I. GSMF Introduction

- What is Global Student Mentoring Forum?This� is� a� forum� made� up� of� highly� intelligent�

and� creative� foreign� students� from� different� parts�

of� the� world� currently� studying� in� Korean�

Universities.� The� association� was� formed� by�

Professor� Chung� Tai� Myoung� (정태명� 교수님)� of�

the� department� of� 정보통신대학� in� 성균관대학교�

(Sungkyunkwan� University).� The� aim� of� GSMF� is�

to� create� a� leveling� platform� for� international�

students� to� get� together� at� least� once� a� month,�

learn� about� themselves� as� well� as� the� different�

sponsors� of� the� forum� who� take� turns� to� host�

the� monthly� general� meetings.� During� the�

general� meetings,� GSMF� students� are� given� a�

tour� of� the� host� company,� treated� to� sumptuous�

dinners,� students� also� learn� about� the� activities�

of� host� companies� as� well� as� internship�

opportunities.� The� second� section� of� the�

meeting� is� learning� about� different� cultures� of�

some� students� as� well� as� familiarizing� with�

upcoming� events� of� GSMF.�

GSMF� has� successfully� maintained� winter� and�

summer� camps� where� about� 30� to� 50� students�

are� selected� to� participate� for� free.� Such� camps�

are� usually� a� 2� nights� three� days� trip� and� the�

students� including� some�mentors� use� such� events�

to� unwind� and� get� to� know� each� other� better.�

GSMF� has� a� strong� tradition� of� giving� out�

various� captivating� gifts� to� all� students� present�

during� general� meetings� courtesy� of� sponsors�

and� mentors.

The� average� attendance� rate� of� every� meeting� is�

about� 120� students.�

GSMF� also� organizes� extracurricular� activities� such� as�

rural� volunteer� programs,� K-live� shows� and� dinners.�

Other� events� such� as� sport� activities,� field� trips,� essay�

writing� competitions� just� to� mention� a� few� are� part�

of� the� 2015� upcoming� events� that� the� forum� has�

laid� out� for� its� loyal� and� well� deserving� members.�

During� summer� and� winter� vacations,� Curriculum�

Vitae’s� are� accepted� from� different� GSMF� students�

who� wish� to� take� part� in� internship� programs.� The�

documents� are� then� forwarded� to� GSMF� sponsor�

companies� depending� on� the� choice� of� the�

applicants.� If� they� are� lucky,� such� students� are�

selected� to� work� as� interns� for� eight� weeks.� There�

undoubtedly� are� pressing� needs� for� GSMF� to� improve�

the� number� of� students� who� are� taken� in� as� interns�

biannually� because,� currently� the� numbers� are� a� far�

cry� from� what� it� should� be� considering� the� number�

of� dedicated� and� smart� GSMF� students� who� apply�

for� internship� positions.

GSMF� continues� to� enjoy� the� undivided� and�

unending� support� of� its� wonderful� sponsors� and�

mentors� who� contribute� immensely� to� the� successful�

and� smooth� running� of� the� forum.� Sponsors� of�

GSMF STUDENTS GETS TREATED TO

A SUPERB 2015 WINTER SKI CAMP AT PHOENIX PARK

Koreans usually think of Christmas whenever they experience the first snow of the year but after the Christmas period is over, they are engulfed with the feeling of a ski and snowboard experience offered by high standard ski camps. Every year, GSMF students are given the opportunity to enjoy two wonderful camp experiences during winter and summer periods and this year was no exception. The 2015 GSMF winter Ski camp was held at Phoenix Park from 8th to 10th of February. A total of thirty eight students were treated to an all-expense paid fun packed two night three days ski and snowboard event thanks to the wonderful sponsors of the forum.

Majority of the students arrived the park before 12pm on the first day and they were immediately issued their name tags, GSMF hoodies, food and elevator tags before heading out for lunch. Phoenix Park was filled with over 500 ski and snow board lovers comprising of families, individuals and groups who came to have fun. The food court had the options of either ordering from the side food stores or eating the food provided by the park’s cooks for those who included meals in their payment package. After lunch, all GSMF participants reported back to the group’s assigned meeting venue where the GSMF volunteer staffs with the supervision of Mrs. Lee helped the attendees get their ski and snow board gears. You could tell

from the heavy smiles on the faces of participants that they were really excited to go make wonderful memories with friends out in the snow. Once everyone geared up, they were divided into five groups with volunteer translators who helped the park instructors teach participants how to ski and snow board. It was very cold and few students went back to their rooms after some minutes but majority of the students were having so much fun that the cold did not matter.

It was really amazing that 90% of the members had never skied or snow boarded before in their lives. It made them even more enthusiastic and willing to learn the skills and tricks of both sports. Though the time for skiing and snowboarding for the first

day was two hours, many students headed back outside after diner to continue practicing.

Professor Chung and Professor Park were also at the winter camp and I must say they really did spice up the event. After dinner and a little resting time, all GSMF members and professors reassembled at the seminar room for the evening activities. Professor Chung gave the welcome speech and also some words of advice to everyone present after which, one of the committee leaders Esther gave an interactive presentation about perception to help kick start the evening activities. It was really nice to see members listen and contribute to the topic and immediately after the discussions, the game night started. Sujin and Esther randomly divided everyone including professors into four teams namely Team G, S, M, F then, a team

of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Indian friends led by Imrose introduced the first game for the evening called Kabbadi. It is a very popular and interesting game enjoyed by family and friends. It is usually played by two teams consisting of about 4 to 7 persons in each team competing for the team which can successfully go over to the rival’s side while continuously chanting Kabbadi in a single breath, touch any person in the rival team and successfully cross back to their own side without being held back in the rival team’s court. The point distribution system was 400 points for 1st position, 300points for 2nd position , 200 points for 3rd position and a hundred points for the fourth position per game. Also additional 50 points was given to the most cheerful and organized teams respectively.

