Career and Job Expo.
The Development Corporation hosted its first Career and Job Expo May 30th at the Hi-
Liner Activity Center. The Expo is about building relationships, along with bringing
together employers and job seekers. Fourteen businesses were on hand to share
information about their businesses or organization, culture, training and advancement
opportunities. This event was a great opportunity not only for job seekers and recruiters,
but businesses to connect with high school counselors and each other. Thank you to
everyone who supported the event. Look for next year’s Career and Job Expo in April
2020!
When people think about the millennial generation, many think all individuals under
30 as being a part of this age group. There are actually two separate generations
within this demographic who are either in the workforce currently or will be entering
the workforce in a few years. Generation Z is made up of 9-24 year old’s and
Generation Y (commonly referred to as millennials) is 25-39 year old’s. There are
about 70 million individuals that make up Gen Z which means they will soon
outnumber the millennials in the workforce.
With the new generation of workers emerging in the workforce, it is important to
understand them and how they differ from previous generations. Gen Z is:
• Very “connected”, they use technology for both entertainment and education.
• Fond of communicating face-to-face, but researchers find that their attention
span is much shorter than other generations.
• Valuing the ethics of the companies they choose to work for/ support.
• Great at multi-tasking and blending work/play.
• Very resourceful/ entrepreneurial, with many wanting to own businesses.
Understanding the new generation of workers can help employers be successful
when it comes to hiring them. This is incredibly important. By next year Gen Z will
account for 20% of the current workforce. To appeal to Gen Z employees, employers
should know that they value financial security, diversity, and flexibility. Some
employers are offering virtual internships, tuition assistance, and flexible career paths
to attract Gen Z to their companies.
Generations Z: How They Impact the Workforce
VCSU Communication and Fine Arts Building
It is an exciting time to be a Viking! On May 2nd
, 2019
Governor Doug Burgum signed a bill to grant $32 million
to fund a new Communication and Fine Arts Building!
This new building will replace Foss Hall and will allow
the arts, music, and communication programs to be
together in one space. It will also be farther away from
the river and be protected by the permanent flood walls
that are already in place. This new building will be built west of the Student Center.
Ground breaking, naming and construction start will be released at a later date.
