Newsletter FRIDAY 2 nd February, 2018 SHREWSBURY HOUSE PRE-PREP NEW ARRIVALS IN NURSERY We are pleased to announce 3 healthy new arrivals!!! The Nursery children had a very big surprise this week. All the Nursery penguins disappeared and were nowhere to be found. The children hunted for them everywhere and finally they were spotted in a quiet area of the Nursery. The whole Nursery crept in quietly!! What were their penguins up to? Lots of suggestions followed and they reached the conclusion that they could be incubating eggs. The eggs were carefully handled and the children watched and waited. They prepared themselves by learning about how the baby penguins should be cared for and what they might like to eat. They compared this with how a human baby develops and is looked after. We are pleased to announce that there were three healthy arrivals and the children have learnt so much about understanding how penguin chicks develop and grow. THE NURSERY TEAM HEADLINES On Monday I had the privilege of introducing the children to our new Word of the Month. This month it is ‘Trust’, an important principle which guides our actions and thoughts. I know the children will benefit from seeing and hearing examples of trust both in School and at home. On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome prospective parents and children to our Open Morning. The School looked wonderful thanks to the beautiful classroom displays with Arctic and African themes. It is always gratifying to hear how impressed prospective parents are when they see the work of our children. Have a great weekend! Mr James Tilly, Head

HEADLINESOn Monday I had the privilege of introducing the children to our new Word of the Month.

A POLAR BEAR VISIT

“Our chairs have been pushed over!” , “Why are the toys all over the carpet?” , “Who is snoring?” Why indeed??!! Reception children discovered that a Polar Bear has taken residence in our classrooms!

The children made a comfortable den for the bears in their igloo and made “Keep quiet” signs for their nap time. Through non-fiction texts and class investigation, we discovered that Polar Bears have blue tongues! What an exciting week!“It might have eaten blueberries!” Charlie C. “Polar Bears hunt for seals and fish. They’re not used to being with people. Sadly, something bad can happen. Humans might hunt them and that’s really sad.” Oscar G.

THE RECEPTION TEAM

YEAR 1 INVESTIGATE ICY WORLDSThis week Year 1 have started a very exciting cross-curricular project; creating a non-fiction PowerPoint to showcase their learning throughout our Icy Worlds topic.

The children have researched a wide variety of subjects. This included investigating polar animal adaptations. They have also explored how the Inuit people live, to gather facts for their work.

Year 1 have also drawn on knowledge gained in Art and English, while creating and describing icy landscapes and the Northern Lights, to write and add detail to their presentations.

Now they are building their computing skills to put it all together and are particularly looking forward to publishing and sharing their projects at the end of the term.

MORE AFRICAN DELIGHTS

Well, what a busy week we have had in our penultimate Africa week! We have learnt so much and are all very keen to share what we know.

We have written amazing leaflets describing various features of Africa and compared this to life in England. There are lots of similarities and differences between the two.

Alexander T - ‘Did you know that tigers don’t actually live in Africa. You will however find leopards, cheetahs and African bees.’

Christopher - ‘I bet you didn’t know that Africa is the largest continent and it is very hot as it is close to the equator.’

We have been putting our knowledge of British coins to the test in preparation for our African shop opening in our Maths lessons. We have had a very creative week and have started work on our large 3D models, our fruit sculptures, our basket weaving and we have recreated our own pictures of Giraffes Can’t Dance using mixed media.

River - ‘We have been painting really big giraffes and zebras that can actually stand up on their own. It was very messy!’

Raffy - ‘We’ve been weaving African pots and I am really proud of mine.’ Such a busy and exciting week in Year 2!
