Message from Mrs Barr Dear Parents What an absolutely fantastic performance from the year 5 on Wednesday evening. An immersive production, that turned fairy tales on their head and moved us from the drama room, into the hall and back again, captivated and entertained us all. Thank you Mr O’Connor for once again taking used on quite a different journey and challenging the children to act with flair. I will certainly be hiring those bouncers. Thank you also to the year 5 team and Mr Mike for the scenery, face painting and support. A grand team effort. Unfortunately, I was unable to make the year 3/4 production but I hear, from extremely reliable sources, that it too was a major success. Thank you to Mr Hill-Jayne, all the year 3/4 team and again Mr Mike and Les for their tireless dedication to the cause. I am now looking forward to the Easter Bonnet parade before the end of term. And on that note, may I wish you all a restful break. Message from Mrs Barr Dear Parents

What an absolutely fantastic performance from the year 5 on Wednesday evening.

Best wishes

NEWS FROM MUSIC DEPARTMENT This week Chepstow House School hosted its own drum concert, featuring a handful of drummers from our ranks. These drummers impressed their audience with their composed instrumental loops that they grooved along to on the drums. A variety of musical genres were covered, from rock, to funk and even latin. We’ll no doubt see some of them again for the upcoming summer concert on June 19th, alongside many other instrumentalists.

Missed the drum show? You can catch it on Frog (music page/events) or the Chepstow Instagram.

NEWS FROM SPORTS DEPARTMENT Year 4 rugby vs Knightsbridge – 26th March

The year 4 boys travelled to the picturesque surroundings of Burton Court to take on Knightsbridge in three contact rugby fixtures. The ‘A’ team played their best rugby of the season, they passed, tackled and ran with the ball brilliantly. Seb excelled in attack, scoring three domineering tries and Konstantin made some fantastic tackles, however this was a solid team performance. The ‘A’ team lost 40-35 in the final seconds of the game. The ‘B’ team started slowly in a one-sided game, Victor playing nicely in a 3-5 loss to a powerful Knightsbridge team. The ‘C’ team rounded off their rugby season with a battling performance, losing 50-20 in a tough game, Rohan made some brilliant attacking runs, along with some good tackles from Gustav.

Year 4 hockey V Knightsbridge 26/03/2019

This week year 4 played their last hockey match of the season against Knightsbridge at Linford Christie. The girls were split into two teams on two separate pitches and played a total of two 15 minute halves. The teams were focusing on strong passes, dribbling up the side of the pitch and a powerful sweep pass in the D when shooting for goal. Before the match the girls had plenty of time to practice these skills before the opposition arrived, this meant the teams were focused and warm. During the matches both teams played very well together and managed to secure one win and one close loss. It was great to see how much the girls have developed their skills this term and was a brilliant end to the hockey season.

Year 2 rugby vs Redcliffe – 25th March

15 year 2 children travelled to Linford Christie to take on Redcliffe in a host of tag rugby fixtures. The children were in good spirits as this was most of the children’s first ever competitive fixture. Every single child who participated showed brilliant attacking and defensive skills and worked together brilliantly to forge two wins! Well done year 2, a set of very promising performances.

LITTLE CHEPSTOW NEWSThis week at Little Chepstow has all been about our Mummies. We have celebrated them fully, talking about why we love them, what they do that is kind and also what makes them special. We have made special cards, painted portraits of them, we have had three wonderful celebrations in school for Mother’s Day. We hope that they are feeling very loved, appreciated and spoilt.

In addition we have been learning how to make eco-bricks out of bottles and the children are all looking forward to making their own brick over the Easter holidays for our very special project that will take place in Eco-week in May.

RECEPTION NEWS This week we have been writing our own version of The Three Little Pigs. The children had lots of fun mixing up the characters. Our favourite had to be The Three Little Children and the Big Bad Mrs Barr.

In math’s we have been consolidating our numbers to 50 and beyond. The children also enjoyed a math’s themed Easter egg hunt.

Friday was a very special day for all the children and their mummies. We had our Mother’s day tea party which was lots of fun. What a lovely memory to treasure forever.

YEAR 1 NEWS This week Year 1 have explored fractions in their maths lessons. The children were able to identify halves and quarters and produce some beautiful shapework to present these quantities. We also linked this splitting of an object, to splitting numbers via halving and quartering. Some of us found halving a half to make a quarter quite tricky!!

Continuing our Roman topic, the children investigated the daily life of a Roman. We are thrilled with their fantastic posters, which answered all the questions they came up with throughout the week. Year 1 showed excellent questioning skills using the WWWW cues.

