01 ft is automatically posted every 30 minutes to a password

protected website. To view real-time water level data at the Silver Lake wetlands, visit: www.WQData.com and select Silver Lake from the list of open sites.

Coliform bacteria have long been used to assess the sanitary condition of waters. While most coliforms are not pathogenic, they serve as valuable indicators of fecal contamination because they are more common than pathogenic bacteria, have longer viability in freshwater, and are relatively easy to identify. The absence of coliform bacteria generally indicates the absence of more dangerous intestinal bacterial pathogens.

Coliform bacteria come from many sources, including the intestines of warm-blooded animals. The fecal coliforms are a subset of coliforms specifi c to the intestinal tract of warm-blooded animals, and can be separated from other coliform bacteria because they grow at the more restrictive temperature of 44.5° C. E. coli, a type of fecal coliform, is the most commonly used fecal coliform indicator.

Microbiological Environmental Laboratories (MEL) by Hach provide portable, fi eld solutions for both qualitative and quantitative testing of total and fecal coliform bacteria. Qualitative tests, such as the presence-absence (P/A) test, simply evaluate the presence of coliforms in a sample. Water with any detectable amount of coliform bacteria is not considered potable. Quantitative tests, such as the Membrane-Filtration (MF) or the Most Probable Number (MPN) techniques, quantify the coliform density in terms of the number of colony forming units (CFU) per 100 mL of water. Performing quantitative testing is important in determining the suitability of water for secondary contact, such as swimming and bathing.

The MF method is a relatively simple and fast method that accommodates testing large numbers of samples. Because samples are fi ltered, this method is best for water with low levels of background organisms, suspended solids, or metals. The MPN method utilizes sample dilutions and is ideal for more turbid samples,

such as in wastewater and sludge applications. This method involves incubating samples of various dilutions on a coliform-specifi c media in order to statistically determine the number of bacteria in the sample.

All Hach MEL laboratories come with a portable incubator, other necessary apparatus, and instructions to perform portable, small scale microbiological testing in both laboratory and fi eld environments. A variety of media selective for different bacteria and based on different test methods can be used with each kit,

allowing customized microbiological testing specifi c to the application needs of the user.

Fondriest Environmental offers four different MEL kits by Hach that utilize EPA tested methods to evaluate for total coliform, fecal coliform, and E. coli bacteria:

The City of Columbus, Ohio has recently deployed a real-time water quality profi ling system at Hoover Reservoir, which serves as one of the city’s primary drinking water supplies.

Profi ling systems from YSI provide a means of measuring water quality parameters throughout a vertical column. The systems are available in three confi gurations: fi xed profi ler for dam and bridge mounting, pontoon profi lers for inland water bodies, and a buoy profi ler for coastal applications. An integrated winch and

drive mechanism automatically raises and lowers the water quality instrument. Real-time data acquisition is provided with an integrated data logging and telemetry system. Set-up, operation, and data presentation software are supplied with each system.

At Hoover Reservoir, the YSI 6600 EDS sonde traverses the water column four times daily.

Temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, and chlorophyll are measured at 1 meter intervals, while an integral pressure sensor records the depth of each measurement.

Rich Rutherford, Water Research Analyst II for the City of Columbus Division of Water, stated...

“The benefi ts of the platform include improved process control at the plant, chemical cost reductions, security monitoring, and customer satisfaction in taste and odor control. Additionally, the improved understanding of our reservoir’s limnological life cycle will help to secure its reliable use for future generations in Columbus.”