After the Kabbadi game, a catch ball game was played. This game was very fascinating as the final rounds saw the competitive nature of the guys come to light as they tried to make sure their teams got the highest points. Lastly, a Korean traditional game called Yutnori was played. This I must say was a nice way to round off the game competition session as everyone enjoyed the game and teams saw their victories taken away from them just as they were about to reach the final stage. It was fun and Team G won the overall game competition.

After everyone rested for a bit, Professor Chung took students to enjoy Karaoke and bowling at a plaza located very close to the park. He also ensured that refreshments such as drinks and snacks were provided. Students and Professor Chung sang and danced to different songs after which, some

persons who wanted to go bowling went to the bowling session to have more fun. Thanks to the five mission tasks that was dished out to attendees before they left their homes for the park, a great number of pictures was taken at every point of each event by so many students. Karaoke and bowling came to an end around 1.30am and everyone chatted, teased and laughed as they strolled back to their rooms to call it a day.

As expected, many students did not bother waking up early for breakfast the next day however by lunch time

they were up and ready to go have another captivating experience. This time, they had longer hours to ski and snow board and they did justice to the freedom given to them. On the second day many students who could not ski or snow board before coming to the park, where getting their acts right.

Also, some students in a bid to challenge themselves abandoned the beginners track for a more difficult intermediate and professional track. At about 2pm, everyone gathered at the top of the highest mountain called Mount Blanc with the help of the cable cars for a group picture which by the way, was one of the mission tasks given to participants. After taking so many nice pictures with the beautiful scenery of Mount Blanc, a few students snow boarded and skied from the top all the way down to the beginner’s level while the remaining students returned using the cable cars.

After dinner that night, some persons used their free time for more skiing and snowboarding some used theirs to bond more with friends by chatting and drinking while some others played cards with their roomies while taking pictures, chatting and cracking up with jokes. Everyone was undoubtedly having a great time and by 9.30pm, they were all treated to pizza, chicken and cola thanks to Professor Chung.

The last day of the camp saw many students sad to leave the fun they were having behind at the park hence they ensured they stayed till the camp’s rental shops were about closing by 5pm before turning in their gears. A few others decided they had had more than enough fun hence they headed out a bit earlier using the 11am or 2pm bus. The most intriguing thing was that in just two nights and three days, people had formed what scientist call covalent bonds amongst themselves and also the GSMF Facebook page had more than six hundred photos, likes and comments uploaded on it.

One needs no soothsayer to know and agree that the 2015 GSMF WINTER SKI CAMP was a huge success and I honestly urge students who missed out this time to ensure they partake in the next GSMF major event which is the 2015 GSMF SUMMER CAMP.

III. Interview with the Founder of Global student mentoring forum

AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE FOUNDER OFGLOBAL STUDENT MENTORING FORUM (GSMF), SOUTH

KOREA

Our special guest today has been a faculty member of the School of Information and Communicationsat Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) in Korea since 1995. He directs the Information ManagementTechnology Laboratory in his capacity as the Head of Software Department. His areas of expertise areInformation Security, Security & Information Management and Protocols on Next Generation Networksand Mobile internet.

He worked as a systems manager at Waldner and Co., Oak Brook Illinois(1984-1987), USA. From 1987-1990, he worked as a scientist in theNetwork Technology Department at Bolt Beranek & Newman Labs.,Cambridge, Massachusetts (1987-1990), USA where his major responsibilitywas the design and development of Automated Network Managementsystems (ANM).

In 1995, he graduated from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indianawith a Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering. He has published 10technical books including a book titled “Overview of Internet Security” andmore than 500 referred research papers. He has chaired many technicalprograms including but not limited to conferences and workshops such asAPNOMS, ICAT, IT21 and UNESCAP conference both at domestic andinternational levels amongst others.

He was once the president of Korea Information Processing Society, amember of the Presidential Advisory Committee on e-government and an expert member of thePresidential Advisory Committee on Science and Technology in Korea. He also has held other positionssuch as senior member of IEEE, evaluation committee member of Ministry of Knowledge andEconomics, The CEO of Silvernet-News, an advisory committee member of several public and privateorganizations including Internet Crime Investigation Center of Seoul Public Prosecutor's Office, FinancialServices Commission, National Cyber Security Center, Electronics and Telecommunication ResearchInstitute, National Information Authority, Samsung Data Systems, SK Telecom etc.

He has been the vice chair of Working Party on Security and Privacy in Digital Economy (formerlyknown as Information Security & Privacy), OECD since 2005. He has continuously served as amoderator in the ministerial meeting of Word Information and Communications Summit (WICS) since2008, and he has headed the Consortium of Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) which hasover 400 member companies.

He currently holds strategic positions such as, President of Chief Privacy Officers Forum, boardmember of Korea National Information Society Agency, member of Information Strategy PlanningCommittee of Korea, news commentator on KBS and a news reporter for Electronic times.

