On May 19 th 2010, in honor of National EMS Week and our EMS student body, City College hosted the first Annual ALS (advanced life support) Competition, also known as the James Malcolm ALS Competition, which was named in tribute for our EMS clinical coordinator. Fifteen teams from around the State of Florida such as Flagler County Fire Rescue, St. Johns, and Temple Terrace EMS systems attended the College’s first Annual EMS ALS competition. The event included a large scale interactive (mock) scenario that challenged a team of three paramedic certified team members each to take on a scene that encompasses saving multiple victims of a cardiac event. The event purposefully challenged ALS teams to respond to a scenario which is only becomes revealed to them at the point of call. The team had fifteen minutes to sort through a series of events that led to patients to a critical condition. Metro-Dade Fire Rescue won the event, with Boca Raton Fire Rescue second, and Miramar Fire Rescue coming in 3 rd . Honorable mention goes to Davie Fire Rescue who came in at 4 th place in a very close run for third. Over 200 team members, judges, staff, EMS students and participants were present to watch (and participate) in this intensive and educational mass casualty scenario. The day’s activities included a local popular artist who performed face painting, radio station 93 Rock, food vendors and fire department regalia, t-shirts and pins Fort Lauderdale Campus News page 1 ational Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week May 16 th – 22nd, brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine’s front line. EMS students from the EMS club participated in setting up and actually role playing in this large scale event. Also included in the fun were area representatives, EMS Fire Rescue Chiefs from local EMS and Fire Departments (i.e. Sunrise, Ft. Lauderdale, Davie, and Margate etc.) who were in support of the tribute. A special big “thank you” goes out to the EMS Club, the EMS student body for becoming student actors, and the EMS department for making this event such an exciting success. Here are some positive comments and pictures from our EMS students: “We will see you next year May 15 th -21 st 2011, the event will be a big surprise!”
