Newsletter FRIDAY 23 rd FEBRUARY, 2018 SHREWSBURY HOUSE PRE-PREP YEAR 1 MUSIC FESTIVAL On Tuesday, Year 1 took part in the Year 1 Music Festival, held at Shrewsbury House Prep School, with their friends from The Rowans and Long Ditton Infant and Nursery School. They performed Walking in the Air from the Snowman, following our Polar theme for the first half of term, and The Days of the Week in both English and French, in addition to two songs composed by Mr Peckham, Director of Music, at Shrewsbury House. The children’s presentation, concentration, and respect for their fellow performers were excellent throughout, they sang beautifully and confidently and they made fine ambassadors for our School and its music making. HEADLINES The second half of the Easter term started with the arrival of ten eggs! The children have gathered sensitively around the incubator and watched in great awe of nature as the chicks hatched from their eggs. I know that many adults have also enjoyed watching the live stream shared at the beginning of the week. More excitement on Tuesday for Year 2 as they arrived at School to find various burnt objects littering the path to their classrooms. The Great Fire of London was introduced to the children and they have been enthralled by tales of great bravery and adversity. Good luck if you are attending the Quiz Night this evening and have a lovely weekend! Mr James Tilly, Head

SHREWSBURY HOUSE PRE-PREP

The Nursery children have begun learning all about the Arctic and are discovering which animals live in such a cold climate.

They have wrapped up warm in their role-play igloo and listened to the story of Immi. Immi is an Inuit, linking nicely with our sound of the week. Her story has led us to explore friendship and fine motor skills have been developed as the children carefully craft their clay charms. At Forest School, the children made fishing rods from sticks and string, just as Immi did in the story. Mathematical work has been linked to sorting animals and objects which could be found ‘in the Arctic’ or ‘not in the Artic’.

The arrival of the chicks and eggs caused such excitement and the children were amazed to watch the little chicks hatching.

CASTLES IN RECEPTION

Knights, dragons, turrets and tiaras! What an exciting week it has been! Reception children have started to learn about castles and their purposes. Both classes have designed their own castles from junk modelling, focusing on collaboration and working together.

Here are some quotes from the children:Alex A. - “We need to work as a team!” Jack W. - “I have made a banner for the knights. They stand in front of everyone.” Charlie C. - “I am writing ‘welcome’ for the castle.” Reiss P. - “I found the dungeon! We also made red flags on the turrets.”

BEEBOTS IN YEAR 1

SHREWSBURY HOUSE PRE-PREP

The children have returned from their half term break refreshed and in great spirits. The week started with lots of excited discussion about the children’s half term activities. They went on to write some wonderful holiday news and the progress in all children’s independent writing abilities was clearly evident.

On Tuesday afternoon, we had lots of fun exploring the Beebots and creating videos using the iPad giving instructions for their use. The children worked in small groups to record turning the Beebots on and off, directing them in the shape of a square and even thought of troubleshooting advice for any errors in the Beebots movement.

FIRE! FIRE! IN YEAR 2

The Year 2 children have had a very exciting start back. They arrived in School to find mysterious items left on the stairs, such as burnt bread, old, singed maps of London and flour! On arrival to their classrooms, they were also surprised to discover two fires! The questions raised were excellent (as were the reactions!) and the children soon realised it was to do with their new Topic, ‘The Great Fire of London’. They enjoyed recording what they know and what they would like to find out about for the beginning of their new Topic, as they embark upon this next, rather fiery, learning journey.

THE YEAR 2 TEAM

Following on from our successful ‘Safer Internet Day’, the children continue to inspire us to consider being safe and considerate when online.

A big thank you to Elias C and Christopher C for the letters they have written, persuading parents to attend our eSafety training on the 8th March 2018. The letters can be seen on the following page.