For his tremendous works and achievements, he was given a 2nd degree decoration by the Koreangovernment in 2007. He also has received other awards from the PrimeMinister of Korea in 2000, the director of National Intelligence Servicein 2001 and from the Chairman of Korea Communications commissionin 2008. He is also married to a very beautiful damsel and haswonderful kids. With such a profound portfolio, he is undoubtedly anexemplary role model for both the youths and other citizens.

Q1: Why did you form GSMF forum?

Q: 왜 GSMF를 모집하게 되었나요?

A: I found that we have over90,000 foreign students withno special or well organizedwelfare for them. When I wasin the United States, I had nosupport from the USgovernment or citizens. Thoughthere were few Koreans livingin the same region as I at thattime, the emotional supportwas next to nothing. Secondly,if you observe the global cycletoday, you will notice that theeconomic power is graduallymoving from Europe and America to other parts of the world. I believe we should begin to developgreat relationships amongst ourselves and I think that creating a forum where international studentsfrom very diverse background can meet, develop and share ideas together, is a perfect way offorming this relationship. When the forum was formed, doctor O Yong of S-oil was the chairman ofthe forum. That made it easy to obtain funds for the program. Currently GSMF monthly meetings areheld once a month and I must say that we have very enthusiastic and highly supportive teamleaders, members, mentors and sponsors of the group.

Đáp: Tôi nhận thấy rằng có hơn 90,000 sinh viên quốc tế đang học tập tại Hàn Quốc nhưng không có một hỗ trợ đặc biệt nào dành cho sinh viên. Khi tôi còn học ở Mỹ, tôi không nhận được bất kỳ sự hỗ trợ nào từ chính phủ Mỹ hay người địa phương. Chỉ có một số ít người Hàn Quốc sống cùng khu vực tôi sinh sống nên sự hỗ trợ rất là ít. Thứ hai, nhận thấy với việc toàn cầu hóa ngày nay, sức mạnh kinh tế đang dần chuyển động từ Châu Âu và Mỹ sang những khu vực khác của thế giới. Tôi tin rằng chúng ta nên bắt đầu bằng việc phát triển những mối quan hệ tốt giữa chúng ta vì thế, tôi nghĩ đến việc tạo ra một diễn đàn nơi các sinh viên quốc tế với nhiều lĩnh vực khác nhau có thể gặp mặt, trao đổi ý kiến và phát triển đó là một cách hữu ích để hình thành những mối quan hệ. Khi bắt đầu diễn đàn, Tiến sĩ O Yong của S-oil là chủ tịch của hội, điều đó dễ dàng hơn trong việc nhận được quỹ cho chương trình. Hiện tại, GSMF gặp mặt mỗi tháng một lần và tôi phải nói rằng hiện nay chúng ta đang có một đội ngũ các bạn trưởng nhóm, thành viên, người hỗ trợ và các nhà tài trợ đầy nhiệt huyết và năng động.

현재 한국에 90000명의 외국 학생들이 잘 짜여지거나 특별하게 조직된 도움 없이 지내고 있습니다. 제가 미국에 있을 때, 저는 미국 정부나 시민들로부터 아무런 지원을 받지 못했습니다. 그 당시 몇몇 한국인들이 저와 같은 지역에 같이 살기는 했으나, 감정적인 교류는 거의 없다 싶이 했습니다. 그리고 오늘 날의 세계 흐름을 보면, 경제적인 힘이 유럽과 미국에서 세계의 다른 나라들로 옮겨가고 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 우리의 좋은 관계를 발전 시켜나가야 하며, 다양한 배경을 가진 국제 학생들이 서로 만나서 생각을 함께 공유하는 것이 이러한 관계를 만들어가는 완벽한 방법이라고 생각합니다.

처음 이 모임이 만들어졌을 때, 회장님은 S-Oil의 오명 박사님이셨습니다. 그 덕에 이 프로그램을 위한 경제적 지원을 원활하게 받을 수 있었습니다. 현재 GSMF 회의는 한 달에 한번 있으며, 우리는 정말 열정적이고 지원을 아낌없이 해주시는 팀장님과, 모임원들, 멘토, 그룹의 조력자들로 이루어져있다는 점을 강조하고 싶습니다.

Q2: What is the current number of GSMF members?

Q: 현재 GSMF의 멤버 수는 어떻게 되나요?

A: Korea is not the permanent home for99% of the students who school heretherefore every year we have studentsreturning back to their countries afterthe end of their programs. With theinclusion of such students, we currentlyhave a little over a thousand GSMFmembers and over a hundred studentsattend the GSMF general monthlymeetings.

Đáp: Hàn Quốc không phải là nơi an cư của hầu hết 99% sinh viên quốc tế vì thế mỗi năm sẽ có nhiều sinh viên trở về nước sau khi hoàn thành khóa học. Bao gồm những sinh viên đã từng tham gia, hiện nay GSMF có khoảng hơn 1000 thành viên và hơn 100 thành viên tham dự các cuộc họp hàng tháng của GSMF.

99%의 학생이 외국에 고향을 두고 있기 때문에, 매년 학생들이 각자의 계획이 끝나는대로 고국으로 돌아가게 됩니다. 이러한 인원을 모두 통틀어 현재 GSMF에서는 1000명을 조금 넘는 인원이 있으며, 매 달 있는 회의에 100명 이상의 학생들이 참석하고 있습니다.

Q3: What will you like to suggest to GSMF members as regards their stay in Korea?

Q: 한국에 머물고 있는 GSMF 멤버들에게 어떤 조언을 해주고 싶으신가요?

