BY JACQUELINE HOUGHTHE DAILY HERALD
Darlene Jernigan will wear two hats during the upcoming Roanoke Valley Woman Expo.
For one, she will be a vendor displaying items from the boutique that is within Barnes and Jernigan Jewelers.
“I look forward to attending as a female,” Jernigan, manager of Barnes and Jernigan. “A lot of my hours are confined to the store. It will allow me a chance to see a lot of things in one spot.”
And for her and others, a ticket to the second annual expo will be the Ultimate Girls’ Night Out with a fashion show, health screenings and many opportunities to shop.
“I see it as an opportunity to myself, a gift,” Jernigan said. The event is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Kirkwood Adams Community
Center, 1100 Hamilton St. in Roanoke Rapids.“I believe in supporting the community, and I want them to support me,”
Jernigan said. Attendees will have a chance to see various items offered at the boutique
inside of Barnes and Jernigan Jewelers.“We wanted to let people know we not only sell fine jewelry, but offer gift
items and everyday accessories,” she said. The boutique, which opened in October, offers fashion jewelry, scarves,
shoes and designer jewelry lines. The Daily Herald Advertising Director Carol Crittendon, one of the Expo’s
organizers, said Thursday is a chance for women to do something nice for themselves.
“It will be a night to celebrate women, have a good time with friends and learn about various products,” she said.
There will be entertainment from female recording group Eyes of Emiline,
along with a fashion show by The Quality Shop. There will be giveaways and fashion makeovers. There will be plenty of opportunities to shop.
“You will have the opportunity to shop for products available and not available in the Roanoke Valley,” Crittendon said.
Vendors include Phoenix Trading, The Bath Place, Miche Bags, Initial Outfitters, Ward Speciality Pharmacy, Barnes and Jernigan, TraciLynn Fash-ion Jewelry, Ruby Ward’s LKG Consulting, Diva Lace Wigs, Wine Shop at Home, and Body, Mind and Soul.
With food demonstrations by Mary Sherwood Lake Living, Crittendon said attendees should prepare to stay a while. To make it an all-around event, food vendors will be on hand to provide many treats.
“They can taste, for an inexpensive price, some very great food,” Crit-tendon said.
Tickets are $5 and are available at The Daily Herald, Mary Sherwood Lake Living and Amy’s Hallmark, or you can call 252-537-2505 ext. 225 or go online at RoanokeValleyWoman.com.
In addition to having fun, Publisher Titus Workman sees a serious side to the Expo.
Professionals from Halifax Regional will be there to do various health screenings, such as blood pressure and blood sugar checks.
“Sometimes it is not always convenient for health screenings,” he said. “But here, they can stop for a few minutes.”
