Theeventincludedalargescaleinteractive(mock)scenariothatchallengedateamofthreeparamediccertifiedteammemberseachtotakeonascenethatencompassessavingmultiplevictimsofacardiacevent.TheeventpurposefullychallengedALSteamstorespondtoascenariowhichisonlybecomesrevealedtothematthepointofcall.Theteamhadfifteenminutes

tosortthroughaseriesofeventsthatledtopatientstoacriticalcondition.Metro-DadeFireRescuewontheevent,withBocaRatonFireRescuesecond,andMiramarFireRescuecomingin3rd.HonorablementiongoestoDavieFireRescuewhocameinat4thplaceinaverycloserunforthird. Mr.CooperwasassistedinthelabexercisebyEMSinstructorsAlainRodriguezandSteveSweetman.ThislabcouldnothavebeenpossiblewithouttheEMSadministrationbacking.WethankEMSDirectorMr.ChrisCrespowhowaskindenoughtoorderandpickupthepigorgansfromalocalmeatpackingcompany. Ittookacoordinatedefforttoconductthislabduetothenumerousskillstationsthatweresetup.ThestudentshadtorotatethroughfourskillstationsandhadtodemonstratetheircompetencyinSurgicalandNeedleCricothyrotomy,IntraosseousInfusion,Endotracheal

IntubationandPleuralDecompression. Abriefdescriptionofeachprocedurelistedabovemighthelptocreateabetterpictureofthisuniquelab.SurgicalandorNeedleCricothyrotomyisaninvasivetechniquethatplacesanendotrachealtubedirectlyintothetracheathroughasurgicalincisionatthecricothyroidmembrane.IntraosseousInfusionisusedwhenanIVisnotavailableandincludestheinsertionofarigidneedleintothelongbonecavity.Forthisskillthestudentsusedchickenlegs.EndotrachealIntubationisoneofthemostimportantparamedicsskills.Whenapatientisnotbreathingorunconsciouswithsevereairwaycompromiseendotrachealintubationisindicatedtomanageandsecureapatient’sairway.APleuralDecompressionisdonebyplacingalargeneedleintothethoraciccavity.Thisprocedureisperformedtorelieveatensionpneumothorax(collapsedlung)usuallycausedbytrauma. Thestudentsappearedtoreallyenjoythislabandthefeedbackfromthemwasquitepositive.