A: First, I would say enjoy your student life here and develop a great relationship with moreinternational students with this wonderful opportunity.

Secondly, I would say make sure to learn something other than academics while in Korea. Learnabout the Korean history, culture, language and way of life. This aspect is definitely one I did notfully accomplish while schooling in the States. I did not utilize the opportunity I had to learn aboutthe culture and way of life of Americans. I taught in Sunday schools however, I strongly believe that,that was not sufficient enough.

Thirdly, I want to urge all GSMF members and international students in general to design and shapetheir future. I believe that we have been chosen as ambassadors for our various countries. Make sureyou plan your future and set the bar very high because when you do, it makes you work twice ashard as you would normally. Even though you may not achieve 100% of your set goals, you willachieve at least 95% and that is a superb achievement.

Lastly, I urge everyone to always stay in touch with friends and the GSMF team as a whole evenafter returning back to your country. You never can tell who amongst us will become the nextpresident or minister etc. and he or she might end up needing your services. Currently, we arekeeping in touch with members of the GSMF team through the GSMF monthly newsletters.

Đáp: Đầu tiên, tôi muốn các bạn tận hưởng cuộc sống sinh viên ở đây và phát triển những mối quan hệ tốt với các sinh viên quốc tế khác vì đây là cơ hội rất tốt để làm điều này.

Thứ hai, Tôi muốn các bạn dành thời gian để học thêm những điều mới ngoài việc học ở trường. Hãy tìm hiểu về lịch sử của Hàn Quốc, văn hóa, ngôn ngữ và cách sống của người bản địa. Đây là điều mà tôi không làm khi còn học ở Mỹ. Tôi đã không có cơ hội để tìm hiểu về văn hóa và lối sống Mỹ. Tôi dạy ở trường Chúa Nhật tuy nhiên, điều này là không đủ.

Thứ ba, tôi muốn thách thức tất cả các thành viên của GSMF và sinh viên quốc tế chung trong việc lên kế hoạch cho tương lai của các bạn. Tôi tin tưởng rằng, tất cả chúng ta đều được chọn là đại sứ của các nước khác nhau. Hãy chắc chắn là các bạn lập kế hoạch cho tương lai và hãy đặt mục tiêu thật cao vì khi bạn làm như thế, các bạn sẽ làm việc gấp hai lần những gì các bạn đang làm hiện tại. Thậm chí dù bạn có thể không đạt được 100% mục tiêu của bạn đã đề ra nhưng ít nhất cũng đạt được 95% đó là một thành quả đáng trân trọng rồi.

Cuối cùng, tôi thách thức các bạn giữ mối quan hệ với những người bạn và các thành viên của GSMF ngay cả khi bạn đã về nước. Chúng ta không thể biết được rằng ai đó trong số các bạn có thể trở thành tổng thống hay bộ trưởng và có thể sẽ cần những dịch vụ của bạn. Hiện tại, chúng ta đang giữ liên lạc với các thành viên của GSMF bằng thư tin tức mỗi tháng.

일단 첫번째로는 여기에서의 학생 생활을 즐기고 이런 좋은 기회를 통해 많은 외국 친구들과 좋은 관계를 맺을 것을 얘기해 주고 싶습니다.

두번째로는, 한국에 있는 동안 학업 외에 다른 것들을 배웠으면 합니다. 한국의 역사, 문화, 언어 그리고 삶의 방식 등 이러한 것들은 학교에서만 배울 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 제가 미국에 있을 때는 이런 기회를 잘 잡지 못 했습니다. 일요 학교를 나갔었지만 그것만으로는 너무도 부족했다고 생각합니다.

세번째로, GSMF 학생들에게 자신만의 미래를 계획하고 만들기를 간절히 바랍니다. 저는 우리가 각 나라의 대표로서 선택되어 왔다고 생각합니다. 여러분의 미래를 높은 기준으로 확실하게 세우기를 바랍니다. 그래야 보통 때 보다 두배의 노력을 할 수 있습니다. 비록 목표를 100% 만족하지 못할 지라도, 여러분은 적어도 95%를 이룰 것이며 그것만으로도 굉장히 훌륭한 성과가 될 것입니다.

마지막으로, 고국으로 돌아간 후에도 저는 GSMF 멤버 전체가 꾸준히 연락을 하며 지내기를 바랍니다. 여러분들이 각 나라의 대통령이나 장관이 되어 서로에게 도움을 요청 할지도 모를 일입니다.

현재 우리는 GSMF 월간 신문을 통하여 우리 멤버끼리 소식을 주고 받고 있습니다.

Q4: Sir, I observed that the forum currently does not have any permanent staff why is that so?

A: It’s simply because I believe that we do not need permanent staff for GSMF. We have graduatestudents who volunteer as committee members and corporate staff to help run the program and bothcategories of volunteers are supervised by my secretary Mrs. Lee. Secondly, one of our majorsupporters will be reducing the financial support we are receiving from them soon and I know thatwe need monthly salaries for permanent staff as opposed to free services from student volunteers.These volunteers are also learning as they render their services and that opportunity will becompletely eliminated if we hire permanent staff.

또한 저희가 받고 있는 경제적 지원이 줄어 들 것으로 예상되는 상황에서, 고정 스태프가 있을 경우 봉사활동 학생과 달리 일정 급여를 지급해야하는 문제가 있습니다. 봉사학생들은 봉사과정에서 많은 것을 배우고 있고 이는 고정 스태프 비용 문제를 해결해줍니다.