With Mother’s Day only a few days away, the children have been hard at work creating beautiful presents for their mummies! The children produced some fantastic informal letters with the correct layout and expected content. We also introduced the children to acrostic poems, which the children were very excited about! They loved using lots of super adjectives and phrases to create a special note describing their mothers. We hope you enjoy reading through all their hard work at the weekend!

YEAR 2 NEWS We can’t believe that the spring term has almost come to an end! This week it’s been full steam ahead with our maths lessons, where we have been learning all about money, calculating change and combining coins or notes to make a total. Our DT projects are looking awesome and we’ve been thinking hard about ways to make our designs structurally strong. History has seen us learning all about life as a chimney sweep and exploring how Queen Victoria put things in place to improve the situation. Finally, our stories based on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ are nearly complete! We can’t wait for Friendship Fun Day next week to show off our hard work on our Easter bonnets!

YEAR 3 NEWS We had an exciting trip to the Science museum on Tuesday. We were able to go in the Wonderlab and explore different interactive Science experiments, we all loved the friction slides! We were lucky enough to watch two shows on electricity. The first we created static electricity on Manon’s hair! Then we saw a charge of 1,000,000 volts to create lightening. In the second show, we learnt about circuits. We even created a human circuit!

YEAR 4 NEWS This week the children have mainly focused on rehearsing for our production. The children have worked extremely hard on ‘Around the World in 40(ish) minutes’ and we are all very proud of them.

In our History lessons we have been learning about the similarities and difference between the Celts and Romans. The children completed a sorting activity where they decided if facts were appropriate for either the Celts or Romans. It was very interesting to see the children’s answers. Did you know for entertainment the Celts sang songs together but the Romans enjoyed watching chariot races and gladiators fighting?

YEAR 5 NEWS What a way to end the Spring term. Having only done one rehearsal come Wednesday afternoon, the teachers were a little apprehensive about how the year 5 production was going to go. Mrs Templeton worried that the wolves wouldn’t be heard from behind their masks, Miss Etherington was concerned about the transition between the scenes and Miss Greensted didn’t know if the children would be able to stay in character whilst handing out the canapés. However, in true year 5 style, the children pulled it out the bag and provided a fantastic fairy tale, which entertained us all. It was a real team effort, with children clubbing together with Mr Mike to create a gorgeous set and parents for donating props, costumes and face paint! A big thank you to all. We’re so proud of each and every one of you!

Finally, we hope you have a restful and enjoyable Easter break and we look forward to seeing you in the summer term!

YEAR 6 NEWS This week has been jam-packed in English with rehearsals for our performances of three scenes of a Midsummer Night’s Dream. We have been working on learning all the lines during the week for our performance on Friday and using vocal and facial expression to create the atmosphere and effects of a fairy kingdom. In-home prop cupboards have been raided and we can’t wait to see what the Golden and Imperial Eagles come up with! In Maths, Miss Long’s group were challenged to use their knowledge of converting from fractions to decimals to solve a chocolate problem! Meanwhile, Miss Thamia and Mrs Hoffmann’s groups have been creating mystery projects. Dastardly crimes have been committed and our detectives can only use the maths-based clues to solve the investigations. Will the mystery of Punee the Pug’s theft be uncovered?! Ask Michael, Ollie and Leo for their next instalment… Sticking to the theme, in Current Affairs we have been continuing to learn about the Criminal Justice System in the UK. We had a fascinating talk from Mr Mike who worked as an Art teacher in a well-known London Prison for many years. Both the Imperial and Golden Eagles were very mature and insightful in these discussions and looked at some of the incredible artwork produced by prisoners in Mr Mike’s old classes. On a different tangent, Geography has focused this week on North America and the amazing natural and man-made features across the continent, from the Hoover Dam to the Panama Canal. You can look out for our tourist leaflets for a guide on where to visit next!

YEAR 7 NEWS In Year 7 it has been assessment week and we have been hard at work demonstrating the knowledge and skills we have acquired so far this year. We have also had quite a bit of fun creating our artwork for the Gala in the summer term. We have had time to focus on some new learning this week. In English we have worked on using our five senses to help us write creatively, whilst in RE we have looked at the Hanukah story and discussing the ideas associated with miracles and the human need for miracles. We also got the opportunity to do some gardening last Friday where we planted chillies and helped tend to the peas, we took lots of pictures so here are just a few!

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY - CREATIVITY WITH ART Mrs Sevaux (mother of Victor and Eloise) inspired us all with her assembly on Tuesday. How artists see another use for products discarded in everyday life to bring beauty and another lease of life to them was amazing. It tied in beautifully with our eco theme for the year and helped the children see another way to use products they think they may be finished with. We look forward to hearing how your everyday household items are transformed over the weekend and Easter holidays! Can you guess what these everyday objects can be made into?
