From the Principal
Fundraising at our school, like every school, provides additional resources to enhance our students’ learning and improve our school environment.
At St Joseph's we tend to get plenty of helpers on the day of events, but are short on people to set events in motion. Currently a small band of enthusiastic parents are coordinating and running fundraising, but this is unsustainable.
Last year our P&F association held a special meeting to discuss fundraising for 2020 and a new fundraising model was decided upon. Beginning this year, the families of students in Year Two will become the fundraising committee. This committee is NOT expected to do all the work. Their role is to plan and organise fundraising events for the year and call on families across the school to lend a hand.
The fundraising leadership role is for JUST ONE YEAR, before it is handed over to the next year’s Year Two committee. In this model, the work is shared fairly among the parents/carers, as each year a new Year Two fundraising committee is formed.
Letters have been emailed to all 2020 Year Two families, inviting them to a meeting on Tuesday February 25 at 6.30pm in the staffroom. (Families with children in other classes are also very welcome to come along.)
St Joseph’s 2020 Swimming Carnival Following our swimming carnival last week, the age champions are as follows:
Junior Boys Age Champion - Jamie Woods Junior Girls Age Champion - Emme Dowling 11 Years Boys Age Champion - Sebastian Rees and William O’Bryan 11 Years Girls Age Champion - Charlotte Mallamace Senior Boys Age Champion - Cooper Jones Senior Girls Age Champion - Caitlyn Webb
In addition to this the following students received the School Spirit Award: - Bree Gillespie - Alistair Fattore-Mandaglio This award recognises students who go above and beyond to support their house. Many thanks to Mrs Flagg and Miss Kane for their planning and preparation of the carnival.
2020 Student Representative Council Each year students in each primary class vote to elect a Student Representative Council leader.
This year’s elected SRC representatives are: 6R: Shyla Harmer 5C: Charlotte Mallamace 5P: Domenica Piccolo 4F: Ben Dawe 3CH: Annica Su 3I: Ella Tyrell Congratulations to each of these elected leaders.
Diocesan Principals’ Meeting Next Wednesday, 19th February from 1.45pm, we will welcome all principals from across the diocese of Wagga (both primary and secondary) for a meeting here at St Joseph’s. Please make these guests to our school welcome, if you have the opportunity. Also please be aware that this will impact on parking for the afternoon pick-up on the day.

COOLIBAH STREET PICK UP Each afternoon families can choose to pick up their children in Coolibah Street. This pick up location operates as a drive through pick up option. Students are walked by a teacher to the Coolibah gate at the bottom of our school grounds and are directed to their family car as it arrives at the front of the queue. We ask that you DO NOT park on Coolibah Street, school side, after 2:45pm. This is to prevent confusion for those using the drive through pick up option, as they presume any cars along this area are waiting in line to move forward. If you are using the Coolibah Street pick up you are asked to have your family name on the front passenger side visor. This assists our staff to efficiently get each child to their car. Our office staff are happy to make one for you.
NUDE FOOD DAY EVERY MONDAY
Every Monday will be Nude Food Day. On Nude Food Day, our aim is for student lunch boxes to be wrapper free. The purpose of this is to raise awareness of ways we can reduce waste/packaging and also to keep the healthy food profile high. We want our students to be informed about how we can be stewards of God’s creation. This is a practical way to show that each of us CAN make a difference to the amount of waste created. Thank you for your support.

MUSIC Instrumental Lessons We are underway and the students are beginning to sound great! Students are to be reminded to bring their instrument, and music book on their allocated lesson day so that they can make the most of their lesson. If students forget their instrument, they are still required to attend their lesson. If there are any changes to the timetable, I will post a message on our school Facebook page.
Just a few reminders for parents and students, fees are now paid through Compass and if you have any questions about this, please contact Kate Jones through the office. In addition, if you need assistance with payment plans or methods please don’t hesitate to contact us about that too.
If your child no longer wants to continue their lessons for any reason, please make sure you contact me with a formal email or written note so I can pass on this information to the Catholic Schools office. We generally encourage students to stick out each semester or even until the end of term.
Choir Thank you to those students who came to our Deanery Mass last Thursday and our Opening Mass on Friday. Your help was greatly appreciated! We are looking forward to attending many more Masses and events. A reminder that choir is on Thursdays at the second half of lunch in the music room.
Eisteddfod 2020 If you or your child is interested in entering the eisteddfod this year, please let me know and I will send a note home with your child about the different sections and possible dates.

Clean Team News; Let’s Clean Up! Anyone who knows me knows that I am passionate about doing what we can to make this world a better place. And I believe that it begins with education and for a lot of children, it begins here , with what we do at school. We need to set up a system at this school that is in line with our global responsibilities and give our students the knowledge of how to be more respectful and responsible with our waste disposal. Last year, we had the Enviromentors come to our school and show us just a few ways that we can work together to deal with our waste better. Since then, a group of interested students have come together to form a group. They are called the CLEAN TEAM. We have looked at what is working well at this school, such as Friday clean-up and having different areas for stages to clean. But they have pinpointed a lot of areas that are of concern. For example, did you know that on the ovals, some children stuff rubbish inside the drain grates? The water caught by these drains is used in the sprinkler system to water the grass. This blocks them and can lead to other problems such as flooding. We will attempt to address this problem and others throughout the year. Since the beginning of the year, I have been introducing new bins to the school, at this stage, Paper Recycling boxes and Return & Earn bins have gone out. The money raised will go back into the school and getting resources aimed at reducing our footprint on the world. On Thursday Domenica Piccolo spoke to the school about the worm farm that her sister, Maria, introduced and how we can help. I have also been working with the caretaker to set up the compost bins (which will be set up behind the chook house) and looked after by the CLEAN TEAM. When the school gets chickens, the scraps collected can be used to feed them. Early next week the CLEAN TEAM and I will address the school as a whole. The presentation will be about which bins are for what and a pep talk about keeping our school tidy. If you are interested in helping out in any way or have any questions, let me know! Thank you.