Q5: Sir, aside from the monthly general meetings, what other events is been incorporated into the GSMF program?

Q: 매달 정기 모임 외에, 다른 어떤 행사가 GSMF에서 진행 되어왔나요?

A: We currently have the yearly volunteer events which started last year. About 35 GSMF studentsvolunteered for the Korea rural farmers volunteer program that held at Chujeongju-do during lastyear summer. The students helped the farmers in weeding, planting, watering of crops just tomention a few. The program was aired by local television stations. Also last year, we had the k-liveevent where students were entertained by hologram performances of various Kpop stars. We also hadthe ITU potential plenary meeting at Busan but very few students participated in that. At GSMF, Iensure that ideas for new events are welcomed so long as, it is not too expensive and it is beneficialto students. Also all students must not attend all programs because their main aim of coming toKorea is to study and sometimes, laboratory tasks or classes may not afford the students opportunityto come for all events.

Đáp: Hiện tại chúng ta có hoạt động tình nguyện diễn ra hàng năm bắt đầu từ năm vừa rồi. 35 thành viên GSMF đã tham gia hoạt động tình nguyện để giúp đỡ cho những nông dân vùng nông thôn ở Chujeongju mùa hè vừa rồi. Các bạn đã giúp đỡ trong việc gieo hạt, trồng cây, tưới nước…Chương trình tình nguyện này đã được đưa tin trên các đài truyền hình địa phương. Và trong năm vừa qua cũng có hoạt động về cuộc sống ở Hàn Quốc dành cho sinh viên mà các bạn đã được thưởng thức biểu diễn ba chiều của nhiều ngôi sao Kpop. Chúng ta cũng tham dự phiên họp tiềm năng ITU ở Busan những chỉ một số ít các bạn tham dự thôi. Với GSMF, tôi chắc chắn rằng ý tưởng về những hoạt động mới luôn được đón nhận nếu nó không quá nhiều chi phí và phục vụ cho lợi ích của sinh viên. Và ngoài ra thì tất cả sinh viên không cần thiết phải tham dự tất cả các chương trình bởi vì mục đích chính của các bạn ở Hàn Quốc là học và thỉnh thoảng những công việc ở phòng thí nghiệm hay các lớp học có thể không cho phép các sinh viên tham dự những hoạt động như vậy.

우리는 작년 부터 시작한 연례 봉사활동을 진행합니다. 작년 여름에 청주에서 약 35명의 GSMF 학생들이 한국 시골 농장을 위하여 봉사활동을 했습니다. 일부만 말하자면 학생들은 농부 아저씨를 도와 곡식의 씨 뿌리기, 심기, 물 주기를 하였습니다. 또한 부산에서 열린 ITU 회의에도 참여를 했는데, 적은 수의 학생만이 참여를 하였습니다. GSMF에서는 비용이 적절한 선에서 학생에게 유익한 행사에 대한 아이디어가 있다면 환영합니다. 하지만 모든 학생들이 GSMF의 모든 행사에 참여할 필요는 없습니다. 학생들은 한국에 와서 해야할 공부나 연구실 일이 있기 때문에 이러한 행사에 참여하기 힘들 수도 있을 것입니다.

A: My main vision for the forum is to help GSMFmembers complete their programs successfully whilecreating a valuable platform for them to come togetherand form long lasting relationships with others fromdifferent countries.

Q7: Sir, I would like for us to divert a little, do you have Vietnamese students in your laboratory at SKKU?

A: No, I do not have any Vietnamese students in my laboratory also I do not give special treatmentto any one from any particular country. I take everyone equally but maybe I may give a bit more topeople from Rwanda because I am the special adviser to their president on internet security (laughs)

Q8: Currently, we have very low success rates as regards the number of GSMF students that are currently being accepted by sponsor companies for internship programs, what are you doing about that?

Hỏi: Thực tế hiên nay là tỷ lệ thành công rất thấp trong số những thành viên của GSMF được chấp nhận vào các chương trình thực tập của các công ty hỗ trợ, vậy giải pháp của Giáo sư cho việc này như thế nào?

Q: 현재 GSMF 학생들의 후원 회사의 인터쉽 합격률이 매우 저조한데요, 이에 대해 어떤 조치를 하고 계신가요?

A: I admit it is partly my fault. I have not been spending as much time as I should in monitoringGSMF student’s applications for internship opportunities. Also, there are some challenges in the sensethat, big sponsor companies have lots of internship opportunities but huge selection procedures whilesmall companies have less selection procedures but very little internship opportunities hence I am leftwith mainly medium scale companies. Starting this year, I am going to change the internshipapplication process for GSMF members. I have directed that a homepage focusing on internshipopportunities where only GSMF students can upload their credentials and sponsor companies candirectly access these credentials and make their choices from what the students have submitted, bedesigned.

One of the major limitations in the acceptance of GSMF members for internship opportunities is dueto the fact that, I personally do not know the capacity and intelligence levels of all GSMF students.Another limitation is due to the fact that, most of these companies prefer long term internship of sixto twelve months compared to the two months internship programs.

I would like to emphasize that just good grades would not make me recommend any one forinternship opportunities. I have to see a combination of excellent grades, high enthusiasm in all giventask, excellent intelligence, prompt and excellent execution of tasks. When I see any GSMF student(s)that meets all these qualities, I will personally recommend such student(s) to one of our sponsor

companies depending on the student(s) area of expertise. So thisyear, we will be focusing on match making internship programsso as to ensure students get internships in suitable companies inline with their area of study and expertise.

Đáp: Tôi thừa nhận đây là lỗi của tôi. Tôi đã không dành đủ thời gian nên có cho việc giám sát những hồ sơ của các bạn sinh viên của GSMF với những cơ hội thực tập. Ngoài ra, có một thách thức là các công ty lớn có nhiều cơ hội thực tập nhưng là có một qui trình tuyển chọn cồng kềnh trong khi những công ty nhỏ thì cơ hội thực tập quá ít dù qui trình tuyển chọn đơn giản hơn do đó tôi đang chú trọng đến những công ty có qui mô vừa. Bắt đầu từ năm nay, tôi sẽ có một thay đổi mới trong phương thức tham gia thực tập ở các công ty. Tôi trực tiếp tạo một trang chủ tập trung vào những cơ hội thực tập và các thành viên GSMF có thể cập nhập cơ sỡ dữ liệu về lĩnh vực học, kinh nghiệm, khả năng và định hướng của mình và các công ty có thể dễ dàng tiếp cận chọn lựa những ứng viên phù hợp cho các cơ hội thực tập dựa trên cơ sở dữ liệu của thành viên.

Một trong những hạn chế chính trong việc chấp nhận các thành viên của GSMF cho những cơ hội thực tập là cá nhân tôi không biết rõ mức độ khả năng của tất cả các thành viên của GSMF. Ngoài ra một hạn chế khác nữa là hầu hết các công ty cung cấp những chương trình thực tập 06 tháng hay 01 năm so với những mong muốn của các bạn là thực tập 02 tháng.

Tôi muốn nhấn mạnh rằng không chỉ điểm số tốt thì tôi có thể giới thiệu bất kỳ bạn nào cho những cơ hội thực tập. Tôi phải thấy sự kết hợp của điểm số tốt, nhiệt huyết trong tất cả những công việc, thông minh, dự đoán tốt và hoàn thành kịp thời xuất sắc những nhiệm vụ của các bạn được giao. Bất kỳ thành viên nào của GSMF hội tụ đủ các yếu tố đó, tôi sẽ cá nhân giới thiệu những sinh viên đó cho các công ty hỗ trợ của chúng ta dựa theo lĩnh vực chuyên môn của sinh viên.

Vì thế, trong năm nay chúng ta sẽ tập trung vào việc liên kết những cơ hội thực tập để chắc chắn rằng các thành viên có thể có được cơ hội thực tập phù hợp với lĩnh vực học và chuyên môn của thành viên.

Үнэхээр дурдсан бүх болзолыг бүрэн хангасан чадвартай оюутан таарах юм бол тухайн хүний хүссэн мэргэжил салбарт нь нийцүүлэн бидний хөрөнгө оруулагч компанид би биечлэн санал болгон дэмжих болно. 여기에 어느정도 제 책임이 있다고 인정합니다. GSMF 학생들의 인턴쉽 신청에 더 신경을 썼어야 하는데 그만큼 시간을 할애하지 못하고 있었습니다. 큰 후원 기업의 경우 많은 인터쉽 기회를 갖는 반면 많은 선발 과정을 거쳐야 합니다. 반대로 작은 후원 기업의 경우 적은 선발 과정을 거치는 대신 적은 인턴쉽 기회를 갖게 됩니다. 이런 이유로 중소 기업들을 염두해두고 있습니다. 이번 해를 시작으로 GSMF 학생들을 위하여 인턴쉽 접수 과정을 바꿀 계획입니다. 저는 GSMF 학생들이 홈페이지에 자신의 자격증을 올려 후원 회사들이 곧바로 접근할 수 있게끔 감독해 왔습니다. 제 개인적으로 GSMF 학생들의 능력과 재능이 어느 정도 되는지 알 수 없었습니다. 그 점이 하나의 주된 요인이었습니다. 다른 이유로는 회사들이 2개월의 단기보다는 6개월에서 1년정도의 장기 인턴쉽을 선호한다는 점이었습니다.

제가 강조하고 싶은 점은 단지 좋은 학점만으로는 제가 인턴쉽 추천을 하기가 여렵다는 것입니다. 저는 훌륭한 학점과, 주어진 일에 대한 강한 열정, 뛰어난 지능, 신속하고 훌륭한 일의 수행 등을 봐야합니다. 이러한 점들을 갖춘 GSMF 학생을 본다면, 저는 학생의 전문 분야에 따라 그 학생을 개인적으로 추천해줄 것입니다.

그래서 이번해에, 학생들의 전문 분야에 따른 적합한 회사의 인턴쉽을 갖도록 집중하겠습니다.

Q9: Sir we know that we currently have heads of various committees however do you think we need an election system where these leaders can be changed after a certain period of time?

Q: 현재 다양한 부서의 부서장들이 있는데, 일정 기간마다 위원장을 뽑는 선거제 도입에 대해 어떻게 생각하십니까?

A: I strongly believe that we do not need an election system. As I mentioned in the beginningsection of this interview, majority of the students studying in Korea return to their countries afterthe completion of their programs, GSMF members inclusive. Also, the current leader of variouscommittees in the forum are highly energetic, enthusiastic and passionate individuals and I believethat they can execute their tasks perfectly and when they are ready to return back to their countries,I will want them to nominate someone who they strongly believe can continue the wonderful taskthat they have already started.

Another area I want to quickly mention is that we will be inviting more Koreans to the forumbecause it is a Global Student Mentoring Forum and not an International Students Mentoring Forumhence we need to raise the number of Korean participants to 10-20% of our members. Who knowssome of the potential Korean members may end up being heads of some committees.

An important lesson committee members learn during the course of their tenure is the ability towork with people from different nationalities and culture. This will go a long way in helping them intheir career life.

Ai biết được một số sinh viên Hàn Quốc tiềm năng có thể trở thành những người đứng đầu ở các nhóm. Một bài học quan trọng mà các thành viên quản trị có thể học được đó là khả năng làm việc với những thành viên đến từ những quốc gia và văn hóa khác nhau. Điều này sẽ giúp các bạn có những bước tiến trong công việc sau này.

반면에 간략히 말하면, 우리는 더 많은 한국 학생들을 초대할 것 입니다. 이 모임은 외국 학생 멘토링 모임이 아닌 국제 학생 멘토링 모임이기 때문에 우리는 멤버의 10-20%를 한국 학생들로 채울 필요가 있습니다. 이 한국 학생 중 어떠한 위원회의 위원장이 되어 있을 지 모르는 일이기 때문입니다.

그들의 재임기간 중요한 배울 점은 각기 다른 나라와 문화에서 온 사람들과 일을 하는 능력입니다. 이점은 앞으로 그들의 인생에서 큰 도움이 될 것입니다.

Q10: Lastly, what is your advice to GSMF members and International students in general?

Q: 마지막으로 GSMF 학생들과 국제 학생들에게 조언해주고 싶은 것이 무엇입니까?

A: I urge all international students to always aim high and set their dreams very high even though itmay seem too high. I also advice that they capitalize on making global connections and this startswith interacting and forming long lasting relationships with other students from different countries.The third advice will be for them to shun procrastination and act now while ensuring that they carry

every act with great enthusiasm. Lastly, I encourage them to never waste their time because, nomatter how much time they may think they have, time is never enough. I am currently thechairman of 19 different committees and people always ask me how? My answer is always thesame. I ensure that I use my time well. It is very sad that some persons use only 3 to 4 hours outof the 24 hours we have in a day, for productive things. It is simple math. If such persons increasethe number of productive hours to say 10 hours a day then, they will achieve more than twice ofwhat they already are achieving. In life, you will need helpers in form of family, friends, teachers etc.so ensure you use those opportunities well.

My greatest philosophy is to always enjoy whatever you are doing. If you do not enjoy doing it thendo not do it. By enjoy, I do not mean in the aspect of clubbing, partying, playing with friends etc. Imean in the sense of having fun while doing what needs to be done in a passionate way becauseyou will benefit from such a task in the future. Take for instance studying, even though it can bereally stressful, if you are passionate about your course of study then you would never be weigheddown by the stress. During my studies in America, I had huge financial and emotional challenges and

I survived those challenges by always focusing on thebright future I knew I would have if I completed mycourse of study successfully. That and the fact that I lovedmy major kept me going and up till this very moment Ihave never regretted making such decisions because it hasbeen wonderful and am grateful for it.

Đáp: Như tôi đã nói trước đây, tôi thách thức tất cả các bạn sinh viên quốc tế hãy đặt cho mình những mục tiêu cao và ước mơ thật cao thậm chí nó có thể quá cao. Trong cuộc sống bạn cần những người giúp đỡ là gia đình, bạn bè, thầy cô giáo…vì thế bạn phải chắc chắn rằng bạn sử dụng những cơ hội đó hiệu quả.

Một triết lý của tôi là hãy tận hưởng những gì bạn đang làm. Nếu bạn không tận hưởng thì bạn không thể làm được. Chỉ bằng cách tận hưởng, nhưng tôi không ám chỉ là những quán bar, tiệc tùng, bạn bè thâu đêm…Tôi muốn ám chỉ là sự vui vẻ trong những việc bạn cần phải làm theo một cách đam mê bởi vì bạn sẽ có được những lợi ích từ những công việc đó trong tương lai. DOKDO ISLAND

Dokdo Island also known as Takeshima by Japanese people is a special Island because of its unique strategic position and high economic potential. It has an Exclusive Economic Zone which is home to a variety of sea plants and animals such as Seaweed, Kelp, Sea Lions, Abalone, Alaskan Pollock and hydrate natural gas. It also symbolizes the colonial rule of Korea by the Japanese government and up till this day, it brings mixed reactions to both Koreans and Japanese anytime the Island’s ownership is been discussed. The claims by Japanese that the Island is rightfully theirs are

continuously met by very strong and stiff resistance from South Koreans who believe that legitimately have territorial sovereignty over the island given well studied historical evidence. With the intense heat that discussion of the Island brings, the pertinent question of “What Dokdo Island means for Koreans” becomes unavoidable?

There really is no 100% answer to the above question because even though Koreans have presented a really strong and convincing argument about the topic, some arguments made by the Japanese government is worth looking into hence they can’t be swept under the carpet. Exploring some historical and cultural claims and evidence made by both parties, one becomes aware of the fact that Japan’s claim of sovereignty of the Island is strongly based on the earliest cognizance of Takeshima which .records show that it started in 1905. Records show that a Japanese citizen named Nakai Yozaburo wanted to get a ten years lease of Dokdo Island for Sea Lions hunting purposes. Originally he wanted to seek the permit from the South Korean government but he was advised against it with argument that the Island belongs to Japan. This event was followed by the decision to annex the islets of the Island for military purposes mainly because of the Russo Japanese War, by the Director of the political Affairs Bureau in Japan, Yamaza Enjiro.

Some Japanese historians argue that Dokdo Island was without any owner in 1905 so Japan claimed it therefore it is Japan’s inherent territory.

Unfortunately, these claims are highly contradictory to the 1877 Japan prime minister’s directive which stated that Dokdo Island was not Japanese territory. Another contradiction to the above claims is that the claims of South Korea as the owner of the Island dates as far back as the Shilla Dynasty in 512 AD. In 1696, a Korean inspector named Jang Han Sang mentioned seeing Korea’s mountains from Chosun’s Ulleungdo Island. In that same year, Japan surrendered the possession of Ulleungdo Island to Korea after a dispute involving

Japanese fishermen on the island. A Korean researcher by name Ms. Yu Mi-Rim discovered two Japanese government documents namely Ordinance No. 24 of the Prime Minister’s Office,” dated June 6, 1951, and “Ordinance No. 4 of the Ministry of Finance,” dated February 13 1951 which precisely stated that, amongst islands adjacent to Japan, Jejudo, Ulleungdo and Dokdo (Takeshima) were excluded from the Japanese governmental and administrative authority, thus clearly affirming that the aforementioned islands are not part of Japan’s inherent territory.

Some past events have shown that some Koreans take the issue of the Island very seriously. In 2005, the Japanese Shimane prefecture announcement of a “Takeshima Day” was met with huge demonstration and protest by Koreans with some recorded extreme cases of a mother and son slicing off their own fingers and a man self-immolating himself. These actions are due to the unreserved passion some Koreans hold towards the issue of Dokdo Island.

Dokdo Island which is viewed by most Koreans as a key factor of their existence symbolizes a deep historical value to them and they some believe that losing the Island’s sovereignty to Japan is equivalent to the loss of Korea’s pride because they are convinced that the Island was annexed from them by Japan during the colonial rule (1910-1945) during which there are strong evidence that suggests that Koreans ere inhumanely treated by their colonial masters.

Secondly, handing over the ownership of the Island to Japan would be seen as giving Japan a free pass to avoid accepting responsibility for the war crimes they committed and into avoiding the penalties of their actions towards Koreans. Such action will definitely will be a bitter and constant reminder of how they surrendered to Japan in 1910 and how helpless they were to the predicaments that befell them as a result of Japan’s rule.

Another important aspect of the situation is the economic value of the island which cannot be under estimated as it consists of the rich natural resources and highly diverse aquatic

habitat present in the Island. The huge numbers of hydrate (a hydrocarbon that is a good alternative for oil) can help South Korea develop a strong energy sector which will boost the economy if explored. Gaining territorial sovereignty over Dokdo will also see Korea having maritime and Jurisdictional exclusivity as stated in Article 57 of the Preamble of the United Nations of the Law of the Sea.

Lastly is the strategic location of Dokdo which lies between Korea, China, Japan and Russia. South Korea is currently making good use of this advantage in monitoring activities of both Japan and Russia naval forces through the radar base stationed in the Island.

South Koreans are working hard to make establish a strong presence on the Island. In August 26, 2012, the Korea Basketball Association held a tournament game with four teams that consisted of high school players as well as a friendly match with guards of Dokdo Police Garrison.

Also since 1996, the South Korean military have held a 4-day Island defense exercise drill in a bid to familiarize themselves with the best strategy to defend the Island in case the need arises.

Dokdo is one of the symbols of South Korea’s freedom and pride hence one cannot help but think that the acceptance of Korea as the owner of the Island by the Japanese would go a long way in helping cement the strained relationship between these two strong Asia power house. Lots of awareness is been raised by Koreans to help enlighten the public about the sovereignty of Dokdo.

Hi, I am Imrose Bin Muhit, a student of ChungAng University. Traveling is my passion and I strongly feel that there really is nothing more comparable to that unique smell of a beach, the adventure of a new city, the culture and traditions of others, the flavors of international cuisines and the sound of an unfamiliar language. Meeting interesting and diverse people around the world, connecting with them and learning about their view of life has deeply enriched my knowledge of people all around the world in a way that words cannot express.

GSMF 2015 Winter Camp was an amazing experience. I was opportune to have fun with lots of foreign friends. Though I had a little mix up for me after I missed my bus ride to the ski resort, the barrier was immediately resolved with the help of Sujin Kwon (one of my best friends) who assisted me and ensured I got to the Ski Resort. I enjoyed Esther’s lecture on ‘Perception’, the South Asian game “Kabaddi” and Korean game “Yut-Nori”. I also had immeasurable amount of fun at Karaoke and bowling. Skiing was so adventurous and fun for me I ended up skiing into the night. In addition, the photo session at the top of the Mount Blanc was also fun and interesting. It was sad to leave the camp at the end of our stay because we had to break up our friendship bonding!

Overall, it was one of the best times in Korea for me.

GSMF MERIT BOARD

GSMF forum has various extracurricular activities organized occasionally for students hence the

participation of students in these events is highly encouraged. To help boost student’s

involvement in such events, the GSMF SNS committee came up with a brilliant idea to

accurately record and manage records of all individual participants of GSMF activities. Students

with the highest points will be given preference when it comes to been chosen as participants

for special events such as summer camp,

Winter Ski camps amongst others. Three criteria’s namely Interpretation, Newsletter contribution

and SNS postings are currently been used to evaluate students contributions and the points for

each criteria are 100, 100 and 50 respectively. We urge all GSMF students to actively

participate in all upcoming GSMF activities.
